Frankenstein
Frankenstein | Mary Shelly
Victor Frankenstein has an aptitude for science and whilst at university he discovers a secret that allows him to impart life to non-living matter, and so his creation is born. The creature is not quite what Victor expected and so he flees in fear. Desperately alone the creature begs for a mate so as to have someone who wont fear him. Victor reluctantly agrees but, fearing the creature to be evil, he changes his mind after imaging them to breed and create a danger to mankind. The creature decides he must have revenge and Frankenstein is plunged into his very worst nightmare.

The beginning of this book is very slow so I was afraid that I would hate it. But omg I LOVE this book. I somehow managed to relate to it so hard??? If you want to read more classics but struggle with boredom and understanding them, like me, read this!

Halloween at The Theater at the Ace Hotel is back! This year's theme was the 1931 classic, Frankenstein. The LA Opera orchestrated the music as the film played. Of course, my husband and I decided to attend dressed as the Monster and the Bride.

Hadn‘t read this in 20+ years and appreciated it so much more this time around. Not only from having a better understanding of it‘s literary significance than I did as a teen, but also due to the influence of all the Victor roast-posts I‘ve seen around the interwebs over the last few years. Victor really is the WORST, and approaching the novel from that angle made it more fun to read.

SamAnne I reread it a couple years ago while reading Frankissstein which I thought was a hoot. 5mo

For whom do I have sympathy? Dr Frankenstein or his monster? I‘m not sure I would have been sympathetic to the monster but for Dan Steven‘s‘ brilliant rendition of him! I admit to being bored until the monster told his story, then, wow! This is a book worth studying. It reads like it was written in 1818, and I‘d rather it β€œshow” rather than β€œtell.” But there‘s a reason for that I discovered at the end. I‘m so glad I finally read it. ⬇️

CogsOfEncouragement I read the book and also had sympathy for the monster. Shelley did a good job of it. 5mo

Day 23 of #scarathlondailyprompts is story.
I read Frankenstein in 2013.
One thing that struck me was the story within a story (and sometimes) within a story. That makes it the perfect choice for this prompt. I had only seen references to Frankenstein's monster on cartoons, or The Munsters, etc. which all gave me a very incorrect idea of what this tale really is. Glad I read it.

#OnThisDay in 1797 the mother of science fiction, Mary Shelley, was born Mary Godwin in London, England. After running away from home at the age of 16 with the married Percy Shelley, she famously penned Frankenstein at 18 following a challenge from Lord Byron. Published anonymously in 1818, Mary wasn't credited as the author until 1823, and never received royalties for her most famous work. #HistoryGetsLIT

Frankenstein so caught public imagination that it's never been out of print. It has gone through countless editions, become a staple of nineteenth-century horror narratives and more recently has enjoyed a deep relationship with audiences of film and TV, players of computer games and readers of fan fiction.

I‘m a sucker for classics and this book was no exception. The story line was captivating and I loved the characters, especially Victor and Clerval. Clerval was such a loving friend, he didn‘t deserve what happened to him! I also felt bad for Victor, he just wanted to enjoy life and the wonders of science! Overall, the novel was amazing and I loved that it was written through letters. The story within a story was genius.

Finished! A story within a story with in a story. Definitely not at all what I was expecting.

To be honest, I loved the concept and the depth of the story but found myself either confused or missing details over and over. Im not even sure what happened at the end... πŸ˜ͺ😬

I listened to it on audiobook but this classic deserves to be held physically and cherished. I'll have to read it again!

Solid 3.5 stars because I missed a lot of detail.

Ruthiella I think the ending was a little open ended-the monster sails off on a ice floe - maybe he survives? Room for a sequel...probably someone has already written it! 10mo
LoverOfLearning @Ruthiella yeah it was so so hard to focus on the audiobook at times. I had to relisten to the ending like 3 times and eventually I gave up. I more or less the gist of it. HA And yeah I'm sure someone has! 10mo
