Every Heart a Doorway
Every Heart a Doorway | Seanan McGuire
Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children No Solicitations No Visitors No Quests Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost. PRAISE FOR EVERY HEART A DOORWAY "Seanan McGuire has long been one of the smartest writers around, and with this novella we can easily see that her heart is as big as her brain. We know this story isn't true, but it is truth." — Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series (TV's True Blood) "Seanan McGuire once again demonstrates her intimate knowledge of the human heart in a powerful fable of loss, yearning and damaged children." — Paul Cornell, author of London Falling and Witches of Lychford

This is definitely not a whimsical read, it‘s quite dark for YA. I found it easy to pinpoint who the murderer was but it was an entertaining read nonetheless. I doubt I will read the sequels as it was all just a bit insubstantial & an inconsistency (to me anyway) near the end marred it. 3⭐️

This is a beautiful book! It focuses on the people who come back from magical adventures, which is a question I‘ve always asked. I loved that the main character is ace and it let me put my finger on why I love Fairyland stories but dislike Alice in Wonderland!

This novella is interesting. It‘s very short so don‘t expect major plot or character development but it‘s also part of a series so is really just setting a scene. I didn‘t rabidly love it as people seem to, but it was interesting. It‘s pure fantasy, mixed in with the world as we know it. Reminded me of Mrs Peregrine and those books a bit. My library does not have this labeled as YA which, in my opinion, it clearly is, right?? It has that teen vibe

Lindy This series is shelved in the adult section at my library too. My YA book club has been reading them and we‘ve talked about their crossover adult/YA nature. 2mo

This was alright. Now I'm not going to go join the cult but I'll definitely read the sequel. It's got a weird tone but liked the premise, the representation, the characters and the mystery. I wasn't surprised with who the murderer was though and I'm normally blind to that stuff

lyradora You mean if I had my pick of fantasy or sci fi worlds? Tough choice. For sci fi, I would go with Star Trek, because -- duh -- holodecks. For a fantasy world ... um .... the world of Hilda, from the graphic novels and netflix series. 😊 But that's just my current favorite. 2mo

This one surprised me! I am not a fantasy person, but I‘m trying hard to be. I have read so much about this series that I decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed this and I‘m already falling in love with the “misfit” children at the heart of this world. The story did take a morbid turn that I wasn‘t expecting, but I will definitely continue with the series. Maybe there‘s a fantasy reader inside me...baby steps! 😀 #LitsyAtoZ #TheLetterE

Fabulous fantasy novel (it's so short! though I don't think it's a novella). I love the way McGuire builds this world, a boarding school for teenagers who have returned to this world from somewhere in the fantasy realm and long to back. Somehow, in this short book, she manages to have a mystery, to demonstrate great diversity of gender identity and orientation, AND build a gorgeous series of fantasy worlds.

Finished this one yesterday (?) and I liked it.
It's a short book so I didn't really expect to be blown away with it. But it was interesting, I really like the concept. Will be continuing with the others.

I just wish it was longer :(
(Though, maybe then it would be a lot slower, so this might be a good thing.)

This book was so up my alley. Dark, creepy but not scary. A school for children who have disappeared to other worlds, returned against their will, and can‘t readjust. Loved the characters, stories of other lands and distinctions between them (Nonsense vs. Logic, etc). and that there was no love triangle or even major romance component. Plus an asexual character, not something I‘ve seen in YA before. No book pic so here‘s my snuggler this morning.

What a great, quick read! The story focuses on a school for children who have gone to different worlds after finding a doorway. Now back in their original world, the children are seeking a way back into their fantasy world.

I went ahead and ordered the next book in the series. Can‘t wait to see where the other books take me!

Also, huge hooray for the portrayal of asexual and transgender characters!!!

This book was a big surprise! I didn‘t actually no anything about it other than the characters were kids who went to portal worlds and came back and that it had good lgbtq representation. 3hr travel time to talk about heart‘s doorways, hierarchies of oddballs/misfits, story arcs & world building with my #IRL #BookClub. We had different thoughts about the book - but lesser judgments and psychological diagnosis by laypeople flying about - well, ok, less than usual. I am the registered clinical psychologist in our group but these folks here (mostly writers) love dissecting a character‘s psyche and declaring (flawed) diagnosis. 😭😂🤣

Lindy There‘s much to admire in this novel but I was in the minority in my book club because I found its flaws distracting. The continuity errors bothered me most. (edited) 5mo
GatheringBooks @Lindy same!!! i was not too impressed with the world building which felt rushed and not as thoughtful as i would have liked it to be. it is also classified under adult novels here in singapore libraries, most likely bec of the LgBT themes (hardly surprising here). the introduction of another character more than halfway through the novel also felt like an afterthought. (edited) 5mo
Lindy @GatheringBooks I see this as a crossover YA/adult title. Unfortunately for me, the other members of my YA book discussion group (mostly professors, librarians & teachers) like this author so much that we‘ve read two more in the series. I bailed on Beneath the Sugar Sky, but of the three, I like best: 5mo
GatheringBooks @Lindy the two authors in our book club (husband and wife) had also read the entire series and have ordered the fourth book that just came out this year. am planning on still continuing with the series just to see whether the story arc improves and whether the worldbuilding begins to make sense and if i develop at least some level of connection with any of the characters. i felt it was a mash up of miss peregrine and valente‘s fairyland series. 5mo
Lindy @GatheringBooks Yeah, there‘s definitely some mashing-up. Some deft twists on children‘s literature classics, especially the ones like Narnia with doorways into other worlds. 5mo
