The Christmas Lights
The Christmas Lights | Karen Swan
11 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
Set on the scenic fjords of Norway, The Christmas Lights by bestselling author Karen Swan is a moving Christmas tale of love and heartbreak. December 2018, and free-spirited Influencers Bo Loxley and her partner Zac are living a life of wanderlust, travelling the globe and sharing their adventures with their millions of fans. Booked to spend Christmas in the Norwegian fjords, they set up home in a remote farm owned by enigmatic mountain guide Anders and his fierce grandmother Signy. Surrounded by snowy peaks and frozen falls, everything should be perfect. But the camera can lie and with every new post, the perfect life Zac and Bo are portraying is diverging from the truth. Something Bo cant explain is wrong at the very heart of their lives and Anders is the only person wholl listen. June 1936, and fourteen-year old Signy is sent with her sister and village friends to the summer pastures to work as milkmaids, protecting the herd that will sustain the farm through the long, winter months. But miles from home and away from the safety of their families, threat begins to lurk in friendly faces . . . The mountains keep secrets - Signy knows this better than anyone - and as Bos life begins to spiral she is forced, like the old woman before her, to question who is friend and who is foe.

Not my favourite Karen Swan book. The characters all seemed really random and I didn‘t really care for Zac and Bo, the plot line from the past was interesting at times but kind of random. It wasn‘t an enjoyable read like some of her other novels. Just kind of meh.

Started this one today. So far it hasn‘t been too Christmasy but I am intrigued by it.

I was drawn to this by the prospect of a Christmassy book with a historical fiction element to it. It actually doesn‘t have much Christmas in it until near the very end, but I enjoyed it all the same. I learned so much about a country, landscape and history I knew very little about. The main focus is definitely on the modern part, and I‘m not sure the historical was actually needed in the end. Still I‘m glad it was there because it was interesting

BookaholicNatty This looks like a great Christmas read!!! 12mo

Braved the frigid temperatures to go see some Christmas lights!!! 🎄

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I don‘t know where you‘re at, but it looks very cold and very brave! Adorable picture, definitely frame that one! 12mo
Kshakal @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I am in Wisconsin and it is a whole zero degrees!! And I am for sure framing it... she doesn‘t smile in pics all that often but when she does it is like gold! 12mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Kshakal We so rarely print out and frame anymore, but that smile in the middle of all that winter wear is adorable. 12mo

This was a really good read. It jumps from present times with Bo's story to the past as we learn about Signy's life. They're are some really clever twists in this that I didn't see coming. I loved the ending and it finished the story perfectly, exactly how I wanted it to. I loved the time jumps and the setting is incredible. A great read that's more than your typical Christmas story.

Well I didn't beat last month but actually ended up with more hours than I thought and even finished a book. November has definitely been my lowest month for reading, hopefully December will be better.
Thank you for hosting @TheReadingMermaid and @Andrew65
