Still not a perfect #bookishfitnesschallenge week. Out of my four goals (books, water, walking, and veggies), I‘m tending to get 2 out of 4 every day. That two changes, but I‘m still getting half, so I‘m pretty happy about that. Warmer weather has meant more walks and being outside, which is nice. In this next week, I want to focus a lot more on water and walking.

I almost skipped this book, but I‘m so glad I didn‘t. The plot is fascinating, but the sleeping sickness isn‘t the focus of the book. I think the author wanted focus more on relationships and the ways we interact with each other. Despite that murkiness (at least for me) the writing was stunning and a super enjoyable read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me.

Happy first day of the #bookishfitnesschallenge !! I‘ll be off to a slow start: work is busy and I‘m moving so my two mile walk isn‘t likely until Monday (working this weekend). This is my second time reading, and it‘s still meh. The contrast between the beauty of the fair and the evil of Holmes‘s actions just doesn‘t mesh as well as it needed to and there is SO little on Holmes, compared to the fair. Reads more like a history than true crime, overall. Still an interesting read, just not what I‘d hoped it would be ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was short and tough. Wiesel‘s writing is brutal and honest—there are no attempts to find beauty or alleviate the suffering from these camps. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #booked2019 #nightorientedtitle

The writing was spectacular. Carrie writes about searching for home and belonging in a way that sung to my soul. While I didn‘t enjoy this as much as Red Queen (because I love princess in disguise stories), this story was still really enjoyable and a fast read. For a series, the story arc was neatly resolved, with enough of a cliffhanger to want to pick up the next book. While I‘m eager to see where the story goes in the next installment, I hope it stops veering into romanticizing abusive relationships/abusers.

This wasn‘t my favorite King—though that might be because the topic (exploration of horror from the 1950s-1980s) was before my time. I haven‘t read or watched much horror from that genre, so while I always love hearing King talk about horror and why we are so pulled to it, I could appreciate his analysis as much as a contemporary audience did. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

While I liked the premise of this a lot, the main character was far too whiney and felt too two-dimensional. I am an introvert and it turns out that when you get married, you don‘t get much alone time. My hubby goes to work after me and is home before me. And I love him so so much, but your girl needs some quiet. So I‘m trying a new habit: early morning reading time. The 5 am wake up call isn‘t great, but I think starting my day like this will make a difference.
Introverts—how do you get your quiet time in?

This didn‘t work for me. While the numerous inaccuracies give me pause (see the NYT review for this book), I had the biggest problem with Morris‘s writing. You know how they say in writing to show, not tell? Morris TOLD a story of the Holocaust. She didn‘t show it. This caused the story to come across as shallow, which is a shame. #unpopularopinion ⭐️⭐️

I like a good, twisty thriller and this tries really hard to be that. The “main twist,” so to speak, was easy to guess. As the author tried to turn that twist on its head, it just got confusing and lost any power it might have had. The last 50 pages were an immense disappointment. The book was at a quiet simmer and tried to reach a rolling boil right at the end. It didn‘t. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pickpick

A collection of loosely connected stories, centered around a condo building in Bangkok, Thailand. The book is interested in the idea that places bear witness to us and our lives. It was tricky to keep some characters straight and a bit tough to get into at the beginning. Once I got in the rhythm of the writing it got a bit easier. A fitting book to read on a gray, almost rainy, day. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1️⃣ Cherries or strawberries!!
2️⃣ THE ROAD TO JONESTOWN by Jeff Guinn. A tough read, but really, really good.
3️⃣ See tagged book! It‘s technically a manga series, but I think, in terms of straight genre and not necessarily style, it‘s the same as a graphic novel, yes?
4️⃣ In a slightly better paying job, out of debt, and talking about having a baby. 😊

My department moved to a new office this week (and is much closer to me YAY) but now my cube is directly in front of my boss‘s office. I‘m being discreet with my down-time reading this week to feel it out, so focusing on these lovelies + the tagged book today.

This was perfect and I laughed so hard. Sarah Anderson is a new favorite. #booked2019 #comicorgraphicnovel

monalyisha I actually had this exact moment when I was in elementary school, playing Clue with a friend. I accused “Col-o-nel” Mustard & she laughed at me. A lot. 🙈 2mo

Blahhhhh. This was not good. I think we are supposed to think that the main character‘s evil actions are justified because it‘s in search for revenge and he just needed to learn to stand up for himself. But that‘s not how life work and he‘s actually a disgusting boy. Easy to read, but not worth the time. #readharder2019 #selfpubbed #litrpg #popsugarreadingchallenge
