Wait, what?! That ending came out of nowhere! Like California sunshine after pages trekked through an Icelandic winter snow storm. It almost ruined the overall gloomy atmospherics that were a real strong point. Beautiful cover candy though!

My idea of a perfect Sunday is lying about with a cookbook close by. Diana Henry is always a go-to favorite (even though her books always feature typos). The good is simple and most importantly - malleable! Ideas anyone can suit to their own hearth, tastes and table. Another stunner!

Much like this blurry picture, it‘s kind of a shame too, because there was a lot going on here, all of it intriguing! By the end of the book, I can only remember bits and bobs none of which I could spin into a basic book summary. I do plan to continue with the series, but with hesitation.

That unfortunate situation where this was both an incredible and terrible read all at the same time. Beautifully designed, I felt like the author‘s pen was a little to heavy - mastering large story scapes but without those pesky narrative explanations vital to building fragmented thoughts into memorable plot lines.

“You‘re life is like a stockpot, simmering with all these minutes: everything you‘ve ever learned and everything you‘ve ever loved.”

These are recipes of grief & mourning. Low faff eats stirred over a stove to remind yourself you can indeed survive. It‘s ironic that at the heart of this aching sadness is the staff of life, the baking of the bread needed to feed life. The fueling of bolognese energy. The bubbling tears of the soup pot.

MellieAntoinette We can handle so much more than we think. The legacy of grief in a cookbook of the heart. Beautifully written, gorgeously illustrated and heartbreakingly delicious. 2w

I love that Christie rewrote ch12. The original would have resulted in confusion just when we need pristine presence of mind. It isn‘t easy to both unravel a string and leave its components completely intact, but that is the job of the detective as much as it is the goal of a good narrator. Superbe!

DAG never ceases to amaze me. Writing blessed with succinct simplicity that becomes absolument clear...as soon as Poirot explains it to us.

I think that‘s why Poirot holds a special place in the Mystery cannon. The cheekiest of narrators who may actually be smarter than a 5th grader! The cleverest of characters reigning supreme only when the reader is ready for elucidation and information.

On the one hand, this was everything I wanted in a Cressworth adventure. ♥️ 🌹 Hence, the 4 🌟s. But...

I totally understand the criticisms. The two biggest:

1. The title, while eyecatching, doesn‘t fit the story. Houdini plays a bit part that is both noticeably fictionalized and almost out of character for this particular tale. To be fair, this is a pet peeve of mine - if the title doesn‘t fit the story, it feels rigged. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

MellieAntoinette 2. Thomas was also relegated to a cameo, featuring only long enough to remind us of the couple we all desperate to catch up with. I hope this doesn‘t continue cause it kind of made me dislike Audrey Rose. 🥀 3w

Boy! Imagine that conversation:
Me: Hey, I‘m going out of town for a week. Would you mind watching my pets for me?

You: Sure! Just leave me instructions.

Me: Remove 1 cup of the starter, add 1 cup flour and 3/4 cup + 2T water. Stir and let sit 4-5hrs at room or until bubbly. If it doesn‘t bubble, put it in the oven w the light on til it does.

You: What the hell kinda pet is this?

Me: My sourdough starter!

You: No!

So all you THT fans got me thinking, surely I‘m not this antisocial?!? I mean, it‘s a different kind of party but maybe I‘m down with it!

Read ✅! Enjoyed 😊! Will definitely be reading “the sequel.” 👍🏻

Not gonna lie, this is an intricately woven yarn, but boy is it a Super salty undesirable take on the state of the union. Atwood‘s def owed props for this fictional field of dreams cause she built it! But I really don‘t want to visit it!!

Kayla.Adriena Different kind of party for sure! It seems like a line should be drawn dressing up as a Handmaid for Halloween though?! Apparently it's a thing 1mo

When The Testaments was released, I found myself wondering, “Is everyone Atwooding without me?” 😜

For years I‘d heard raves about this one, through its own super secret Mayday word-of-mouth underground. But I‘m a firm believer that books, like seasons, come around to us when we are most open to the stories they have to share.

But oy vay! The content always sounded like watching the evening news and who WANTS to do that? Positively dreadful!

And yet, I firmly believe that it is not the storms permeating Zhivago‘s underlying theme, but the love story that has firmly sealed it within halls of the classic novels. In truth, the first time I read it, I didn‘t even notice the social commentary. Just a candle, flickering in a window, calling Yuri home.

In terms of Reese‘s book club, this has the potential to be as big as, and is certainly as memorable as, Where The Crawdads Sing. ♥️

TrishB This does look good 👍🏻 1mo
marleed I really liked it. I downgraded my rating only because I didn‘t care about the American romance. I found myself quickly reading through those paragraphs to get back to the rest of the story. 1mo

Boy! That title! Who doesn‘t love a good secret?!?

Stunning. From the first note hastily plucked on a typewriter‘s keys to the last words handwritten on bartered paper. Like many, I have already picked up Doctor Zhivago for a re-read.

Having lived in Russia briefly, I remember Pasternak‘s opus magnus as still being ‘secretly‘ discussed. In stories of book smuggling and whispered reviews; in terms of progressive thoughts and revisionist history.
