I love this chapter! I understand why Hermione things they should turn it in, it's the responsible thing to do with Black on the loose, but I'm so glad he doesn't. It's one of the most amazing magical artifacts from the books. How did they get the map to identify new people on it? How does it know where everyone is, especially when they've never come into contact with it? So cool. 🌻 #potteraday

Finally caught back up! ✨ #potteraday

It's crazy to me that Black can affect a painting. The otherworldliness of it scared me extra bad the first time I read this. I kept thinking: What can't he do?

I was SO excited for this movie when it came out! I was just about to turn 13; I remember watching the credits with the parchment floating by thinking: Wow. That's the best thing I've ever seen. Prisoner of Azkaban brings back so many happy memories!

Scochrane26 Me, too! This was the 1st I saw in the theater, but I had a major accident about 2 wks before it came out & had to wait a couple of months. When I was drugged up after the accident, I remember being upset that I wouldn‘t get to see it. My sister took me when I could be out walking again, even though my arm was still messed up. 2d

Reading #potteraday in bed with my boys this morning. I keep getting behind! How are y'all doing? ⚡

Eggbeater I'm managing to keep pace. I look forward to the next chapter every morning. It is hard not to read ahead, but I like it this way. 2d
GingerAntics I got behind Thursday, but got caught up over the weekend. I‘m with @Eggbeater, it‘s hard to not read ahead. It‘s nice having time to digest each chapter before reading the next, though. 2d
Linsy @Eggbeater @GingerAntics You guys are awesome! I get very into when I'm reading and want to read ahead, but when I'm in the middle of another book, I tend to put it off. Wish I could read all day! (edited) 2d
MeganAnn I've been pretty good about keeping up so far. My son started doing this with me so it's fun to discuss each chapter with him once we finish. I like taking the time to consider each chapter before moving on! Before I would race through the story but this makes me slow down and think about it more. 2d

Poor Hagrid. Having Malfoy in your first class shouldn't be allowed. 😞

What do you guys think about Divination? If it's more about having the gift than studying, why teach it? Do you think parts of it can be learned??

TheDaysGoBy I think some of it can be learned like reading tea leaves or tarot cards. But at the same time I think it takes someone with a real talent/gift to be able to expand on what they see. I had two different palm readings before - one guy was amazing and I wondered just how he‘d gotten so much info about me from my palm. The other wasn‘t nearly as successful. 4d
PurpleTulipGirl Maybe it‘s about learning to recognize the gift, and then learning how to nurture it, so you can better use it? 4d
GingerAntics I completely agree with that. No professor should ever have to have Malfoy in their first class, ever, at Hogwarts. I‘m with Hermione. Divination is total BS. (edited) 4d

“If you do not pay me, I will be paid by your heirs.”

This tale fascinates me because it's supposed to be (loosely) based on history. Apparently, “When you're flipping through the town chronicle of Hamelin, you'll find an entry in the year 1384: 'It is 100 years since our children left.'“

So ... did rats bring plague? Was it a Children's Crusade? Emigration? Some even think a dancing plague. Wish we knew. #germany #readingeurope2020 #fairytales

“The Nettle Spinner“ is so creepy!! And sad. While the good people get what they deserve in the end, it ends on a decidedly morose tone. The antagonist succeeds in making their life miserable for years. Sometimes I just want them to knock off the bad guy! #belgium #readingeurope2020 #fairytales

Poor Dudley, I'd almost feel bad about his depiction if he wasn't so awful to Harry. Marge, though, is the absolute worst. One of my favorite scenes in the movie!

GingerAntics 💙🤍💙 the night bus!!! 1w
Eggbeater I do feel kind of bad about all the Dudley fat shaming. If I was an over weight child reading this I think about how it might make me feel. 1w
Linsy @Eggbeater Exactly! It's difficult, as an adult, to read those parts. Dudley is, after all, a kid. And his weight gets compared to his poor character a lot, which are completely separate things. 1w

The moment Harry opens The Monster Book of Monsters is priceless. I'd forgotten it happens so soon! I love his hesitation as he considers just what Hagrid could have sent... It's a great way to remind us of past books/characters while progressing the story. ⚡ #potteraday

Here are some discussion questions for our #potteraday watch-a-long! My answers are in the comments. Hope you had fun watching! I know I did. ✨💀🌿

Linsy 1. I loooove the mandrakes! I'm so glad they're integral to the story line so they had to include Herbology. I wish it was in every movie! My favorite scene in the book though was probably Ginny's valentine to Harry. Pure perfection.
2. I love Alan Rickman!! Severus Snape isn't my favorite character in the books though. For Chamber of Secrets, that has to be Lockhart. And the valentine-carrying dwarfs, of course.
(edited) 2w
Linsy 3. The Burrow!!! I do love how Rowling has us explore each magical place anew by taking us there a different way. Floo powder is the best! The car made me miss the train.
4. Magic outside of school is the most annoying thing, especially given later plot points. The Whomping Willow, however, is right next to the school, when in the third movie it is far away. Not a problem for this movie, I'll admit, but isn't great for series continuity.
2w
Linsy 5. See you at work? Does Lucius work at the Ministry in the movies? Glad they made the barrier brick in the movies; I'm pretty sure I read metal in the book? Do those pixies talk?? Like real words? And what exactly does it mean if they're freshly cocked? Poor Ron. Never noticed his robes were shabbier than his friend‘s. Great attention to detail, though. 2w
See All 21 Comments
Linsy Many people have been dismissive of the child actors in this series, but I think Dan Radcliffe got it spot on when he said “I bet Dumbledore saw fright through you“ at the end. He followed it up with this knowing smile. It was excellent!!! 2w
Eggbeater I like the spider scene in the movie, but I just like spiders. The polyjuice potion scene is my favorite in the book. 1w
Eggbeater 2. Snape is probably my favorite character in the movie and Dobby is my favorite character in the book. The Dobby of my imagination is just better. 1w
Eggbeater 3. Knockturn Alley. I like the dark, creepy stuff in the movie. 1w
Eggbeater 4/ 5. The humor doesn't translate as well from the book to the movie. For instance, I noticed they cut out the Deathday Party altogether. That chapter really adds a lot of humor to the story what with the headless hunt and the rotten food. The book wins hands down. 1w
Linsy @Eggbeater If you like spiders, then this is the perfect book/movie for you! Polyjuice Potion scene is great; I love the detail in the book. Do you like/dislike its depiction in the movie?? 1w
Linsy @Eggbeater Understood! And he has more scenes, especially in the later books. Alan Rickman though ... perfect Snape! Even a better fit, I think, than Kenneth Branagh as Lockhart, and he does an excellent job. 1w
Linsy @Eggbeater They did do an excellent job with the mood of that place. I freak out for Harry every time! (That was, incidentally, one of my favorite parts of the Wizarding World in person. Borgin and Burkes was so perfectly creepy.) 1w
Linsy @Eggbeater Agreed. I know they couldn't put everything into the movie, but by focusing just on the major, serious plot points, I feel like they missed a lot of the humor. They could have had a better mix, so it wasn't verbatim, but maybe felt more like the books. 1w
Eggbeater @Linsy I liked the polyjuice scene in the movie a lot, it just couldn't compare to the book. The descriptions of Crabb and Goyle are hilarious in the book. 1w
janeycanuck My absolute favourite part of the movie is when Ron & Harry are Crabbe & Goyle and Malfoy says “I didn‘t know you could read.” It was an ad-lib line and I love it! I also love all the parts with Lockhart. IMHO, he‘s better in the movie than the book but that‘s the only thing. 1w
janeycanuck For the book, I think the early part at the Burrow is maybe my fav? And I love Mrs Weasley, I wish she was in the movies more. The Burrow is gorgeous in the movie but I think Diagon Alley and Hargrid‘s hut are top of the list for me. But all the sets in these movies are incredible. I don‘t know how they didn‘t get any awards for set design. 1w
janeycanuck This is, by far, my least favourite of the books and the movies - entirely due to the spiders. I HATE them. @Eggbeater, I‘m happy they make at least someone happy! 1w
janeycanuck @Linsy the magic out of school is so inconsistent. I mean, I guess I understand that they can‘t tell in a public place if an underage kid is doing magic - and it‘s up to parents to enforce at home. But Hermione is a muggle and she talks about doing simple spells over summer. 1w
janeycanuck @Eggbeater so true - Rowling has a very dry, British sense of humour and that comes through in the books but not so much in the movies. I wonder if it‘s because not everyone gets that British humour and these were really made knowing it would be seen worldwide? 1w
janeycanuck @Linsy the casting of all the adults in all the movies is incredible. Maggie Smith‘s McGonagall and Alan Rickman‘s Snape are highlights across the entire series. I could watch the two of them all day. 1w
Eggbeater @janeycanuck You have a good point. I'm from the US and only some of us seem to get/ like British comedy here. It's my favorite! 1w
janeycanuck @Eggbeater Same. We need a dry British humour edition! 1w

I'm behind! Got a bit distracted with other reading, and at the climax of all places. But I'm back just in time though!

Tom Riddle is super creepy here. He always underestimates Dumbledore though. Needs to learn from that.

“Riddle began to laugh ... 'This is what Dumbledore sends his defender! A songbird and an old hat! Do you feel brave, Harry Potter? Do you feel safe now?'“

Myrtle blushes silver! Love that detail. #potteraday

Linsy Could Ginny be part Horcrux? If a horcrux pumped part of itself into her? How do we know she's clean of Riddle? Would destroying the diary really destroy any remnants in her? Or is she like Harry now?? (edited) 2w
Scochrane26 @linsy I could be wrong, but I think Voldemort himself has to create the horcrux. 2w

Cornelius Fudge! His name always makes me hungry. #potteraday

“Neville Longbottom had been sent letters from all the witches and wizards in his family, all giving him different advice on what to choose.“

It's a small detail, but I liked the reference to Neville's extended family. You get the impression that they're ashamed of him in parts, but they clearly all care. Also, there's something about a Wizarding extended family that sounds wonderful.

GingerAntics I was thinking that, too. lol Neville is loved. 2w

What a way to end a chapter! But poor Ginny. Harry really did struggle hard to get away from that Valentine. 💕 #potteraday

Linsy Spoiler Alert!!! This may be my favorite foreshadowing moment of the series: "Maybe he murdered Myrtle; that would‘ve done everyone a favor. . . ." 3w

Poor Hermione! And she did all the hard parts so well.

Couldn't they have at least figured out where Slytherin common room was beforehand? Fifteen minutes is a lot of time to waste when you only have an hour. Harry does have an invisibility cloak.

#potteraday

Enchanted_Bibliophile ?? But then there wouldn't be enough tension... And prefect "Peter"? can't be discovered lurking around ... Remember why his there in the first palce? 3w
Linsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile Ha ha, too true! 😹 Isn't he there to sneak around with his girlfriend? Is that the Ravenclaw they ask for help on the way down?? 3w
Enchanted_Bibliophile Jip that's it. Apparently Ravenclaw's common room is close to Slytherin's. 3w

Clare-Dragonfly @Enchanted_Bibliophile It‘s not, though. 🤔 It‘s another tower like Gryffindor‘s. Maybe they were down there so no one in their own Houses would see them? 3w
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Clare-Dragonfly O, ye that make sense. I knew it was in a tower, just thought the tower might be on the same side of the castle as Slytherin's dungeon 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @Enchanted_Bibliophile That‘s a good point. Maybe it is. 3w
Linsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile @Clare-Dragonfly Good points. That just makes me think it even more absurd they didn't try to go exploring in the first place. I mean, if a Gryffindor and Ravenclaw -- who live in towers -- could be seen down there... but maybe I'm just quibbling. (edited) 3w

My January wrap-up! Two of these were audiobooks, one graphic novel, two print and three e-books. My favorite was probably Truly Devious, with Such a Fun Age as a close second! (Sorcerer's Stone is, of course, a perennial fav.) 💙

Bookzombie I love your wrap-up art! (edited) 3w

Catching up from yesterday! Poor Harry, he really can't catch a break. Hufflepuffs don't look too great in this chapter.

I love the scene with Goyle's Swelling Solution exploding. I completely forgot about this. It would be an amazing fan video!! I want to see Draco's nose swelling so big he can't hold his head up so badly.

And a Blood-Suckin' Bugbear? I don't remember that from Fantastic Beasts. I want details, and drawings!

“It's got bits of Slytherin in it? You've got to be joking.“ Love Ron! 😂

Another action-packed chapter! I'm charmed by Dobby now, but Harry must be so upset. I know I found Dobby super annoying the first time through. Now I can't imagine not loving him! #potteraday

Oh my gosh, I love Sam!!! And Tolkien! I can't believe it took me this long to hop on the LOTR bandwagon. I liked Hobbit a lot -- especially because I got to reminisce with some of the characters in Fellowship -- but I definitely got into this one more. On to book two! (Or three, depending on how you're counting.) Hopefully I'll be caught up to #lotrchapteraday soon! 😁 #fellowshipoftolkien #classicschallenge2020 #mounttbr

GHABI4ROSES Uh oh, you are into another one of my GOALS. Is there a group for this, too? 3w
Daisey Looks like you‘re making great progress and so glad to hear you‘re loving it! 🎉 3w
BennettBookworm Sock twins!! 😄 3w
limada I've never managed to make it through these. Maybe I should try chapter-a-day so that it seems less daunting. 3w
Reviewsbylola I love that you loved it so much. I‘m still convinced Tolkien isn‘t for me but you‘re making me curious. 3w

I never realized that Filch had an actual reason to blame Harry, other than he's just a mean old caretaker and Harry was found at the scene of the crime. He thought Harry killed his cat because he found out he was a squib. Poor Filch.

More thoughts below...spoiler alert for anyone reading for the first time.

#potteraday

Linsy I love how throughout this whole book Rowling points to Ginny without really doing so around the attacks. This time: Ginny is sad because she likes cats. Ron tries to make her feel better...

'“Honestly, we're much better off without [Mrs. Norris].“ Ginny's lip trembled. “Stuff like this doesn't often happen at Hogwarts,“ Ron assured her. “They'll catch the manic who did it and have him out of here in no time.“'

Great pep talk, bro! 😂
3w
Enchanted_Bibliophile The part where Ron tells her the culprit would be caught and expelled ... Het poor heart. She must have been so scared 😢 3w
Linsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile Right??! Now I'm feeling bad for my laugh emoji. It's ironic, but very sad for poor Ginny. 😞 3w

GingerAntics I am so far behind. lol I‘ll get caught up this weekend, hopefully. I got immersed in another book. 3w
Linsy @GingerAntics It happens! I just emerged from Truly Devious obsession, lol. 3w
GingerAntics I was so relieved when it happened to you! lol You have no idea. 3w
Panic70 Earlier in the book she looks pale so Percy bullies her into taking a potion to cure a cold. And Hagrid mentions that she was wandering the grounds. He thought it was to meet up with Harry. 3w
Linsy @GingerAntics Lol, glad I could help! 3w
Linsy @Panic70 @Enchated_Bibliophile You're right! I'd forgotten about that. I'm definitely going to keep at eye on her as things escalate. (edited) 3w
MissAimz_55 On this reread I am keeping an eye out for hints and details from way later books! Like the broken vanishing cabinet. 3w
Linsy @MissAimz_55 Great! I love talking about that stuff. 3w

“They looked back. Dark yawned the archway of the Gates under the mountain-shadow. Faint and far beneath the earth rolled the slow drumbeats: Doom. A thin black smoke trailed out. Nothing else was to be seen; ... Grief at last wholly overcame them, and they wept long.“ 😢

What is Tolkien trying to do, break my heart??? If I wasn't already a bit plot spoiled, I'd be bawling right now!

#lotrchapteraday #fellowshipoftolkien #classicschallenge2020

JazzFeathers It's happened rarely, but l adore reading the book with people who know nothing of the plot 😂😆 3w
