Marked | Sue Tingey

Sue Tingey‘s debut romantasy novel (the first in a trilogy) was sadly not my cup of tea. Hampered by a passive main character who repeatedly makes stupid decisions for the purposes of advancing the plot, an insipid potential love triangle (the main love interest being grotesquely manipulative) and a lazy, cod medieval demon world that offers little new. At best it was dull and at worst it really irritated me such that I will not be reading on.

The true appeal of the book was learning about the establishments where the stories take place and the vibe of the city. He also does a thorough job of fact-checking and debunking a number of the Quarter‘s myths and legends to include Madame LaLaurie, Marie Laveau, and the Laffite brothers. Most of the ghost stories are pretty mild. I enjoyed this though as it gives great descriptions of the city. I even added a few stops during my time there!

3✨ Trigger warnings for suicide and bullying. Marjorie is back with Wendell and we meet Mr Duncan‘s daughter. She doesn‘t really fit in with the popular crowd that Marjorie is hanging out with. She is interested in photography and ghosts. Marjorie befriends her, but only when the popular kids aren‘t around. This was deeply emotional and can show how you can help someone facing deep depression by the end.

BethM That is a very fun cover for such a serious story. 1w

4.3⭐️ I went into this book thinking I was reading a horror, and I was wrong. This was the July #FableBookClub horror pick for #RoaringWolfFrightNight. Though it didn‘t live up to the horror I was looking for, this was one of the best paranormal cozy mysteries I‘ve ever read. I look forward to continuing the series, slowly because it‘s very big. Lesson learned in picking a horror book, though… always check the genre!

4✨ This was the cozy ghost story I‘ve been looking for! I‘m so excited that I got to read this books and start this series. Marlow at first doesn‘t know he is a ghost until Danielle, who can see spirits, lets him know. She inherited the house which was passed down from Marlow in a very unconventional way. They work together to solve the mystery of how he actually died, and what happened to the people that were closest to him. #FableBR

I enjoy her characters, especially the animals. Mira is finally going to get to move into her new home, but finds the realtor dead in the kitchen. The next day someone starts a fire and the catastrophes continue. Jay and Aeri step in to help, but Mira believes the local police are worthless.

Ughhhh. This had so much potential. Talitha Velkwood still reeling from a tragic event 20 yrs ago gets an offer to go back to her haunted street she left. That piece of haunted street that exists in its own reality separate from our own. One only Talitha and 2 other girls can enter. It could have used more characterization, I‘m not a fan of going back and forth between places where nothing really happens or gets moved forward. I did like her 👇🏼

Reggie writing ability to write about and around something without giving it away but that got old real quick. I would like a lesbian to tell me what they think about this book. Loved the ending but didn‘t enjoy the journey. Mehhh 1mo
sarahbarnes This definitely sounds intriguing. Sorry it sounds like it fell short for you. 1mo
Reggie @sarahbarnes AND it won the Bram Stoker award for best novel this year!!! thank you, Sarah. 1mo

LeahBergen Oh, too bad! 1mo
Suet624 It‘s even more disappointing considering it won the award for this year. 1mo
Reggie @LeahBergen it probably didn‘t help that I listened on audio and the girl reading it was fully embodying the character sounding depressed and on Xanax or something. And it was a bright sunshine day and I‘m on vacation. But rainy day Reggie still would have thought meh. lol 1mo
Reggie @Suet624 sometimes Denzel wins the Oscar when you want it to go to Russel and sometimes Russell wins the Oscar‘s when you want it to go to Denzel. 🤷🏽‍♂️ 1mo
Centique I love your comment about what rainy day Reggie would have thought 😝 1mo

stretchkev Yeah this was something I gave up on, thought maybe too early. Now i don't feel so bad.

The Bram Stocker has been kind of meh this year.

Reggie @stretchkev you made the right choice. It was a soft sapphic love story dressed up in a weak, weak, story. I haven‘t read the rest of the nominees. But my hopes aren‘t high after this. 1mo
