IF you need something dark and long to dive into, this is my latest recommendation. But if the world feels pretty dark (not surprisingly), now isn‘t the time. I loved The Secret History decades ago and shouldn‘t have waited so long to read this one. So many genres and topics all deftly blended together. Tartt is a master of her craft.

Definitely not my usual thing but that‘s the joy of challenges! There‘s a secret magical library with a strange manipulative competition between the ‘Six‘. Too much world-building, magicy stuff for me, but I did enjoy following the chess-like moves and POVs of each of the six chosen to protect and learn at the library. I love a #DarkAcademia vibe, and the complexity of characters kept me engaged. No.2 of the #duology due in Oct. #pop22 #booked2022

Cinfhen Well done 👍🏻 2w
squirrelbrain Great review! I was going to read this one for this prompt, (I think @trishb recommended it - or at least C did! 🤣) but went with this instead… 2w
TrishB @squirrelbrain definitely C - it‘s one of her fave books. I have the special edition of the second one on order! 2w

Megabooks I‘ve been wondering what to do with the duology. Great review! 2w
KarenUK @Megabooks it‘s one the hardest challenges I think! Particularly when I‘m not a fantasy reader usually! So many duologies are in that genre. This was a #doubledip for two challenges, so I decided to give it a go! The audio is full cast and really well done. 2w
Cortg Way to keep an open mind! Congrats on finishing a non-favorite genre 🥳 2w
BarbaraBB It sounds fun! 2w

This gets mixed reviews on here, but I really liked it. Yes, the characters are all awful, but that‘s the whole point. I could quite easily see how the need to ‘fit in‘ could lead to some of the actions of these girls.

I‘m using this for #darkacademia for #booked2022.

Side-eye from Henry as it‘s raining today, so a day in the campervan reading…. He doesn‘t mind though, as he sits with his face pressed up to the heater!

Cinfhen So nice you‘re on one of your getaways!!! Hope the weather improves 💚 1mo
4thhouseontheleft That side eye is on point! 😂 1mo

squirrelbrain @MicheleinPhilly - he doesn‘t mind the rain at all. It‘s just me - could do without a soggy doggy in the van! 1mo
MicheleinPhilly I wish. We can have the lightest of sprinkles and Pickles puts on her protester hat. She REFUSES to go out. 🙄 1mo
Caroline2 Oh that face!!! 😆 bless him! 1mo

Started the Novik on audio this morning while batch-cooking a spaghetti bolognaise. It‘s for the witches prompt for #pop22and isn‘t my usual thing but I‘m loving it so far.

The other three are all to start. The Boyne is for #aam, and Dance Prone is for another #pop22 prompt ( about a band). Dear Reader sounds like a good book to read in the sunshine this afternoon!

Hope everyone has a good week!

TrishB My daughter just brought the Novik this week and I said I‘d never heard of it! (edited) 2mo

squirrelbrain There‘s a lot of mixed reviews @Megabooks so I‘m not sure how I‘ll get on with it….. 2mo
squirrelbrain It seems a bit YA to start with @TrishB , but enjoyable nonetheless. I *think* I may be able to use it for the #darkacademia prompt for #booked2022 as well. 2mo
TrishB She won‘t mind the YA. 2mo

The annual Trinity boy‘s prep school fundraiser involves selling chocolates. This year the school‘s secret society,The Vigils, is asked by Brother Leon to make certain it is a success. Sadistic Brother Leon has misappropriated school funds. New student Jerry Renault decides not to participate, and the school is in an uproar. #bullying #facultycorruption #bannedbook

Wow. This was an incredible retelling of the King Arthur legend. It started a bit slow for me, but then I couldn‘t stop reading. All the history, the pain, the magic….. SO good. This was my #bookspin (2 spots!). ♥️ And, I‘m going to count it as #darkacademia for #booked2022 😊

This month‘s book subscription box.

The book sounds like a perfect fit for #booked2022 #darkacademia. It gets mixed reviews on here but I can see that you liked it Holly @Hooked_on_books so that bodes well!

Also a cute blossom bookmark, some tea, Easter spice chocolate and a foot mask. 🦶

Oryx Book sounds good! 3mo
TrishB Lovely ♥️ 3mo
LeahBergen What a nice box! 3mo
Hooked_on_books It‘s a fun one! Lots of despicable people, which I always enjoy when it‘s done well. (I never understand the criticism of people not liking a book with unlikable characters. Sometimes those are the most interesting stories!) I hope you enjoy it! 3mo

Loved this one and can‘t wait for book club to discuss! It‘s long, too long for some, but I love really getting to know the characters, though most were rich snobs, there were plenty of layers to peel and they were nitty gritty. I loved the atmosphere and setting, loved how things escalated from one disaster to the next and I did not see that ending coming! This is one that I‘ll be thinking about for a long time. #pop22 ~ A book set in the 1980‘s

RaeLovesToRead Ooh this is on my lost of books I need to read this year. Glad it fits with a prompt! 4mo
BarbaraBB Yeah this one is really good! 4mo
Cinfhen It also works for #DarkAcademia #Booked2022 🙏🏼😁 4mo

KarenUK My all time favorite book! 💕 4mo
Cortg @BarbaraBB @KarenUK I'm so glad I finally read it! Yay for reading challenges 😄 4mo
Cinfhen Hi, Cort!! You feel like reading Vox next week? Or the first week of March?? 4mo
Cortg @Cinfhen Oooh! Let‘s do it! How about the 1st week in March?! That‘ll give me time to read To Paradise that I just started and is already overdue 😂 4mo
Cinfhen Ohhhh you‘re gonna have your hands tied. We can push it off if you want as it gets closer 4mo
Cinfhen Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts on 4mo
Cortg @Cinfhen The first week in March should be fine. I‘m looking forward to a buddy read! 4mo
Cinfhen Same 😁 4mo

I like that the narrator of this novel is NOT a highly self-aware millennial. 😂

Our middle aged narrator is married to a professor embroiled in a sex scandal at the college where they teach. Vladimir, a sexy youngish writer, is brought into the department, and our MC is hot and bothered, but her fantasy is as much about being untied from her husband‘s scandal as about Vlad himself. The ending is abrupt but still an enjoyable book. #botm ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ y‘all like how I made my ending abrupt?? 😂😉 To me, this book was as much a fantasy about escape: escape from marriage, escape from boredom, escape from sanity, as it is about anything tangible. Even the ending is itself an escape, both for the protagonists and for the author from having to create something a little less deus ex machina. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I still liked it though. #DarkAcademia #Booked2022 @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft (edited) 5mo
marleed Your pic! 4mo
Cinfhen Great review!! Love the throw pillows!!! Agreed, the female narrator was a welcome change in terms of female characters. This book might stay with me longer than most. I bumped it up a bit for the audio narration. 4mo

BarbaraBB Very good review! I‘d almost read it but for that cover 😂 (edited) 4mo
Megabooks @marleed I wanted to be a little fun! You have to with that cover! 😂😂 4mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks! Yes, Lowman is a great narrator‼️, but it was good in print, too. 😁 4mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB 😂😂 I kind of like its sauciness. Maybe I have a secret thing for chest hair! 😉 4mo

This is the perfect example of don‘t judge a book by it‘s cover. This book is way meatier than expected and quite literary as well. The unnamed narrator is a 58 year old professor at a small liberal arts college where her husband has been accused of numerous cases of sexual assault. What she‘s unaware of is how the allegations will affect her. A true page turner with some unexpected surprises. #Booked2022 #DarkAcademia

TrishB I looked at this and thought I could not read this on the bus! Definitely judging by the cover 😁 5mo
Cinfhen Maybe on your kindle ☺️but I‘d wait for a #DailyDeal @TrishB xx 5mo
Bklover From various reviews this sounds good, but good grief the cover is awful! 😆 4mo
Cinfhen The cover is really deceiving @Bklover - I get why the author/ publisher wanted to take this approach but it takes away from the book‘s literary qualities 4mo
