Filled with twists, turns, lots of food shared at the table of family, this was an easy, light-hearted read with a beautiful cover worth collecting. If Kristy Manning ever wants to write a companion cookbook to Romy and Alexandra‘s tale, I‘d love to see what‘s cooking! This story certainly had all the perfect ingredients for a great recipe! ♥️

Crazeedi I have a hold on overdrive for this book 1w

It‘s easy to see why Manning‘s The Song of the Jade Lily is appearing on many Summer Must Read lists. This is a novel glowing with the bright light of Shanghai, Australia, London, and Austria. Like a fascinating vacation in a book!

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up because, honestly, I couldn‘t stop listening. I think if Carrowmore House has featured more strongly in the mix, this would have sailed into a 5 🌟 review (who doesn‘t love a good, haunted seaside extravaganza)!!

There were a lot of plot twists here which kept you on your toes and kind of an interesting dream interpretation twist that overall made for really, satisfying reading at the end of the day.

Going with 3 stars overall. The book design is capital G - GORGEOUS! But, I kind of felt like the story fizzled out somewhere in the middle and there were a lot of ominous fours which felt more repetitive than plot building.

That being said, this checks a lot of fandom boxes - The Raven Cycle, The Covenant, etc. if you loved those, then you will adore this!

This was a sloooooowwwww burn. VERY loosely based on Medusean mythology (read snakes 🐍 in hair but that‘s it) with a revenge theme.

✅ The snakes!
✅ Hulde - quite the cameo!
✅ Wow! #covercandy
👎 Too reminiscent of the cheesiness that is M. Night Shyamalan‘s The Village.
👎 Milla as a character was so naive / disconnected that I didn‘t believe in her strength. As such, the plot never quite denoue‘d. It just sort of meh meh ments!

Pierce Brown, you are the Aaron Burr of storytelling. Patient to gorydamned perfection. The whole time you said, wait for it! And then you twisted the story on its side, had it dance a rather clever jig I must say seeing as how I totally bought it ... and then you shoved a knife in its gut and said, “See! All done. I was right!”

@Litsy Just make a “Loved It” button, with a picture of a love bug, & I‘ll just hug it all over this review! ♥️

Annika Rose is a high-functioning autistic who is just breaking into social society when she goes to a campus chess match and beats the pants off Jonathan Hoffman! Such a charmer, he loves it, he falls for her, boy meets girl, schwing!

And Annika‘s has it rough, cause let‘s be honest some people suck, but Jonathan loves her at a cellular level. Reading about a man protecting a female in distress will always warm the cockles of your heart.

I have to say this hero/antihero concept was a refreshing. Right off, we are surviving on wits and dimwittedness! Kellen‘s just a kid, y‘all. He‘s clever, but he‘s still working it out!

Good thing cause there are traitors afoot, chain spells to break, truths to uncover and a ruddy Squirrel Cat who is determined to eat your eyes! (As far as I know, no actual eyes were harmed in the making of this tale)! Judges call: No Kellsters, no solvee!

Holy Squirrel Cats that was awesome!

Kellen is a young mage trying out to become adult mage. But the magic coveted by his Jan‘Tep people keeps eluding him. Unfortunately, for young Kellster (my nickname, de Castell would never deign to nickname so!), this is a magic exclusive kind of society - read: no magic, no workee! Or so says his sister Shalla who quickly exposes his intelligence for weakness.

Melissa_J I just finished reading one of De Castell‘s Greatcoat books! He‘s a great writer, and I‘m looking forward to starting this series. 2w

Olivia Klein / [redacted] / recent recruit to the Tech team / studier of AIDAN / crushing on [recused].

This was a quick, adorable story that will put perceptions of AIDAN‘s limits to the test. In terms of a prequel novella, it rounds out the Illuminae work we all long to return to, but it doesn‘t add much to the existing storylines solidified by Obsidio!

Just saying, I would‘ve like more of Wolf. Wolf 🐺 was the fifth star!

#unpopularopinion but this was just a so-so for me. While there was a time in my life when I would have identified with the whole “I am woman, hear me roar” idea, it was a bit overdone here. It made me sad in a way. On a brighter note, I suppose I‘m blessed that I no longer feel either limited or defined by this concept.

Two crazy kids agree to faux honeymoon together. Cuteness ensues, dreams of babies are conceived (not really but I object to the trope that all romance novels go to weddings. What is that??), brother‘s are determined to be scoundrels, jobs are found, jobs are lost, Hawaii is visited. What more could you want?

Oh and it‘s Christina Lauren. Brilliant writers! To the moon, Alice!

I feel like if the whole story had been told from Lucy‘s perspective, it would have been stunning ... but then the title wouldn‘t have been as brilliant! 😉

So if you like a brooding mystery that frolics through the halls of a rather large house, this is your gal (no one writes places quite like Kate!). But overall there is just a lot going on here!

I love Kate Morton. But I didn‘t love this book. I felt it was long winded, filled to the brim with (dare I say too many) characters and lacked organization to bring it on home.

That being said, the writing itself is lovely and there were a lot of brilliant thoughts. But every time I had that feeling of “oooh something big‘s about to happen.” Nope, didn‘t happen. #botmbuddyread

kspenmoll So well said; some of my sentiments. Felt ending rushed to tidy up all the dangling not so necessary knots, loose ends- to convoluted & disorganized for me. Same rating! 3w

Everything about this book worked - the hunt, the hunted, the huntress and the one and only Nina Markova and that‘s saying a lot given how trope-y WWII fiction has become. I certainly didn‘t want to read yet another spin on the same ole wartime yarn...too easy to go from staid to boring to cliched.
