Crow Boy | Taro Yashima

2 ⭐ This book does not age well. For 1955 it is a great example of “own voices” but by today‘s standards this book would be considered racist, ablest, and a host of other things. We do not even get to know Crow Boy‘s name. Throughout the book he is called Chibi (Tiny one in Japanese), but no real name. ⬇

I read outdoors last night. Casey chewed his stick. We were both content.

Except for how this really isn‘t Jenny Colgan‘s best. The bones are decent and I think the characters could develop well across the series, but there‘s a ton of fatphobia and the persistent notion that any progressive idea for schools must also be a ridiculous idea. I‘ll give the next one a try, but I‘ll only look forward to #3 if there‘s some real character growth.

I have read Jenny Colgan‘s books before. This wasn‘t my favorite of her books. It was okay.

This was between a pick and a pan. It checks all boxes for a sweet English girl‘s boarding school series. However… 14 yo girls can be mean to a plus-sized classmate - I get it as a plot line in this type of story. I don‘t get the teacher thinking Simone could be pretty if she lost weight - ugh! I don‘t get the narrator often describing Simone‘s food consumption - bigger ugh. The fat-shaming just came from too many directions.

LOOKING FOR RECOMMENDATIONS. It‘s literally been years since I‘ve posted anything, but I‘m home sick and looking for something to binge read. Here are some in my TBR, but I also have a kindle and an Overdrive account so open to any and all suggestions.

LiteraryinLawrence Hi again! Of the ones pictured I‘m a big fan of The Little Prince. But overall one of my favorite books of the last couple years was The House in the Cerulean Sea! 3mo
Amiable That Wally Lamb book is one of my all-time favorites! I‘ve read it multiple times. It‘s so good. And the Henrietta Lacks book is phenomenal if you are in the mood for NF. 3mo
DivineDiana I recommend Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows. Much better than that title! #strongwomen Feel better! (edited) 3mo

BookNerd9906 @LiteraryinLawrence @Amiable @Alfoster thank you so much for your input. The Little Prince is short so I powered through that, and now I‘m tackling the Wally Lamb chunkster. I‘ll have no shortage of binge reading while home sick. 3mo
BookNerd9906 @DivineDiana thanks for the recommendation it‘s next on my TBR 3mo

Pickpick

For #thebigjubileeread for the decade 1952-61 I chose this novel published 1959 ER Braithwaite an author from Guyana. I confess I have not see the movie this book inspired however that doesn‘t take away from this amazing story! Truly, should be required reading. So much to learn from this story. #readingchallange2022

TheBookHippie Was required reading for my high school honors English it was considered a NEW classic. 4mo
KristiAhlers @TheBookHippie oh I‘m glad! If more people read books like this. The more they would understand I‘d hope. This one truly spoke to me. 4mo
TheBookHippie @KristiAhlers it‘s still required here for some schools. I read it four decades ago 🤯. 4mo

KristiAhlers @TheBookHippie yeah I graduated in ‘87 and my honors/AP English class only focused on Shakespeare. Only play if his we didn‘t read was A Midsummers Night Dream. Anything normal kids read in school I‘ve picked up on my own. To say I‘m salty at how much I‘ve missed is an understatement 4mo
mcctrish This is the only book I‘ve read from that decade ❤️❤️ of the challenge 4mo
KristiAhlers @mcctrish I can totally understand that! I may quit while I‘m ahead for that decade! 4mo
