White Teeth
White Teeth | Zadie Smith
Zadie Smiths dazzling debut caught critics grasping for comparisons and deciding on everyone from Charles Dickens to Salman Rushdie to John Irving and Martin Amis. But the truth is that Zadie Smiths voice is remarkably, fluently, and altogether wonderfully her own.At the center of this invigorating novel are two unlikely friends, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal. Hapless veterans of World War II, Archie and Samad and their families become agents of Englands irrevocable transformation. A second marriage to Clara Bowden, a beautiful, albeit tooth-challenged, Jamaican half his age, quite literally gives Archie a second lease on life, and produces Irie, a knowing child whose personality doesnt quite match her name (Jamaican for no problem). Samads late-in-life arranged marriage (he had to wait for his bride to be born), produces twin sons whose separate paths confound Iqbals every effort to direct them, and a renewed, if selective, submission to his Islamic faith. Set against Londons racial and cultural tapestry, venturing across the former empire and into the past as it barrels toward the future, White Teeth revels in the ecstatic hodgepodge of modern life, flirting with disaster, confounding expectations, and embracing the comedy of daily existence. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Started listening to this. I've noticed that it's more difficult to follow a book like this in audio form than it is with a book like John Grisham that has a simple forward moving plot. 🤔

Has anyone got any good book recommendations for the winter haul? Shouldn't necessarily be mainstream reads, though. Apart from the one already mentioned in the tag.

10/10 on this book so far. “Hysterical realism” is what this style is apparently called and I am glad to have finally found a name for it. The writing is very descriptively dense but still seems to glance off of deep issues (diversity, race, religion) in the perfect way.

If religion is the opiate of the people, tradition is an even more sinister analgesic, simply because it rarely appears sinister. If religion is a tight band, a throbbing vein, and a needle, tradition is a far homelier concoction: poppy seeds ground into tea; a sweet cocoa drink laced with cocaine; the kind of thing your grandmother might have made.

1) I have recommended "Bad Blood" more frequently than any other book this year, but that is mostly because of the field I'm in. I have also recommend the tagged book quite a bit this year.
2) Midsommar. I'm seeing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this Saturday at Alamo Drafthouse.
3) Burger & beer. (Boulevard!)
4) Nine.
5) Will do.

I started White Teeth. It's early days but I'm enjoying it. After the dreadful "Leaving Claude" I guess anything would be a great read, right? ?

vivastory White Teeth is one of my favorites of the year. Enjoy! 7mo
BarbaraBB Harriet really hit you hard didn‘t she 😉? 7mo
See All 12 Comments
Izai.Amorim @BarbaraBB Not Harriet herself but the fact that I can't understand who the author wants to portray here. Herself? 7mo
Aimeesue I loved White Teeth. Much more than On Beauty, tbh. 7mo
BarbaraBB That‘s the question indeed. It will be so interesting discussing this. I do know however that the author wrote erotic novels under a pseudonym called Harriet! 7mo
Izai.Amorim @Aimeesue it's my first one by this author. 7mo
Izai.Amorim @BarbaraBB There are uncountable obnoxious characters in literature and they are important. Normally the author uses them to make a point. I don't get the point in Leaving Claude. Maybe I lack something in my background or education? I read even Marquis de Sade and his perverted characters make somehow sense in the story. Here I'm lost... 7mo
Anna40 I don't remember much of the story of White Teeth. I read it when I was in my early twenties, but I remember that I enjoyed it very much. I tried reading her most recent novel Swing Time a few years ago but couldn't get into the story. 7mo
Anna40 Leaving Claude - I tried to find a copy at the library. I was curious after reading your review, but they don't have any copies of the book and I don't think I would like it either. It's hard to relate to an obnoxious character and that often spoils the entire book for me 7mo
Izai.Amorim @Anna40 I got it here in my last Litsy book exchange. I haven't read any review so I don't have any background information but I guess she's writing about her family. It's intelligent and fun. 7mo
Izai.Amorim @Anna40 I bought it on Amazon because libraries here don't have this kind of book. 7mo

This is the story of two friends and their respective families that cover over three generations. It took me about three weeks to read, because it‘s a dense read, thick in complexity, and funny yet lyrical. This is the type of book that bites back & that‘s not a bad thing.

I'm going to admit it -- I struggled. It started out slow for me, gained momentum and I was super into it, and then it plopped me back down as we plodded through tangents. I got lost somewhere in Zadie's brilliance. Really wanted to adore it as much as I should, but felt like I wanted it to end wayyy sooner than it did. I just don't know if I'm smart enough to fully "get it". Some parts the humor and brilliance came through for me, so pick it is.

Chelsea.Poole #audiobook was nicely done from #Libby. Also found the comparisons to John Irving to be appropriate at times. 9mo

The opening lines of Adele's #RumorHasIt reminds me of one of the relationships in one of my favorite books of the year. In fact, Smith's stunning debut is brimming with unreciprocated love & people who seem to find themselves in relationships for all of the wrong reasons. I can't recommend this one highly enough. It has everything you could ask for from a novel.

This is deliciously, gloriously zany, organized chaos with delightfully hilarious characters. As much as I enjoyed White Teeth, it‘s not a 4 star read or a favorite. Had it been my first experience with Zadie, it would have been. White Teeth is nearly 20 years old and for me, I find that Zadie‘s subsequent novels really don‘t live up to White Teeth. It‘s like all that delightfulness went...somewhere.

ZS is for me one of those writers whose work I want to love but can‘t quite. I found her first essay collection more compelling than any of her novels (The Autograph Man being the only one I‘ve not read); of her fiction, The Embassy of Cambodia stands out to me as by far the most striking. Swing Time remains the only of her novels that somewhat spoke to me. Tell me, if you enjoy Smith‘s writing, what about it moves you? what about it do you love?

This was a wonderful sprawl of a book. I loved the characters, and I loved the various storylines as they were woven together through different perspectives and time periods. It felt a bit like Cutting for Stone, but funnier and with a larger cast of characters. The ending went a little off the rails, but I loved it all the same. Another pick from the never-ending #TBR!

This book focuses on two wartime friends, Bangladeshi Samar Iqbal and Englishman Archie Jones, and their families in London. It centers around Britain‘s relationships with people from formerly colonized countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Major themes are immigration, roots, teeth, chance, race, assimilation and fundamentalism. I found it to be a powerful book with lots of wit and insight. Not to be missed!
