I am in love with this book series. Midnight riot opened the world up nicely while still containing a single mystery. The writing is seriously hilarious and the characterization was amazing. I always recommend this book and have gotten great feedback.

I generally don‘t read books in translation after I‘ve read the original but I was quite curious to check out the Audible adaptation. I really enjoyed the way they presented the story (some off the sound effects and music choices are hilarious) although I still prefer the English audio books. Will probably listen to the next one, too.

julesG Heya, are you maybe interested in the #12Littens12Books? 1mo
julesG Also, books in translation can make me furious. Something always gets lost in translation. 1mo
Kaddele Sounds great! Where do I sign up? 1mo
Kaddele And yes, translations can be incredibly frustrating. With films and audio it‘s mainly because German versions usually have everybody use the same accent - which is my main issue with these audios. The original reading is so rich with accents and varieties that this version just seems a bit bland in that respect. 1mo

Another bk that's been sat in a pile for some time and i think it qualifies as it's a police procedural with wizards and ghosts. It was a real romp which i enjoyed even though supernatural crime isn't normally my cup of tea. Despite owing a lot to harry p i think i will read more and certainly im glad i eventually picked it up.

Liatrek I really enjoyed this one too! I‘m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. 3mo
Cinfhen Cool concept for a novel but don‘t think this will be my cup of tea at all 😉 3mo
batsy This has been on my radar but I've been putting it off because supernatural crime doesn't sound like my cup of tea, as well! But as always, your picks always intrigue me so I'm tempted to give this a try 🙂 3mo
andrew61 @batsy yes id probably only recommend it if you are missing the world of harry potter. It definitely owed muc to that and other such books and i probably wouldn't have read it but couldn't for life of me think of another genre busting!! 3mo

Great fantasy. I love that the Goddess Mother Thames is a Nigerian lady. I must say the audiobook is superb because all the accents are great. I also like that the protagonist who becomes a magician apprentice is not the usual white boy. I just wish the author had not made Newton the guy who discovered how magic works; because even though I am a scientist and love physics, Newton the man was a real nasty piece of work

I‘m having a difficult time deciding how I feel about this one. I love mysteries, and this was good one. I enjoyed the author‘s writing, especially the snark. I like fantasy, although high fantasy as opposed to urban fantasy. I would describe this as JK Rowling meets John Scalzi meets Christopher Fowler (maybe, or another British mystery author). I should have loved it, but perhaps too many supernatural beings for me. Jury‘s out still. 3.5⭐️ #2019

KathyWheeler I loved this series, but I like supernatural stuff. 5mo
rretzler @KathyWheeler I used to love supernatural stuff, but I‘m finding as I get older, I have a harder time reconciling with the unrealism of it. IDK. Maybe I‘m like Peter and looking for a more scientific explanation! Perhaps because the supernatural was so “in your face” instead of being more subtle. I did enjoy the writing and I will read more of the series, so I‘m certain it will grown on me. 😀 5mo
chaoticgoodhufflepuff The supernatural stuff just seems to be a really badly kept secret that gets less secret as the series progresses. I would highly recommend giving the audiobooks a try! The narrator is amazing! ❤️ 5mo
KathyWheeler @blamethestardust He‘s one of best narrators I‘ve ever heard. I love him. 5mo
rretzler @blamethestardust @KathyWheeler Just looked him up and I‘ve never listened to anything he‘s narrated, but he sounds just like I expected Peter to sound, which is great! I‘ll go for an audio on the next one if my library has it 5mo

“. . . how could I say no [to Pegg and Frost]? I feel confident on several levels. I‘m working with creators and I know these people don‘t like bollocks. . . . Midnight Riot - Or Rivers of London, depending on who you ask - is the first book in a series I‘ve been meaning to revisit and catch up on. A friend recommended the audiobooks and they were so right! The narrator was GREAT. And the book itself held up on the reread! Can‘t wait for the next book to come in!

Enjoyed it immensely, good character development, I like the world that BA has created and am always drawn in by anecdotal tales from history and am always suckered into stories of magic, fables and myths. Ticks a lot of my boxes. Feel like there is a lot more to explore here.

Pickpick

A fun and witty genre-smushing urban fantasy/police procedural! A detective gets introduced to London's paranormal underworld.

The narrator for this was perfect. I fell in love with his voice for Peter after only a few minutes. And the other voices were as individualized as the characters were.

I loved that London was a character by itself in this, the streets, the people, and the magic. ????? #charactersofcolor

CW: child death, chap 2

chaoticgoodhufflepuff Also, completely not serious question, but is Peter's constant focus on sex what it's actually like for non-ace people? Thinking about getting laid that much just seems exhausting! 😂 12mo

So... today was definitely supposed to be easy peasy, relax with my new book, not do anything more energetic than make some cookies.

There was... something in the flour. So instead, today turned into FINALLY chucking the twice-hand-me-down Tupperware, buying containers (and new flour) like an actual adult, and scrubbing down everything in the pantry while trying out new AirPods.

Because no. Just, no.

Fortunately, I have a very good book.

LibrarianRyan Ohhhhh. I hate that. About 3 weeks or so ago I wanted rice. And found things in my rice!!! Turns out they came in in a bag of 4h popcorn seeds we bought this summer. They smacked on anything with whole grains. Luckily most of my stuff was in Tupperware canisters but the rice, the popcorn, and the whole grain lasgunna noodles. Oh and Joshes granola. Yuck!!!!!!!!! 12mo
