In Harm's Way
In Harm's Way: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of Its Survivors | Doug Stanton
A harrowing, adrenaline-charged account of America's worst naval disaster -- and of the heroism of the men who, against all odds, survived. On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered: How did the navy fail to realize the Indianapolis was missing? Why was the cruiser traveling unescorted in enemy waters? And perhaps most amazing of all, how did these 317 men manage to survive?Interweaving the stories of three survivors -- the captain, the ship's doctor, and a young marine -- journalist Doug Stanton has brought this astonishing human drama to life in a narrative that is at once immediate and timeless. The definitive account of a little-known chapter in World War II history, In Harm's Way is destined to become a classic tale of war, survival, and extraordinary courage.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pure nightmare fuel. Q: What‘s more horrifying than being on a sinking ship? A: Being swarmed by relentless feasting sharks. What these crewmen went through is truly beyond comprehension. Everything that could possibly go wrong indeed did. It was 1945. Technology was not what it is now. Was the captain at fault? It was war. Awful things happen. Absolutely captivating history, but so very, very sad.

Reggie Like I had always wondered if it was made up but the guy from Jaws. The older man who takes Brody out on the boat tells of this story while they‘re drinking. 2y
peaKnit This was a tough story, it‘s amazing what people can endure. 2y

britt_brooke @Reggie I haven‘t seen Jaws in such a long time, but this book mentions the film. Supposedly that‘s Spielberg‘s favorite scene. 2y
britt_brooke @peaknit Absolutely! 2y
ravenlee There‘s a relatively recent book that focuses more on the captain‘s role and the fight to exonerate him. It probably has a lot of similar info, though. My husband (NOT a reader, but a serious military history buff) said it was really good. (edited) 2y

Soccer manager life! 😅 Sitting in the school pick up line, listening to a good book, and getting some scheduling/organizing done. It‘s a lot of work, but I‘m fortunate to have the time to do it. Love my son‘s team!

Not pictured: Champ 🐾 snoozing in the passenger seat.

HotMessJess I may not be a soccer manager, but damn do I respect that spreadsheet grind 2y
britt_brooke @HotMessJess 😂 A good spreadsheet is oddly satisfying. 2y
Megabooks Well done! Champ 💜 Such a sweet boy! 2y

One_With_Books Well. My sister just sent me a video of my nephew (he‘s 4) dancing and singing the baby shark song so that‘s what song came to mind 😅 5y

The full title contains #extraordinary and the men described certainly were. I trusted my old boss with my books. Silly me, I forgot to ask for this book when I started a new job in October. 😣 #SeasonsReafings2017. @RealLifeReading

CocoReads I bought this for my dad for his birthday in September. He said it was really good. 6y
Godmotherx5 @CocoReads Oh, I loved it. I‘m sorry for what happened but it enhanced my knowledge. The writer did well keeping names straight. I hate when there are a lot of characters & they blend with one another. I felt for the “friends” I made while reading. The documentary is also great. http://deadline.com/2016/04/uss-indianapolis-the-legacy-documentary-began-two-de... 6y

In Harm's Way is probably my favorite military history book, and today the news broke that they had found the wreckage after 72 years. (Remember Quint's speech in Jaws? Yeah, THAT boat.) https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/08/19/us/uss-indianapolis-wrec...

Wow, what an audiobook. Remember the scene in Jaws when the crazy boat captain guy talks about what happened when his boat sank during WWII? This is the full story.

Bookwormjillk This is the first book I've listened to for the #armchairaudies. If they're all this good I'm not sure how I can pick just one! 7y
Godmotherx5 I bought the paperback last summer. You peaked my interest in the audio version. 7y
