Forced myself to get out of the house today.

Returning to Philip K. Dick. I'm really enjoying reading about this period of his life from his perspective. Such an odd experience he had. I'm glad he was able to eventually recover from it.

I like how he created himself and his personia both in the book. Reminds me of Vonnegut and Trout.

Bklover This just made my mouth water! 3mo
Patchshank It was really good. Ate way too much though. Im still full. It was a taco, a sope, and a enchilada with beans and rice. 2mo

It was ok. It was funny at some parts. It's rather dated. I found the way women were spoken of to be a bit derogatory. Even for the 70's. Probably quite edgy for the time.
It was interesting to see that employees are still treated just as poorly now as they were 50+ years ago.
Some things never change 😮‍💨
I'm probably not going to read any other novels written by Bukowski. This one just didn't interest me enough

Finally caught up on my #LitsyLove and other mail and cards I need to send out.

I've kind of fallen off litsy. I went through bit of a rough patch. I got out of an incredibly toxic relationship. I fell into a depression and started drinking more than I probably should. That kept me busy. Kinda.

I'm doing much better now though. I'm slowly pulling myself back up with the help of my friends. I'm slowly playing catch up with the world.

Patchshank For about a month or so the post office wasnt forwarding my mail and my ex wasn't giving it to me. He finally gave me my mail, but i have no way of knowing if that was all of it. If you don't receive something from me by the end of December feel free to reach out. I would like to get back in touch with everyone.♥️ 6mo

Had to finish this one so I can return it to the library tomorrow. I really enjoyed it. I can really relate to murderbot. I also want to be left alone to enjoy myself, but humans keeps wanting to talk to me or make me go to work.

Does anyone know if this series has to be read in order? I can get 5 and 6 on libby without a wait, but all the others have a wait list.

xicanti There‘s a definite progression to them, so I‘d wait and go in order instead of jumping ahead. 13mo
Patchshank @xicanti Alrighty. Thank you. I just wasn't sure if they could be read as stand alone novels or not. The ending of this made it seem like it could go either way. 13mo
julesG Yepp, better do them in order. Also, 6 (Fugitive Telemetry) should be read before 5 (Network Effect) - don't know why they were published in this order - Murderbot gets accessories in 6 that it already used in 5 🙄🙄🙄 13mo

I just finished my #LMPBC. I didn't really get from it what I wanted I guess. I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil it for the rest of the group.
It is still an interesting book though. Reading what serial killers has to say about their crimes, themselves, and whatever else. It did get extremely hard to read at times. It would get extremely graphic. But it was interesting glimpsing into their minds at times.

I finally got around to reading these. I've had them awhile, but haven't made the time to read them. I'm glad I finally did. The people wanting to ban this book clearly haven't read it. Typical 😓 I think it's completely fine for 8th grade. What do they think is going to happen if kids read it? Are they going to sprout tails and start listening to the rock n roll music? I mean come on...
It's important kids learn about the Holocaust.

Patchshank There is no way to sugar coat this period in history. Parents are going to do much more harm by trying to. 1y
KathyWheeler I never know if I‘m a good judge of what most people think is fine for 8th graders or not because my mom didn‘t restrict my reading. I read some pretty graphic books on the Holocaust with pictures of actual people when I was much younger than 8th grade. I‘m convinced most 8th graders can handle it, and that we‘ve gotten into a ridiculous habit of always underestimating our kids in the US. This desire to “protect” them does them no favors. 1y
Cortg I read this article today. The author/journalist reviewed the school board minutes that took place over pulling Maus from the curriculum. It's an entertaining yet also frusterating article. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2022/02/the-inside-story-of-the-banning-of-... 1y
See All 15 Comments
Patchshank @KathyWheeler I'm not sure I'm a good judge either. I had everything restricted as a kid, but my mom didn't pay close attention so I was still able to sneak stuff easily. But we read Night in 7th grade as part of class. We read some of Diary of a Young girl, but most of the focus was on Night. That was fine. Between this and the whole "teachers need to be unbiased on Nazis" thing, it's super concerning. 1y
KathyWheeler @Patchshank I can‘t understand where this “teachers and libraries need to be unbiased about Nazis” thing even came from! Why? At one point, bias against Nazis was one thing pretty much everyone agreed on. 1y
vivastory I was in the 9th grade when Schindler's List was released on VHS & it was shown several times in my school. This was a little overshadowed by what happened w/ Maus but just a couple of days before it was banned, a school board in MO banned FOUR books in a high school, including Toni Morrison & Alison Bechdel:
https://www.kirkusreviews.com/news-and-features/articles/missouri-school-distric...
(edited) 1y
TheKidUpstairs I read an article from someone who was in the meeting where they made the decision on Maus. They freely admitted not having read it, not having even seen it. So frustrating 1y
Patchshank @vivastory The amount of pettiness in that article is astounding. "My kids aren't allowed to say bitch at school, so they shouldn't be allowed to read the word either." Soooooo petty. People should have to read the book before they agree to ban it. Can't ban it until they read it and are able to provide proof they read and understood it. 1y
Patchshank @Cortg sorry tagged the wrong person. I'll read the article you posted @vivastory 1y
Patchshank @vivastory I haven't read any of those books, so I don't feel like I can comment on them. But I think my previous comments probably still apply. You can't sugar coat the bad things in the world or just ban your kids from learning about it. That does way more damage. People should still be required to read the books they want to ban. Most books probably wouldn't get banned. 1y
KathyWheeler @vivastory I‘ve read both The Bluest Eye and Fun Home and loved both. I haven‘t read the others that were mentioned. 1y
KathyWheeler @Cortg The stupidity on display in that article was so frustrating! 1y
RebL This is a book I've been meaning to read, but other priorities prevented me from doing so. YKWIM? Now it's skipped right to the top. That's the way with challenged & banned books. It'll probably get a boost again in Sept with Banned Books Week.
~
Thanks for posting that article @cortg. Wow.
1y
allureofbeauty They‘re amazing. 1y
Patchshank @KathyWheeler I agree! How has that became a dividing issue? That was the one thing everyone had in common. The guy who disagreed? No one spoke to that guy. 1y
