The Shepherd's Crown | Terry Pratchett
post image

From today's Discworld Emporium's Newsletter:

THE SHEPHERD'S CROWN TURNED 10!
The final Discworld book is now a decade old. All these years later, the understandable reluctance to read it can be felt as strongly now as it did that dreadful year when Terry died, and the Shepherd's Crown was published. For many fans it has remained an unread treasure in order to hold back the end and keep the turtle moving.⬇️

#Discworld #OokBOokClub

julesG With that in mind, Rob Wilkins had a few words to mark the anniversary and encourage the bravery required to finish the final chapter . . .⬇️ 1d
julesG "It‘s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherd‘s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.⬇️ 1d
julesG But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones you‘ve already enjoyed and including ⬇️ 1d

julesG The Shepherd‘s Crown.
So the greatest way to honour Terry‘s legacy is to pull that book you‘ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy."

Pickpick

This entry in the Watch series satirizes war and is notable for its development of Sam Vimes, one of Discworld's best characters. I also enjoyed the presence of the Dis-organizer, the annoying personal organizer powered by an imp.

kwmg40 This story felt pretty dark for a Discworld novel, even if it did contain some very funny scenes. Two aspects that I liked very much: the continuing character development of Vimes and the hilarious and intriguing Dis-organiser. 2w

julesG @kwmg40 The Dis-Organiser was hilarious indeed. 2w
julesG Yes, the novel was darker than what we've seen so far, but it can't all be sunshine and rainbows. Not even on Discworld. I think Pratchett used the Watch novels deliberately to show the darker side of life. 2w
willaful I think this was one of his more ambitious books and it's not entirely successful. But it's full of fantastic gut-punch scenes, as well as laughs. 1w
julesG @willaful There's a lot packed into the story. This time round I noticed a lot of small things connected to history (wars, border disputes, fishing rights squabbles,...) that I didn't notice upon my first read or didn't know about back then, which make more sense to me and made the novel feel less 'unsuccessfully ambitious'. 1w

“He ought to stay here, and do the best he could.

But . . . history was full of the bones of good men who'd followed bad orders in the hope that they could soften the blow. Oh, yes, there were worse things they could do, but most of them began right where they started following bad orders.”

Good morning, everyone! The moment you have all been waiting for!! Our official #BookSpin number is ONE! Our official #DoubleSpin number is THIRTEEN!! I have thoroughly enjoyed looking at everyone‘s lists & am really looking forward to seeing your reviews!!

My next post will be the #BookSpinBingo card. I am NOT tagging anyone on that post!! If you want to bingo, please just check my profile for the card. This saves me having to double tag ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont‘d) everyone/keep track of who wants to bingo and who doesn‘t!!

I use the same tag list for the entire year, so if you would like to be added or removed, please just let me know. It takes me a while to tag everyone (there are a lot of you!!!) so I will add “FINISHED” to the last tag batch so you know whether or not I missed you. If I did, it was completely inadvertent. Sometimes I just spell someone‘s username wrong. ⬇

willaful My bookspin is a book by Dorothy Bryant (probably Miss Giardino, so I can return it to my mom) and doublespin is Tom Lake, which I've really been wanting to get to! I hope I'll enjoy it as much as others here have. 2w
BarbaraJean The BookSpin fates have done it again! For the past 3-4 months, the spins have landed on a book I was going to read anyway + one I needed a little push to read. This month, BookSpin is Jingo for #OokBOokClub and DoubleSpin (tagged) is a “stretch goals” book that I threw on the list for motivation to maybe read it for my church‘s book group! 2w
vlwelser I totally forgot this was happening today. Signs point to a really shitty day at work 2w
Prairiegirl_reading I didn‘t realize today was the second. I think it‘s Monday. I definitely don‘t think it‘s September so this was a happy surprise!
