Every Heart a Doorway
Every Heart a Doorway | Seanan McGuire
Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children No Solicitations No Visitors No Quests Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost. PRAISE FOR EVERY HEART A DOORWAY "Seanan McGuire has long been one of the smartest writers around, and with this novella we can easily see that her heart is as big as her brain. We know this story isn't true, but it is truth." Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series (TV's True Blood) "Seanan McGuire once again demonstrates her intimate knowledge of the human heart in a powerful fable of loss, yearning and damaged children." Paul Cornell, author of London Falling and Witches of Lychford

Well, this was just a perfect spooky, macabre little book. Thank you so much for including it in my #BasicWitchSwap package @monalyisha ! I have already ordered the next two in the series!

LeahBergen I liked this one, too! 3w
monalyisha Yes! 🙌🏻 Knowing what I now know about how risky it was to go off-list for you, I feel *very* accomplished. 😅 3w
monalyisha I‘m excited for you to read Book 2! I think I may have mentioned that it (along with Book 4) is one of my favorite books in the series! They‘re such great bite-sized reads. It kind of makes me feel like a kid who waited until the last minute to do their summer reading…but I love short books! 😜 There needs to be snappy novella-lovers merch…whatever the opposite of “I like big books and I cannot lie” is. 🍑 3w
mklong @monalyisha You should feel accomplished, you totally nailed it! I told you we are witchy kindred spirits! I love short books too. I think it comes from my love of poetry. I love when an author can do so much, with so few, well chosen, words 3w

This was a gorier YA novella than I'd expected, which made me like it more. It was a perfect, quick Halloween read. I will happily continue with the series. This is the third book I've read by Seanan McGuire and all three were impressive--all smart and bloody and inclusive.

I adored this novella about kids who went through doors/portals to other worlds - some nonsensical, some very logical, but all ones where they felt like they belonged. For a variety of reasons, they had to come back to this one and were sent to a boarding school for special children. It‘s fantasy and mystery and just a lot of fun, even if it was a bit predictable. I‘m definitely going to read the next one (and not just because I own it 😉).

A creepy, fantastical school where children who have been to alternative lands becomes even more dangerous with a serial killer roaming its halls. A little on the gory side. Definitely more Grimm than Disney.

I loved this novella and can't wait to read the rest of the series! The school for wayward children houses those who have travelled through portals to other worlds and are now stuck in the 'real' world and can't adjust to their old life. The writing captures the whimsical and the melancholy, the grief of not belonging and the hope that one day you will find your door home again. It was poignant, mysterious, and a little creepy. I enjoyed it a lot

I accidentally read book 4 before book 1 (tagged) of this series. The author jumps about, so not much was spoiled. The series is about secret doorways leading to different worlds; worlds that do not make sense even to other portal travelers. But each world fits the individual traveler perfectly. Thankfully I didn‘t let the YA tag stop me from giving the series a chance. If you like the H. Potter series I recommend this. It is more mature than H.P.

I finished this audiobook last week but never posted. The workweek lately has just tired me out, so by the time I get home, I am exhausted. I have been hearing so many good things about this series that I finally listed to the first book on Scribd. They are very short but definitely worth it. Some kids find these doors that lead them to these different worlds and some find their way back to the real world, many wanting to go back. 👇

tracey38 👆 All the worlds seem to be vastly different but the perfect place for the child that finds themselves there. I am looking forward to reading the rest in this series. 9mo

Magical worlds & children. Something like Alice in Wonderland meets Miss Peregrine's. Dark & twisted. TOTALLY up my alley. I loved nearly everything about this. A good diverse set of characters & a really fun atmosphere (hello creepy boarding school feel). A lot of world-building in a very short book & fast pacing that made whole read feel something like a whirlwind. I am hooked. I want more of this world, more of these characters. Just MORE.

As always, Seanan McGuire delivers an engaging tale with a fantastic world. This book is the beginning of the Wayward Children series, and introduces us to a boarding school for children who have walked through doorways into other worlds. A murder mystery unfolds as children begin to be found dead with parts of them missing. Another fun #queerbooks read.

No matter how many times I read this story, I always discover something new. This time it was all the foreshadowing. Every Heart a Doorway is brilliant, beautiful, and my favorite of the series (I think). The characters are some of my favorite in any fantasy (YA or otherwise). They're written so exceptionally well. Each character feels important to the story, and when there's under 200 pages, that's an impressive feat!

West‘s Home for Wayward Children is a respite for kids returned to our reality after adventures elsewhere. After Nancy arrives, exiled from her own fairyland—the Underworld, gruesome murders commence. Crackling with all the enchantment of the classic tales of “wayward children,” like Alice or the Pevensies, with a delicious darkness all its own, EHAD will have you looking around every corner—for imminent death or for a door to another dimension...

What happens to children after they return from their trip through a portal into a magical land? Can life ever return to normal? Do they want it to? Nancy has been sent to a special boarding school by her parents who believe that she is delusional. But the school is not quite what it seems, and when a body turns up, everyone's life may be in peril. Clever and magical, this novella speaks to the longings within us all.

🎧 tough review because I was bounced out of the story every 90 seconds! I‘d like to know how many times my name “Nancy” was said in this short 4 hour story. I estimate a thousand. 😝 Otherwise it‘s a fabulously creative book. I‘d like to buy the treeware. There‘s swearing and some may feel adult situations. I loved it. Good character development. I feel like I'm in the minority here, but this just isn't grabbing me despite the very cool concept. I listened to one of her other books as Mira Grant, the one about bloggers covering zombies (actual title??) and felt similarly underwhelmed, although I persevered with that one til the end. But I'm not gonna make the same mistake here! I'm glad to have something widely available with ace representation though. #QueerBooks #AceBooks

I checked this out due to a friend's high praise of it and I was really hoping to fall in love with it. There are good pieces but nothing was developed enough, the majority of the characters are dull and flat, and not enough information about anything is given. I don't really understand why this series is split up into six small books when it really would benefit from being a longer novel with more world building.

Rich, imaginative, and oh so creepy. I could not put this one down. Set in a boarding school for teens who have fallen into magical realms and can no longer find happiness in the real world, this one combines the magic school trope with the whodunnit horror trope. Great for fans of fantasy AND horror. A page-turning mystery that is so much about what it's like to feel with all your heart that you don't belong.
