Something Wicked This Way Comes
Something Wicked This Way Comes | Ray Bradbury
Few American novels written this century have endured in th heart and mind as has this one-Ray Bradbury's incomparable masterwork of the dark fantastic. A carnival rolls in sometime after the midnight hour on a chill Midwestern October eve, ushering in Halloween a week before its time. A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two inquisitive boys standing precariously on the brink of adulthood will soon discover the secret of the satanic raree-show's smoke, mazes, and mirrors, as they learn all too well the heavy cost of wishes -- and the stuff of nightmare.

Anyone else feel this way about 0300?? Love how Bradbury writes❤️😩

RaeLovesToRead Ha! I'm at my most awake and alive between 1200am-3am 😄 2w
451Degrees @RaeLovesToRead that‘s crazy! I used to work swing shift and would get home around one but would always be asleep before three! Do you work a night shift? 2w
RaeLovesToRead Nope... just nocturnal... I am not a morning person though and if it gets as late as 4am/5am I'll be exhausted! Usually it'll get to midnight and I'll suddenly be wide awake 😅 2w
451Degrees @RaeLovesToRead that‘s probably frustrating at times!😬 I‘m definitely not a morning person either😆 2w

Alrighty Littens! This is my pick for our book club. I love Bradbury but I‘m a little nervous about this one since it‘s dubbed as a bit of horror-esque. Hoping I picked an ok one! Onward!

Will & Jim, kids on the verge of adulthood see an old train roll into town after midnight as an eerie calliope plays. The carnival is in town!

Dark & Mr Cooger. Illustrated man. The carousel & what it does! CREEP EEE!

I loved the dad, Charles. He was the dad you don‘t hear about these days. The hero who‘s a janitor at the library. The library scene! So good!

What a delightfully creepy story! Much much better than Dandelion Wine!!

Who doesn‘t like that quote during this spooky month? I decided to host my own monthlong October readathon as a way for participants from either #Scarathlon2021 team to gain extra points (all other littens welcome as well!) For those who don‘t bother with readathons during #Scarathlon here‘s an easy one to gain you 10 points for every hour read - the only rule: there has to be the element of Wickedness involved ⬇️

StayCurious (be it creature or killer, supernatural or real crime - if you can justify it, it works). Any hour spent reading your wicked story gains you 10 points! There are no sign ups, but feel free to tag me in you #wickedathon posts so I can see what you‘re reading. By the pricking of my thumbs….Have a wicked good time this month! @Clwojick 2mo

"Oh, what strange wonderful clocks women are. They nest in Time. They make the flesh that holds fast and binds eternity. They live inside the gift, know power, accept, and need not mention it. Why speak of time when you are Time, and shape the universal moments, as they pass, into warmth and action? How men envy and often hate these warm clocks, these wives, who know they will live forever."- RB ?️

I cannot believe how enthralled I am with this book. The horror, the fascination, the anguish, and delight of wishing to be older or younger. Manipulating time is tempting and when an evil carnival owner tempts you, you better hope you have someone to help you as Jim had Will. The language is beautifully descriptive and scary at the same time. Bradbury is a genius. I can honestly say I enjoyed this horror novel.

2.5 stars, but try it for yourself. This is only the second book I read by Bradbury but I'm starting to think I'm just not a fan of his writing style. He gets a bit repetitive and always has at least one character that monologues and it just feels like a giant information dump. The underlying story with intriguing but I did find that I had to go back and re-read either a paragraph or a page or two to fully grasp what was the going on. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe it's just me and I'm an idiot but this is just okay for me. I may watch the movie to see if this is one of the cases where I enjoy the movie better than the book.

Another reread for me. Perfect autumn book and I plowed through in a couple days (which was nice because Rebecca took longer for me).

Side note here, I‘ll highlight the fact that while my bookmark states the truth, in the case of the screen adaptation you really can *almost* judge this book by its movie; it‘s fantastic and there are some changes that I think improve the story (he wrote the screenplay too so it‘s not sacrilegious).

Jim and Will, aged 13, excited about a carnival that comes to town soon realize it‘s not what it seems. This carnival is filled with evil people looking to add to their crew. With the help of Will‘s Dad, Mr. Halloway they fight to save themselves from this evil.

A good read. I found the writing, at times, a bit too much for my taste. But some parts were just wonderful and Mr. Halloway - a great character.

My last attempt at a full cast audio didn‘t go very well, but I‘m glad I gave it another shot. This one was by Boston‘s Colonial Radio Players and it included all sound effects! Also, this dramatization was done by Bradbury, so I feel the integrity of the story remained intact. I remember seeing this movie when I was pretty young and finding it pretty creepy. I‘ve wanted to read the book for a long time, and #AuthorAMonth was a great excuse!

Bradbury has a way of using short sentences and repetitive phrases that brought out the horror from a young boy‘s eyes. This is an old school scary carnival story. Fun! Great if you want to get in a Halloween-ish mood.

Who remembers Disney‘s adaptation of this classic? The movie was one of my favorite “kid friendly horror movies” growing up. As for the book, it took me back to my childhood and I can see why it made for such a fun adaptation. I listened to both the regular audiobook and the Colonial Radio Theatre production of it, highly recommend both.
