The Halloween Tree | Ray Bradbury

A quick and fun read about a group of boys who get transported all over the world and throughout the centuries on Halloween Night. I loved the illustrations in this edition, especially this one that's perfect for #AutumnFoliage #OctoberPhotoADay.

If you don't like character-driven stories, this one is not for you. Not much happens plot-wise until the end and then it ends on a cliffhanger 😱 But I personally loved the characters and the growth they experienced & community they built together. A ragtag group of misfits stuck on an alien ship that they don't quite understand and everyone out to get them. The world building was great and I'm ready to jump back in whenever book 2 is written...

There are a lot of witchy romances out there and not all of them are great. But I thought this one was so unique and well written. Essie and her coven have some quirky magical powers and I loved their house with a mind of it's own. She and Josh have great chemistry but they both have past traumas that they need to process, while also trying to stop an evil monster spirit from ending the world.

Victor Frankenstein's sister Angelika is a headstrong, unique woman who hasn't been able to find a suitable husband. So she pieces one together herself and gives him life again. But while her creation is everything she wants in a man, he is tormented by the past he can't remember and the life he left behind. She reluctantly tries to help him investigate even as they fall more for each other. This was such a fun story with great characters!

White Magic | Elissa Washuta

Mehso-so

Elissa intertwines her experience as a Native woman with cultural aspects of her life and examines occult trends compared to her observations of the power of magic. She goes into detail about her past abusive relationships, PTSD, and alcoholism & her search for love and meaning in her life.
Mixed feelings about this one. It's a powerful account of trauma and the effects of colonialism but sometimes I had a hard time following the narrative.

Finished my #Scarathlon #TeamBuddyRead yesterday. Between so-so & pick. I liked the premise of Alex hiding from her notoriety & trying to find out why her parents were murdered & the pacing was good, but there were too many characters & red herrings added in & the big twists seemed pretty obvious to me. Not every #Kill was plausible either but it had enough to warrant using it for today‘s #ScarathlonPhotoChallenge prompt.

A good point getter ⬇️

I really enjoyed the Instanbul setting and learning more about the diverse groups of people that inhabit the city. However, I didn't find the story all that plausible and I didn't care for the graphic violence.

The Book of Cold Cases | Simone St. James
post image

I read some fun books last week!! I really enjoyed all of these. Up to No Gouda was my least favorite of the batch - it was okay, but maybe it is just my suspicious mind talking - I had trouble discerning who was supposed to be “ominous“ and who was supposed to be a good guy 😂 She would say things like, “I met his gaze and felt a little uncomfortable. He had been coming in for lunch every day“ except then it turns out she's uncomfortable ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) because she thinks he's cute and nice and actually has a crush on him 😆 I don't usually read ghost/paranormal stories, but I really enjoyed The Book of Cold Cases which was paranormal without being horror. The Dead Romantics was also ghosty, and while I loved the romance, it was honestly just such a lovely book about grief and moving forward. Of course Roberts pretty much always delivers - The Collector wasn't a new favorite, but it was⬇ 6mo

A single mother moves her family to a remote island so she can paint a mural in an old lighthouse owned by the wealthiest man in town, when 2 of her daughters suddenly go missing. 20yrs later 1 of them is found, but she hasn‘t aged at all.

Loved how this book pays homage to the unnamed ppl burned at the stake for witchcraft.
