Miracle Creek
Miracle Creek: A Novel | Angie Kim
A thrilling debut novel for fans of Liane Moriarty and Celeste Ng about how far well go to protect our familiesand our deepest secrets My husband asked me to lie. Not a big lie. He probably didnt even consider it a lie, and neither did I, at first . . . In rural Virginia, Young and Pak Yoo run an experimental medical treatment device known as the Miracle Submarinea pressurized oxygen chamber that patients enter for therapeutic dives with the hopes of curing issues like autism or infertility. But when the Miracle Submarine mysteriously explodes, killing two people, a dramatic murder trial upends the Yoos small community. Who or what caused the explosion? Was it the mother of one of the patients, who claimed to be sick that day but was smoking down by the creek? Or was it Young and Pak themselves, hoping to cash in on a big insurance payment and send their daughter to college? The ensuing trial uncovers unimaginable secrets from that nighttrysts in the woods, mysterious notes, child-abuse chargesas well as tense rivalries and alliances among a group of people driven to extraordinary degrees of desperation and sacrifice. Angie Kims Miracle Creek is a thoroughly contemporary take on the courtroom drama, drawing on the authors own life as a Korean immigrant, former trial lawyer, and mother of a real-life submarine patient. Both a compelling page-turner and an excavation of identity and the desire for connection, Miracle Creek is a brilliant, empathetic debut from an exciting new voice.

I opened it directly after Whisper Network and was disappointed to be reading another legal thriller. However, I quickly became invested, at least through the first half. The story slowly unwinds, and becomes a little less engaging in the second half. It would be an interesting read for an autism advocate or lifelong caretaker. It could kindle a discussion about the morality of truth telling and the #metoo movement. 3.5⭐

This was an impressive debut from Angie Kim. A riveting courtroom drama with authentic characters. The mystery will draw you in but it's the powerful, honest portrayal of parenthood, disability care, and immigration that will make you fall. One of my favorite reads this year!

The last third was not as strong, but still a 4 star read for being so hard to put down for the first 2/3. Part courtroom drama, part a reflection on responsibility versus guilt and other complex moral and emotional topics. It would be a great book club read and sure to generate much discussion!

A great, compelling, holiday read, that melds family, medical and courtroom drama together. Lots of great discussion of the complex nature of family dynamics, and how they bend and behave in extreme conditions. Although not overly challenging or original, this was well-written and I was entertained.

I need help narrowing down my Oct audiobook choices for #screamathon! All of these are currently available on Hoopla or Libby. I added some cozies so I don‘t have nightmares all month. 😆

If you have listened to any of these on audio and enjoyed the narrator, let me know!

Most of these also fit the theme for #teamslaughter #scarathon. Yes, I am that person doing two Halloween challenges, because organizing one apparently isn‘t enough. 😂😂

4thhouseontheleft @WanderingBookaneer Thanks!! Moving that one up higher on my audio TBR! 4w
KatieDid927 Miracle Creek isn‘t Screamathon level imo. It‘s not a thriller, more like a courtroom drama. It‘s also overrated. 4w

Suet624 @KatieDid927 I completely agree. 4w
4thhouseontheleft @KatieDid927 @suet624 Thank you!! Crossing it off for Oct. Goodreads has it listed as thriller but I thought it might not be the kind of thriller I am looking for. Although I am a wimp, I rarely read horror 😂, courtroom drama is not what I‘m looking for. 4w
hes7 I really liked Locked Every Door. Definitely creepy. 4w
Tiffiney Loved Lock Every Door and Pretty Girls! 4w
Clwojick The Girl in the Garden was good - though I‘d call it more mystery than horror. And Pretty Girls is ESPECIALLY creepy on audio. It was actually the first audiobook I ever listened to, and loved it! But heads up - it‘s a bit dark. 4w
Cathythoughts Loved the tagged book 👍🏻♥️ 4w
4thhouseontheleft @hes7 @Tiffiney Thanks! 📚 @Clwojick I have to sprinkle in mystery, I can‘t do a lot of horror at one time, or I end up with nightmares! I‘m a bit of a wimp when it comes to that. 😂 4w

Kaila-ann I enjoyed this one when I listened to it on hoopla 4w

Kim's writing and originality is what kept me going. While I didn't love it, I genuinely liked it and do feel compelled to point out again what an extraordinary author she is. The mystery aspect was both captivating and thrilling. But it was the characters themselves that were the negative, perhaps that was the point. Even with the unlikeability factor, the actual character study is something to be acknowledged, especially in a debut.

⭐️⭐️ I do want to say I appreciate the raw honesty in some of the characters flaws, but at the same time, some of the things they said about autism and disabilities were just….wow. So trigger warnings for that along with death, a child‘s death, suicide, sexual assault, PTSD. There several scenes that felt like they repeated over just from different points of view which I felt was really unnecessary. This book could have been shortened tremendously.

Cathythoughts I found it a page turner & absolutely brilliant!! ( love all the different reviews.. 1mo

⭐️⭐️½ • I had a hard time caring about most of the characters which meant I had a hard time getting through this book. I felt that the character development was really uneven. Overall there was an unrealistic amount of lying happening about silly things for how serious of a situation it was. But it perked up a bit at the end. I read an advance reader copy titled Miracle Submarine. Maybe other significant changes were made before final publication?

MelissaSue81 I really didn't like this one either.. For many of the same reasons. I also found the ending to be really unsatisfying.. like of all the people that it COULD have been, I felt it was the worst possible option.

5⭐️The most thought-provoking book this year for me. The metaphor/symbolism of this story .. like taking a dive deep into the psyche -pun intended. To be a carer for your child, to be an immigrant & have your family torn apart. We see the characters under severe pressure, we see their darkest thoughts & acts & they are ashamed , remorseful. exploring the underbelly of feeling- desperation, regret, cruelty, torment ,envy

The entire first 2/3 of the book leaves you guessing who did it, and then the last 1/3 leaves you wondering what's going to happen. How the story unfolds from so many prospects was fantastic. There is only one part that pissed me off, and that is the one crime that someone got away with, although, unfortunately, in our society, it is a realistic outcome...

Given the depths of the universal lying that is at the center of this book, it feels as though the truth is never going to be told, until, eventually, we learn the truth all at once, but too late. Those who deserve to be punished, mostly, are punished, and there are a lot of guilty what ifs. It's entertaining and informative and well written and a quick read. #deweyaug #reversereadathon @DeweysReadathon ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reading this book was like putting a puzzle together slowly and then the author gives you a huge missing piece at the end. I liked the ending!
