Yay! Goodreads reading challenge completed! 😀😁😊💜📚

But with six months still left in the year, and with a portion of these being picture books for storytime prep, I'd definitely like to read another 50+ that are a healthy combo/balance of middle grade, YA, and literary adult fiction.

So let's get to it!

A souvenir from our recent Mother's Day holiday trip to Texas - a #Starbucks #travelmug 😍

Hubby and I got to meet our sweet little niece for the very first time and she was just as perfect as I knew she'd be!

Now that we're back in the Pacific Northwest, I'm diving into a book of poems that reminds me of my youth and of our little border town of El Paso 🇺🇸❤🇲🇽

Lost and Wanted: A Novel | Nell Freudenberger

#Independentbookstoreday was pretty phenomenal, and although I'm a day late, I wanted to share our spoils with all of you, friendly Littens.

• Hubby got the "Trees and Shrubs" tome since we are working on fixing up our front and back yards.

• The very adorably apropos board book about "Bookstore Babies" is for our 5-month-old niece who we'll be meeting for the first time in just a few days.

• "Smile" is for her 11-yr-old sister.

Happy #independentbookstoreday, fellow Littens!

The hubby and I are having a linner (late lunch/early dinner) of yummy, yummy salt & pepper fish with jalapeño ponzu dipping sauce, accompanied by tasty egg flour soup AND scrumptious sushi 😍😍😍

After that, we are hitting our favorite indie here in Spokane - Auntie's Bookstore! - before grabbing some coffee for dessert. It's a wonderful day to be a book nerd! 😊💜📚

Took myself out to lunch last week and this was my reading companion. This is our current #bookclubread, but I'm also listening to "the life-changing magic of not giving a f*ck". This last one has gotten a little repetitive for me and I don't necessarily agree with the majority of her sentiments, but it's definitely been helpful in questioning some of my habits and putting things in perspective.

Have any of you heard any more about this?

I got a slightly cryptic email from #BarnesandNoble with little information but a tempting, enticing message about #TBRlists being long, the upcoming #bookhaul being short, and the countdown beginning.

All I could find online were news articles about last year's August blowout sale...

And if this one is anything like that one, it'll be quite a treat!

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing although my husband is silently cursing you 😂😂😂😂😂😂 6mo
Reecaspieces I could not find anything either. Glad to know I am not alone! 6mo
Ashley_Nicoletto I asked the girl working the register when I was in the store on Friday about it. She said they will be pulling hundred of books (not the bargain books just normal books off the shelves) and putting them on tables in the front and they will all be half off. Members get to start shopping them on Tuesday. Everyone else Wednesday. 6mo

Librariana @Cinfhen - To borrow from the wise words of Millie of Bob's Burgers fame (in "The Millie-churian Candidate" episode), "I'm strong... I have to be strong... for Wagstaff." Except in my case, I'm strong because it's a tough job to spread the bookish news! But I'll do it! For Litsy ? 6mo
Librariana @Reecaspieces - There's definitely news articles about the last blowout sale on August 2018 because it was their very first... and I attended that one! Scored some stuff for my bestie, too. But this time around, little to no coverage. No matter! I'll be there anyway! 6mo
Librariana @Ashley_Nicoletto - Then it'll be just like the one last August and I looooved that one! I walked away with 3 books that had been on my TBR list AND a cool new tote 😁 Will definitely be checking this one out, too! Thanks for the 411, Ashley! 😊💜📚 6mo
Cinfhen I hope it‘s available online too!!! Because I can‘t physically get inside a B&N #ExpatLife 😫😫😫 6mo
Librariana @Cinfhen - I'm sure you've seen it by now, but it is available online too!! Did you score any goodies? 6mo
Cinfhen I did see and no, there really wasn‘t anything that screamed out at me🙁How about you? Do you bring home a #bookhaul ?!?!? 6mo
Librariana @Cinfhen - Not quite a haul, my dear... just picked up one from the sale area - 6mo
Librariana @Cinfhen - in regards to the ⬆️, it is one I've read and wanted to have in my collection so that worked out quite well! Nothing else really jumped out at me other than one I already own - 6mo

Finished:

I even "unhauled" a small couple that I no longer wanted to read and will be great additions to a future library sale.

The Poet X | Elizabeth Acevedo

Pickpick

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Novels in verse... are not really my jam. I do not gravitate towards them. And yet... with this one... I heard great things about the audiobook version as it was narrated by the author, herself a spoken word artist.

The praise was well deserved.

Listening to Acevedo share Xiomara's story gave it depth, feeling, and context I probably would've missed out on had I only read the text.

Continued below ⬇️

Librariana I saw a little bit of myself in Xiomara... in her relationship with her mother and her religion... in her traditions and her upbringing. And what a gift it is to see a little bit of ourselves in a character... to have a book held up to us like a mirror.

This was both a phenomenal listening and reading experience as I would recommend any reader enjoy both simultaneously if possible.

I took a page from @silentrequiem 's book to think about and write down manageable monthly as well as ongoing #readinggoals for 2019. I'd love to be like so many of you admirable Littens and read more than 9 books a month, but with a peculiar work schedule and typical time constraints, I'll probably, as she so well phrased it, allow for books to "count for more than one category". Wish me luck! ???

Expected something a little different from this. Had higher hopes for more substantial craft and recipe ideas as well as better suggestions to make the winter months a little less dreary. Almost seven months ago, my husband and I moved from Illinois to start new jobs and settle down in Washington state.

Now we're doing it all over again except this time... we're moving out of our apartment and into our OWN HOME!!!! 😃🏡😍

In the wise words of Mr. Kate (of book and YouTube fame), OMG We Bought a House!

Let the book packing commence!

Hooked_on_books Congrats! What an exciting move! 9mo
Puredragonstar Omg congratulations!!! So I have many questions because this is exactly what my husband and I want to do in two years. We are trying to move from Miami FL to Washington State! 1.How did you move across the country we were thinking about a pod? Then driving our cars with pets there. 2.Did you have the job before going? 3.Did you visit before moving? 4.Homeless problem is what‘s scaring me from that state, I‘m sure I‘m blowing it out of proportion? 9mo
Librariana @Hooked_on_books - Thank you so much, Holly! 😃 You're always so kind 💜 It definitely is an exciting move and a bit of an adult-affirming one! Like holy cow, we're grown ups and are gonna owe SO much money for the next 20+ years! But we know it's a worthy investment and we're greatly looking forward to having our own place that's ours (and the bank's... but I'm glad they're willing to share it - lol!) 9mo

Librariana Hello, @Puredragonstar! 🤗 So this may have to be a multiple part answer, but here we go! 1. How did we move? My husband was retiring from the military, so we were tremendously fortunate that that was arranged for us. It was good old fashioned packers and a humongous moving truck! I think a POD is not a bad idea at all!! 9mo
Librariana @Puredragonstar - 2. Yes, I did secure a job before moving. That's all actually documented here on Litsy - lol! 😁😊 I interviewed for my old library system and they were very willing to do a Skype interview. My husband secured his job once we got here. 9mo
Librariana @Puredragonstar - 3. We actually used to live in the area (for over 6 years!) before getting orders to IL, so it made the decision really easy to want to come back (plus, we had persistent friends who wanted us to retire here - lol!) 9mo
Christine Congrats!! (My husband is military too, 9mo
JoScho Yay!!! 9mo
Librariana @Puredragonstar - 4. I think it's easy for all of us to worry, but I try to have faith in the local agencies who work tirelessly to provide assistance to our homeless population. We've actually received training on how to best serve this group at our libraries and I hope you'll consider the many positive attributes this state has to offer 😊 (which I'm sure you have if you and your hubby want to move here!) Washington welcomes you! 🌲💙 9mo
Puredragonstar I was stationed there before (I was in the Navy) but the horror stories of thousands of needles and people breaking in make me nervous especially with such a beautiful place. So I‘m sure it‘s just negative news that I follow. I really want to move back and I thank you for the information! Good luck with the move! 9mo

A book club is an interesting concept.

Bringing a diverse group of people together with varied tastes and asking them all to read the same book can yield some passionate opinions.

The last time I met with mine, before my return to the Pacific Northwest, was in 2014. Things have changed a bit in 4 years and now that I'm back, the lists and record-keeping have returned 😊

Bailedbailed

I swear I have a sense of humor!
But this book was simply not for me 😕

I went into this thinking it was a nonfiction title... possibly a memoir... but was sorely disappointed when I began to notice a pattern with the characters (i.e. caricatures of lousy female stereotypes), figured out it was satire, and then noticed the spine label on this library loan.

Made it all the way to page 27 of 274 and then promptly abandoned it.

Bookcation74 It‘s so good to see that someone else bailed on this one too!! It actually made me uncomfortable how untrue the depiction of female friendship was... 13mo
MarriedtoMrT I‘m bailing, too. I made it through January and that‘s all I could take. I understand what they were trying to do, I think, but all of those women were awful to each other! 13mo
Librariana @Bookcation74 and @MarriedtoMrT - Oh, I am so glad to be in good company and not be alone on this! I saw that plenty of other Littens found it funny and I felt self-conscious having a strong difference of opinion, but it did make me uncomfortable to continue reading it. Any time I'd pick it up, I felt a sense of dread about continuing. I was tired of rolling my eyes! I really had hoped for something different 😔 13mo

SandyW I was touting with reading this as a palate cleanser at some point in the future, but I don't need to spend time with awful people, especially in print! Thanks. 13mo
Kaylamburson Thanks, @Librariana. It‘s always hard since there are so many good books to waste time with ones you don‘t like, but at least it was quick! 13mo
Librariana No problem, @SandyW. I would never discourage anyone from giving a book a try simply because I didn't care for it, but maybe I just don't have the right sense of humor for it. The characters were cliches, caricatures of stereotypes, and examples of just some of the worst traits in people. I got that it was satire, but when you find fictional characters to be insufferable, you bow out. 13mo
Augustdana These characters are insufferable but I love it ????? Thanks for your review and your honesty! It‘s so weird to think about things we like and don‘t like. And WHY. Sorry I‘m just reading this book now and seeing your review. 12mo

Some light, adorable bedtime reading. And I don't know if looking at thousands of cute doggos, ooo-ing and aawww-ing at their precious faces really counts as 'reading'.

We're gonna say yes... yes, it does.

😍❤🐶

HKGirl Aww, love that Instagram account! I didn't know they had a book. 13mo
SledgeReader Oh, it counts! #dogsoflitsy 13mo
Librariana @HKGirl - I didn't know they had an Instagram account! Lol 😄😁😊 They also have a new book - 13mo

The paper quilling on the cover of this book's dust jacket really caught my eye and when I opened it to look at the blurb, I was both surprised and touched by the post-it message inside.

I realize the words weren't meant to be for me, but I still found the sentiment to be so lovely; the act itself such an encouraging gesture to its eventual reader.

I hope whoever purchases this book receives this reminder at a time they need it most ❤

Pickpick

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The combination of multiple point-of-view accounts; the individual stories of each sibling (Varya and Simon's being my two favorites, Daniel a close second) and how these in turn connected to each other in small, narrative details; brilliantly, brutally honest dialogue exchanges between main and secondary characters; how the premise of this novel was carried out - all of these components made this family saga a five star read for me.

#Currentlyreading and truly enjoying!

I find myself underlining passages, boldly highlighting others (mostly dialogue, it seems), and jotting down questions as they come to me in preparation for book club discussion next week.

This title was my selection and I'm a bit nervous about what the other gals will think, but I'm also looking forward to the suggestions they'll bring to the table for future consideration.

valeriegeary I loved this one! And it's a great book club pick! 1y

🎶 And I'm feeling... 🎶 blue? 🤔😄😁😊

The tagged book is one I'm very curious to read! I found the image beside it quite fascinating as it shows the various stages of the collaborative process between book cover designer Erin Fitzsimmons and illustrator Simon Prades.

The mini Ghoulia Yelps toy collection is my own 😊💙

Blue Manolo Blahniks and blue macarons (which I've never tried before!) round out this #ManicMonday collage.

Using dictionary pages to decorate a lampshade = "the very DEFINITION of frugal design."

I see what you did there, Country Living ?

I love it! ???

Another neat idea that involves print - a reupholstered reading chair!

What text would you consider uploading and printing?

Makes me think of people who've written passages from Harry Potter on their walls 😊 Would you ever consider doing something like that?

#bookishdecor #athomewithbooks

TheBookAddict I would love to be able to do something like this. I don‘t know what passage I would pick. It‘s such a tough choice. 1y
Librariana @TheBookAddict - Right?? I wonder if it would it be too cliché/predictable to choose a passage from 1y
TheBookAddict @Librariana lol, I was thinking the same thing when I saw this. 1y

Some vintage-y, cute ideas all around, but this one was especially bookish and lovely. Have any of you decorated your homes (or home libraries, reading nooks) with accents such as this one?

tonyahoswalt I love this idea. 1y
Librariana Me too, @tonyahoswalt! When I saw it, I immediately wanted to find a lamp base just like it to fill with dictionary pages! 😄😍💜📚 1y

Went from a boring, blank wall to something quite breathtaking! 😊💙🌲

It is a treat to spend time here reading. Hopefully it won't prompt too much daydreaming or be too distracting in the future!

One of the perks of the job: Advance Reader's Editions 😁

I realize both of these are already out, but now that I know these are available to us (and where we can get access to them!), I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for future goodies.

Mehso-so

🌟🌟
For me, this was just OK and was a title chosen by my book club gals. It's not my kinda read since mysteries with unreliable narrators are really not my jam.

I was disappointed that there was quite a bit of build up for a somewhat lackluster ending.

However, I did think that the investigative/puzzle-solving angle along with the switch between first person POV and secondary character accounts were interesting storytelling techniques.

ferskner Agreed - the solution wasn't as mind-blowing as the promise of the setup. 1y
Reviewsbylola I liked this one more than I expected. Lou was so annoying though. 1y
Librariana Yes, @ferskner! Totally with you on that one! I kept wondering if the incident at the very beginning of the book would somehow be tied to the entire ordeal, but it seemed to just end up being supportive evidence of the main character's unreliability/emotional state. 1y
Librariana @Reviewsbylola - I had never read anything by the author, although I've heard plenty of people praise her other works. I'm glad you liked it more than you originally thought you would! 😄 I went into it hoping this title would prove my dislike wrong... but needless to say, it didn't 😉 I might give something like this a try in the future, but not any time soon. 1y

It's my day off and the hubby and I are at a quaint little local bakery, reading our individual books - he, Marvel 1872; me, the tagged title above as well as Slam! (vol. 1) and The Woman in Cabin 10 - and enjoying - he, a huckleberry Italian soda; me, a soy, white chocolate mocha. Oh! And fresh baked peanut butter cookies! Yum!

Well, Littens...
This should be the last of my #25infive collage photos 😄

I did not make as much progress as I would've liked, but as I've shared in previous posts, the hubby and I are preparing for a move to our new home state of Washington and we are in extreme organizing/packing mode!

Thank you to both @Ashley_Nicoletto - for bringing this over from Instagram - and to @Andrew65 for his kind and enthusiastic encouragement!

Andrew65 We will miss your lovely collages. You should feel exceptionally proud of the tone you achieved given everything else going on. In the circumstances a stunning total, and thanks for taking part! Hope to repeat it in a few months with more notice if there is any interest. 🙌🎉👏🍾🎈💐🥂🎉🙌🎈🍾👏🥂💐🏆 1y
Cinfhen Well done!!! Sorry I had to miss out @Andrew65 but hope to try another time 💓 1y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen Hopefully we can advertise a future one, we only found out about this one about the time it was starting. 1y
