Not my best week. Cat tax to make it better.
Run: 0/3 (pulled something and was sore all week)
No booze: 4/7 (I blew a tire. It‘s been a hard week lol)
40 ounces of water: 4/7 (but those days were all over 40, so win!)

Not the tagged book. I‘ve been feeling super burnt out lately and I was excited for this Audible Original this month. Peterson explores the unique ways we experience burn out, what causes us, and some of the ways we cope.

Not the tagged book and not a happy story. This GUTTED me this early Thursday. Isaac Gomez‘s one-woman play tells the stories of the murdered women of Juárez, ages 3-74, brutally and horrifically held. Say their names. Find the ones still missing. Seek justice.

Well. This was..timely. I hadn‘t read this one before but we have much much to learn today from this whole snafu. May we always hold our government accountable and support good journalism!

DrexEdit I was just saying this to my husband the other day: "this is exactly how Nixon went down!" 6d
Lynnsoprano Dating myself, but I read this when it originally came out, also The Final Days. Hubby and I recently rewatched the movie for the first time in years. It too is relevant to today‘s situation. It‘s an excellent demonstration of our need for a free press. 6d

Okay #GroupD here are some new suggestions for #LMPBC. I‘ve tagged them all below if you want to look into them. Anything jumping out at you?

Hestapleton Maybe tends a bit more sci-fi, but it‘s such a classic. 1w

Mogoeg Hi Group! I was thinking about The Red Clocks as well. I read Parable years ago but am probably due for a reread. California sounds intriguing. I‘ve never read War of the Worlds. 1w
Hestapleton @Mogoeg are the tagged books ones you are thinking about? I did recently read Future Home of the Living God, so I would prefer one of the others. 1w
Mogoeg This one looks intriguing too. Sorry about the multiple tags I still haven‘t quite mastered Litsy 1w
Mogoeg They‘re ones I thought we could. But it seems like we all have a book to start - or did we take The Testaments off the list because someone was already reading it? (edited) 1w
MeesesPieces @Mogoeg I‘ve read future home and I had started the testaments for another book club. The others sound great! 1w
Hestapleton @Mogoeg yeah I was going to do Testaments but since @MeesesPieces already started, I was going to do one of these! Just wanted to see if anyone had preference. 1w
MeesesPieces @hestapleton @mogoeg I also read war of the worlds (sorry I read a lot) but I‘ve always wanted to read Red Clocks and The Unit. 😀 1w
Hestapleton Okay unless @Hazel2019 has already done it, I‘ll do Red Clocks! The Unit looks interesting, but I don‘t have it and I try not to buy books as the holidays approach. 😬 @MeesesPieces @Mogoeg (edited) 1w
Hazel2019 @Hestapleton @mogoeg @MeesesPieces Red Clocks looks great! I was going to say that I‘d really like to read that one. So do we have all of our books decided? 1w

I was going to sit out the next round of #LMPBC to focus on the remaining books for my reading challenges BUT I couldn‘t resist a whole group for Dystopia—one of my favorite genres! There are still some slots available, if you want to sign up! Fellow #GroupD groupies, sound off in the comments! I‘m excited to start picking books!

https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/5080444aead2ca0ff2-l...

Hazel2019 I‘m part of the group, got some ideas for a book, will come back and comment with those in a bit. Can‘t wait!! 2w
Hazel2019 So I‘m thinking of choosing the Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa - it‘s new this year — what do you think? 2w
Hestapleton @Hazel2019 ooo that‘s on my TBR! I‘m thinking about THE TESTAMENTS (which is 420 pages) if y‘all haven‘t read it yet. We will have to see what the others say! 2w
See All 30 Comments
Hazel2019 @Hestapleton haven‘t read it yet but want to! 420 pages is reasonable in my opinion. How do we find out who else is in this group? I see names but not Litsy handles. 2w
Hestapleton @Hazel2019 @suvata will email us once all the groups are closed with everyone‘s Litsy name, email, and address so we can figure out book and where to send things. 2w
Mogoeg @Hestapleton @Hazel2019 I‘m in this group too! I‘m excited and up for The Testaments. I was also thinking about Waste Tide - recently translated from Chinese, or The Memory Police - a Japanese novel that I‘ve heard good things about. 2w
Hestapleton @Mogoeg yay welcome! I know @Hazel2019 was thinking about Memory Police and Waste Tide looks SO INTERESTING. 2w
Hazel2019 @Mogoeg welcome! Yes, how about I do Memory Police and you do Waste Tide? I‘d love to read it, this is going to be great 😁 1w
Mogoeg @Hazel2019 Oh, sorry! I didn't see your previous comment. Yes, that sounds perfect. I'll put myself down for Waste Tide. 🤓 1w
Hestapleton There is still one more of us—I think it‘s @MeesesPieces ? Did I guess right? Have any thoughts about our selections either way? Lol @Hazel2019 @Mogoeg (edited) 1w
Hazel2019 @Hestapleton @MeesesPieces @Mogoeg no worries! No final decisions on books until we all have a chance to opine 😁 1w
MeesesPieces Hi everyone!! Looking forward to reading everyone‘s books! 1w
Hazel2019 @MeesesPieces what book are you thinking of picking? @Mogoeg @Hestapleton 1w
MeesesPieces @Hazel2019 I‘m not sure yet. I‘m still trying to narrow it down. I have too many haha! What about you? And @Mogoeg @Hestapleton 1w
Hazel2019 @MeesesPieces check out the other comments in this threat 😊 let us know what you think! 1w
MeesesPieces @hazel2019 Sorry I didn‘t realize there were more comments! 😊 1w
MeesesPieces @hazel2019 @hestapleton @mogoeg I am about a quarter way into The Testaments right now. Are we choosing standalones only? And is YA dystopia ok or adult only? Either way is fine just narrowing all of my options. 😀 1w
Hazel2019 @MeesesPieces I‘d love to read some YA dystopia so I say include it as you‘re narrowing down options... @Hestapleton @Mogoeg what do you guys think? 😀 1w
Mogoeg @Hazel2019 @MeesesPieces I‘m fine with YA. Stand-alone or the first volume of a series is probably best, but I‘m flexible 1w
Hestapleton Yes definitely first in a series. I‘m down for YA too. I can choose something other than The Testaments! 1w
Hazel2019 @MeesesPieces @Hestapleton @Mogoeg are we all good with Memory Police? 1w
Mogoeg I am fine with Memory Police. I would like to do Waste Tide (as the book I start with) if that is okay with everyone. 1w
MeesesPieces @Mogoeg sounds like an awesome book! @Hazel2019 @Hestapleton I‘d like to read Scythe by Neal Shusterman if no one has read it. 1w
Hazel2019 @Mogoeg Sounds good!😀 1w
Hazel2019 @MeesesPieces Scythe sounds good! 1w
Hestapleton I‘m good with all of those! I‘ll troll my shelves this weekend and find some suggestions. :) @MeesesPieces @Hazel2019 @Mogoeg 1w
Mogoeg @MeesesPieces Scythe is one of my son‘s favorite books but I haven‘t read it yet so that sounds great. And it comes highly recommended my one YA reader at least! 1w

I had a hard time with this book at first, simply because the author/main character and I had wildly different high school experiences. But as the book went on, we got to know each other and became friends. The blurred line between author and narrator worked really well, reflecting the speaker‘s fractured and scattered mindset. I can‘t speak to the bipolar rep, but the book seemed honest. #netgalley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Greenwood is an automatic-buy author for me. Her first book was amazing and this one is just as compulsively readable. While the subject is heart-wrenching—a newborn with Downs is stolen from her mom and committed to a “school”—Greenwood writes beautiful my of a mother‘s love. The ending was a bit tidy, but I loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley

Nothing stunning. A cozy setting with family drama involving a sexual assault. This story could have been much deeper than it was, but it felt very surface level with a nice tidy ending. This is one topic that I do want to see portrayed grittily and Gyllenhaal couldn‘t get there. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘ve never had a child or lost a child and I think that made this book harder for me. Grief is slippery and so is this novel. As the speaker converses with her dead son about language and the nature time, I found myself getting lost. A good character introspection, but if plot-driven novels are your jam, skip this one. #netgalley Book 6/12 for #bfcr3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jensen has an easy, gripping way of writing. It felt like sitting back with an old friend and a drink, catching up on his life over the past few years. The middle was a little disjointed—I had a hard time keeping track of all of the different cases. The ending was a bit more “call to action” than I like from nonfiction, but I get it. If you watch a lot of Investigations Discovery at night, this is for you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley Book 5/12 for #bfcr3

My last book for #booked2019 summer! I chose this for genre busting, since it‘s fiction trapped very well inside a nonfiction guise. That said, this wasn‘t my cup of tea. Yikes. The frame narrative was completely unnecessary, but the characters there were the only ones I really liked being with. The narrator of the main story, Olivia, was completely self-absorbed and didn‘t help matters by having her story told, instead of shown. The ending was trite, even though it had some potential to go somewhere. Firm pass. #netgalley Book 4/12 for #bfcr3

A solid “meh.” This is less of a horror novel (or even thriller) and more of a novel about mean girls. It bore strong parallels (at least for me) to the Salem Witch Trials, for some reason. But it was mostly boring. The plot could have had a lot of propulsion, but it got bogged down in wandering writing that didn‘t really work. Blech. ⭐️⭐️

Hestapleton @DebbieGrillo haha, I thrift a lot and got some nice shoes when I worked at DSW and worked my employee discount hard. (edited) 2mo
DebbieGrillo @Hestapleton just as long as you're taking good care of your feet. I don't usually spend a lot on shoes either but love my birks and Saucony shoes. 2mo

wanderinglynn Wow! 🥃🥃🥃🥃 I love Waffle House! It was a staple in my college years. 😂 And I cant remember the last time I paid less than $50 for shoes! 2mo
Hestapleton @wanderinglynn hahaha my husband keeps telling me I need to go! 2mo
wanderinglynn It actually has good food, especially if you like breakfast foods. And in college, it was one of the few places open late, so we‘d go there after going to the bar or club. 😂 2mo

This book was raw and honest, though it has many triggers for eating disorders. Anna was a deeply relatable character. While I don‘t have an eating disorder, I related to Anna‘s struggle to lover her body, to feel like she was enough just as she was. The writing is good, propelling the reader through difficult content. A fast, important, book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Netgalley

This is a hard book to review! The writing was excellent. Nonfiction that wasn‘t dry and was still spectacularly researched. The subject was hard. Maraniss framed the Vietnam war from the perspectives of student activists at the University of Wisconsin, soldiers attacked in an ambush, and the White House. An important book to read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was an interesting look at the history of surgery. Each chapter focused on a particular surgical procedure, with a famous example grounding the chapter. However, the author often forgot the narrative grounding, which made the text disjointed and jarring. Not bad, but wouldn‘t read again. Not my favorite ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley Book 31/30 for #bfcr2

Week 5 wasn‘t half bad! I met my reading goal and had my longest streak ever on my daily devotions! While I‘m not perfectly hitting my goals, I‘m finding them slipping into habits. It‘s not as hard to remember to take my vitamin at work because it‘s part of my routine now and that‘s the best thing that could have come from this challenge! #bfcr2 #bookdragons

Hufflepuffle Well done you! That was a fab week! 3mo
