⭐️⭐️

Out the gate, this bored me to tears, but I didn‘t want to bail on my first read of 2026. The mystery could not sustain the glacial pace, but my biggest gripe was the dialogue. It does not convey 1700s which took away historical authenticity for me. The Author‘s Note was really needed at the front, not the end. I could‘ve grabbed a Martha Ballard biography instead. I used to love historical fiction, but it has become my least fave genre.

TheBookHippie Finally someone who agrees with me!!!!! 🙌🏼 1d
britt_brooke @TheBookHippie 😂 You are not alone!! ♥️♥️ 1d

KT1432 I think this is the first time I have seen a negative review of this book lol but I tried to read just the sample and it seemed exactly as you described. 1d
BarbaraBB Bored me to tears, lol! That‘s how I felt about one of my most recent reads 1d
SamAnne Okay thank you. I also really had issues with this book. Everyone around me seemed to love it. I did not. 1d
britt_brooke @KT1432 Seems a very small portion feel this way! 😂 20h
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB I‘m not even trying that one. 🤣 I loved Yellowface, but struggled to get through Babel. The writing was really good, but it dragged on and on. And on. 20h
britt_brooke @SamAnne You, me, and @TheBookHippie are the outliers! 😆♥️ 20h
TheBookHippie @SamAnne right?! No. Just no. 19h
SamAnne @britt_brooke @TheBookHippie I‘ve forgotten many of reasons I hated this book I do remember loathing the stilted writing of the relationship between the main character and her husband. I found it so trite! 15h

Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner.

Jess861 @dabbe Amazing - thank you so much! Do you want me to tag you or anything every two months when I post about the book we are reading? Or is there anything I can do to make it easier for you? Or if your just updating it this one time that works too 🙂 5d
dabbe @Jess861 If you tag me every time, I'll be sure to see it. That would be really helpful! 🩶🤍🩶 5d

I hope everyone who wanted to participate was able to enjoy a nice cozy mystery as we head into winter for the #OhCanada read. This is a light discussion on thoughts about the series and/or author.

A reminder that many read different books in the series so no spoilers please.

Jess861 I enjoyed my first adventure in Three Pines! Not sure I'll read all in the series but I can see myself picking one up every so often if I find myself in the mood for a cozy mystery. 1w

LapReader I‘m almost done with mine. So far not that impressed. 1w
lauraisntwilder We have a long drive "home" to see family for holidays. My husband and I usually listen to audiobooks on the road, typically hardboiled stuff like Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammet, that we both like. At Thanksgiving this year, we listened to Still Life and we did A Fatal Grace at Christmas. I didn't realize these were considered "cozy," but it makes sense. We enjoyed them. (Although we did listen to a Chester Himes on our way back!) 1w
kspenmoll I am behind, so will go into January. Listening to 1w
merelybookish Can you add me to the #ohCanada book tag please! 1w
Ruthiella I read the second book. I‘d read the first a few years ago. I don‘t hate them but I know they aren‘t for me. Somehow I am just not smitten with Three Pines and its residents. But I do appreciate how Canadian they are! Everyone wore a toque! 🇨🇦 1w
Jess861 @LapReader That's fair. I enjoyed Still Life but didn't love it. I don't really read to many mysteries though. 1w
Jess861 @LapReader which one are you reading if you don't mind me asking? 1w
Jess861 @lauraisntwilder I'm not really sure what constitutes 'cozy' lol. I'm not much of a mystery reader myself. 1w
Jess861 @kspenmoll I also posted a day early. Hope you enjoy the book! 1w
Jess861 @merelybookish absolutely, glad to have you join! 1w
Jess861 @Ruthiella I agree, I didn't fall in love with the characters. It is very Canadian!! 1w
PurpleyPumpkin As I read this book earlier this year, I was hoping to get to the second in the series in December. Alas, I did not. But I did want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed SL and found it to be a real page turner. The big reveal wasn‘t as gripping as I thought it would be, but I still loved the book. I‘m planning to continue with the series. 👍🏽 1w
Jess861 @PurpleyPumpkin I didn't guess who did it throughout the read so that was a nice surprise for me when I was reading. 1w
LapReader I‘m reading the grey wolf. Listening to his constant thinking that doesn‘t seem to get him anywhere is starting to drive me nuts. 1w
Jess861 @LapReader While I enjoyed the first book, after reading it, I've wondered how the series has made it to so many books. I enjoyed the first but I can't imagine almost 20 books centered around Three Pines and the Inspector. 1w
Kitta I skipped this time - too much going on and a reading slump in November where I didn‘t open a book meant I had a lot to catch up on. I‘ll join in again soon! 1w
kwmg40 I finished the latest book in the series, The Black Wolf, which I didn't like as much as earlier ones. I love this series because the fictional Three Pines is set where I grew up, and so I enjoy all the references to places I'm familiar with. Not all the books are great but a few have been brilliant. There is a lot of character development and continuing plotlines throughout the series so it's best read in order. 1w
Jess861 @Kitta Of course - welcome to jump in and out anytime :)! 1w
Jess861 @kwmg40 So neat that you grew up in a town like this - seems like such a fun type of town to live in (minus the murders)! 1w
kwmg40 I actually grew up in the suburbs of Montreal but know the Eastern Townships area pretty well, as it is nearby. Penny also uses various areas around Montreal for her settings. It's always fun to encounter restaurants, buildings and other landmarks that I recognize. 1w
Jess861 @kwmg40 Such a neat thing that she uses real establishments in her fictional town. I love when authors do things like that! 1w
