NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POSTLook for special features inside. Join the Random House Readers Circle for author chats and more.Theauthor of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, and Shanghai Girls has garnered international acclaim for her great skill at rendering the intricate relationships of women and the complex meeting of history and fate. Now comes Lisa Sees highly anticipated new novel, China Dolls. Its 1938 in San Francisco: a worlds fair is preparing to open on Treasure Island, a war is brewing overseas, and the city is alive with possibilities. Grace, Helen, and Ruby, three young women from very different backgrounds, meet by chance at the exclusive and glamorous Forbidden City nightclub. Grace Lee, an American-born Chinese girl, has fled the Midwest with nothing but heartache, talent, and a pair of dancing shoes. Helen Fong lives with her extended family in Chinatown, where her traditional parents insist that she guard her reputation like a piece of jade. The stunning Ruby Tom challenges the boundaries of convention at every turn with her defiant attitude and no-holds-barred ambition. The girls become fast friends, relying on one another through unexpected challenges and shifting fortunes. When their dark secrets are exposed and the invisible thread of fate binds them even tighter, they find the strength and resilience to reach for their dreams. Pickpick

Finished this one for #authoramonth earlier this week. I‘m giving it a low pick because I cared just enough to find out what happened. However, it‘s my least favorite of See‘s books so far.

Ruby, Grace and Helen are thrown together at their audition to be dancers at the Forbidden City. We follow their careers through the book as they are friends, enemies and generally make bad choices informed by past hardships they‘ve endured. ⬇️

MeganAnn I did enjoy the parts that looked at being a Chinese or Asian performer during the 30s-50s. And I liked the glamour of the Forbidden City and other nightclubs. But the main characters weren‘t particularly like able and we didn‘t really know why they made some of their choices (especially those that hurt each other) until the end. See‘s other works had me connecting with and feeling for the characters, while this one never fully got there. 2y
MeganAnn Looking forward to discussing this more with the #literarycrew @Librarybelle 2y

Bailedbailed

Unfortunately I‘m going to bail on this month‘s book for #literarycrew and #authoramonth. I don‘t have time to read the book right now but was listening on my commute. I‘m over an hour in on the audio and I can‘t differentiate the characters/povs. I think it‘s because the narrator isn‘t differentiating their voices. I‘ll be back for both next month.

Librarybelle It‘s hard when the narrator does not differentiate the characters! Thanks for trying this one! 2y
Soubhiville I couldn‘t get though this one either. 2y
Soubhiville I‘ve listened to a couple of John Boyne‘s books on audio and they were great, so hopefully you‘ll have better luck next month. 😊 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am almost done with my current audiobook and was scrolling through what's available by See at the library. Thank you for narrowing down my choices! 😁 2y
BethM I bailed on this too. The audio was not amazing and I didn‘t care about the characters. 2y

Bailedbailed

At halfway I didn‘t really see the point of the book. All three main characters are stuck in repeating patterns of self destructive behaviors. The plot isn‘t really compelling. Putting it down for now. I‘m disappointed because I usually really like Lisa See but this one doesn‘t seem up to her usual standard. Maybe a case of wrong book/wrong time. #AuthorAMonth

AmyG I just bailed on two of her books. She is just not for me. ☹️ (edited) 2y
Soubhiville @AmyG I love your new picture! 💕 2y

I finished this one yesterday for #AuthorAMonth #LiteraryCrew #Booked2022 @Librarybelle @Soubhiville

I did like it, and I learned some things, but I felt like it was too long. The end was strange to me. I was also reading another by the same author at the same time - not recommended. I listened on audio and liked the narrator, but I sometimes had trouble telling the characters apart with her voices.

Librarybelle I haven‘t had a chance to start yet but plan to this weekend! 2y
Soubhiville I‘m about to pick this one up too. 2y
megnews I‘m listening on audio and 3 minutes in to the second chapter I had to say “wait this is a different character” and go back to understand. She doesn‘t narrate in a different voice and so far it makes it difficult to follow. Will have to pay close attention and hope it gets better. 2y
Kangaj1 @megnews I had to keep checking my phone as the chapter title tells the POV. However, if the characters are having a conversation, it gets really confusing. 2y

This was January‘s FOTL book club read. I snagged it on Libby because I was afraid I‘d not get to it otherwise this month. I‘m really glad I made time for it! The story, set predominantly from the end of the Depression through the years of WWII, follows three young Asian women as they navigate life as nightclub performers with sexism, racism, and familial cultural responsibility weighing them each down in their own way. Unique period fiction!

I really liked this! I have to admit, I liked Grace best of the three girls, and I found her story the most interesting. The book is told in alternating chapters from each of the girls‘ points of view. Each chapter is titled with the girl‘s name, so I was able to follow this quite easily. It was really interesting to learn about the Chinese entertainers from the time period.

This was a really good read about three Asian-American young women who go through national struggles and more personal struggles than people their age should go through. I didn‘t think I would like this one, but it was engaging, the characters were developed and the plots were engaging.
