Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: If you could change the title of a couple books, which book titles would you change and to what? #BookTalk

Leniverse I would change every title that has the format “The so-and-so‘s Wife/Daughter” to anything else. 11h
readingjedi I would make the American version of Northern Lights be called that and not The Golden Compass. This has always bugged me - it's not a compass, it's an alethiometer! 11h
tournevis @Leniverse Those drive me NUTS! 10h
See All 12 Comments
BookwormAHN I would change Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone back to it's original title Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I don't why they changed it for U. S. 10h
LibrarianRyan @BookwormAHN Because in the US schools don't start talking about Philosophers until Highschool if even then. They were worried american kids wouldn't understand. Plus, its a wizards stone, not a sorcerers stone. 10h
Leniverse @readingjedi It looks like a compass though! And the other books are named for the special item featured, so Northern Lights always struck me as the odd one out. The Golden Alethiometer is a bit cumbersome as titles go. 😂 10h
Leniverse @BookwormAHN @LibrarianRyan Yes, why sorcerer of all things! The wizard‘s stone. The alchemist‘s stone. The magical stone! Sorcerer makes no sense whatsoever. 10h
Kappadeemom I would take away “Girl” from every book title published lately and change it to something else (I don‘t have a problem with the word, just the overuse). Now it‘s the covers with the female silhouette that‘s all the rage🤷‍♀️ 10h
Itchyfeetreader @Leniverse oh yes! Absolutely. This really annoys me 9h
CareBear @Kappadeemom this a million times 8h
LibrarianRyan @Leniverse plus an alethiometer is not a known object for most the kids this book was aimed out. 4h

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Sorry for the late asking 🙈. Here it is: Do you read with your finger (or a pencil) or do you just eyeball? I gotta day, sometimes I miss a line and have to find my place when I eyeball 😂, but I do just eyeball. #BookTalk

emilyhaldi I use my bookmark sometimes 🤓 1d
Dolly Reading an ebook will prevent you from using a digit. ☺️I eyeball it. 1d
jen_the_scribe I just eyeball mostly. If I'm annotating then I'll follow specific lines with a pencil or my highlighter. 1d

dragondrool Eyeball all the way.
1d
BooknerdsLife Mostly just eyeballs too 👁 1d
Kaylamburson Hahaha my boyfriend was literally just making fun of me for this! I usually just use my eyes, but if I'm studying or reading with a pen or pencil in my hand, I often follow along with it. I didn't even notice it lol. 1d
Crazeedi Eyeball (so far!) 1d
BarbaraTheBibliophage 👁 👁 👀 👀 1d
SaturnDoo I eyeball but use a technique called "The hand" that helps increase your reading speed..been doing this for a long time and it works ? 1d
RainyDayReading I eyeball. But if I‘m having a really hard time getting through the book I‘ll slide my bookmark along a line at a time. It forces me to focus and I feel like I get done faster haha. But I prefer just doing the eyeball method. 1d
Slajaunie Just eyeball. 1d
audraelizabeth I eyeball but when i was studying used my whichever writing utensil was in my hand. 1d
LauraJ Exactly what @RainyDayReading said. 1d
Peddler410 Depends on the situation. If it‘s fun reading and no distractions I eyeball. Professional reading, usually a pen. Fun reading with distractions, finger or bookmark. Sometimes the distraction is too much and I will read a line or two quietly Outloud 1d
TheSpineView Just eyeball it! 20h
tournevis When copying a quote, I do use my fingers, or I read it out loud. Otherwise, eyes only. 20h
AmyRebecca Usually just eyes but I find if it is an especially meaningful section or I need to focus I'll use my finger 14h

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: How do you arrange the books on your shelves? #BookTalk

mdm139 Genre 4d
wanderinglynn Mainly genre. 4d
tournevis Currently, size. I prefer alphabetical, but it's not possible at the moment 4d
See All 21 Comments
Crazeedi They're just on there...😉 4d
Peddler410 Wherever they fit. I tried genre, reading level, author within one of those....my cubbies couldn‘t handle it 😊 4d
BilboBookends Where they fits, they sits 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4d
vivastory It's random. I need to organize them. 4d
Kaila-ann Right now they go where they fit, I need to organize 🤷🏻‍♀️. 4d
Jennifer3 Wherever there is space. I need more shelves!!! 4d
Geeklet Once upon a time, it was in height order. Now I‘m just jamming them in there and praying I have enough room to last until I get a new bookshelf. 4d
Mynameisacolour By Author 4d
Amiable By genre. Two bookcases hold fiction, another two have nonfiction. Fiction is organized by favorite authors, signed copies, recommended by others, etc. The nonfiction are sub-categorized by topic: one shelf is presidential bios, another is medical/science, a third is history, etc. It makes sense to nobody in my house except me — but I can find anything upon request within seconds. 😀 4d
TheHeartlandBookFairy By author for those who I collect their books. By subject or genre for the rest. I have a section for signed books, one for local authors, a space for launch team books, classics, etc. My OCD kicked in and I have all of the shelves labeled with library shelf tags now lol Within each section it tends to be by height unless the books are stacked horizontally with the larger books at the bottom and smallest on the top. 4d
Dragonfairykats My Kindle books are collected in broad genre categories. My Nook books are by series or genre 4d
Lizpixie My “Read” books are organised alphabetically by author, then chronologically. My TBR is just shoved wherever there‘s room! 4d
LibrarianRyan Does Mess count? I try by genre but then things pile up, I run out of shelf space, and everything collapses. 4d
madamereadsalot1 Usually by author, but also by genre or type. Like books with pictures on a shelf, regardless of author or type book(comic series, graphic novels, kids picture books, art books, etc). YA all together, even if I have adult books by the same author. And so on. 4d
Aims42 By genre first and then from there I mix up the spines because I don‘t like them going from tallest to shortest 😂 4d
rwmg Fiction by author's last name, non-fiction originally by subject matter, now wherever I can fit them in. 4d
Gissy By genre and authors 3d
AmyRebecca Subject determines what bookcase. Topic or author determines what shelf. Spine color determines position on the shelf. Had to redo my system after moving /giving a large majority of books away in Flint, Michigan. However, after giving up about 70% of my books there are enough left to have quite a collection that I'm pretty particular about organizing. A place for everything, and everything in place! Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: When you come across unfamiliar words or phrases while reading a novel, do you stop and look them up or do you just keep going and perhaps get back to them later? #BookTalk

ephemeralwaltz I've been forcing myself to always look them up for a couple of years now. I take reading as an opportunity to learn on any level. 5d
tournevis It happens occasionally, mostly older, defunct words, usually. Or German. 5d
ju.ca.no Depends on the book - as english is my second language there are some books with plenty of unknown words, in this case I only look up the ones that appear more often. If it is an easier read with only few unknown words I try to look them up if it is possible. In German, my native language,i also try to look up unknown words. Just sometimes I am too lazy😅 (edited) 5d
See All 25 Comments
BookishJess I mostly read e-books so looking up a word just takes a finger tap 😁 5d
LibrarianRyan With the advent of smart phones it‘s too easy not to look them up so I do. 5d
Soubhiville I love when this happens! I usually look them up, if I‘m not on my kindle. 5d
JSW Mostly I just keep going and understand in context. But sometimes it‘s an unusual enough word that I stop everything. (I miss print dictionaries, I may need one.) 5d
Lucy_Anywhere Normally I rely on context. The great thing about kindles is that you can tap on a word to bring up the definition 5d
Leftcoastzen I look them up! 5d
ladym30 I stop and look them up. 5d
Cheshirecat913 Both. If I can and I have my phone right by me I look them up. I won't stop reading and get up and go find my phone or computer though. 5d
CrowCAH Usually I keep going, unless context clues don‘t give me a good enough explanation. 5d
parasolofdoom I tap to look up on kindle, I don't stop to check with a physical book unless I really don't understand from context clues. 5d
Gissy I need to look up for the meaning immediately. 5d
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I look them up right away. The only time I wish I had an ebook, is when I don't know a word. 5d
MicrobeMom Look them up! 5d
Karkar Get back to them later. 5d
BookPixie I usually look them up regardless of the book format, but I‘m more likely to do so on the kindle than with a physical book. It‘s one of my favorite kindle features. 5d
webhau1 I am more likely to look them up if I am reading on a Kindle as has been said above as that is such a nice feature. 5d
DGRachel It depends. I try to figure it out from context clues or, if I have my Kindle, I click on the word. If I‘m reading a print book, I‘m less likely to look up unfamiliar words unless not knowing really impacts my ability to understand the rest of the text. 5d
MyNamesParadise It depends on my mood, I‘ll do both. 5d
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I usually look it up unless I can infer the meaning from context. I'll also look up things mentioned when reading historical novels & clothing of the time as well as places I'm unfamiliar with. And I think I've just realized why I only read one book every 1-2 weeks. 5d
Sharpeipup Look them up usually. 5d
kspenmoll If I cannot figure out via context I look them up. If its science, I always look terms up!!‘ 4d
JanuarieTimewalker13 I try to make a mental note (or tag the page) and look it up later. Unless my phone is next to me, then I can do it right away. 3d

Slajaunie No. What is that? 6d
Texreader Not sure what that means. 6d
vivastory Nope 6d
See All 24 Comments
LibrarianRyan Yes. I loved them, and I loved them for the library. They have kind of fallen off the map now that so much is downloadable, but before everyone had smart phones and tablets to download things to, they were awesome. @Slajaunie they are a compact listening device for audiobooks. They were really popular for about 5 years while music was digital but audio books still on CD. They have been fading away as downloadable audiobooks have become common 6d
tournevis Nope! 6d
Crazeedi No I've never really heard of them! 6d
Shvonne I didn‘t know that was a thing 6d
Dolly Yes, I agree with @LibrarianRyan. Playaway (Recorded Book) is a little battery powered credit card sized case, about 1/2” thick that came with a long lanyard so you could wear it around your neck and a port for earphones. I don‘t think they have speakers. The buttons for fast forward and rewind sometimes worked, sometimes didn‘t. Most libraries didn‘t have them. 6d
Susanita I tried once, and the thing just didn‘t work at all, so I wasn‘t inclined to try again. 6d
Penny_LiteraryHoarders I just think this is such old technology?? Our library is bringing these in more and more. You can't hook up to your car to play, must have your own battery and earphones. Seems like Walkman technology. ☺️ 6d
DGRachel I‘ve never heard of them! 6d
JanuarieTimewalker13 No, I sincerely have no idea what it is. 6d
TheSpineView Never used one. 6d
Cailey_Mac Hmmm never heard of it! Is it like hearing a theatrical play of the book? 6d
megnews I haven‘t. But I have a friend whose library carried them and she listened to them a lot while walking. I think she still does. 6d
MrBook @Slajaunie @Texreader @Crazeedi @Shvonne @DGRachel @JanuarieTimewalker13 @Cailey_Mac , I think @LibrarianRyan and @Dolly have done a good job at explaining what they are. I‘ll take pictures of them and share those pics here. Think of an iPod nano that looks like a tiny boom box. It‘s got forward, backward, pause, & play buttons. A little screen showing progress. You can only listen with headphones. 1 AA battery. 👇🏻 6d
MrBook The ones at my library don‘t have a lanyard. They are extremely popular at my library. Our director never knew what they were before taking over at our library, and she had me take a look to see the circulation numbers. Most get checked out regularly quite often, so the powers-that-be decided enthusiastically to keep them. Many of our patrons have 1+-hour commutes, ride buses and subways, and find them perfect for such things. 🤷🏼‍♂️ (edited) 6d
LibrarianRyan @MrBook they made some for viewing with shows and movies n them. We bought some of the kids ones. And the patrons loved them but they broke too easy. 6d
Texreader @Cailey_Mac That was what I was thinking until I read the explanation 6d
JanuarieTimewalker13 Sounds like a cool device. Allows you to put IPhone away- always a good thing! 6d
JanuarieTimewalker13 I have a good question of the day for you....how many of you have downloaded a song bc it was mentioned in a book? I have done this numerous times!! 6d
Cailey_Mac @MrBook what! See that sounds cool, anything to help save my horrible phone battery😅 @Texreader hey we were far off but a guess is a guess! 6d
kspenmoll What is that???!! 4d

I‘ve been so busy today with work at the prison and a book club meeting and such 😱🙈. Here‘s today‘s tardy bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻: What‘s a good time-length for a book club meeting, in your opinion? I make mine 2 hours. #BookTalk

Lcsmcat Ours are about 2 hours, which seems to work well. 1w
chaoticgoodhufflepuff Both of the groups I go to average about an hour and a half. Except there was one book we spent 4 hours yelling about and laughing at. 😂 1w
8little_paws Mine goes 1-1.5 hours. 2 hours is too long for me. 1w
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraTheBibliophage I vote for 90 minutes, unless the chairs are really comfortable and the people are really interesting. 1w
BethM What are you doing at a prison? 1w
JackOBotts My group is usually 2-2.5 hrs, but we spend a good 45 mins catching up. 1w
Pogue Ours is scheduled for an hour, but it is more like 2-3. 1w
CarolynM My group doesn't have a scheduled time, but it is rare for us to be finished in under 2 hours. 1w
rwmg My book club meetings usually last from 1 1/2 to 2 hours for the actual meeting. There's usually anything up to 1/2 hour beforehand for people to arrive and chat. Some of our members Skype in and are in different time zones so it takes a while to get everybody ready. 1w
tournevis The only books clubs I have experience with were either virtual (no schedule), at school (fixed periods) or my mom's, which was mostly a pretext for bourgeois and French expat women to eat finger food, drink tea, and feel good about being superior. 7d

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: In what percentage proportion do you read the following formats: hardcover, softcover, paperback, digital, audio? #BookTalk

For me, it might be something similar to:

Hardcover: 20%
Softcover: 30%
Paperback: 30%
Audio: 20%
Digital: 0%

Geeklet Gosh. It‘s probably like 50% digital because I buy more books on sale than I realize. Then it‘s like 30% paperback, 15% hardback, and 5% audiobook. Something like that. I prefer trade paperback but I get hardbacks through book of the month. I only have maybe five mass market paperbacks and I‘m looking to replace them all with trades. MMPB smell weird to me. I don‘t like them at all. (edited) 1w
rwmg About 60% digital, 35% paperback, and 5% hardback 1w
Jess861 Hardcover: 10%
Softcover: 60%
Paperback: 30%
Audio: 0%
Digital: 0%
1w

ljuliel 75 % audio, 25% digital. I‘ve gotten spoiled by allowing others to read to me. Old eyeballs make that a better pick and Kindle so I can crank up the print size . 1w
8little_paws Is paperback mass market and softcover the paper cover non mass market? 1w
readingjedi I went 100% digital when my daughter was born for convenience reasons. She's now 5 & I haven't reverted. My house is small - any room left is for my daughter's books. 1w
CouronneDhiver Hardcover 55% Audio 30% Digital 10% Paperback 5% 1w
Sresendez12 Hardcover: 45% Paperback: 40% Audio: 10% Digital: 5% (edited) 1w
Dragonfairykats Digital: 80% Paperback: 15% Hardcover: 5% I went digital when I moved out of my parents house after college and had to move 900 books.... 1w
TheSpineView Just a guess but 30/30/30/10 between ebooks, audiobooks and softcover. With the 10% being hardcover. 1w
MrBook @8little_paws Good question. Yep! 😊 1w
Soubhiville Hardcover- 25%, Paperback- 30%, Audio- 40%, Digital- 5%. (edited) 1w
LeahBergen Hardcover: 70%. Softcover: 30%. And that‘s IT. 😆 1w
Lucy_Anywhere Hardback: 5%. Paperback: 5%. Digital: 90%. I live abroad so it's cheaper to buy ebooks 1w
ReadingRover I rarely read HC 0-5%. For the sake of easy math let‘s say 0. SC/PB:10% Digital: 10% Audio: 80% 1w
eraderneely H: 10%, S: 35%, A: 50%, D: 5% 1w
Bookboss Hardcover 20%, Softcover 18%, Paperback 2%, Digital 40%, Audio 10%. I haven‘t kept track of the exact numbers, but this is what I would estimate. 1w
Deifio Hardcover: 1%, Softcover: 0%, Paperback: 4%, Digital: 90%, Audio: 5% I used to live quite far away deom my mum, but we always read the same books. So it became convenient to share a kindle library. I live next door to her now, but I haven't reverted. I don't have enough shelf space anymore 1w
