Utopia Avenue | David Mitchell
100 posts | 49 read | 1 reading | 58 to read
The spectacular new novel from the bestselling author of CLOUD ATLAS and THE BONE CLOCKS, 'one of the most brilliantly inventive writers of this, or any country' (Independent). Utopia Avenue are the strangest British band you've never heard of. Emerging from London's psychedelic scene in 1967 and fronted by folksinger Elf Holloway, guitar demigod Jasper de Zoet and blues bassist Dean Moss, Utopia Avenue released only two LPs during its brief and blazing journey from the clubs of Soho and draughty ballrooms to Top of the Pops and the cusp of chart success, to glory in Amsterdam, prison in Rome and a fateful American fortnight in the autumn of 1968. David Mitchell's new novel tells the unexpurgated story of Utopia Avenue; of riots in the streets and revolutions in the head; of drugs, thugs, madness, love, sex, death, art; of the families we choose and the ones we don't; of fame's Faustian pact and stardom's wobbly ladder. Can we change the world in turbulent times, or does the world change us? Utopia means 'nowhere' but could a shinier world be within grasp, if only we had a map?

I enjoyed it, but it won't henceforth be known as my favourite David Mitchell. I think his skill in executing this book about music, writing lyrics, and describing songs is absolutely superb. Maybe I would have simply preferred spending more time with Elf or Jasper and not ending with Dean - although I did like him better by the end. Whatever I think about it, it's still recommended reading for any die-hard David Mitchell reader. ⭐⭐⭐ and a half

Elf,Dean,Griff, and jasper make an unlikely band in the heady days of 1967/68 i imagined a pink Floyd/ Fleetwood mac/fairport convention combo. Told with the author's wonderful imagination+ with nods to previous bks (Dr marinus appearing at a crucial part) this is a great evocation of the 1960's it's music and history. Great characters, remarkable cameos great storytelling. A perfect gift from last years father's day.

Utopia Avenue is the name of Mitchell's fictitious rock band - a sort of Floyd/Cream/Traffic amalgam fronted by a Sandy Dennyish girl singer whose struggles in the cutthroat world of sixties London are recounted with loving attention to detail and a wealth of celebrity cameos. Clunky in parts but very readable.

From D Mitchell‘s article in the Cork Examiner..

I saw Steven Spielberg‘s ET in Malvern Winters Garden cinema in Worcestershire , the month it came out. The bit when you think the big eyed spindly fingered fellers dead sure enough .. but then the flower comes back to life, the protagonist Elliot , you and all the other surreptitious weepers in the cinema realise all is not lost
I remember thinking but it‘s only a story ! It isn‘t real
Then 👇🏻

Cathythoughts 👆🏻… But these emotions are real .. that means something.. What ? I‘m still working on the answer but it‘s something to do with Neil Gaiman‘s maxim : … ‘ fiction is the lie that tells the truth ‘ 3y

Update on Utopia Avenue .. just had lunch out ( Bank holiday here ) and talked about Dean Moss , the guitarist in the band & how he is seeing a girl .. but maybe he should treat her like a real girl … anyway , no spoilers ! But it was so fun because I know the characters now ( via husband ) .. and I‘d say neighbouring tables were listening like we were gossiping ( I‘m not a gossip ) about real people, so invested in conversation were we 👇🏻

5 ⭐️

First…
One of these years, I‘m going to read all of Mitchell‘s work from first to latest, to fully immerse myself in the world he builds, and catch ALL the overlaps…
Second…
I am a sucker for fake rock band bios, and this is one of the best I‘ve ever read. The characters come completely alive. And Mitchell‘s skill at constructing a story is at its peak.
I savored reading this. I only sped up toward the end, to see if I guessed Dean‘s fate.

BookwormM I am on the same mission 👍 3y

🎧 none of my library holds are moving 😖 so I listened to this. Like Cloud Atlas it had me reading nearly strait through. The narrator was good. It‘s a story of a fictional British 60‘s rock band. The 4 bandmates each have a story. In a small way it reminded me of Daisy Jones. The “knock knock” storyline was a bit odd. I really enjoyed the writing & slice of life this book portrayed. There were plenty of pop references & name drops. Fun. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

David Mitchell might be my favorite living author and while I like some of his other novels better, I really enjoyed Utopia Avenue. Mitchell's novels form a meta-novel and Utopia Avenue brings in characters from his other books. At its heart, though, Utopia Avenue is about rock music and coming of age.

Vansa Loved this book. I couldn't help feeling that he wanted to give Syd Barrett and Sandy Denny a happy ending in fiction, that they couldn't get in real life. 3y

I really enjoyed this story of a British band, from its conception to its demise in the late 60‘s. Loved the time period and all the relevant references. It‘s been a few years since I‘ve read a David Mitchell novel. Some of his books are kind of “out there” & leave me scratching my head a bit. But this one had only a mild element of oddness, with some ties to previous books. I was sad to see this one end.

I loved this book, the story of four musicians brought together to form a genre-bending band in the late 1960s. It's a deeply human, beautifully written exploration of art, music, creativity and connection. I do wonder what readers unfamiliar with Mitchell's other work will make of Jasper's struggles, but if you've read The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and The Bone Clocks, it's a fascinating continuation. Loved the characters, loved the book!

Verity @SamAnne that is a lot of pages! 😱 4y
SamAnne @Verity I don‘t mind chunksters but there is little character development until the last 100 pages. But Mitchell does set the reader right into the mid-late 60s with all the details... 4y

Verity @SamAnne have you read Daisy Jones? If so how do they compare? 4y
SamAnne @verity very different. As you know Daisy is very plot driven and moves along quickly. Utopia is very scene driven. Mitchell focuses on capturing the scene and time down to every minute detail. I‘m a Mitchell fan, but a wanted more in the character arcs and more unexpected. He‘s clearly an obsessive fan of that music era. 4y

I've listened to much longer audios than this one, but this one took me longer to finish than any of the others. There are parts of it that I really liked, and other parts that kind of dragged. I was never in a rush to get back to the audiobook, so I would set it down for days at a time. It's one of those novels that I like better now that it is over. The book is above average, and I'm still glad I listened to it. Overall rating: 4.09 stars

I finished this a couple weeks ago, but with life being crazy and my need to process, I never posted. This book has so many great things to love: music, pop culture history, mental health issues, fantasy elements, changing relationships, and more. It starts with the formation of rise of the band Utopia Avenue in the 1960s, and follows their rise as it alternates points of view between the band mates. David Mitchell‘s writing is lovely as always.

Can a song change the world?
“If a song plants an idea or a feeling in a mind, it has already changed the world.”

The lyrics, the music, the war, the drugs, the Haight, the Summer of Love, The Grateful Dead, the Eight of Cups, the Third Planet, the end. Wow- to a child brought up by her mother on this time, San Francisco in the 1960s, the music - it is all here- plus David Mitchell‘s time and space bending characters from here and now and then and yet to come. Other than that I'm enjoying it so far, but only a few pages in to be honest.

Mitchell readalong anyone?

I haven‘t gotten to Utopia Avenue yet, mostly because I want to start at the beginning and read/re-read all of Mitchell‘s previous books.

I‘m swamped with ARCs and book club books at the minute so am not likely to start this until maybe October but would anyone like to join me in a readalong?

If we include his 2016 novella then it‘s 9 books so would be quite long and people could always dip in and out.

Book club unanimously picked this one for our September meeting. She's a chunky one so I thought about starting it....but I don't know?! 😜
