Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: How long do you give a book before deciding to put it on the #DNF pile? #BookTalk

JenFowler I try for a few weeks..I hate adding to that pile! 😫 20h
LibrarianRyan Depends. I like to say 100 pages, and I use to be very specific about it. Now, if I'm not feeling it, I'm not feeling it. Plus, I have a Maybe Later and a DNF. DNF if I just didn't like it, and ML if I liked it, but wasn't in to it at that moment. Books in my ML pile: Children of Blood and Bone, Three Dark Crowns, Creepers, etc. 20h
LittleBug I pretty much keep on trying🥴 I‘ll keep hoping it‘ll get better. I even keep them in my TBR stack, cause you know, maybe I just wasn‘t in the right mood🙈☺️ 20h
See All 15 Comments
TrishB Depending on size of book 50-100 pages. 20h
Reecaspieces Depends on how bad it is. 😂. It used to be 100 pages..I would have never read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo if I had not given it 100 pages. But the older I have gotten the shorter those pages have gotten. Now it‘s about 50 pages. (edited) 20h
ephemeralwaltz Depends. I measure it in time and not page count. I normally trust myself that even if I'm not enjoying it at the time and need to take a break, I'll pick it up again soon but if I don't in a few months I just accept the facts and move it to the DNF pile. 19h
xicanti Three chapters or fifty pages, barring extreme incompatibility. 19h
LA_Mead If I‘ve gotten about 50 or 60 pages in and am not feeling it I don‘t finish it... 19h
Lcsmcat Usually 100 pages, but an author I trust gets more, and egregiously bad writing gets fewer. 19h
Sjoanns I give it a solid 2-3 hours read time. And then I only put it down if it‘s absolutely horrendous. I just have an issue leaving a story untold, even if it‘s terrible. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 18h
Sace Sometimes it's immediate. I've DNFed some I was almost finished with. 18h
CogsOfEncouragement I finish books. I should probably make a few more exceptions to this. 17h
bookaholic1 At least 100 pgs 17h
rwmg It varies. Usually 50 to 100 pages but sometimes just 10 or 20 pages is enough. I once worked out that realistically I've only got time in this life for another 3000 or so books, so why keep struggling through something that feels like a chore? 16h

Things are still rock ‘n rollin‘ with the spooktacular #Scarathlon, led by two hosts with the mosts, @Clwojick and @TheReadingMermaid 😎👍🏻👍🏻! The gap‘s widened between #TeamSlaughter & #TeamStoker, but the word from the rockin‘ bird is there‘s still plenty of action.

Major shout-outs to the fanTAStic @LokiDokey @Lizpixie @FantasyChick @Jadams1776 @Chrys @CoffeeCatsBooks ! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Lizpixie Woohoo!! Looks like I got some more scarifying to do🎃👻😈 1d
Clwojick I cannot believe how close the score is between @LokiDokey & @Lizpixie, as well as with @Jadams1776 & @Chrys 😱 Both teams are working hard, and I'm proud that everyone's spreading the spooky Halloween cheer. 1d
TheReadingMermaid @Clwojick I just can't believe how fantastic both teams are! I mean people are really getting into the competition and I absolutely love that 🖤🎃🖤 1d
Clwojick And once again, thanks to @MrBook for agreeing to be our event judge, and for getting into the Halloween groove along with us 😊🎃🖤 (edited) 1d

From the superb @Gina :

Here is a link to for a petiton that is against the Macmillan ebook embargo on public #libraries :

Acrl.ala.org/acrlinsider/archives/18254

PatriciaU For you e-readers/listeners out there who love Libby - seriously, sign this petition. If Macmillan is successful in curtailing access to new releases for libraries, other publishers will follow suit. Libraries already pay 25% more for e-content; limiting when and how many copies libraries can buy directly affects YOU because it will mean even longer wait times for popular titles or no access at all if your library refuses to buy Macmillan titles. 1d

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: I‘m making the long drive out to western PA today. Of course I have an audio book and podcasts to keep me company 😊🤓. Do you keep the same company when you go on a long drive? Any kinds of books and podcasts in particular? #BookTalk

BibliophileLibrarian Absolutely! I drive from Elizabeth to Pittsburgh every day, about 45-60 minute drive. Some podcasts I listen to are: What Should I Read Next?; Book Riot; Simple Show; Vibrant Happy Women; Mining Poldark; The Productive Woman; and One Great Book. And then I listen to my audiobooks as well! 2d

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: What do you do when someone gifts you a book that you really don‘t want to read? #BookTalk

GrilledCheeseSamurai Reeeeeeeeeeegift! 👀🤷🏼‍♂️😜 3d
Carolyn11215 I give it to our library to sell in their shop, which supports library. :) 3d
See All 19 Comments
JacqMac Little free library. 3d
LibrarianRyan Regift it. 3d
BillBlume One birthday, my overly conservative parents got me an awful book called Agents of Babylon. The writing in the book was beyond pathetic. I took it to Barnes & Noble and traded it in for another book (they‘ll give you store credit if you don‘t have a receipt. The gamble is that it will be for whatever the lowest price it‘s been sold at their store). I used the refund towards buying The Hate U Give in hardback. 3d
BethM Regift 3d
twohectobooks I‘m gifted actual books so rarely that I usually do read them. Haven‘t had to re-examine this policy yet haha 3d
Emilymdxn If I‘m given a book in good faith by a person I like and I know they wanted me to like it I do read and keep them, I try to enjoy them for what they tell me about the person who gifted them to me even if I don‘t love the book. If someone gifts me a book I already read and didn‘t like I would keep it on my shelves but not feel I had to read it a second time 3d
sharread I buy myself books I don't want to read because of the awesome cover. 🤣🎃👻 3d
JulietBooks I try to stay open minded. 3d
Crazeedi I check to see if my daughter is interested as we have different tastes, if not I'll regift or donate to library 3d
Billypar Luckily this only happened once when my dad gifted me The Millionaire Next Door when I was in high school. It was never mentioned again, and if I give books to others, I make a point of never asking them about it later ☺ 3d
ravenlee I give them a fair try (at some point) and then they usually go to the used book store. I kept one from my MIL for YEARS after reading it and hating it, then I figured if she was grading me I‘d already passed and sold it. 3d
xicanti Since I became an adult I‘ve always at least tried to read gifts, even if I‘m not super drawn to the title at first glance. When I was a teenager, though, things were different. Everyone knew I loved to read, and none of them really understood or accepted that I quit reading kids‘ books when I was twelve. (YA wasn‘t much of a thing back then.) I basically sulked whenever yet another well-meaning person gave a book that was way too young for me. 3d
TheHeartlandBookFairy Usually it lands on my epic TBR stack for a while (unless it was already on my wish list). eventually I'll get to it and if I'm not riveted by the book, I'll at least try to give it 10 or 15 minutes a night before settling in with the book I really want to read lol 😂 it takes longer to get through a book this way but, sometimes it ends up being a book that I really enjoy and it was worth the effort. Sometimes not. 🤷 3d
rwmg If somebody insists on my taking a book I don't really want, I put it on the TBR shelf and then eventually find myself in the mood to at least try. I've often been pleasantly surprised. I've only ever decided I am never going to read something and passed it on. As the donor had left the country I felt safe enough. 3d
Kimberlone I will just add it to my shelf. Sometimes I will end up reading it later. If I don‘t, then eventually it goes to be traded in at the used book store. Honestly I don‘t get gifted books that often though so I can‘t say it‘s been a big problem 3d
Gissy I will try it. 1d

Hey Litsy! Our wonderful and resourceful @Andrew65 has come up with a fabulous idea for #24B4Monday this month. For those of you who are not taking part in the #Scarathlon, you can sponsor a team! TheReadingMermaid @sharread so what will happen is the read-a-thon starts on Thursday night at midnight and runs until Sunday night at midnight. You will keep track of the hours that you read and gained five points per hour to the team that you are sponsoring. We encourage people to post updates of their reading progress and times throughout the read-a-thon. A stopwatch function on your phone is very handy for this. 2d

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: How does a book‘s popularity influence your decision about reading it? #BookTalk

Bookwormjillk I sometimes put off reading them because I‘m afraid they won‘t live up to the hype 5d
Chrissyreadit It does not, necessarily influence- unless people with similar taste to mine are raving about it. Then I want it. 5d
Sace I have similar thoughts to @Bookwormjillk I'm also a curmudgeon and tend to avoid things that everyone is raving about. 5d
See All 16 Comments
LauraJ It depends on who is hot for the book. I generally trust my favorite Littens. (edited) 5d
OrangeMooseReads It might get the book on my list if it seems interesting but it doesn‘t make me read it any sooner. 5d
Amiable Not at all. I read what I want, not what others like. 5d
DGRachel Like @OrangeMooseReads hype might put a book on my TBR list, but it‘s not going to get me to read it any faster. I‘m too much of a mood reader for that. 5d
BethM It probably makes me less inclined to read it 😂 5d
Caffeinated_Reader Not usually. I try not to read reviews or any type of book info because I like to go in not knowing much and not knowing what to expect. 5d
IamIamIam I don't trust popular opinion too much and I'm almost always disappointed by the hyped up books. I'll stick to my weird eclectic tastes!!! 5d
sharread None, I prefer inde authors. 👍 5d
Reecaspieces Not usually 5d
bookaholic1 I read the back of the book and judge it myself, not from anyone's opinion 5d
Peddler410 Unless the book is one I am anticipating, I let popular books wait. If it‘s an author I love, I will track down a copy ASAP. If it‘s not on my radar, I let the buzz die down — otherwise, I am usually disappointed. 5d
rwmg Only if it sounds like the sort of thing I might like anyway and is popular amongst people whose taste I trust. I've got too many series and genres to catch up with as it is. I've re-read too many hyped books after the hype has died down and wondered why they caught so much attention. 5d
Reviewsbylola I am much more apt to read a book that I‘ve seen around a lot, but only if it‘s a book I think I‘d like or by an author I know. 5d

From the incredible @Tove_Reads 😁:

Littens! 2020 will be #YearOfNordicNoir! @EadieB and @Andrew65 and myself will read several Nordic crime fiction series (probably will not finish all of them in 2020) next year. ☝🏾Some examples of what we‘ve been talking about. Would anyone else be interested in joining us?

Christinak Ooooh! How exciting! 6d
EadieB @Christinak Make plans to join us! Check your library for some Nordic books. 6d

😳🙈😆👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 #LitsyHumor

marleed That‘s hilarious! ...When I grew up this warning came with words rather than image. I spent countless Montana road trips looking for the little Indian boy - watch for Fallen Rock - lost in the mountains as told so cautiously by my ever livin‘ lovin‘ father. When I was 19 and driving alone down Harding Way I realized, wait a minute, that‘s an actual caution sign! Dads!! 7d
Laura317 My dad told the same tale to me in Tennessee! How fun! 6d
marleed @Laura317 That is so funny. I wonder if it was an urban (‘er mountain) legend before such a moniker existed. Do you recall when you realized little Fallen Rock was a real as Santa!? 6d

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: You are placed in charge of a book club, and you can only pick books one of two ways: do you pick books you‘ve already read, or do you pick books you haven‘t read? #BookTalk

CrowCAH Books I‘ve read, so I can be knowledgeable about the content. Would put less stress on me not to have to quickly read and finish the book before the group discussion. 7d
TheSpineView Books I have not read. 7d
Sarahreadstoomuch I run a book club at my library and I ask members to vote for our books for the year. However, I do make the list they vote from, and while it‘s probably 80% books I haven‘t read, I‘ll stick in a few that I have so that I can catch a break sometimes. Still need to skim it again though - discussions can get pretty in depth! 7d

bookaholic1 Books I haven't read, but if someone suggests that they wanted to read one I have already read, I wouldn't stop that from happening 7d
Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve been in my book club for many years and we always choose our books for the year in September. Everyone brings their suggestions that they preferably haven‘t read, we make a master list and pick from there. We ask that people suggest books they haven‘t read so that people aren‘t hurt by someone who hates a book they love. If we all start off with curiosity then hopefully no one gets upset. 7d
DGRachel If those are my only two choices, then books I haven‘t read because while I know that no book works for all people, it sucks if the entire group hates a book you love. 7d
Samplergal Books I‘ve read and know can be a great discussion book. Some books that are great, may not have a lot to offer a book discussion. It‘s how I run mine and have been successful. Even when the participants don‘t like the book, a lively discussion is had! 7d
rwmg When my book club started the rule was books nobody had read, but as the number of members increased that proved impractical. We take it in turns to choose a book. Each of the original members still holds to the rule of a book he/she hasn't read before but the newer members tend to choose a favourite for their first book till they get the idea. 7d
