September wasn‘t a good month for my TBR 🙈.
My favourite was definitely #littlefireseverywhere.
I was rather disappointed with the #zadiesmith novel.

Buechersuechtling Fünf Bücher – dabei habe ich die drei, die ich abgebrochen habe, nicht mitgezählt – und acht Hörbücher. Die Bilanz hätte ich mir gar nicht zugetraut, aber sie spiegelt wieder, dass ich ziemlich viel mit dem Auto unterwegs bin. 1y

mdhughes72 I‘ve read this one as well. Both it and Swing Time seemed more meh than White Teeth, though neither is a bad book by any means. 1y

Buechersuechtling I gave it a try because it sounded promising and I was being really curious about the painting Zadie Smith would draw of the contemporary structures of the society that in a wider sense we all live in but I gave in after not quite 100 pages. I could not connect to the story she tells. It was told too slow for me. I had the impression that nothing interesting is happening and that bored me. 🤷🏽‍♀️ After that I didn‘t touch another book by her. 1y

LaLecture @Buechersuechtling Sadly, this is exactly the impression I‘ve got so far (I‘m about 80 pages in). I don‘t usually stop reading books mid-way but I‘m honestly thinking about doing it with this one. I have huge troubles with the style of writing too. 1y

Buechersuechtling @LaLecture 😅 Phew, nice that I‘m not the only one feeling so. You know what❓ In recent years I experienced that there are some books that don‘t work for me in classical reading because they bore me but as an audiobook I really enjoy them. I have the faint idea this could be true for this book, also. 1y

Changing My Mind: Occasional Essays | Zadie Smith

My introduction to Smith's writing, this book blew me away with its clarity and technical perfection. The subjects the essays deal with are often esoteric though and the academic tone often presented an obstacle to getting completely immersed in the book. Still what I read of it makes me want to read her fiction.
