Something Wicked This Way Comes
Something Wicked This Way Comes | Ray Bradbury
Few American novels written this century have endured in th heart and mind as has this one-Ray Bradbury's incomparable masterwork of the dark fantastic. A carnival rolls in sometime after the midnight hour on a chill Midwestern October eve, ushering in Halloween a week before its time. A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two inquisitive boys standing precariously on the brink of adulthood will soon discover the secret of the satanic raree-show's smoke, mazes, and mirrors, as they learn all too well the heavy cost of wishes -- and the stuff of nightmare.

Being at a kid‘s amusement park at night spooked me out a bit and made me think of the tagged book! It was “nostalgia night” and I went with my fiancé‘s family. We had a good time but nobody would have appreciated me bringing up Ray Bradbury so I‘m doing it here ?

I've been wanting to read this book for a while and when i did get the chance, it did not disappoint. The title alone sounds so intriguing. I would personally describe this book as a freak show written by an author whose poetic prose will force you to introspect your own life. The only thing I regret is not reading this in October, because it is a perfect Halloween read.

sudi Apparently Disney made a movie adaptation of this book😱. I had no idea Disney made movies like this, it was made in the 80's i think, i definitely have to watch it. 1w
Eggs 💗 Bradbury. Agree with your thoughts in his writing ✍🏻 1w

This may not be the best book to listen to while mowing grass in 80 degree weather but it‘s definitely a good listen. It took awhile for me to connect with the story but I‘m pretty engaged now. All in all, it makes me crave fall. Or I just don‘t want to mow grass for another four months.

When I was a teen, I don't think this book would have appealed to me. Even now, I struggled with the first of it, not able to connect to the two boys as characters. But then Charles Halloway entered the picture. Not sure how I feel about Bradbury calling a 54 year-old “old" about 100 times, but Charles is the best. When he entered the story, the entire thing fell into place for me. I could appreciate the creepiness & fears & atmosphere more.

Ericalambbrown I need to read this. When I was 10, Disney (of all companies?) made this into a movie. I believe Mr. Bradbury was the screenwriter. I loved it. It introduced me to Jason Robards, Diane Ladd, Jonathan Pryce . . . . . I can‘t believe I never went back to read the source. I must do that. 🤓 2mo

I have wanted to read this book for years, because it is one of those books that influenced so much that came after it. While I loved the writing, there were parts that were slow or hard to imagine. But overall, I really enjoyed the themes that were explored and seeing the place this book has in literary history.

This book was a magical rollercoaster of ups, downs and barrel rolls. It is so whimsically written that you can almost get lost. I dearly loved the symbolism and underlying meaning of everything. #nofemmeber

Billypar I never actually knew what this was about, only the title. Sounds intriguing from the description! 7mo
britt_brooke @Billypar I didn‘t care for it myself, but I know a lot of folks who loved it. 7mo
Cinfhen This actually sounds good. What genre would you put it under??? 7mo
Cinfhen I‘m loving the image you used as well...what‘s it from???? 7mo
britt_brooke @Cinfhen It‘s considered dark fantasy and/or horror, but I found it cheesy rather than scary. I forgot to credit the photo, but it‘s a scene from the 1983 film (which looks better than the book, IMO). 🙈 (edited) 7mo

⭐️⭐️ Let‘s be honest, Jim Nightshade‘s name was my favorite part. I had a hard time visualizing the story which sometimes happens to me with fantasy elements. Cooger and Dark‘s Pandemonium Shadow Show was supposed to be dark and sinister, but felt unrealistic and cheesy. It wasn‘t scary nor emotionally evocative. The audio was well done, but maybe I would‘ve been better off reading it in print? We‘ll never know because I‘m not reading it again.

Booksnchill Well I 5⭐️ it in print so I cannot speak to the audio but I did grow up in the 60s🤪sorry you didn‘t like it but Bradbury‘s Greentown books are very much his memories of his childhood I have heard - I‘m going to read others. 8mo
britt_brooke @Booksnchill I‘m definitely in the minority. 😆 Most reviews are good. I just couldn‘t picture it at all, so it never grabbed me. 8mo

What a haul I‘ve received! Thank you!! I haven‘t read any of these books and I‘m dying to jump in! Where did you get that Shirley Jackson? That cover! I‘d have added the candy to the photo (an entire store‘s worth in there!) but I made the mistake of putting it on the coffee table. My husband and daughter are currently munching away while watching Hocus Pocus. I think I‘ll make a cup of tea and start Drood. Your recommendation was intriguing!!

Readergrrl I love all of the books!!! I do think I‘m starting with Drood. I often 2-3 books at once, but this may keep me a monogamist. 8mo
Readergrrl @bookcollecter you‘ve read it 3-4 times? I‘m mighty impressed!! 775 pages!!! That‘s not a book; that‘s Chevy V8 engine! 8mo
bookcollecter Haha well I'm biased as Dan Simmons is a personal favorite of mine. One reason is because he writes so well that 775pages seems like 75pages and you even feel disappointed that it isn't longer! But that's just my opinion you may have a different experience. This was so beautifully written. Bradbury has the soul of a poet! I loved how this story centers around the friendship of two young boys, but also deals with the relationship between father and son, and anyone facing their own mortality. Weird and wonderful, this classic is one that I‘ll definitely be revisiting in future Octobers. 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

I really enjoyed this book it was the perfect amount of spooky and suspense. What's better than a mysterious carnival with dark tents and creepy music playing pulling into a small town on the edge of nowhere a few days before Halloween to put shivers up and down your spine. The villains in this story are delightfully wicked and the heroes of the story are surprisingly refreshing. I highly recommend this book. Ray Bradbury has done it again!

I wanted so badly to like this book bc my husband is a big Bradbury fan, but I just couldn‘t do it. The writing is clever and so descriptive, it‘s fun to read. Some more Bradbury, and I love this for all the stories that could come from it. Continuations of the circus, the father's full fleshed musings, would be in themselves worth writing. But I love Bradbury's ability to create a mood (particularly seasonal moods) and hold it, without explicitly reminding what you're meant to be visualising.

Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade are the best friends, they run everywhere side by side. Then Cooger and Dark‘s Pandemonium Shadow Show comes to town. What follows is a nightmare of freakish dust witches, balloons and a dark carousel with a calliope calling the town promising youth, age and dreams. Ray Bradbury‘s writing is just so expressive, almost poetic at times and it draws such a terrible, scary atmosphere of this carnival.I loved this book
