Bailedbailed

This was supposed to be my pick for #booked2021 #bakedgoodsoncover but I will have to find another one.

When I found myself bored 10 chapters in, I decided to bail. I wS already annoyed by the use of the R word for a person with an intellectual disability.

Good thing I have a back up book for the baked goods prompt!

Scochrane26 The “r” word may bother us now, but the DSM still classified intellectual disability as mental retardation until around 2012-13. The agency I worked for at the time had to change their name because it was part of the title. now

The story of Cyril avery from 1945 when his 16 yr old mother is hauled out of her pew by a priest + publicly humiliated as a whore in mass, through to hid final days had me at times laughing out loud to blubbing + wiping my eyes. A wonderful book that highlights the hypocrisy of religion, the definition of love,+ the fragility of humanity. I cld talk abt it for days 5*.

How I spent my Sunday. I stayed away from social media and read the whole book in one day. I haven't done that in a few years. It was the perfect light frothy romance I needed and I loved it. I'll be sure to read the next two. Another 329 pages for #NovelNovember for a total of 681 of my 700-page goal. Also #Frenemies for #Booked2021 @Andrew65 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen Yay!!!! I love to unplug some days!! So glad the book delivered 🥳 4d

This is a heartwarming, inspiring, humourous book written by a gay man in his early 50s who placed an ad 30 years ago seeking his first partner. He kept 13 letters from men whom he never met up with, and the book consists of their brief responses followed by longer reflections from him on gay identity, coming out, transitioning from youth to adulthood, AIDS, changes in the last 30 years, and more.

Cinfhen This sounds great. Will keep in mind for #Booked2022 #AboutAids 5d
Singout Yes: AIDS is more of a sidebar than a core theme, as the writer, like me, was a teen when AIDS emerged and therefore wasn‘t part of the generation that was really devastated. However, he does address its impact on the community. 5d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds very interesting! 5d
BarbaraTheBibliophage I will definitely stack this one! 5d

This captured my attention first because one of the narrators is Dion Graham, whose voice I love, and because it was inspired by the Spoon River Anthology. It‘s a multiplicity of rich voices, of various ages, genders, and classes, sharing their stories of life together in Harlem with its joys and struggles.

Cinfhen Dion Graham is my FAVORITE male narrator!!! LOVE his rich voice ♥️ 5d
Singout Right??? I did a search on my library site to find his readings. André Alexis is also wonderful, but he only reads his own books. 5d
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds awesome! 5d

I got this book recommendation from a Book Tuber I follow. She said it was a hidden gem, so I decided to use it for my #BOOKED2021 “hidden gem”. It was an interesting story and the audiobook was very good. Three lightkeepers disappeared without a trace. There were 2 timelines: when it happened and 20 years later. You hear the words of the 3 women left behind given to a writer. Solve it? #136 #BookSpinBingo #3 #BFC21 #BOOKED2021 #NovelNovember

Cinfhen Great choice 😊 6d

This was short and beautiful: a significant Holocaust survivor's reflection on having had open-heart surgery at age 82 and the questions, fears, memories, and values it raised. He looks at whether he has done enough, his relationship with his father and son, his relationship with his own body, and desire for a future that might not come.
