I finished this a couple weeks ago. Bought it today... not the usual order for me lol. Actually I had wanted to read this for a long time - an acclaimed fantasy that I hadn't read before - and I thought I owned it. Turns out I had Darkspell (book 2), oops. So I read this one from the library, and really liked it. Always a good sign when I want my own copy of one I read from the library.

Here's my book stack - all books for challenges except Heart Choice. 10 of them are the last books I need for #sfftbrchallenge, and the right hand stack is for #192019challenge

I'm not saying I matched my mug to my book on purpose this morning but... 💙

I'm loving this book not only in terms of the story, but the tactile experience of reading it. Maybe it's cause I've read a string of ebooks and old paperbacks recently, but this book is gorgeous and easy to read. The font, spacing, binding... loving it. Three cheers to some designers somewhere!

I haven't heard great things of this book, so I'm not going in with high expectations. Giving it a try since I got it for free.

Gotta admit though, that's a great opening paragraph. "His marvelous hindsight" ?? a great blend of epic with snark. On the other hand, I'm not much further now and the death toll is already in the 100s... which suggests I'm probably not the audience for this book. We'll see what happens...

llwheeler Nothing against action scenes, I just need to know why I care about the people / situation and I usually find when it's right at the start, I don't care enough yet. 2w
esurient I read the core trilogy ages ago and admired the inventive gore, but I thought the plots grew repetative and eventually lost my interest. I usually only recommend it for fans of military fiction. 2w
llwheeler @esurient Which is definitely not my sub-genre, so strengthens my feeling I'm not the right audience for this one. But good to read outside of my preferences sometimes, so I'll still see how it goes 2w

Tagged book is my current read, which I just accidentally (minorly) spoiled for myself by listening to Writing Excuses podcast. Oops - oh well, it was a good discussion.

A Hellenistic Anthology | Neil Hopkinson

Ever since I finished Circe, I've been thinking about Theocritus' Idyll 11. All the references to pharmakon in Circe reminded me of pharmakon here - there ain't no cure for love - but it's been a while since I read it and the details are foggy.

So going for a re-read now. With my trusty middle Liddell at hand since my Greek is, to be generous, very rusty. If I stop after a few lines, let's chalk it up to this absolutely gorgeous day instead.

TimSpalding Secret rusty-Greek handshake! I no longer attempt Greek poetry myself, so kudos. Hellenistic poetry nearly broke me. Callimachus? Glorious and very hard! 3w
llwheeler @TimSpalding Haha, hello! Thanks! I still attempt poetry but I'm just reading for myself, so I don't force myself to parse every single word as long as I get the jist. So that helps. I think I did read a little of Callimachus in undergrad... I don't have a huge desire to try him again though, not for quite a while at least. 3w
TimSpalding @llwheeler My thing now is to read texts with Greek on one side and Latin on the other. I find one always solves the other, and that way I'm practicing either way. I find reading Greek without help a chore—I'm not in school anymore so it's harder to justify the pain. Also, I don't have the impulse control to read a Loeb without reading too much English :) 3w
llwheeler @TimSpalding That's a great idea! I haven't tried that. Completely agree with you that the pain isn't worth it to read without help. I love Perseus for that, the ability to just click on a word and be like oh, weird aorist, okay, and carry on. 3w
TimSpalding @llwheeler I mostly do it with the NT. But there are early-modern editions of practically every Greek author with facing Latin. People like Jefferson always read their Greek with Latin on the other side. Cheaters. 3w

Apparently sff authors really like Marvell's To His Coy Mistress...

I was thinking of LeGuin's story today, Vaster Than Empires and More Slow. Looked up the poem the title comes from as I couldn't remember it entirely. Hit the line "a fine and private place". Thought, hey that's the title of a Beagle novel I have, I wonder if... yep, sure enough the back cover has a longer quote from the poem.

I ❤️ literary allusions and intertextuality.

Finished this a few days ago and I'm still smiling when I think of it, so it's a completely successful P&P retelling for me. It's also one of the most faithful retellings I've read--so many cut out Mary and/or Kitty and Col. Fitzwilliam. This not only keeps them all but takes the time to show their characters in the Pakistani setting. Of course the Elizabeth/Darcy (Alys/Darsee) arc is key in any P&P story and that worked for me here too. 👇

llwheeler I recommend this if you like Pride and Prejudice retellings or Austen retellings. I'd love to see a movie or miniseries adaptation of this too. 2mo

From the introduction to the Wordsworth classics edition (1996). So interesting to learn! See my previous post for why I am skeptical of their claims to correction. I've also noticed several smaller instances of things I would consider "obvious errors" ("be" instead of "he"), and can't blame it all on the apparently terrible T.C. Newby since I also found an error in the footnotes. I am loving the book so far but maybe not the edition.

mrsmarch Now, is it “erors” in error or should it be “erors [sic]”? 3mo

Well I haven't seen this before! A whole paragraph repeated, but with some periods and italics different. So I wondered if it was an error with my edition (Wordsworth classics, 1996), or an error with the original that the editor of this edition chose to keep for some reason. Turns out the original publishers were terrible typesetters (see my next post), so I still don't know. Maybe both?

Pickpick

Well I am late to the game on this one, so this is not news, but... this is very good. Lived up to the hype for me. I'll be reading the next one, and in audiobook again because narrator Robin Miles was fantastic (also not news, I know).

BarbaraJean You‘re not alone—these have been on my to-read list almost since the first one came out, but I still haven‘t read them! It‘s good to know the audiobooks have a great reader—will have to prioritize these from my long list of “favorites” on Hoopla! 4mo
llwheeler @BarbaraJean Same! The audio is pretty short, about 2.5 hrs so it was great to break up some longer reads I'm in the middle of. Hope you like it when you get to it! 4mo
