Third book of the #NeapolitanianQuartet is done ✔️! It‘s neither very dramatic nor full of action, but you really get to follow these two women through every stage of their life, both with good & bad decisions, and I really love it.

I have finished 2 / 4 of the Neapolitan Quartet by #ElenaFerrante and I really like it. I like that the narrative clearly takes its time and that we get to know our two main characters, Lenu & Lila, very intimately. Yesterday, book 3 & 4 arrived, so I‘m fully stacked now!

The #WomensPrize shortlist is out! What do you all think? I‘m really disappointed that #RemoteSympathy didn‘t make it, I enjoyed it the most. #TheSentence is also great, and #GreatCircle is definitely a masterpiece, although I didn‘t enjoy it as much as I hoped it would. #TheBreadtheDevilKnead is also not to my taste. I haven‘t read the others.

#bookprize #bookawards #shortlist

squirrelbrain I got 3 right on my list, although I‘m claiming 4 as the Shafak was 7th on my list! I too am disappointed about Remote Sympathy. My least fave on the shortlist is the Ozeki, I just didn‘t love it. (edited) 4w
TrishB I didn‘t even finish Remote Sympathy! Need to read some more though as only read 2 on shortlist. 4w
jlhammar I'm pretty pleased with it. Four of the six I was hoping to see here made it. The only one I haven't read here is The Bread the Devil Knead so planning to give that one a try before the winner is announced. I agree, it's a shame Remote Sympathy didn't advance. I would have swapped Great Circle for Remote Sympathy or Build Your House Around My Body. 4w

thewallflower0707 @TheKidUpstairs Smart Choice, though I would really recommend adding Remote Sympathy to the list too! I thought it was very special. 3w
thewallflower0707 @Squirrel oh no, Ozeki sounds cool, why didn‘t you like it? I definitely want to read Shafak‘s book! 3w
thewallflower0707 @JillR Definitely, treat yourself! 3w
TrishB I didn‘t like the writing style or the characters- thought Greta just came across really stupid and naive. It generally came across really unbelievable. I did give it 150 pages but I guess it wasn‘t for me. 3w

I read this because I‘m getting #MyBrilliantFriend for Easter 🐣 and Olivia Coleman can do no wrong.

I didn‘t expect it to be so dark! It‘s about a mother who left her children for 3 years, used that time to really become a person again and doesn‘t regret it. This topic is still a big taboo, so I‘m glad it was used here.

Please don‘t support this author, don‘t read this book in class, don‘t buy it for your children. The Auschwitz Memorial Museum on Twitter has heavily criticized it.

“The UCL study concluded that the book‘s use in schools helped to foster “an inaccurate perception of German ignorance of the Holocaust.”

JenlovesJT47 I hated this book but liked the movie. I can‘t remember how old the main boy character is supposed to be but in the book he had the mentality of a 2-year-old and it just really bothered me. 1mo
thewallflower0707 @JenlovesJT47 The worst thing for me as a German is, that Bruno should be completely indoctrinated into hating Jewish people. It also spreads the lie that the normal population didn‘t know about the camp and what was going on. This book helps Holocaust denial. 1mo
JenlovesJT47 @thewallflower0707 that makes a lot of sense. Would have made the story better if Bruno was indoctrinated but became friends with him anyway. It‘s been ages since I‘ve seen the movie and the whole thing is just so sad. I‘ve read so many WWII books. Do you have any recommendations for good WWII historical fiction? 1mo
See All 7 Comments
thewallflower0707 @JenlovesJT47 I really recommend testimonials of survivors: Night by Eli Wiesel, If this is a man by Primo Levi, The Twins of Auschwitz by Eva M Kor. The Light in Hidden Places is for younger readers and based on a real story. For a better view into German minds at that time, try Remote Sympathy and The Book Thief. 1mo
thewallflower0707 @JenLovesTJ47 More Stories about survivors but not written as non-fiction, try: The Boy who followed his father into Auschwitz, The Klara Witzel Story, The Sisters of Auschwitz, The Brothers of Auschwitz. For Non-Fiction: The Choice by Edith Eger (a magnificent author), The Light of Days (about Jewish resistance), The Nine Hundred. 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Thank you! Adding them all to my list 🤗 1mo
JenlovesJT47 The only one I‘ve read of these is The Book Thief and it‘s really good. Thank you again! Gonna start with the twins book. 1mo

This would have been better if we got multiple perspectives (e.g Tigris and Lucy Gray) or maybe even different timelines (e.g Snow at 18, when he rises to power and when he is president). What didn‘t help the book is the change in YA, nobody wants to read Dystopias anymore.

I would have loved a small chapter with Katniss & Peeta after the end of Mockingjay.
