This book is phenomenal. The focus is on the four roles of women in art - Venus, Mothers, Damsel in Distress & Monster - and talks about the historical & mythological background and modern connections and all with a detailed & feminist approach. An absolute delight and I learned a lot.

I simply had to read the book written by the person who made up the Miette meme („Jail for mother! Jail for a thousand years!“) 🐈‍⬛. The first half is funny & satirical, the second half is very sad. It‘s a short, but well-written roller coaster 🎢.

This started of beautifully, and then it devolved into a simple narration of Years, without ever focusing on any plot string. Characters came and went, I never cared about anything, because time would just jump another 5 years ahead and it would be different anyway.

3rd sign: Books are food and don‘t need a coronavirus test.

It‘s the time for rereading two of my old favourites!
1) #TheSongofAchilles

2) #Circe
I liked it a lot more than the 1st, maybe b/c I‘m 3 years older? Back then, the ending disappointed me, now, I find it very peaceful.

I read If we were villains by M.L.Rio on my train ride to and back from Usedom, an island between Germany & Poland. I wanted to look at the Ostsee, so I did this day trip. The novel is great, and I totally got some The Secret History vibe (which is why I read this after all).

Meh. This book really lost the plot after a strong beginning. I could not emphasize with Ariadne‘s fascination for Dionysius at all, the side plot with her sister fell flat and the ending left me disappointed.

I liked this book much more than The Silence of the Women, which I thought completely missed the mark of focusing on the women. This book also contained a lot more new storylines, and not just the Iliad plot rehashed.

The new #SallyRooney book #BeautifulWorldWhereAreYou had preorder numbers comparable to HP 7. I read #NormalPeople in 2017 and I struggled a lot, and I‘m thinking of trying it again now that I‘m a bit closer to the target group. I liked BWWAY because of the WILD conversations about communism, sex and authors. Hilarious. Rooney‘s style is still quite pretentious.

Ugh, I forgot how misogynistic this series is after the first book. There are allusions to rape, descriptions of child marriage & pregnancy, a lot of descriptions of torture & executions, and women are referred to as a „thing“. The female characters are relegated to the side lines and just accept their terrible lot. They moan and cry while the men fight. Meggie really deserved better!

#Inkheart #CorneliaFunke

julesG Sums up the issues I had with this series quite nicely. 2mo
thewallflower0707 @julesG and I‘m afraid Funke hasn‘t really improved 😬. Her new Reckless series is also very much focused on the male characters, though at least there is one female character with agency (Fuchs). I also wonder how much Inkheart & Reckless can really be described as literature for young adult since there is so much horrible stuff in it 2mo
julesG I haven't read anything else by Funke. I'd recon you can call it YA, with an age group of 14/15 year olds and upwards. Wouldn't consider it middle-grade though. Those are fairly horrible topics, but thinking about what I had to read in school at that age, I guess a younger YA audience can cope. 2mo

As I read the first ~30 pages, these were my thoughts:
1) these characters are pretentious a*holes
2) This could be really special, and I‘m kinda sad I only own it as an ebook

Following (2), I bought the paperback at the huge Hugendubel in Munich. I also bought Die nicht sterben, a modern Dracula retelling. I hope both of the books won‘t let me down 🤞.
