Digital Audiobooks: New Media, Users, and Experiences | Iben Have, Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen
48 posts | 1 to read
Audiobooks are rapidly gaining popularity with widely accessible digital downloading and streaming services. This book engages with the digital form of audiobooks, framing audiobook listening as both a remediation of literature and an everyday activity that creates new reading experiences that can be compared to listening to music or the radio. Have and Stougaard Pedersen challenge the historical notion that audiobook listening is a compensatory activity or a second-rate reading experience, while seeking to establish a dialogue between sound studies and media studies, comparative literature, aesthetics, and sociology.

In an audiobook slump- send help and recs!

Avanders Hmm did you try the Forward collection? Or... that‘s audible only, so that may not work. For non-audible... I can‘t remember which ones I‘ve recommended that you‘ve listened to 😉 But I loooved the audio of the trilogy: 7d
Avanders His voice is so rich. 7d
ljuliel I just looked at your profile to see what type books you like. That‘ll be a tough call for me since we read different things. For YA , there‘s a really good series of 3, the newest one just out a couple weeks ago. By Deborah Wiles. Countdown , Revolution and Anthem. All take place in the 50s-60s. 7d

Chrissyreadit I loved this on audio 7d
Chrissyreadit I also enjoyed 7d
Chrissyreadit I have many I haven‘t listened to yet Dune, Lies of Lock Lamora and Six of Crows - that have good reviews. Also I bet this one would be good on audio (I loved the book) (edited) 7d
rachelm This was a fab cast recording 7d
xicanti Pierce Brown and Sally Green are both fabulous on audio. I also highly recommend CHIME by Franny Billingsley, STARDUST by Neil Gaiman, N.K. Jemisin‘s Broken Earth Trilogy, BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE by Andrea Warner, and any of the Star Wars books (they‘ve got scores and sound effects, and they hire narrators who excel at different voices so the whole thing sounds like a radio play). 6d
sprainedbrain I‘m going to tag a couple I have loved on audio this year. 6d
BethM Thanks everyone! @sprainedbrain The Highland Witch sounds super interesting 6d

I'm now spending a lot of time commuting, so I'm going to give audiobooks another try. I'm not great at taking in info by listening, but I found out the Mercy Thompson series by Briggs is mostly available to me on Overdrive, and I've been wanting to reread those. I'm hoping I'll have more success listening to books this time.

75% of the books I‘ve read this year have been via #audiobook, so it comes as no surprise to me that most of my “Books” apps are audio-oriented. 🤷🏼‍♀️ (Plus, I have multiple library cards and Kindle Unlimited to make sure I have plenty of options.) #24in48

Has anyone else been having issues with #Libby? I know this could be related to my specific library, but a couple of my holds have been deleted with no notice. I thought maybe a new ISBN for the title had been added, but it is strange that it's happened twice now.

Eyelit I have had a few issues, but I‘m assuming it‘s because I access my materials both on Libby on my phone and through overdrive on my kindle. This confusing things 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5mo

My answer is... yes AND no.
Yes because I'm putting in the effort of listening and understanding. No because I'm doing something else while listening, which I couldn't do if I were actually reading!
What do you think about it?
🌙

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I think audio books count - you‘ve had the experience of the book - it shouldn‘t matter if that experience is via the eyes or ears. 9mo
Emilymdxn I think taking in all the words to a book counts whether you listen to it or visually read it. I have accessibility issues with holding physical books, which are mercifully getting a little better after years of not being able to read physically, and some people are never able to read physical books cause of disability, so I know it‘s important to a lot of people for listening to count 9mo
SW-T I think the effort counts. You can‘t “read” a physical book while driving but you can listen. And physical limitations may make listening easier. Whatever format works and is most enjoyable for the reader/listener counts. (edited) 9mo
See All 28 Comments
C.Perone I've never tried audio books because even as a child I had trouble following a story read out loud...unless it was a read-along book and record (dating myself lol). The only thing that bothers me somewhat is when they are included with visually read books in monthly/yearly wrap-up/challenges. Because when I see someone has read 200 books in a year, I'm always like, well damn how did anything else get done? 😂 9mo
SailorMoon @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Emilymdxn @SW-T @C.Perone you are all so right. I've always considered audiobooks in my personal case as "cheating" (not for people who actually have sight-troubles), but yes... you can experience the book either way! I also had sight-troubles, and I remember listening to them in the hospital when I could not read. So thank God for both ways ? 9mo
SailorMoon @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Emilymdxn @SW-T @C.Perone thanks for opening my eyes on the subject 😉💕 9mo
Princess-Kingofkings This is an important question to ponder. I've committed to trying more audiobooks this year but I'm easily distracted when I multitask. I've been trying to listen to Lilac Girls at work today but finally turned it off because I was missing too much. We are searching for a new car and I'm selfishly looking for one with Bluetooth so that I can listen to audiobooks to/from work. 9mo
C.Perone @SailorMoon Thanks for the interesting question 😊 9mo
xicanti Yes. Always. Honestly, it bothers me when people DON'T consider audiobooks reading. As others have pointed out, it can be an ableist issue; most blind people can only read audiobooks, and they make life a lot easier for many people with dyslexia. And even if you don't NEED audiobooks in order to read, they still allow you to experience the story. Not everyone zones out while they multitask. 9mo
Elizabeth2 Yes. I listened to a book I just reviewed on here and in my review I used the words “when I read this one.” I am attempting to consume more audiobooks so that maybe I can hit more of my TBR. I normally can‘t focus on them while I complete other tasks, but I‘m working on it. 9mo
SailorMoon @xicanti there's no need to get so heated up 😰 as I said, and everyone else said, thank God there are audiobooks to let people enjoy a book even when they have troubles reading! And even if they don't have any troubles, it's a matter of taste and habits I guess... there was no judge, we were just pondering the subject! 😉 9mo
SailorMoon @Elizabeth2 I'm trying to do the same!!! I have to drive 2h a day to get to work, so this way I can work better on "reading" my TBR ?? 9mo
madamereadsalot1 I've only recently gotten into audiobooks. It's something that I struggled with at first for the exact same reasons. But then I read an article about how the part of your brain that's in use when reading is the same that's in use when listening to an audiobook. I don't know the validity, but I choose to believe it's true. Working full time and being a single mom has changed my ability to read as much as I used to, so I LOVE the discovery of them 9mo
xicanti It seems my comment came off nastier than I intended it to. I apologize. 9mo
OrangeMooseReads I usually say I read the audio edition 9mo
SailorMoon @xicanti no problem here, I might have misread you 😉 9mo
SailorMoon @OrangeMooseReads seems like a good compromise!!! 9mo
SailorMoon @madamereadsalot1 this is so interesting!!! I'm gonna go with it too, I wanna believe in what you said! 9mo
BlameJennyJane It‘s all about the experience!! My favorite way to experience a book is to flip back and forth between listening and eyeballs experiences. I drive a lot for work and I sit in the tub/bed/chair a lot for relaxation so I absolutely MUST have both! 😁😁😁 9mo
Daisey I completely agree that they count, but I do distinguish between them in my reading stats, as well as usually when I talk about a book/audiobook. Reading and listening are different ways for me to experience a book, and I prefer certain types of books in audio vs. print. Some books do not work for me as audio, yet I read very little nonfiction in print. 9mo
SleepyDragon I think we need a verb other than "read" that can encompass both actual reading and listening. I'm too literal in my definitions to say listening to an audiobook is reading, but you did still experience the book, just as seeing Shakespeare performed is experiencing the play. 9mo
SailorMoon @NeesyBeth my point exactly! When you see Shakespeare performing, you experience the play but you don't say "I read it", more like "I watched the play". So yes, the experience is the same (in many cases even better in audio or live performance!) but the word we use for it must yet be created maybe! The effort count just the same in most cases! 9mo
SailorMoon @BlameJennyJane totally agree! I also flip from one to the other, especially because I drive like 120km a day just to go back and forth from work! It really helps working on my TBR list!!! 9mo
SailorMoon @Daisey same here!!! E.g. the most amazing book I've ever read is Ten Little Indians by Aghata Christie... but the Italian audiobook is way better than the paperbook because it's read by many actors and with such a great interpretation that it makes it even more real!!! In some cases it's like living in the book!!! 9mo
MallenNC For me audiobooks are the same as print. I'm still experiencing and absorbing the story 9mo
SailorMoon @MallenNC I don't assimilate as much with audiobooks as I would do with a paperbook... paperbooks keep me more focused. But I think they are a valid alternative when I feel lazy or just too tired to read! 9mo
MallenNC @SailorMoon It can be a different experience, but I've found I do better with audiobooks of classics that are hard for me to stay focused on if I read the print version. It also helps when my eyes are tired. Good question! 9mo
SailorMoon @MallenNC as for classics, you are totally right! I'm doing the same here! I wanna read them all, but some of them are way too heavy to read and focus... not counting the neverending amount of time one must have to read even just one of them! So audiobooks in between drives work for me!!! Thanks for pondering the answers to the question with me! 9mo

hilded And I heard this on is exceptional on audio: 10mo
ReadingRover This is my favorite audiobook of all time and it‘s hysterical! Everyone I recommend it too loves it. It‘s a great one to start with. 10mo
FreeReadAndWrite @hilded this is good on audio! It‘s neat because he speaks his native language during it & is a great narrator 10mo
inthegreensandblues Narrator Bahni Turpin is great and had read a lot of very popular books. 10mo
inthegreensandblues Davina Porter does a great job with the Outlander series. 10mo
BooknerdsLife The whole series read by Stephen Fry is one of the best!!! 10mo
BooknerdsLife I'm not a big audio books fan but this one read by David Tennant was excellent and I couldn't stop listening 😆 10mo

Interesting Op-Ed in NYTimes today:

Is Listening to a Book the Same Thing as Reading It? https://nyti.ms/2zQorZH?smid=nytcore-ios-share

CouronneDhiver Interesting article! I do both, but I find I take more away from actual reading ... I‘ve always done better with visual information. 11mo
PerksOfBeingABookworm Very cool. I just started with audio. My wife told me I shouldn‘t be able to count audiobooks as part of my overall total-books-read, because I didn‘t actually read them. Wish I had read his article before we had that debate :) 11mo
Birdsong28 I used to think like that but over the last year I have got back into my audiobooks and it has lead me to read when I wouldn't have a chance to i.e walking to work and open up myself to series's that I wouldn't normally read. Also you can get a better sense of the story when it is read to you as certain words or sentences can have different meanings and make the story better. 🤔📚📖 11mo
Slajaunie I am an auditory learner so audiobooks are perfect for me. Granted, nothing beats holding the book in your hands and reading. I just don‘t have a whole lot of time for it. 11mo

Audible just started a new sale. 24 pages of books on sale, most around 5 bucks. If you purchase 4, you get a coupon for 5 bucks, so you‘re getting 2 bargains in one deal.
I need to whittle down my list a bit !

Super tired today! I had a rough night last night, and stayed up too late.

I currently trying to decide if I am going to get rid of Scribd. After talking with their support about all of my books becoming unavailabile after two days, I found out that they limit your account after you read a certain amount. But for something that's supposed to be unlimited, it sucks not to have very many interesting things to pick from because I read too much. 🙁

DGRachel That seems shady. 😠 13mo
InLibrisVeritas @DGRachel Yeah, I'm not happy with it at all. But I figured I could tell others so they don't get caught off guard by it and waste money. 13mo
AnansiGirl That explains everything about scribd suddenness of making books “unavailable.” 😒 I never knew the reason why. Thank you for sharing your experience! I‘ll be considering if it‘s worth it too. 13mo
See All 6 Comments
GlassAsDiamonds Wow - “unlimited but... yeah, not really”??? Do you have a consumer ombudsman where you live? Those are some deceptive trade practices ....😡😡😡 13mo
InLibrisVeritas @AnansiGirl You're welcome! They said they are trying to make it better, but it just seems off. 13mo
InLibrisVeritas @GlassAsDiamonds I think they have a very vague line in their FAQ about limiting some books based on publisher agreements, so that might cover them a bit. I'll have to look into it. 13mo

What app do y‘all use to listen to audiobooks? I‘ve recently started listening to them at work but the app through my library only lets me download 4 a month 😩 is Audible worth it or do you have any other suggestions?

Ashley_Nicoletto I use Scribd! $8.99 a month and worth every single penny. 1y
Ashley_Nicoletto Mostly unlimited listening. Sometimes if I'm really devouring them they'll make me wait til my membership renews for new releases. I've learned the limit is about 13 a month. 🤣🤣I can still listen to older releases or anything I have saved during that time though. So so worth it. (edited) 1y
MeganAnnabell I can get 4 books a month through the library and I have mine and my boyfriends account to use. So 8 from there and 13 extra might be alright! I‘m gonna look into Scribd definitely. Thank you! 1y

Chelsea.Poole Does your library have Libby? 1y
MeganAnnabell @Chelsea.Poole they don‘t. My library uses Hoopla 1y
Chelsea.Poole They may call it overdrive, that‘s the parent company and the Libby app is relatively new. If not...I don‘t know your situation or where you‘re located, but something that has worked for me is obtaining library cards in bigger cities with well funded libraries in my state. Then using my card number for their digital resources. 1y
mrozzz Audible has so many sales, it has been quite worthwhile to me 1y
LibrarianRyan I do love Hoopla. Libro.com has been great. They are similar to scrub and audible. I only ever use free books and don't listen that often. 1y
Kristy_K Try seeing if your county has a library system that uses Libby(Overdrive). My city also only uses Hoopla but my county has a library system and I was able to get a library card for both city and county. 1y
MeganAnnabell @Kristy_K we only have County Library systems, we don‘t have City libraries 😔 and our County is the size of Rhode Island and has probably one of the biggest library systems around here with 9 different branches. It‘s just not that big on audiobooks 👎🏻 (edited) 1y
Kristy_K @MeganAnnabell That sucks. :-/ 1y
janeycanuck I use Scribd, too. Really good value - the ebooks are usually backlist but the audios include new releases for some reason. It was 1 audio a month not that long ago but they went back to (mostly) unlimited a few months ago and I dropped my Audible membership, which I have not regretted at all. 1y

JulAnna What are your favorite podcasts? 1y
Linda906 @JulAnna There are so many book lover podcasts out there, and I might just listen to all of them. I have a long commute, so lots of reading/listening time! 1y

I thought it sounded like they‘d be offering new books each day this week, but apparently the same 3 all week, but hey, they‘re free !
I thought these stats were interesting . Can you imagine one audiobook that is 126 HOURS long ?

And for those HARRY POTTER FANS, can anyone tell my why this book would be the one most listened to ? Is it book 1 ?

Aloisi_tribe Prisoner of Azkaban is book three. It‘s the book that is most people‘s favorite out of the series (and the best movie too in my opinion). 2y

I have only had an Audible subscription for a month, but already thinking about canceling it and getting Scribd instead.
Any Littens have experience with Scribd? Pros, Cons?

Yeah_I_Read I use Scribd and they have an awesome selection. My only issue is that it‘s hard to find newer books that are outside of their recommendations for you. They make you do a little leg work but for the price it‘s hard to complain. They have all the same features as audible. 😊 2y
sammisho @Yeah_I_Read I love using overdrive and 90% of the time is all I need. But sometimes I can't get new releases or sequels! 2y
Ashley_Nicoletto I use Scribd and love it. They have a great selection for the price. I agree with @Yeah_I_Read that it's difficult to find new books and I don't love that they don't tell you what percent you are done with the book. Buttttt again the price beats out these complaints. 2y

For those asking about the free audiobooks in Audible. You can find them in your app under channels, scroll down to the bottom and there is a link to audiobook collections and then they have several different categories. You can‘t download them but only steam them. But there are several great titles. I am in the US on an iPhone so don‘t know if that makes a difference.
