Holy shit you guys, this book was amazing! I wasn‘t expecting to like it this much. I wasn‘t able to push pause on this audio. Seriously, you need to read/listen right now. It‘s a perfect summer fun read.

I love reading a passage that isn‘t part of my culture, in a city I have never been to, but something about the order of those words, the feelings they invoke become real. I can feel what the author is reaching for. A memory that is a feeling, but also a smell, a taste. I love when good literature does this.

Ask Again, Yes: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane

Ah yes, literary fiction done oh so right! There were sentences in here so perfect that I would pause and reflect on its resonance through my soul (not an exaggeration people!). While there is one main event that drives the book, it is mostly focused on character development. Character driven books can sometimes bore me, however, Keane kept me engaged with her characters. Even the less likable ones.

This was a strange book for me. I‘m not huge into sci-fi, however, Fforde created a whole world here with its own history and industry. While reading it, I kept picturing who would play the characters when it got made into a movie. And I do hope it gets made into a movie!!

Pickpick

A friend of mine told me I just had to read this book, and she was right! Westover‘s point of view felt original and new. Her writing style was factual but contemplative, and there were times I actually said wow out loud. Education is obviously what she feels brought her up out of the muck of isolation and abuse. And I can definitely get on board with that. I‘ve already made this a Christmas gift for friends.

Copwithabook @gradcat it actually is an interesting story. The guy on the balcony next to mine was smoking marijuana and turns out he was dealing on the boat. He tried tossing something overboard while we were in port. So they tried to arrest him. I jumped in to help bc they were getting there asses kicked. 7mo

Oh how I wish I had liked this more. This was a book I was very much looking forward to, however, it fell short of the mark. I commend her thorough effort to have all the stories woven together and interconnected but I almost had to take notes to unravel this Celtic knot of a story. And jumping around through time made it difficult to dive back in each time I picked up the book.

This book blew. My. Mind! I like fairy tale retellings and this one perfectly entwined and blurred the lines between reality and fantasy. It also helped that the fantasy parts were a little dark and creepy. I can honestly say when the twist came, I did not see it coming. I was so invested in these characters that it was sad to come to the end of this tale.

I‘m not sure why I only found this so-so. I liked Charlotte as a character but I didn‘t really care what happened to the others. If this wasn‘t a library book with a deadline to turn in (always gives me a reason to compulsively read), I could have put this book down at any point and not cared that I hadn‘t finished it. It just didn‘t wow me.

I‘m recommending this book knowing it will not be right for every reader. The women‘s trials and tribulations were terrible and brought me to tears. However, Nafisi counterbalances that with the hope and escape she finds in literature. She waxes on quite academically about the great literature, which I think would be a turn off for most readers. For me though, this book will never leave my shelves.

I used my gym time to help finish this book. I decided this was so-so. I found it slow going. And while I know that the horrific things that happened to these girls does happen to women in real life (which is horrific), the constant knocks they took felt hopeless while reading it. It was like seeing a puppy get kicked over and over, and I can‘t say I enjoyed that while reading.

Librariana Emotionally challenging books like that do ask a bit of us as readers and it definitely takes a type of strength to read about tragic experiences. I don't think anyone would enjoy reading about characters continuously getting knocked down 😔 10mo

Sing, Unburied, Sing May be the only magical realism that I‘ve ever read and actually really enjoyed. I am so blown away by this novel!
