Well, Sunday's #Hyggehour readathon did not go to plan. I was planning on reading The Glass Universe by Dava Sobel. Unfortunately, this little chap had to be rescued from a cat fight. I spent the hour calming him and treating his wounds. Poor boy 🐾

My Heart Is a Chainsaw | Stephen Graham Jones

Isn't it so wonderful when you discover a new author?
I started the tagged last night. My 1st Stephen Graham Jones and I could not put it down. I adore the MC, Jade.
The first thing I did this morning was check out his back catalogue 'cos I want more #horror. 📚📚📚

Any recommendations?

SamAnne The Only Good Indians is my absolute favorite so far. Loved it and the themes it explores! In fact, got me reading other horror novels, a genre I didn‘t dip into much. And really enjoyed Mongrels too. I liked his novella Mapping the Interior. Next up for me is Night of the Mannequins! I liked My heart is a Chainsaw okay, but I‘m not a slasher film aficionado and it didn‘t have the same appeal for me. 3w
AllDebooks @SamAnne I think The Only Goid Indians will be my next choice of his. Thank you for the tips. x 3w
Reggie I really liked his short story collection When All the People Lights Have turned Off and his book, Demon Theory. And I also like his Zombie Bake-Off. 2w

I enjoyed this new one from Stacey Halls almost as much as The Familiars. The story revolves around Angela Burdett-Coutts and the charitable home, Urania cottage, she establishes with a consortium of philanthropists, including Charles Dickens. It is a refuge for fallen women to give them a second chance at a decent life. Worth a read.

#NetgalleyGroup

Thank you to #Netgalley and #Canongate publishers for access to an arc for review.

Within just 100 pages, McMillan paints a very rich and honest account of a family growing up around the miner's strike, in Thatcher's Britain. Alongside a developing relationship with Ryan, Simon floats between jobs, trying to leave his mark on the world as a drag queen.
Cont. ⬇

AllDebooks Cont.
The characters are portrayed so well for such a short book. I found it full of hope, love, loss and in an empowering way, grief. McMillan also lands a political punch at the rise in poverty, the loss of community and camaraderie between the miners. The passages describing the men coming out of their houses early every morning, setting off to the mine in a communal walk were especially profound and moving.

What an extraordinary debut.

TheBookHippie I could not get past the first bit, but I‘m sure it‘s me. Plan to pick it up in a couple weeks and try again. 4w
mcctrish @TheBookHippie I really enjoyed this on audio and zipped through it - I continue to work on Wintering in print which I think I like better but it‘s easy to not pick up 4w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm This one really fizzled out for me and I ended up being rather annoyed with it. I think the author needed to refine the last two chapters more to get her point across. I might pick up her other book because when she was on topic and coherent, I enjoyed myself. I think it was just that the format she went for in this one didn‘t work in her favor. 4w
Librarybelle I loved Wintering, this one not so much. There were a few quotes I liked, but I could not connect with her in this one. 4w

daena I unfortunately need to ask to be removed. My school work is overwhelming right now. Thank you for including me, and hopefully I can jump back in at some point. 4w
rockpools I think a lot of the final conversation about this book took place last week. However, I‘ve just finished. I am glad I read it, I find I am much more aware of ingredients, including those that are so prevalent that you don‘t even think of them as weird (maltodextrin for eg), and am trying to focus on more ‘real‘ food. HOWEVER. Lots. I think he‘s basically arguing for a shift away from the entire capitalist system, and while I don‘t necessarily 4w
rockpools disagree, I‘m not too sure it‘s helpful from where we‘re at.

Actually, that might be my take on most of the book! I don‘t disagree (and it has improved my awareness) but I‘m not too sure how it helps. Worth reading, especially in the context of a group discussion like this.
4w
Bookwormjillk @rockpools that‘s a good way to sum it up 4w
AllDebooks @rockpools that's a perfect summary. I think the whole premise comes down to societal change and that's never going to happen. If we haven't fixed global food poverty by now, we never will. 4w
AllDebooks @daena sorry to hear you're snowed under. Hope to see you back when things calm down x 4w
AllDebooks I'm glad I read it, as it has made me rethink the whole food process. Certainly made me re-evaluate my shopping/eating habits 4w
ElizaMarie @rockpools I agree. I feel like this helped me mostly by being more aware of things. Like you mentioned, “real food“. 4w
ElizaMarie I am glad I read it. I don't think I “learned“ a whole bunch (as most of this stuff was either common sense - prepackaged foods aren't super healthy). I think what frustrates me the most, was I couldn't really help develop a better plan of action after reading (other than a general, more whole/raw foods, more fruits and veggies). I found the most interesting aspect of it was the reminder that packaging claims aren't really that reliable. Bummer. 4w

CatLass007 Hi! Would you please add me to your tag list. I‘m not sure if I will be able to participate in February but I‘ll try. 3w
AllDebooks @CatLass007 Absolutely! Welcome to NaturaLitsy, it is very relaxed, so join in when you can x 3w
CatLass007 Thank you! I‘m having vision issues right now so I‘m only listening to audiobooks. This book is not available in audio format, so I definitely won‘t be joining y‘all in February. I think I‘ll check on the January selection and if it‘s available I might just listen to that. 3w
CatLass007 My Mom loved learning about the weather. She even took a meteorology class in college. I see a couple of books on this list that she probably would have loved. 3w

Mehso-so

An enjoyable depiction of Mary Shelley's teenage life before she met Shelley and at the Italian lakes with Shelley and Byron. I did find parts repetitive at times.

#Midwintersolace

One of my comfort magazines, The Simple Things, has started a new podcast. This is perfect to pick up when #MWS finishes at the weekend. ?

"Episode 1 sees our wellbeing editor Becs Frank and I seeking out crumbs of COMFORT and finding ways to feel better. We‘re talking hot drinks and warm places for cold days, discussing the merits of saunas and which old fashioned remedies really work. There will be time to put the kettle...

AllDebooks Cont. on and pause for a moment with an original short story, read aloud. 1mo

What's your go-to playlist to relax to?

My taste in music is as eclectic as my reading preferences. I do enjoy a bit of Fleet Foxes, James Blake or The XX to unwind to.

#Midwintersolace

As we come into our last week, I was curious to see if #MWS has changed anything for you as we get into 2024.
❄️ Have you adopted any new habits or mindset?
❄️ Have you enjoyed the event?
❄️ Would you be interested in future solace events?
❄️ Would you want to stay on/join the #Naturalitsy taglist?

I've drawn up plans for the rest of the year and will be sharing them next week.

@TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit @jenniferw88

TheBookHippie ♥️ honestly saved my ass this season♥️ 1mo
TheBookHippie In all honestly the pacing -no games no points- focus on hygee and the solstice and Yule … Sunday night hour and the slowing and staying in the beauty of nature for December and endless January was a gift. The no competition and no games aspect was such a relief. The focus of inward and hygee and natural is just a gift. 1mo
TheBookHippie I loved the nature cards!!! Loved! 1mo

TheBookHippie I‘m keeping Sunday nights and celebrating more intentionally the seasons. Especially winter. 1mo
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie 🤣😍❄️🩵❄️ Love this so much. Goal accomplished for 1 anyways. ✔️ Thank you x 1mo
IndoorDame I would definitely be interested in future solace events. This was a huge help in getting me through the winter! All the reminders to be intentional and focus on mood, ritual, hygge and community were so helpful but the Sunday nights and the card swap were my favorite as well. 1mo

Are you enjoying this? Any thoughts on this week's chapters? 🤔

@TheBookHippie @chrissyreadit @jenniferw88

TheBookHippie Just started it due to life happenings but I am really enjoying first bit. I‘ll catch up! 😂♥️ 1mo
Librarybelle I‘m reading through it right now! I like that I found her mention of “enchantment” in this section - a good connection to the title! 1mo
See All 9 Comments
mcctrish I listened to this, finished it a week or so ago, one part that made me gasp out loud was when KM was talking to her son on a outdoor walk about thoughts being like branches and he said every time she spoke to him it was like a branch breaking - I‘m not sure I‘d have been able to come back from that as his mom 1mo
AllDebooks @mcctrish that ia a rough one 😔 1mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish That was heartbreaking! But also a great moment of connection for them. He really did get the point of the nature walk, and she heard that he was growing up and she had to step back and start to reach him on his own terms. 1mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I had mixed feelings about this section. It felt like the bits and bobs didn‘t quite flow the same way through this chapter, so each part felt a bit jarring. However, this was the chapter that I felt I could relate to the most. Her setting aside her love of writing, because of the expectations of others that she couldn‘t possibly make a living doing it, definitely hit home. I think it‘s important for humans of all ages to play and not be ashamed. 1mo

Any thoughts on this week's section? 🤔

See All 25 Comments
TheBookHippie I finished it. Had to be back to library was only 7 day loan. But I did not learn one new thing or like the tone 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😬😵‍💫. Could be just me. Seemed all preachy with no clear path and was quite elitist in what the thought was in what we can actually control. Not everyone has time money or resources even if they wanted to adhere to eliminating types of foods. Not sure why this book rubbed me wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️. 1mo
jenniferw88 @TheBookHippie I didn't enjoy it either, although I am looking at labels more. I only learnt something in part 2 - the non-influence of sugar & exercise! 1mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I agree. He implied that he didn‘t have a moral stance on what others should do and that he understood structural inequality but neither of those things really rang true. He reiterated facts I knew and when I thought about if I could actually make changes in my life based on hearing this all again realized my circumstances don‘t allow me to. Maybe this would have been stronger if he‘d focused more on next steps in public policy. 1mo
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie @jenniferw88 I am definitely taking a different path / using a different lens i think. I‘m enjoying the book and recommending it- i do wonder how we can get out of this without advocacy- to change this. I know i was really dependent on quick meals after getting sick and blamed my weight gain on lack of movement but now wonder how much was the change in my diet too? (too significantly more processed food) 1mo
Chrissyreadit Ultimately I feel like having this reminds me why i feel so frustrated about food and that i‘m not crazy. 1mo
Chrissyreadit @IndoorDame I agree but also wonder if this is a way to identify lobbying efforts and ways to support movement in that direction. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit there is but nothings getting done in this political time. Many FDA things got gutted and have no one watching and many environmental things got cut ..So to try and get them back plus more is a big mountain. 😳😵‍💫 and not high on the list as we don‘t even control our own bodies currently. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit not crazy and the little things do make progress . More water, less processed no fast food, just keep making little simple changes. Low impact exercise, walking, etc. 1mo
BookwormAHN I've also finished it and I have mixed feelings. I agree with how bad processed food but I'm not to sure what to eat now. Also I'm feeling rather defeated on his views of exercising. 1mo
IndoorDame @BookwormAHN most of the current science is trending towards his view that exercise doesn‘t have a significant impact on weight loss, but he really failed to emphasize the other aspects of the research on exercise that show the deep degree of importance it plays in overall health and longevity 1mo
Bookwormjillk I finished too. I thought the information was important, but like a lot of you the delivery rubbed me the wrong way. I always get irritated when someone presents a lot of problems without solutions though. (edited) 1mo
JenReadsAlot @TheBookHippie I felt the same way. Did not enjoy this one. 1mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame walking is so essential as is any movement we can do. It‘s paramount to health. That got missed entirely. 1mo
TheBookHippie @JenReadsAlot it just made me angry 😂😳😬 1mo
Julsmarshall This was my least favorite section. It feels like he is too focused on his own point of view rather than holistically which feels short sighted. 1mo
Bluebird Also my least favorite section. Kinda preachy & not very helpful! I‘m with @Chrissyreadit it just reminded me why I am so frustrated about food (& not crazy) My take aways so far are the same as when I started. Do the best I can to reduce processed foods/eat fresh foods when possible. I disagree with him about weight and exercise.I think exercise is critical to health and weight control. Can‘t change the industry, but can try to make small changes 1mo
PageShifter It's comforting to read your comments. I have not read about these things before, so I liked how this book got me to think more what I am really eating. And got me to understand more what's happening in the backgroung (food industry). But I also got the feeling that this book wasn't offering solutions, and it seems I wasn't the only one thinking that. 1mo
Larkken You could really tell in this section that this started as a podcast. I agree that it was preachy and redundant. I'm with you, @jenniferw88 that it made me start looking at labels again rather than just buying the thing with the "best" health claims, so I guess there's that! 1mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie super infuriating how he only seems to be speaking to people with money/access. I'm still confused what he says the dif is between a food desert and a food swamp, but i know I've lived in a food desert and the struggle is real for people who live closer to ten fast food restaurants than to any grocery store, and he is clearly not speaking to the people without cars or who can't otherwise leave the area. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken Exactly my point. He preaches something that only ppl who have money, privilege and access. 1mo
Larkken Maybe the wrong section to talk about this (I've finished and returned the book already so can't check) but I did find interesting the parts on smell and how additives esp those related to odor is hampering our natural self-selecting abilities. I've always felt really strongly that cravings should tell us something about what we need, and have had that feeling supported during pregnancy, so liked seeing some sort of science behind it. 1mo
