Neverwhere
Neverwhere | Neil Gaiman
The #1 New York Times bestselling author's ultimate edition of his wildly successful first novel featuring his "preferred text"—and including his special Neverwhere tale "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back"Published in 1997, Neil Gaiman's darkly hypnotic first novel, Neverwhere, heralded the arrival of a major talent and became a touchstone of urban fantasy. Over the years, a number of versions were produced both in the U.S. and the U.K. Now Gaiman's preferred edition of his classic novel reconciles these works and reinstates a number of scenes cut from the original published books.Neverwhere is the story of Richard Mayhew, a young London businessman with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he discovers a girl bleeding on the sidewalk. He stops to help her—an act of kindness that plunges him into a world he never dreamed existed.Slipping through the cracks of reality, Richard lands in the Neverwhere—a London of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth. The Neverwhere is home to Door, the mysterious girl Richard helped in the London Above. Door, a noblewoman whose family has been murdered, is on a quest to find the agent that slaughtered her family and thwart the destruction of this underworld kingdom. If Richard is ever to return to his former life, he must join the journey to save Door's world—and find a way to survive.A hallucinatory fantasia of mystery, mythology, and terror that "draws equally from George Lucas, Monty Python, Doctor Who, and John Milton" (USA Today), Neverwhere is an "Alice in Wonderland with a punk edge" (Poppy Z. Brite), "that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune).

While it‘s probably not my favorite Gaiman novel, it‘s still a lot of fun. A great little delve into the dark and forgotten cracks of fantasy. I think only Gaiman could make the London sewer system sound magical. I also find the protagonist, Richard, to be appropriately confused, skeptical and frightened by the whole experience, which is a rare change from the typical hero who always seems ready for destiny.

“In the darkness, afterward, she would hold him very tightly, and her long brown curls would tumble over his chest, and she would whisper to him how much she loved him, and he would tell her he loved her and always wanted to be with her, and they both believed it to be true.”

When Richard Mayhew first saw Door, injured and unconscious, he couldn't just #LetItBe ... And because he helps her, he finds himself in times of trouble. And while Mother Mary may not be involved, there is an angel. 😉

Wonderful book, but I had the back luck to be recommended Neverwhere as a sequel to Harry Potter, which of course was not what I expected. It is a magical world, in London, and a group of people who become friends. A true work of fiction.

Listened to this one as a audio book, with Neil Gaiman. I wanted to love it but wanted to bail so bad, and skipt the new chapter at the end. I don't know, I have a hard time finishing fantasy books , I feel like it should my my genera but maybe it's a reason I don't read that much fantasy.
Loved the plot twists, and the story was interesting, but my focus wandered of all the time and I needed to go back to listening again.

I checked this book out from the library a while ago and then never read it, so I bought the book from a local bookstore. Lemme say: I‘m sorry I took so long. This book has subtle humor and is action packed. There‘s a bit of creepy “older man likes younger woman who is essentially portrayed as a child”, but it was a really good story. I didn‘t even know the sequel was being written until after I finished the book and now I‘m PUMPED.

This now the second book that I‘ve listened to the author read (after Stardust), and I‘m officially a big fan. He has the absolute best reading voice, first of all. Second of all, as a fan of fantasy fiction, I am so drawn in by his characters, the plot, the side plots. Wasn‘t even a fan of Richard Mayhew as a lead but everything else was so magical, I loved it. I‘m obviously late to the scene here (age 6 when this came out), but I‘m in now!

julesG @GingerAntics @miralunasbooknook @toric - Makes total sense that Neil wasn't too happy with the show and published the "author's preferred text" version. It is close to the book but it doesn't have this slightly 'steampunk' mist about it. The suits/clothing is rather modern/normal. So, I'm glad I've watched it and know what it's about, but I prefer the book and the BBC audioplay. 6mo

Neverwhere | Neil Gaiman
post image

1. My 2018 planner. Mapping out the last few weeks of the year!
2. About 6, which is the usual for me.
3. Dark! And if you wanna throw in some spicy peppers and sea salt into it, I'll be even happier!
4. Depends on what cut I have. Right now, it's every 3-4 weeks. But I work in a salon, so it's pretty easy to take care of.
5. I absolutely recommend it. This was my 4th time to read it!

Book: Neverwhere (forever & always)

Author: Neil Gaiman...but since I used him for “g” I‘ll also mention Annalee Newitz who wrote one of the most thought-provoking books I‘ve read in the last couple of years

Movie: The Nightmare Before Christmas

Food: Nuts (almonds & pistachios), noodles (really any kind) & nachos
