Day 2 roundup. Finshed and loved Felix ever after. Great characters, details trans life with warmth and compassion. A very positive story, beautifully written
I love Felix ❤️

Started Trans which is a mind blowing, tough read but in a good way. It has me questioning my own beliefs and knowledge. It's an enlightening and stimulating read so far.

Soubhiville I gave this audiobook a try this week, and like several of you, the narration made me quit. Maybe eventually I‘ll pick up the physical book. 🤷‍♀️ 6d

jlhammar They really are incredible birds! I can understand Heinrich‘s passion for studying them. Very cool that the Baffin Island ravens seemed to speak a different dialect. And the poor murdered raven! Fascinating to learn about what a tight group he had. Loved the observations of raven play. Really appreciating all of the photos and drawings. 6d
jlhammar Oh, and thought the trapper‘s story of the raven who was feeding lying still on its back whenever other ravens flew overhead was kind of mind-blowing. So interesting that it may have been playing dead to make it look like poisoned meat. 6d
TheBookHippie I love it. I‘ve always had the book. I‘m watching my crows more intently and I‘m definitely going to get more of his books- physical copies only 🤣🤣😵‍💫. I finished and had to bring my book back to library! So grateful for this group to find new books to Love♥️ 6d
ElizaMarie So, I ended up finishing this book today. (I had a lot of #AudioChores to complete). Although I would have much rathered this as a physical book, I enjoyed the stories throughout! Ravens are fascinating! I am so glad to have learned so much about them! Ravens have always been a bit mysterious to me. I felt like we had “humanized them“ more because of cultural stories, but his research proves how intelligent these animals are! 6d
Hooked_on_books I found the caching and play behaviors fascinating. I can‘t imagine recording the info on all the caching and stealing by other birds within the aviary and not laughing at least a little bit. And I love the various behaviors of play. I also appreciate that he acknowledges that as humans we cannot know for sure if these behaviors mean anything other than play. It sounds like the ravens are having fun and I hope they are! 6d

jlhammar Still enjoying this book immensely. The piece vs pile experiments were so fascinating. Loved learning about the raven-wolf symbiosis. Especially how ravens “serve the wolves as extra eyes and ears.” Also thought it was interesting that Maine game wardens find ravens helpful in catching poachers since they are often circling where the kill is being gutted. 2w
TheBookHippie I love this read. However I‘ve had a library book the entire time. I‘m watching my crows more intently now for sure. 2w
Hooked_on_books There were so many interesting bits this week! I was fascinated to learn that there seems to be no significant stress hormone difference in high vs low status birds. Since the high status birds tend to be bigger, it made me wonder if size is consistently passed on in the offspring or not. 2w
Hooked_on_books All the discussion of raven behavior at carcasses was amazing. I wonder what they‘re afraid of? The leaping back when approaching a new carcass made me think snakes, but who knows. And how smart to tag along with the wolves. Also, if I had entered that motel with the blood all over the parking lot and a bunch of people walking around with guns, I would have turned right back around and left! 2w
CaitZ I love wolves and have read many books about them. The wolf-raven connection is one of the reasons I wanted to learn more about ravens. I found that section the most intriguing this week. 2w
AllDebooks This book is amazing. I'm learning so much. I haven't quite caught up to this section yet, but not too far behind. I can't put it down!! 2w
ElizaMarie So, as yall said, I was also really interested to hear about the connections with Ravens and Wolves. I love how our ancestors have stories of these relationships; now, we can explore them further. Also, I was surprised to hear about the lack of hormonal differences between alpha members. Again (it sounds like a broken record) but the audio is rough, but I am enjoying the information I am gleaning from this book :) (edited) 2w
Blackink_WhitePaper I am still struggling with this one . I may not be able to participate in the discussion. Please exclude my name from the thread . 2w
AllDebooks @Blackink_WhitePaper sorry to hear this. I'll take you off the taglist for this thread x 2w

ElizaMarie So, I‘m doing the audio (so it‘s rough). But I really do enjoy his “experiments” that he has been having with them. It‘s interesting to hear about the mirrors and their reactions to other animals in their area. It seems like the birds are pretty secure in their stance. But again he keeps on proving how individualized their behavior can be. 3w
ElizaMarie So I guess what I‘m saying is: yes, I like his style. I like the types of interactions he is staging for these birds. 3w
jlhammar Still enjoying this. The accounts of averted (seemingly thanks to ravens) cougar and grizzly bear attacks were the stand-outs for me in these chapters. That what humans may see as miraculous and being saved by ravens may actually be ravens working to help the predators (to their mutual benefit). So fascinating. 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m listening to it on audio, and still enjoying it. It really is fascinating, but I am glad I can read about it and don‘t have to arrange these myself 😂 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @jlhammar Yes, that‘s was great! 😂 Humans, always assuming the world revolves around them for their benefit 🤣 3w
Hooked_on_books I‘m continuing to enjoy this very much. I found the part on vocalizations fascinating. I‘m glad he didn‘t try to interpret what they each mean, as we clearly can‘t know. I do wish he had explained at some point some of the posturing they do (as in actually describing what each posture looks like). Their reactions, or lack thereof, to other birds was quite interesting, too. 3w
Chelsea.Poole Picturing him dressing up in different outfits to see how the birds would react was pretty fun. Even the grizzly suit 😂 He‘s definitely dedicated! Also, the albino bird who is shy in the shelter 😔 3w
CaitZ I found the part about the birds' calls interesting. I have no idea how he could distinguish the differences. Lately, I've found myself listening to crows more closely and I can't hear any differences. 3w
AllDebooks I'm loving all your comments, can't wait to get into the book, once it arrives. I'll come back and comment then. 3w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Chelsea.Poole Yes! I loved the costumes bit! 🤣 I‘m thoroughly enjoying this still. This is the type of book I was expecting with our last two reads, so I‘m very happy with all the detail and how much I‘m learning about actual ravens themselves. I enjoy the author‘s humor as well, like the bit towards the end of chapter 16 about the joys of climbing trees in the dark at subzero temps. 🥶🤣 3w
TheBookHippie @CaitZ I‘m watching the crows so much closer now!!! 2w

Cuilin I usually hate biographies, but this was engaging and inspiring in a way. 3w
Soubhiville At first I thought I might have a similar reaction to this as to Poseidon‘s Steed: too much content off topic. But no, I‘ve actually been enjoying this a lot! I‘m listening to the audio, and it seems a strange choice to have it narrated by a man, but actually it‘s well done. I love the close connection with her mom, and how she longed to be near the sea before she had ever seen it for the first time. 3w
Soubhiville Because I‘m doing audio I‘m pretty sure I‘ve gone past this weeks discussion point, so I won‘t say too much. But I‘m loving her exploration of tide pools and sharing what she finds there with her new friends. 3w
Soubhiville I never would have chosen this book on my own, I‘m so glad the group brought it to my attention. I‘m looking forward to finishing it in the next two weeks. 🦀🐡🙂 3w
jlhammar I'm enjoying this so far. Good choice for Women's History Month! Aside from reading Silent Spring many years ago, I didn't know much about her. I feel the same @Soubhiville - I especially loved that her mother supported her academic pursuits, didn't expect her to live a conventional life, and even typed her pieces for her. Also kind of an interesting look at nature writing/publishing at the time. 3w
Soubhiville @jlhammar When I occasionally read about the struggles writers go through to get published I always wonder how many wonderful articles, books, etc are out there unpublished for one reason or another. 3w
TheBookHippie @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm same just got my copy!! 3w
Graywacke Enjoying the comments. I‘ve been undecided on whether to join, but these comments are encouraging. I might try to follow on audio and follow up with something by Carson (free for audible members). 3w
Aimeesue This was a fun listen for me, as we‘ve lived near a lot of locations in the book - the Dept.of the Interior building in DC, her home in Si,ver Spring, MD, Woods Hole, MA. It was neat to picture her in all those places, struggling to support her family and get published. And like @Soubhiville and @jlhammar I loved her relationship with her mom. 3w
Chelsea.Poole I‘m just starting the audio but already enjoying it. It seems as though Carson is reluctant to become the “face” of the environmentalist movement. Also DDT is so so scary 😱 @jlhammar I‘m enjoying this as well, though I haven‘t even read Silent Spring! I need to address that asap. @Soubhiville I wouldn‘t have chosen this either, but glad it landed on my radar 😊 3w
AllDebooks Rachel Carson has been a hero of mine for decades. Although I'm familiar with her work, I know very little about her as a person. Really excited to be reading this with you all. It certainly has disappointed so far. I love all your positive comments ❤️ 3w
Ann_Reads Carson made interesting educational choices, given the time period and the fact biological science was in its infancy. There was usually some type of influential mentor involved too, helping her to make choices, along with hard work and some luck thrown into the mix. (It bothered me some that Carson put her family in a financial bind to fund her education.) ⬇ 2w
Ann_Reads As she found a niche with her writing, it's curious she initially wrote about things she had never witnessed/experienced before. I also wondered about her admiration of Williamson & questioned if she was naive about his political beliefs or just admired his writing in Tarka & Salar, & so chose to put blinders on. Luckily for her, the book review she wrote didn't backfire as it could have. Otherwise, I'm enjoying the historical info so far. (edited) 2w
Ann_Reads @Graywacke - I think you might like this one. Even the historical details that seem off topic become important to the narrative later on. (I just started Part 1, Chapter 5.) 2w

Cuilin A room is indoors, closed with walls, limited even boring. As a person it would be Cecil, as a society it‘s those that cling to old fashioned manners. A view outdoors is limitless, it‘s the Emerson‘s, it‘s a new generation willing to think and challenge. Such a clever title. 3w

Pickpick

This book has been an absolute delight to read and review. Alice Loxton has given us an insightful, witty and marvelous history of Georgian Britain never seen before. This is an incredible debut and it's so exciting to see a new female historian of such calibre.
We follow three young men, Thomas Rowlandson, James Gillray and Issac Cruickshank from their enrolment at the Royal Academies to their established careers as satirists. ⬇

AllDebooks This time period yields an unending source of serious issues for their comment on the social, political and ethical events. There was war, Napoleonic and American Independence, Royal scandal: the madness of King George III and the outrageous behaviour of the Prince Regent and political drama. All of these were portrayed with savage wit and acumen. They were the memes of their time, with people crowding to see the new illustrations in the ⬇ 3w

I enjoyed this so much, Loxton's writing is engaging, fun and astute. This will be on my books of the year list.

Cazxxx I‘m behind purely because the narration is so bad 🤦🏼‍♀️ 4w
ElizaMarie @Cazxxx ha I hear you! I had upped the time to 1.7 seems to help a little 4w
Aimeesue The way he constructed the experiments was really interesting to me - so full of bird and egg napping! 😄 And they don't find food by smell? You'd think that that would work for skunk carcasses, at least. 4w
Aimeesue @ElizaMarie Agreed - speeding it way up helped a lot. 4w
jlhammar Yes, the egg experiments were really interesting and surprising. Also fascinating to learn about their hunting abilities. 4w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I felt bad for the birds… once he named them, I got attached, and every time a story ended with “and I never saw them again” I felt sad. After he raised them I thought of them more as pets than experiments. My mistake, I know, but I think he learned his lesson too since then next group were called the colors of their leg bands. ⤵️ (edited) 4w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ I should add though, that he made pretty good experiments, and I like how each chapter is on a topic and a set of specific experiments to that topic. 4w
ElizaMarie I really am enjoying his experiments. He is so crafty, but of course the birds are one step ahead :) @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree with the sentiment when he “never saw them again”. I want to see them grow old :) it‘s like all this invested (this is why I would make a horrible observation nature person). 4w
TheBookHippie I fell into the pets mindset as well.. I do like how he writes and the chapters. I switched my thinking to how I mentor it‘s going better. I am already wanting two of his other books 👀😅. I have a library book. I can hardly ever do audio so glad I didn‘t try with this one 🙃. Im enjoying this and I feel I look at them in my yard differently now. 4w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ElizaMarie me too… they‘d be pets 😂 4w
ElizaMarie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa we have a ground hog in the back yard and a skunk that comes by sometimes. My husband and I name them and talk about their “back stories”. We stay away, so this is all creepy lurking through the window. But still. I‘d I had some raven friends I would definitely want them to stay :) 4w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ElizaMarie Yep, that‘d be me too 4w
ElizaMarie @TheBookHippie I haven‘t really looked into his other books. Does he stick with Ravens or explores other animals? (Also the fact that he does some of these experiments in VT - which is where I live now - is also cool because I can envision his life more). 4w
TheBookHippie @ElizaMarie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa we have a chipmunk -squirrel -cardinal bunny and a red fox I named and do backstories for. Our crows are fun in winter … ice on bird baths they make loud noises come to my window and squawk! 4w
Chelsea.Poole Yes the narration! I have a library book of this now so that‘s helping, but I‘ve tried twice to get caught up today and literally fell asleep both times to his voice 😆 😴 but I do think it‘s all very interesting! 4w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheBookHippie he also has one about bees, which might be good after I read the section about bees (I‘m a bit ahead and I can‘t remember if it was in the section we read or the next). 4w
TheBookHippie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ohhh well now I need that too! That looks fascinating as well. 4w
Hooked_on_books I‘m continuing to really enjoy this book. Learning about the pair bonding and the switch-ups when new ravens were introduced was fascinating. I also liked the brief discussion of the fact that maybe they aren‘t as monogamous as we thought. Plus the egg experiments were really interesting. It‘s amazing how different species of the same animal grouping evolved so differently. 4w
Chelsea.Poole @Hooked_on_books I just read those sections about the mating behaviors and eggs. Sad to hear about Hootie, but at least her chicks ended up taken care of by some unsuspecting new parents lol! His observations of these parents (some seemed to notice, others not) makes me wonder, as I often do, how much humans can understand about animal behavior and experiences. 4w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Chelsea.Poole And how much is humans interpreting their behavior different based on the human and our feelings. 😂 (edited) 4w

Nick Hunt provides a beautifully described journey around Europe's less familiar landscapes. He covers natural history, ecology, folklore, history and travel writing. His writing is evocative of the landscape, weather and conditions that you feel like you're following in his footsteps. A hugely enjoyable book.

BookwormAHN I think I'm going to try the audiobook version 😺 1mo
nanuska_153 Can't wait to start this cause my best friend said that the way the characters of the book talk reminds her of our friendship and I'm not sure if it's something good or is bad and she is not my friend anymore and I just didn't get the reference xD 1mo
AllDebooks @nanuska_153 wow, that's an insight you could maybe do without!! 🫣 🤞it's positive. I hope it doesn't distract you from the story x 1mo
AllDebooks @BookwormAHN I think I'm going to skip between both audio and book, just to maximise reading opportunities 😅 1mo

CaitZ I'm so far behind I think I'll just stick with the Raven book, too 1mo
tdrosebud I'm also behind and will just be sticking with Raven for now. Thanks 1mo
SamAnne I have books piled up and will need to pass. But I‘ve read Silent Spring, am very familiar with her life and have been an environmental activist for decades. Will definitely follow along with the posts and might chime in! Also I‘m very interested in what Littens think about this bio based on the Goodreads reviews. 1mo
AllDebooks @CaitZ @tdrosebud @SamAnne noted 👍 thanks for letting me know, does make life easier with the tagging x 1mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘ll be behind, my library hasn‘t got my hold in from their sister library yet, but I‘ll be participating as soon as I get it. 👍❤️ 1mo
TheBookHippie One more chapter I‘m caught up with Raven and I do love it. Still waiting on my Rachel book ugh slow library! I‘m loving these reads ! So keep me on. 1mo
Yuki_Onna @AllDebooks Hey dear, please take me off the tag list. Sorry, I can't fit as much time for reading into my life atm as planned. If that changes, I'll inform you and ask to be readded to the list.
For now, I must make do with browsing through all the #Naturalitsy posts which give me great joy😊

Yuki_Onna @AllDebooks Thank you so much for these sweet words!😊 1mo
rockpools @SamAnne That sounds ominous! (I haven‘t started yet) 1mo
SamAnne @rockpools If I wasn't so behind on other group reads I would definitely listen to this one! Some of the issues brought up in Goodreads should make for really good discussions. One of those issues being how the author “handles“ the long term romantic relationship she had with another woman. 1mo
AllDebooks @SamAnne oh my, this is gonna be a good one 1mo
SamAnne @AllDebooks the reviews are all over the place! Personally, I love book club discussions where there are many viewpoints and lots of discussion items! 1mo

Cazxxx I can‘t get a copy of the book so I‘m having to stick to the audible version and the narration is just awful! Lots of interesting information but the narrator is so dry that he‘s making it very boring 1mo
Cuilin Do you have a set list of books you‘re reading or pick as you go along? I‘m definitely interested. I looked at the Waterstone list you posted and there were some interesting books I added to my wishlist. (edited) 1mo
Aimeesue I really liked chapter 5, both the stealing of ladies' underwear and the explanation of why ravens are so curious about everything, as it leads to discovery of new foods. Or just fancy bling 💎 1mo
ElizaMarie @Cazxxx So, I am in the same boat as you are. I am enjoying the story but... its hard to listen to for longer periods of time because... ugh! anyway, he is a bit rough! --- I am behind! 1mo
ElizaMarie So I am behind- But I am at the part where he is talking about the birdies stealing things (lady's undies) and it reminded me of this story :

AllDebooks @Cuilin *months on recommendations on a specific theme. I'll be posting for April's selection soon. We also have a bingo challenge running if you're interested. https://litsy.com/p/MGRZM2RkdjY3 1mo
AllDebooks @ElizaMarie 🤣🤣🤣 that is hilarious. 1mo
AllDebooks I honestly think this is the worst narration I've ever heard. As you say @cazxxx the information is fascinating but it's so hard to focus when it's being read out as drily as it is. 1mo
daena @Cazxxx @AllDebooks @ElizaMarie same sentiment here. Great story, but gosh that man‘s voice is torture. 1mo
jlhammar Wow, you all are making me thankful that I didn't go with audio this time. I also enjoyed the section about raven curiosity and collecting tendencies. I liked the Icelandic Golf Championship story. How they had to move to another course because ravens crashed the tournament, flying off with unattended golf balls. Overall, I'm still finding it very interesting and am enjoying following his field experiments and research. 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m enjoying this one…and I‘m listening to the audiobook 😂 he is dry at times, so I have to pay more attention to not drift off with my focus, but it‘s not that bad (at least I didn‘t think so). Hoopla, by the way, has the audiobook and ebook if you library supports that app. I thought the visit where he had to learn a new way of climbing trees was very interesting, by bow & arrow & rope ladders. The stealing pretty babbles was good too.⤵️ (edited) 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ I can‘t help but appreciate the dedication as he works double teaching loads one semester to take off the next to traipse out through and lay in cold dripping snow to try and capture and tag birds….and laugh as they somehow continually evade and outsmart the traps. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m absolutely loving this book! And I find it so Interesting that he‘s a terrible audio narrator, because the voice of the book is super engaging and it‘s the same guy! Just goes to show. I liked seeing a little of the “behind the scenes” of the scientific process. It sounds like it could be incredibly tedious, but it‘s also nice to see that it‘s not always smooth sailing. Plus, having to outsmart the birds just to tag them is fun. 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m curious what we‘ll find out as we go into the next section and explore the social groupings he has gotten hints of as this section wraps up. (edited) 1mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m still loving this one. I too am reading a physical copy and am surprised that his voice in audio is not as engaging as his tone in writing. The undies bit made me laugh out loud, as did the research groups humorous anthropomorphizing of the drama with the three ravens. The tree climbing technique with the rope ladder sounds terrifying. Hats off to the people involved with all this research! 1mo
TheBookHippie @ElizaMarie 🤣👏🏼👏🏼 1mo
TheBookHippie I adore this book! 1mo

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Unfortunately I fell out of love with the book the further I got. The first few chapters, the tangents seemed to make sense, but with the last few I had to fight the urge to skim for the word “seahorse” and just read those parts. The aquarium chapter irked me the most, I didn‘t need the entire history of aquariums to be told in the end not many people keep seahorses because they‘re such finicky pets. 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
Soubhiville I agree with @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm . I skimmed a lot of the last two chapters. I didn‘t hate the book, but it wasn‘t what I hoped for. It did peak my curiosity about seahorses, and I spent a good deal of time on Google looking at photos of them, even went so far as looking at captive bred for aquarium just to see. I feel like the seahorse info was interesting, just wasn‘t enough of it. 1mo
Cazxxx I agree with the others that there just wasn‘t enough info about seahorses, the author went off into other subjects which had me bored in a few places. The seahorse information was interesting but it could have been summed up in a few pages rather than trying to pad out a book with lots of useless information I ended up watching documentaries on seahorses which were very interesting and I feel I learned more from them 1mo
jlhammar I ultimately did like this little book, but not nearly as much as I was expecting to based on the first couple of chapters. I liked the part in Ch5 about the Victorian era natural history/collecting craze. “Trains returning from the coast in the mid-1800s must surely have been soaked in the stench of day-old seaside, with passengers clutching jam jars of sea life and slopping pails of water as they headed off to create their own oceans at home.“ 1mo
jlhammar And when I came to Chapter Six, Why Seahorses Matter, I had just been wondering that very thing! I feel like she didn't really answer that question until the epilogue though and it was an interesting answer. That they matter simply for the wonder and miracle that they are and that we should care because what is good for the seahorse is good for the health of the oceans. I thought maybe we'd learn that they were integral to the ecosystem somehow. 1mo
AllDebooks I completely agree. I was disappointed on the content in later chapters. I was particularly disappointed in the last chapter. It seemed void of any hope for their future. I was expecting to really enjoy this, but it didn't live up to the promise of the first 2 chapters 1mo
TheBookHippie I think it made me look up and try to find as much seahorse info as possible. I agree with you all that it should have been so much more. However glad I read it because now I am truly looking for a good seahorse book! 😬😵‍💫👀🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Graywacke @jlhammar the epilogue was really nice. Maybe the best part of the book. 🙂 1mo
Graywacke I agree with all these posts. The word that comes to mind, even if it doesn‘t fit, is “unprofessional”. Not just the writing, but the whole concept. Scales is a marine biologist who can write, but she‘s not a seahorse expert or special prose writer. Why was she writing this book? Why was there so little information on seahorses? Why was the writing allowed to get so carried away off course? 1mo
Graywacke Having said that, i found the history of aquariums, and collecting and underwater photography interesting. (Why did he kill that poor shark?) And @AllDebooks i really enjoyed the buddyread aspect. Thanks for setting up and leading. 1mo
Aimeesue I enjoyed it, but I can see why some didn't. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure there *is* much to the biology of seahorses -they stay in a very small area all their lives, we know how they reproduce, their lifespans, they're not having massive die-offs of unknown origin, etc. But I'm always much more interested in the ways humans interact with a species anyway, or how changes we make affect them, and why that matters. They're pretty little guys! (edited) 1mo
Aimeesue I liked the part about Gerald Durrell trying to keep some on Corfu, schlepping fresh seawater to them 5X a day. ? I was also super interested in the bit about Painlevé's film and all the effort it took to film them. There's a piece of it here: https://mubi.com/films/the-sea-horse/trailer (edited) 1mo
Hooked_on_books I think the failing of this book is that it purports to be about seahorses when it‘s about people. If the title/subtitle/cover was more reflective of the content, it would have been more successful as a book. But given that it wasn‘t, it didn‘t meet my expectations. I did find interesting info in it, though. Apparently there‘s a seahorse farm for aquarists on my island, but it‘s $75/person to tour it. No way! 1mo
Graywacke @Hooked_on_books I wonder what her working title was 1mo
Hooked_on_books @Graywacke I‘d be curious to know that, too. If they‘d gone with something suggesting how humans have incorporated seahorses into their lives, it would have made things so much clearer, I feel. 1mo
Aimeesue @Hooked_on_books "Poseidon's Steed: The Story of Seahorses, From Myth to Reality" kind of incorporates the mythological/poetic/ arty view of them, doesn't it? Or did it have different titles in different countries/markets/languages? 1mo
AllDebooks @Graywacke glad you enjoyed it. 1mo
Hooked_on_books That‘s the US title. But it‘s not the story of seahorses at all, is it? It‘s the story of humans and how we‘ve interacted with seahorses. The book centers humans, not seahorses, and I feel the title should do the same to adequately reflect the contents, but instead it centers seahorses, which is misleading. @Aimeesue (edited) 1mo
Aimeesue @Hooked_on_books Interesting. I guess I never thought of it that way. Thanks for the explanation! 1mo

#Book2Book

I'm having a book cull 🫣 and usually give them to charity, tried selling online & it's not worth the hassle. So, I've been thinking about our wonderful Litten community.
I was thinking of setting up an online event to swap our unwanted* books. Would anyone be interested in this? My idea is to donate the book, with the recipient covering p & p (via Paypal).
This is just a test for response before I get busy planning.
Thoughts? 🤔😊

AllDebooks *NB - I appreciate this is an older publication, so may be difficult to access. I can't get hold of a copy, so I'm listening to the audiobook on Scribd. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m loving the book so far! I like the writing style and the content is just fascinating. I was a little worried at first that he was going to draw inaccurate conclusions based on the way he was constructing his experiments, but I don‘t think that‘s happening. And I cannot believe how much baby ravens eat! Holy cannoli! They‘re really fascinating birds. 1mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Definitely enjoying this one a lot. The pipe cleaner gag had me worried at first, but he seemed to have been very careful and fed them every time he removed them. I thoroughly enjoyed the bit about the two birds living within families, especially the “marital problems” one man had with his raven. 🤣 The experiments are well explained and absolutely fascinating. I‘m looking forward to learning more about these amazing birds. 1mo
Chelsea.Poole I‘m listening to the audiobook (available on #hoopla) and it‘s not the best narration from the author, imo. I may switch to the physical book when it comes in from the library. Though his narration is lacking, the author‘s dedication to these birds is admirable! 1mo
Soubhiville I‘ll be joining with the audiobook closer to the end of the readalong and will go back to all the comment threads then 🙂. 1mo
AllDebooks @Chelsea.Poole I agree, I'm struggling with his narration. Very flat and mundane, yet, he's so passionate about the birds. Tbh, it reminds me of those old Disney true lufe adventures. Very dated. I really need to get hold of a physical copy 1mo
AllDebooks @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm the marital problems 🤣 The birds are providing endless stimulation and enjoyment of their antics 1mo
ElizaMarie The pandemic would have been the perfect time to raise baby Ravens :) I am enjoying this book and love just the little attitudes of the ravens he has met 1mo
wanderinglynn I‘m not crazy about his writing style. It‘s dry and a bit too academic for my taste. But beyond that I struggle with him capturing ravens from their nest in the wild to raise, as well as starving a wild raven for two days for his experiment. 1mo
wanderinglynn @AllDebooks ironically, my library had this book but doesn‘t have Poseidon‘s Steed. 🤷🏼‍♀️😆 1mo
sebrittainclark @wanderinglynn I also found the description of him removing the ravens from their nest, as well as the trick with the pipe cleaners, fairly upsetting, even if it is for scientific understanding and didn't do lasting harm to the ravens. 1mo
jlhammar @Hooked_on_books I am also loving it so far! I knew some about the brilliance of corvids from The Ravenmaster and The Genius of Birds, but I am happy to learn more. His observations are so fascinating. The print book has photos and sketches throughout so I'm glad I was able to get a copy. 1mo
AllDebooks I've just found a cheaper copy on Abebooks, think I'll enjoy iy a lot more in print. 1mo
BookwormAHN I agree the audio version is dry but other than that I'm enjoying it. I'm not sure why anyone would want a raven inside their house though 😸 1mo
Aimeesue Merlin. I loved Merlin. ❤️ Corvids are the best. I have some crows that follow me around when I walk the dogs (because I toss them peanuts.) They are so funny. And SMART. I was amused then the author rehomed the robin's egg he'd found in one of the babies' gullets. I probably wouldn't have thought of putting it in my mouth for the climb down (edited) 1mo
CaitZ I agree with @wanderinglynn and @sebrittainclark and do not like some of his methods, especially when he removed the chicks from the nest. There must have been a better way. 1mo
AllDebooks I agree re his methods. They do seem very old school and reminiscent of his youth when egg collection and nest raids were acceptable. I didn't like these sections at all. 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Chelsea.Poole Hoopla has the audiobook and the ebook, if that helps… I borrowed both 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just finished this section today, so I‘m a bit behind…I agree with everything you‘ve all said. As far as stealing the baby ravens, I couldn‘t help but think of Jurassic Park 2 and think the parents might be after him later 😂 sorry, but he might have deserved it. I did not like the pipe cleaner bit at all… made me very uncomfortable. (edited) 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Aimeesue My thought about the robin egg… he put it in his mouth, after it had been in the baby ravens throat, and to get there whole, was probably in the parent ravens throat too. 🤔😬🫣 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CaitZ @AllDebooks yes, I agree with the very old school… today it‘s live cams in the nest area that you can watch 24/7 from any computer…like the bald eagle cams where you can watch them from egg to fledgling to fly away. So much is changing. 1mo
Aimeesue @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Doesnt sound very hygienic, does it? 😂 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Aimeesue Well, if nothing else it means the egg stayed warm enough when it‘s parent wasn‘t brooding it 🤣 1mo

Soubhiville I had lots of mixed feelings About chapter 3. On one hand TCM is fascinating to me, and I‘ve had great results with acupuncture. On another, who decided ages ago that certain animals would be medicinal? It makes me angry that enough still want these treatments that use endangered species. Overall parts of this chapter dragged terribly, but I still found it worth reading. 1mo
See All 20 Comments
Soubhiville Chapter 4 was more interesting but also sad. The traditional lantern fishing was neat to read about, reminding me of other “natural” fishing practices I‘ve read about. Still crazy to me that anyone wants to consume seahorses for any reason. I‘ve read other books about coral reef devastation, so wasn‘t surprised about the bombs/ trawling. So sad though. 1mo
Soubhiville I loved flipping through the photo section too. I wasn‘t aware how many species of seahorse there are. I want to spend some time on Google to see these little friends in color. Maybe try to find a photography book about them. Anyone have recommendations? 1mo
TheBookHippie @Soubhiville I had the same thoughts about a photography book! I hope there is one!!! I so loathe the medicinal thing with animals and the superstition more so many animals killed for no reason it breaks my heart. 1mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I agree with @Soubhiville about some parts dragging in this weeks chapters. I appreciated the author giving a full background story about why traditional medicine and ways of life can‘t just be swept under the rug as though completely invalid. It shows that she understands there‘s nuance to life. We can‘t just impose our beliefs on others, but we all still have a responsibility to the planet and our fellow creatures. I hope we can all find the ⬇️ 1mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm right balance before it‘s too late. 1mo
TheBookHippie I‘m learning so the parts that seem tedious to read are still rewarding to me. These have always fascinated me and I‘m quite happy to glean the parts I want to know and leave the rest on the page. 🙃 it‘s so fascinating these little creatures, I love them so. I‘m so happy we‘re reading this. 1mo
AllDebooks I really struggled to reconcile her suggestion for research into efficacy of TCM. I found this chapter very conflicting, emotionally, for reasons mentioned above @Soubhiville @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I'm glad to have read and understood more about TCM but did find it a difficult chapter. 1mo
AllDebooks https://youtu.be/xIS_2_A-_Ko I'm in love with sea dragons 🐉 1mo
jlhammar I did find these chapters a bit drier than the first two, but I'm learning a lot so still glad to be reading this. The part in Chapter 3 that really got to me was the decimation of the saiga population after the number of rhinos plummeted. I was shocked and saddened at just how quickly that happened (one million saiga alive in the 1990s to around only 30,000, mostly females, left at the time the book was written). 1mo
jlhammar And just to learn more about the practice of trawling in Chapter 4 was very upsetting. I mean, I knew a little about it before, but I found her “equivalent to trawling on land“ on page 112 so effective. Oh, and when she mentions that dried seahorses can even be sought after for something as ridiculous (in my opinion) as a see-through toilet seat! I was also quite surprised to learn that the seahorse trade increases by around 10% every year. 1mo
Hooked_on_books Honestly, I‘m a little frustrated with this book. Other than chapter 2, it‘s not about seahorses at all, but about people. And it goes off topic quite a bit. I didn‘t find chapter 3 terribly interesting; chapter 4 worked much better for me. Still not about seahorses, but reading about all the fishing techniques was fascinating. How horrible that the devastation wrecked by trawling can be seen from space! 1mo
Aimeesue I admit I found ch 3 a bit of a slog, but I think the background information paid off. It was very clear that there have been attempts to "modernize" past TCM and, given lack of access to other therapies, the social norms + relative income, TCM is not going away, and species like seahorses are going to be in high demand for the foreseeable future. It did not leave me hopeful, but here we are. ☹️ 1mo
Aimeesue Ch 4 was interesting, although it made me want to swear off shrimp. I liked the parts about attempts to reduce "bycatch" by putting flaps in the nets. Clever. Trawling seems barbaric, and I thought the image of a hunter trying that on land to catch squirrels was really effective. My daughter is a park ranger, and we found that description both easy to imagine and horrifying. 1mo
Graywacke @Hooked_on_books I‘m a disappointed by the lack of seahorse info too. 1mo
Graywacke I didn‘t like either chapter. I didn‘t like chapter 3 because (1) i never had buy-in to read about TCM. And (2) the seahorse part could have been covered in one sentence. I didn‘t like chapter 4 because it was just a fact dump and i find that irritating because there is no way I‘m going to take any of that in. But mainly I came to learn about marine life. I got a lecture on environmentally criminal shrimp fishing, but not much on marine life. (edited) 1mo
AmandaBlaze I didn't people were using them as medicine or talismans. I haven''t through Chapter 4 as I just got the book today. The writing style can be a little long-time ed at points, but I'm OK with it. 1mo

It's so funny rereading these classics that left such a mark on me when I initially read them in my teens/20s. I do enjoy revisiting old favourites. Did I realise how awfully snobbish these characters were back then, I wonder? 🤔

#Naturalitsy

Following on my review of the tagged, I thought I'd share other books I used with my own children and in my job. These are great for ideas, inspiration, and conversations on how to get children engaged with their natural world and environment.

This an enjoyable, thoughtful musing on the importance of nature in all our lives, with particular emphasis on the need for our children to explore, examine, & question the natural world around them. Smyth slips between stories of his childhood, to those of his two young children. His writing style meanders between past & present. While some may find this erratic, I enjoyed following his thought process and interpretation of his experiences.

Small: On motherhoods | Claire Lynch

Pickpick

This is a truly special, crucial book. Claire Lynch is able to portray her family life, as both she & her wife try for a baby. She does this through incredibly moving, funny & astute poetry and prosaic writing. The constant thread throughout is of love & compassion, particularly when dealing with loss, miscarriage, & grief. I hope it brings much comfort and understanding on such deeply emotional circumstances.
Highly recommended.

Wonderful, relaxing drift down the Camlin river with 2 friends as they discover their mutual love of the natural world and their deep connections to the land.
