October, October | Katya Balen
120 posts | 1 read | 10 to read
A classic in the making for anyone who ever longed to be WILD. October and her dad live in the woods. They sleep in the house Dad built for them and eat the food they grow in the vegetable patches. They know the trees and the rocks and the lake and stars like best friends. They read the books they buy in town again and again until the pages are soft and yellow until next year's town visit. They live in the woods and they are wild. And that's the way it is. Until the year October turns eleven. That's the year October rescues a baby owl. It's the year Dad falls out of the biggest tree in their woods. The year the woman who calls herself October's mother comes back. The year everything changes. Written in Katya Balen's heart-stoppingly beautiful style, this book is a feast for the senses, filled with the woodsmoke smell of crisp autumn mornings and the sound of wellies squelching in river mud. And, as October fights to find the space to be wild in the whirling chaos of the world beyond the woods, it is also a feast for the soul.

I felt like I read nonstop in October, so I wasn‘t too shocked when I tallied 2 literary magazines and 26 books for the month. Now I‘m intentionally slowing the pace a bit to avoid burnout.

Standouts for the month were—Murder in the Family (fascinating true crime book written by the son of a woman who died of arsenic poisoning in 1959.)

-No Easy Answers (not especially well written but it sent me down the Columbine rabbit hole again. ⬇️

Reviewsbylola and it offered many tidbits I hadn‘t known before.) -Strike Your Heart (an amazing Europa I stumbled upon to fulfill a prompt for #booked2021. So good that I immediately got an Abe Books and bought more of the author‘s books.) (edited) 2mo

Reviewsbylola I hope you love them as much as I did! @vivastory 2mo
Reviewsbylola It‘s SO good. The author‘s father was a Canadian ambassador, so he was posted all over. The poisoning happened when the family lived in Buenos Aires and the setting of BA in the 1950s/60s was such a special addition to the story. I felt like I was reading a novel! @SomedayAlmost 2mo
Reviewsbylola It‘s one of my favorites! I‘ve only started subscribing this year but it‘s been on my radar for ages thanks to Nick Hornby! @StaceGhost 2mo
BarbaraBB Great month and such a great picture! 2mo
StaceGhost @Reviewsbylola ooo his columns are the best! I have a few of his compilations too— he introduced me to a ton of great books. I also love how his lists of read and purchased make me feel better about not immediately reading what I‘ve purchased lol two totally different motivations at play there 2mo

#Octwrapup
All over the map this month! I opened a new B&N on October 6th…. So my reading has been sporadic!

But definitely some good ones! Cloud Cuckoo Land and Jacket Weather are both headed for my end of year favorites list, a bookclub re-read made me fall in love with the Lily King all over again, the Thursday murder club was a rare superior sequel, and I was totally here for the Housewives tea! ☕️

BarbaraBB Was Writers & Lovers a reread? I seem to remember I read it last year based on your review! 2mo
KarenUK Yes it was @BarbaraBB I was leading a book club discussion on it, and my memory sucks! 😂 2mo
BarbaraBB I‘m glad my memory didn‘t fool me! Was it as good the second time? 2mo

RainyDayReading I‘ll try to update tonight. These last few days have been so crazy I haven‘t done any totals yet. 3mo
Lizpixie Thank you for being the best captain on Litsy!(well, @Andrew65 is pretty awesome too🙌)I know I had a great time last month & read many more books off my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom than I would‘ve on my own. Now I just have to figure out how to sneak replacements past the hubby😂 3mo
Clwojick @Lizpixie oh I‘m sure you‘ll find a way! 😜😜 3mo
Lizpixie @Clwojick ah, you know me well🤗 3mo
Larkken This was so fun! Thanks so much for hosting! 2mo
Andrew65 @Lizpixie Why thank you 🤣, but I agree with you @Clwojick is awesome. Following my illness and other things I have decided to leave education at the next possible leave date (1st April) so should have more time to read and interact with everyone on Litsy. 2mo
Lizpixie @Andrew65 are congratulations or commiserations in order? How are you and your wife going with your health? My daughter is still having problems with chest pain & fatigue two months later. 2mo
Andrew65 @Lizpixie We still get tired easily and kicked off my IBS in a big way, not been as bad as this in years and same with (non alcohol rated) liver issue.Made the arthritis in my shoulder and my wife‘s knee much worse bizarrely. Hope the chest pain goes soon for your daughter. This is the first week I have been back full time. (edited) 2mo
Andrew65 @Lizpixie With the job I‘ve been in education 31 years, almost 20 years as a head teacher, I‘m 56 next month and my wife is 10 years older than me. When there was a real danger she‘d have to go into hospital with it and I had to drop her off at A + E I really made the decision that day that we had plans we wanted to do and if she had died we would never have the chance to do that. So a mixture of not feeling able to put her at risk anymore 👇 2mo
Andrew65 Which at the current time going to school everyday does (especially with the governments idiotic approach to COvID - bury your head in the sand and hope it goes away), I decided I had to leave education and take the time to do some of those things whilst we are both still able to. She is quite immobile these days with her knee so I felt now was the time for something different without putting her at great risk.👇 (edited) 2mo
Andrew65 To be honest also don‘t like the way education is heading and what I am having to ask staff to do, and especially around. COvID. Doesn‘t sit well with me so now seems the right time to leave and do some touring and try some other ways to make some money until I can access part of my pension when I am 60. I don‘t feel happy about it in some ways, in others I do. And the same I don‘t feel sad about it but in some ways I do. (edited) 2mo
Andrew65 However I am a very down to earth person and once I have made a decision I don‘t think about it or worry too much, that happens when I am trying to make a decision. It is now just what it is now the decision is made. The difficult thing will be telling people when it is made public and feeling as if I am letting people down. But I have been head at the school for over 15 years so feel I have done my time and can hold my head up high. 2mo
Andrew65 Excuse the essay. 🤣 2mo
Clwojick @Andrew65 You should definitely hold your head up high! If you‘ve made this much of an impression on the people on Litsy, who you have never met, then I am certain you‘ve changed lives and shaped futures for your students and staff. ❤️I‘m sure it will be a bittersweet moment, but I‘m proud of you for taking time for you and your wife to simply do what you‘ve always wanted to do! I applaud that decision,& I can‘t wait to hear about your adventures. 2mo
Lizpixie @Andrew65 no problem, you tell your story honey! The hubby and I have been having very similar conversations, our dream always was to buy an old van to fix up into a camper and travel Australia for a few years hitting every state and all the national parks along the way. I‘ve always dreamt of Tasmania in the south, Kakadu in the north & Broome or Margaret River in the west. And I agree with @Clwojick you be proud of who you are🙌 2mo

Finally finished rallying up my week 3 and 4 #scarathlon points, and overall I‘m pretty happy with my numbers. I added another 2,857 points to #TeamSlaughters total. I can‘t wait to see what the final numbers will be!

Week 1 was my best week for points, thanks to the word game. Week 3 was the best week for reading, and week 4 was my worst reading week.

I will say I felt a little out of sorts without my bullet journal, but I FINALLY found it!

DieAReader You slayed it!🔪😏 Awesome job & great work Captain👩🏻‍✈️As for the bullet journal🤨Murphy‘s Law! Glad you found it though🥰 3mo

Here‘s how many books I read in October. This wasn‘t my best reading month. I carried both of these books over from my September TBR so I could read them this month. These books were both physical books. I‘m glad I read these 2 books but I didn‘t get to read the spooky books I wanted to read. I have a hard time focusing on physical books so it takes me longer to read them but it doesn‘t take me as long to listen to audiobooks.

I‘m late on everything this week because I was traveling. Despite massive troubles getting there it was an amazing visit with my mom and my sister‘s family, but now I‘m off by several days and trying to adjust to being home.

My final count for #OutstandingOctober is 23 hours of reading, starting & finishing 2 books marked with the 👻 👻 reading 10 stories in Good Southern Witches, finishing the last half of These Violent Delights for #sundaybuddyread 👻 & starting & listening to 76% of Deathless Divide, both marked with 💀

Not bad for a crazy work schedule & trying to catch up on sleep over the weekend. Plus some good points for #scarathlon #teamhendrix too.🧙‍♀️

For #OutstandingOctober I want to finish Fight or Flight. It almost looks like I planned my reads with #bookspinbingo in mind, doesn‘t it? But the two left in that line are both second in series, so I need to spread out some to get to those. Trying to decide what to start next, maybe In Cold Blood and then one of the series starters.

Here is my October TBR. All of these books are books that I didn‘t get around to reading. The books I chose last month also match the cards I drew from The Secret Language Of Color Cards. The physical book I have to read is Appalachia. I just started it today but I‘m not very far in it yet. The other books are all audiobooks. I still haven‘t chosen books for my other reading challenges that I‘m participating in this year but I‘ll figure it out.

I have been slacking on posting & reviewing. Darn it. Here's my October #bookspin #bookspinbingo list. All thrillers since it looks like #botm is going to let me down. Can't wait to get started. September started off rough & I just couldn't recover. ☹️

I‘m not going to consider this cheating. I still haven‘t touched my September #bookspin selections, so I‘m repeating the list for October because…I 💜 this monthly challenge. If the same numbers from Sept. are picked (13 & 15, I think), I‘ll pull in the neighboring read in it‘s place (14 for 13, 16 for 15). I think that makes sense… 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

TheAromaofBooks Sounds good to me!!! 4mo

GASP! #Scarathlon2021 starts in just two short days! Even sooner for some of our Australian players 🖤

So #TeamSlaughter, are you ready to get your spooky reading on?! I know I am! Just a reminder to post your Scarathlon TBR if you haven‘t already, for those 50 early bird points.

I wrote up a quick little document, with all the event details in one place.

TheBookDream Do books we start now but finish in October count towards the Scarathalon? 4mo
Clwojick @TheBookDream absolutely! 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures Is it too late to join? I signed up at one point but then forgot, and I don't understand this Team Slaughter, is this a team challenge or is the Slaughter read just a bonus? Thanks!

RedxoHearts Thanks for the reminder and the handy info sheet 💕 4mo
Clwojick @ChaoticMissAdventures there are two teams, #teamslaughter and #teamhendrix, and each team has genres that count for team themes. 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Clwojick thank you! I filled this out at some point but maybe I did it wrong! Filling it out again 😀 4mo

4thhouseontheleft Have you seen any Halloween movie bingo boards this year? 4mo
Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft I haven‘t! But I assumed I just missed it. Someone must have posted one! Lol 4mo
Clwojick @slategreyskies welcome to team slaughter! Please read the file! 4mo
slategreyskies Just curious— I did read the file, but I didn‘t see any mention of points for Halloween themed (or team theme) related short stories. I‘ve got a book of those and would like to count them toward our team points if possible. How much are they worth per story? 4mo
Clwojick @slategreyskies short stories or anthologies count as multiples! So if you read a collection with 10 Halloween stories, the full book would be 10x25= 250points. Plus a participation point for each time you post! 4mo
