Robotswithpersonality
Wyrd Sisters | Terry Pratchett

Pickpick

Felt like it had harder edges this time 'round. It's certainly more entertaining on reread, knowing the ultimate tack the tale takes, seeing the winks to the reader throughout the story, but I think maybe my love for the Vimes books makes it harder for me to love the Witch ones.
With a great deal of veracity, Magrat, Ogg and Weatherwax are ultimately three women respected in their community for how they have helped out, now having to encounter 1/

Robotswithpersonality 2/? new forms of superstition, madness, power-hunger and cruelty.
Pratchett ensures they are resilient and flawed, and the whole book made me feel like I was waiting for things to not be worse.
The CIty Watch books encounter many a dark side of humanity (and other fantasy races) but I feel like the learnings happen along the journey, and you're watching Vimes' rocky road to improving himself and the Watch throughout the plot.

Robotswithpersonality 3/? Here, I'm not sure the witches are markedly different from start to finish - and maybe that speaks to them being in a better state than Vimes started out in - but I guess if my funny fantasy is populated with flawed fellows, I'd like to believe there's going to be resolution, acceptance, change. Maybe in the character of the Fool? Perhaps it's where the story ends - in the grand scheme of the Witch books, especially if you add on Tiffany 5d
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Aching, there is certainly the full hero's journey. I have fuzzy fond memories of the next book in this particular series, so we'll see if I feel different about these characters once I reread Witches Abroad.
P.S. I had completely forgotten the standing stone shenanigans, and the snippets of Hamlet references, which for someone who's never read Macbeth, still makes this story an enjoyable nod to Shakespeare

julesG Just imagine reading this parallel to Macbeth (and Hamlet). I love your reviews!!! You always have such insightful comments about the books you've read. 5d
Robotswithpersonality @JulesG Thank you! ♥️ Hopefully the insight improves with any book I'm rereading. 😅 I really should put Macbeth on the ol' TBR mountain, though I'll miss not having several different high school English teachers explain it to me like I had with Hamlet (the only Shakespeare play I read in two separate English classes! I gather not the typical scholastic experience...🤷🏼‍♂️) 5d
julesG I had to read a lot of German plays, books and poetry in school. The few non-German exceptions (in translation, obviously) stuck out. Especially Macbeth, due to reading it while coincidentally reading Wyrd Sisters. You should give it a try, maybe get some study notes to read alongside the play? 5d
Robotswithpersonality @JulesG A plan for the next time I reread it! 3d

kwmg40 I enjoyed this one very much. I'd read it several years ago, but liked it even more on reread, mostly because I appreciated the return of Gaspode after having read Moving Pictures since. 1w
julesG Has anyone read the short story? 1w

BarbaraJean Somehow I missed the tag for this yesterday! And I actually finished this one on time! 😆 I loved getting to know the Watch characters better, especially Vimes, Carrot, Detritus, and Angua. And I found so much of it uncannily relevant to current events in the USA. I just read the (very!) short story (on L-Space). I love that Carrot interviews Death as a witness! 1w
julesG @BarbaraJean Tagging so many at once is wonky sometimes. Yes, it's a short short story, but I liked it. I even attempted reading it in different languages. 1w
willaful @julesG I read it but I don't really remember anything other than that I enjoyed it. Oh, Barbara reminded me about the interview with Death, that was hilarious! (edited) 3d
julesG @willaful 😁 that's like me remembering Men at Arms has Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomics, his wedding and him not leaving the Watch after all. There's Carrot's first romantic encounter; and Vetinari still running the city at the end. And I could probably quote some iconic lines, both the funny and the strikingly apt ones about society/weapons/... 3d

Mehso-so

This one was difficult to get into due to current events. Pratchett takes a hard stab at racism and prejudice, and what happens when two factions fight over a resource and a plan on making siege weapons. Although Pratchett's intent was good in satirizing both sides, the Middle Eastern presenting people feel more like stereotypical caricatures than actual human beings. I found their portrayal to be very racist, although I am aware it's accidental.

Doppoetry There is a very fine line between poking fun of those in power and making fun and mocking a minority group.

The tonal shift in this book was a bit jarring, but I think it fit for what the author was going for.

Overall, I think there was probably a better way to go about portraying people of color who are the major focus of the story with more empathy. But aside from that he did what he set out to do.
