Time Is a Mother | Ocean Vuong

I am not a poetry reader. That's on me, definitely not Ocean Vuong. There were some lines I thought were quite lovely.

I'm winning even / if it just looks like / my fingers are shaking

Nobody's free without breaking open

I was made to die but I'm here to stay

It seems to me like a roller coaster. The speaker moves from gutwrenching despair to the heights of victory. Maybe. #QueerBC @PuddleJumper
There's death. Then dancing.

TheBookHippie I really liked this book. 1d

This is the first discussion post for #QueerBC

This is for both Alan Hollinghurst and Ocean Vuong

I've put up a few questions that you can answer or you can just comment with your thoughts about the book you read

As a reminder May‘s author will be Neon Yang

willaful 1. I read Time is a Mother by Ocean Vuong, a book of poetry.

2. A primary theme was grief, and still finding joy in life despite grief. The style of poetry was sometimes too oblique for me, but the simpler poems were powerful.

3. Yes, though primarily to poetry fans. I tried introducing my mom to it (she's dealing with a lot of grief) and she got even less than me. 😂

4. “Because this body is my last address.“ from “reasons for staying.“

Zuhkeeyah 1) Time is a Mother by Ocean Vuong 2) He wrote of grief and loss. My two favorites were “Dear T” and “Künstlerroman”. Very different styles (one verse the other story-ish) 3) Yes 4) “If words, as they claimed, had no weight in our world, why did we keep sinking” from Almost Human (edited) 3d
lil1inblue I haven't finished either yet, but I am reading The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst and Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong. I like The Line of Beauty so far, but I also feel like I'm missing the point. I'm hoping it all makes sense by the end. Night Sky is excellent, but I'm not as far along. 2d

Pickpick

A powerful collection of poetry following Vuong‘s journey of grief after the loss of his mother.

Incisive and sometimes brutal, this is a wonderful collection. But for me, Dear Rose was the strongest poem, by far, and actually brought me to tears & ended up with me texting my mother to let her know I love her. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

This is a section from “Reasons for Staying,“ my favorite poem from this. You can read the full poem here: https://griffinpoetryprize.com/poem/reasons-for-staying-vuong/

I definitely didn't get all of these poems, but even the bits and pieces I did were powerful and evocative.

I‘m at 60%, one of the characters is trying to pry into the big mysterious scandal at the center of the book, and I‘ve realized that I just don‘t care about whatever it is or whoever is involved. 😅 I‘m just bored.

Which is a pity because Hollinghurst is excellent at grounding his stories in a time and place. I think I‘ll have to try a different book by him at another time.

Really interested in the main character but I couldn't take the awfulness of the situation.

General consensus was to have one author in May and the other in June.

So May‘s #QueerBC author will be Neon Yang!

What do you think you'll read? If you've got any recommendations, drop them in the comments

Don't forget April we're reading Alan Hollinghurst and poetry by Ocean Vuong

willaful I didn't get into The Black Tides of Heaven so I'm thinking I'll start with a short story and see how that goes. 2w
PuddleJumper @TheBookHippie Hope they keep them! 2w
PuddleJumper @willaful I'd only heard of The Black Tides of Heaven and the new one Brighter than Scale, Swifter than Flame 2w
willaful @TheBookHippie I've been doing that too, will go check my library out now. It's nice to check out physical books and not have to worry about wasting an expensive ebook loan! 2w
Jari-chan I just got a recommendation for Brighter Than Scale today - perfect! 2w
BookmarkTavern Black Tides of Heaven is very good! And I‘ve got an ARC of Brighter than Scale! 2w
PuddleJumper @BookmarkTavern Awesome! Both books look interesting 2w
PuddleJumper @Jari-chan Haha that's good timing 2w
Kenyazero Nice! I read Black Tides of Heaven a while ago and remember liking it. I‘m excited to see what else my library has! 2w
flying_monkeys My library doesn't have any of their books, so I'll have to go the short story route. I'll read “Glass Lights“ since I own a copy of The Djinn Falls In Love & Other Stories. 2w

There's a tie between Neon Yang and Zen Cho for May's #QueerBC author

This is the first time this has happened, so we can have a tie breaker or have both authors

Let me know what you would prefer

rwmg I'd have one of the two authors for May and one for June 2w
PuddleJumper @rwmg That is also an option 2w

These poems really unsettled me. The stories Vuong tells here hit me deep and more than once I could relate to the texts. What an impressive writer he is. His voice vibrates and resonates with my soul. Deeply.
