A brilliant 100-page novella about an Irani man named Idir who is taking the British Citizenship Test.
@Neuvel has honed the knife of psychological suspense and the interview technique to a keen edge. We see it in full glory in The Themis Trilogy but there is something elegant about the distilled form.
I read this quicker than drinking a cup of tea!
I wouldn‘t call it a novel, more like an extended psychological moral dilemma. Interesting current themes. This would obviously never happen......
I would love to study this novella in a psychology/sociology/global relations class. There are so many current society issues that the author manages to draw attention to in 100 pages. I think he creates a lot of questions especially regarding immigration practices and the effects that it has on people and also how "ideal" people are expected to react and behave in society.
Was sick most of the day and really did no reading, going to try to get this very short in.
A hard book to read. The last series by this author had giant robot fights. This one is a Truman Show/The Trolley Problem episode of The Good Place/The Milgram Experiment levels of gut wrenching and messed up. It‘s really, really good. But it doesn‘t leave you thinking good things about humanity.
Less than 100 pages but so packed with moral and ethical dilemmas. I‘d call this speculative fiction ( very different from the Waking Giants series) A great read. Thanks so much @LibrarianRyan ‼️❣️‼️

Blurb: The Test, a thrilling, timely exploration of a dystopian near future where the road to citizenship is harrowing—and carries a price.
