Stuck in traffic on the way home but I saw three rainbows that inspired today‘s haiku:

Spotted three rainbows

@Eggs (thanks for the tag! 😍)

1. When my eyes open every morning, and I see that I've been given another day on this precious planet, I'm inspirited to get my ass out of bed and enjoy it.

CatLass007 Sherlock Holmes‘s fear of being vulnerable and lonely is represented by his comments about Watson abandoning him to get married. The same loneliness faces Godfrey and his family. The family and their two trusted servants have isolated themselves from any community because they believe they have to protect Godfrey‘s “secret.” Solitude is great and being alone doesn‘t mean being lonely, but the self-isolation of this small group of people (cont)⬇️ 1mo
CatLass007 has brought loneliness to one and all. 1mo
Librarybelle Holmes sounds bitter when he mentions Watson choosing to marry and live with his wife, leaving Holmes all alone. It‘s like Holmes recognizes the importance of Watson in these cases, and he also brings in the doctor to help identify the disease, in essence showing he cannot do this on his own. The family, meanwhile, chooses to self-isolate rather than be piranhas in society. (edited) 1mo

Cuilin Absence makes the heart grow fonder and can lead to loneliness. James misses his friend Godfrey, Sherlock misses Watson, the family miss their “healthy” son. The butler misses the young Godfrey and Godfrey misses his life of inclusion. 1mo
dabbe @CatLass007 @Librarybelle @Cuilin ... W🤩WZA! All of your answers have #gobsmacked me! Just to add my 2 cents: Godfrey's literal confinement reflects the social fear of contagion and mirrors how society isolates those who are considered tainted.

The setting itself: The country estate is portrayed as secluded and gloomy, emphasizing the idea of separation from the outside world. ⬇️
1mo
dabbe @CatLass007 @Librarybelle @Cuilin The country estate is portrayed as secluded and gloomy, emphasizing the idea of separation from the outside world. The locked and hidden room where Godfrey is kept symbolizes how society sometimes “locks away” what it fears or does not understand.

Also, Godfrey's “blanched“ appearance may not only be due to his illness but could also be psychologically symbolic of the emotional toll of his isolation.

BooksandCoffee4Me Beautiful! I see them in the water ways in our farmland here, but never in trees. 😮💛 1mo
dabbe I would get in a car wreck because I would be totally #gobsmacked looking at them! 💛🐝🖤 1mo
Reggie Sooo good! 1mo
julieclair @BooksandCoffee4Me They spend their days in the waterways here, too. They only come to the trees towards evening. I read online that they like to spend their nights in trees/bushes because they‘re safer from predators if they‘re off the ground. That makes a lot of sense, since our alligators can‘t climb trees. (Although occasionally one does manage to climb up a few steps!) 1mo
julieclair @dabbe I often see people pulled to the side of the road looking at them! 1mo
DebinHawaii Wonderful! 💛🐝🖤I love the cattle egrets here too. I see them on the highway & in the neighborhood. I especially love it when they follow yard guys with leaf blowers single file to pick up insects & things they might stir up. Makes me smile! 1mo
julieclair @DebinHawaii That‘s a hoot about the yard guys! Smart birds! 1mo

I completed the Greater Charlotte Book crawl today. 22 independent bookstores and hundreds of miles of driving across 7 counties. I may have gone a little overboard and yes, I‘m still heading back to my favorite Indie for Independent Bookstore Day tomorrow. It was fun, but I don‘t think I‘ll do it again.

BookNAround Maybe I‘ll run into you there as I‘m planning on being there tomorrow too. 😁 2mo

@TheLudicReader
It FINALLY came! It was sent to EAST Virginia, not West. The people were out of town, just found it, and sent it to me. How lucky/cool is that? I adore the St. John calendar and still want so much to visit there and to meet you. Connor's print totally #gobsmacked me and made me 😭. What. A. Talent. Tell me exactly where that is that he drew! And your novel-letter, well, I can't wait to read it and will reply soon! I ❣️ you, m'dear.

#TLT #ThreeListThursday on Friday
Got the 2nd list done today! 3 is not enough 😄
God Of Small Things
Look Homeward Angel
Let The Great World Spin
The Jungle

dabbe And I haven't read any of your choices! More to go on the TBR! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 4mo
Leftcoastzen @dabbe I‘m happy ! There are many on those lists I mean to read , I have read Shakespeare but I forgot which ones ! The Jungle radicalized me in 6th grade. Sinclair wanted it to outrage people about treatment of workers . Teddy Roosevelt reacted more to the food safety elements. 4mo
dabbe @Leftcoastzen #gobsmacked that you read THE JUNGLE in 6th grade. It's on our 12 grade. list. 🤩 4mo
Suet624 God of small things and Let The Great World Spin are two favorites of mine. 4mo

Pogue @dabbe for Beowulf poetry, for Canterbury Tales I prefer it in Middle English. 5mo

New Survey: AP Literature Free Response Titles List #1 (1970-2024)
I really needed a list to take me totally away from the crapola of this week in the USA.
1. Survey link: https://www.listchallenges.com/litsy-ap-literature-free-response-titles-list-1
2. Share your score if you'd like.
3. Share your 3 favorites from the list or 3 that you might be interested in reading or a combo or whatever you'd like.
4. Tag a few!

dabbe I'll post my faves later, but for the record: I've only read 20 from this list. So many ones I still want to read! 🤩 5mo
Texreader That was fun. I‘ve read 11 and probably a few more, but I just can‘t remember. Easily my favorite was Dracula. 5mo
Bookwormjillk I‘ve read 19 I think, but high school was a long time ago so I‘m not 100% which Shakespeare plays I read and which I just saw. Loved Dracula and Cry, The Beloved Country blew me away when I read it in school. 5mo
See All 59 Comments
thebacklistbook 12. Mostly read for lit classes. 5mo
rwmg 21

I'm guessing this is a school reading list but I don't really know what AP classes are or what to expect from them.
5mo
LiseWorks I read only 8, but that's because I'm a Canadian, and our schools and universities have different books. Like where was most of Shakespeare stuff like Romeo and Juliette. 5mo
bthegood ❤️💙❤️ (edited) 5mo
PurpleyPumpkin I read 16 on this list and have many others on my tbr shelf. Many of these reads were from when I went to university. But I‘d like to get back to some of these. Thanks for posting!👍🏽 5mo
BookNAround I‘ve read 46 but I do have 2 English degrees and did take AP English way back in the day. I have quite a few of the newer (post my long ago schooling) books on my shelves tbr. Also, I have read other books by a bunch of the authors but not necessarily their works on the list. (edited) 5mo
Kar2b Only 6 for me. I haven‘t read All the Light We Cannot See yet, but I own it, so that‘ll take me to 7. 🤪 5mo
TheSpineView Thanks for the tag! 😍 5mo
Deblovestoread Thanks for the tag! 5mo
dabbe @Texreader Yes to DRACULA, too! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Still can't believe I've never read CRY. On the TBR! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
dabbe @thebacklistbook Same here. Or ones I had to teach! 😂 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
dabbe @rwmg AP stands for Advanced Placement, and it is a literature course where if seniors can pass the AP literature exam (where these titles come from), they don't have to take English 101/102 in college. These are titles that the College Board (the ones who created all AP courses) deems are “works of literary merit.“ Obviously, that thought is up for debate. Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
dabbe @LiseWorks Excellent point. Most titles are British and American, which is why those two subjects are taught in a lot of American high school courses. Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
dabbe @bthegood 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
dabbe @PurpleyPumpkin YW! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
dabbe @BookNAround #yahooyou! I knew you'd score higher than most--and you kicked my sorry English-teacher's ass! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo

dabbe @TheSpineView YW! 😘 5mo
dabbe @Deblovestoread YW! 😘 5mo
BkClubCare I checked 31 but not that many were from HS but the past decade plus when I wanted to read more classics 🌟 Always fun to look at book lists 😂 5mo
dabbe @BkClubCare I love book lists! It just makes the ol' TBR grow to infinity and beyond! 😂 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
LA1 Thanks for the tag! I‘m ranked #210, having read only 5 of the books. 😊 5mo
dabbe @LA1 I sure found quite a few to add to my TBR; how about you? 🤩 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 5mo
bibliothecarivs I don't read a lot of fiction so I've only read 4. But Don Quixote, Elmet, and Dancing at Lughnasa are on my to-read list. 5mo
dabbe @bibliothecarivs What type of nonfiction do you like? Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
TheLudicReader 17…not a great result. Lots of unfamiliar titles, too. 5mo
peaKnit Oof 9% 5mo
bibliothecarivs @dabbe I'm a nonfiction librarian and have wide interests but I usually read history, biography, autobiography, literary studies, cultural analysis, poetry, religion, nature & travel writing, and books about my favouite music, visual art, and films, with some politics, philosophy, science, and folklore sprinkled in. 5mo
dabbe @TheLudicReader Same here. Mostly American and British authors, too. Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
dabbe @peaKnit You're in good company! 😂 Any you want to add to your never-ending TBR? 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
dabbe @bibliothecarivs And I am #gobsmacked! 🤩 I would love to read more nonfiction, especially in history. Do you have anything to recommend for Tudor or 19th century British History or Colonial/Early American history? 5mo
KadaGul Thank you 🫶 for the tag 🏷️. #Hello2025 🍀💜🌅💙 5mo
Patchshank Thanks for the tag. I scored an 8 😂 5mo
WorldsOkayestStepMom Thanks for the tag! I have read 14 of them. 5mo
azulaco I scored 33. And actually I‘m embarrassed, because lots of these titles have been on my infinite TBR list for YEARS, so I should have read more of them. I did have a good high school and college education. A lot of the ones I read were assigned in class, or caught my interest after a related class discussion. I must admit that a couple, I‘ve only read excerpts of, so I kind of cheated. 5mo
bibliothecarivs @dabbe yes! The Five by Rubenhold and the English Reformation by Jones. Currently enjoying Tomalin's biography of Thomas Hardy (b. 1840). If you're willing to go a little outside of the Tudor period, Dan Jones's books Summer of Blood and The Plantagenets are excellent. 5mo
dabbe @KadaGul YW! 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
dabbe @Patchshank You're in good company; most of us scored under a 20! Thanks for playing and sharing! 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
dabbe @WorldsOkayestStepMom Yay you! Thanks for playing and sharing! 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
dabbe @azulaco I say if you “dabbled“ in a book, it counts! Most scored under 20, so yahoo you! Thanks for playing and sharing! 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
dabbe @bibliothecarivs I will look into all of these! Thank you so much for your help and expertise! 🤗 5mo
dabbe @bibliothecarivs Ooh, I love JtheR stuff! 🤩 5mo
DGRachel I managed a whopping 7. 😂 There were several others that I tried to read and bailed (glaring at Crime & Punishment) and a little sad at the number of authors I‘ve read, but haven‘t read the “right” book. I‘ve read a lot of Dickens and Cormac McCarthy, for instance. 😮‍💨 But also, I have to recommend a different translation of Beowulf. This one is 🤩 5mo
dabbe @DGRachel This survey only went through the letters A-C, so I bet your authors and other titles will be coming! And you're in good company; most of us scored 20 or under this time around. 😂 I'll have to check out your BEOWULF suggestion; thanks! Thanks also for playing and sharing. 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
DGRachel I truly hated Beowulf in high school, but Headley‘s translation was delightful (if you like modernizations). It literally had me howling with laughter. I highly recommend the audiobook. 5mo
dabbe @DGRachel Now on the TBR! 🤩🩵🤩 5mo
CogsOfEncouragement I‘ve read just 14 on the list. 5mo
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement You're in good company; most of us scored 20 or lower! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵🩶🩵 5mo
iread2much Only 6 for me 😅 5mo
dabbe @iread2much We're all in good company! Thanks for playing and sharing! 🩵🩶🩵 4mo
Cheryl_Russell Missed this last week. Just as well, 8/100. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4mo
dabbe @Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes You're in good company; most of us scored 20 or less! 🤩 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 4mo
Sleepswithbooks Only 7 😮 4mo
dabbe @Sleepswithbooks You're with the rest of us, m'dear! Most were between 1-20! I've added quite a few to my TBR. Doesn't mean I'll ever get to them, but still, a girl can dream ... 😂 Thanks for playing and sharing! 🩶🩷🩶 4mo
