We, the Drowned
We, the Drowned | Carsten Jensen
Carsten Jensens debut novel has taken the world by storm. Already hailed in Europe as an instant classic, We, the Drowned is the story of the port town of Marstal, whose inhabitants have sailed the worlds oceans aboard freight ships for centuries. Spanning over a hundred years, from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the Second World War, and from the barren rocks of Newfoundland to the lush plantations of Samoa, from the roughest bars in Tasmania, to the frozen coasts of northern Russia, We, the Drowned spins a magnificent tale of love, war, and adventure, a tale of the men who go to sea and the women they leave behind. Ships are wrecked at sea and blown up during wars, they are places of terror and violence, yet they continue to lure each generation of Marstal menfathers and sonsaway. Strong, resilient, women raise families alone and sometimes take history into their own hands. There are cannibals here, shrunken heads, prophetic dreams, forbidden passions, cowards, heroes, devastating tragedies, and miraculous survivalseverything that a town like Marstal has actually experienced, and that makes We, the Drowned an unforgettable novel, destined to take its place among the greatest seafaring literature.

Denmark has 8.750km of coastline, and you are never more than 52km away from #thecoast, no matter where you are at. This book (which I haven‘t read) is set in a little coastal town on a small Danish Island, and tells the saga of four generations of men going out to sea, and the families they leave behind.

BarbaraBB Great post! 5mo
Henrik_Madsen It is a chunkster but it is not a hard read. I absolutely loved it when I read it after it came out. (It is also a tale of two cities, one oreoccupied with farming and the land, the other one focused on the sea. Jensen sides with the mariners.) 5mo
Kalalalatja @Mitch @LeahBergen @Tamra @Henrik_Madsen I have wanted to read it for ages, but for some reason I keep forgetting about it. Good to know, it is worth it! 5mo

While waiting for my brakes to be done at the service center, I walked to Barnes and Noble to use the gift card they sent me. I needed a little retail therapy to cope with the total repair bill. 😭 Tagged book for me. Signed book for Mom. Mood instantly improved. 😂#bookhaul

Oh my goodness @Robothugs I love everything! You have no idea how many times I‘ve picked up the tagged book but didn‘t buy it for one reason or another! The other two books look equally fantastic. The chapstick made me giggle (Pride & Peppermint). The chocolates look almost too pretty to eat... almost. Of course, the slippers are just as cozy as I expected. And I love the bookmark from @BookBabe . I love it all! Thank you so much!! 📚🎄🤶🏼

I had to bail on the audio version of this. I couldn't get into it, which made keeping track of all the different characters impossible on top of an ever changing POV. For those who have read it, is it worth trying again with print? Side note, this cover is so lovely.

vivastory I read it last month. I enjoyed it. It's not amazing, but it is worth your time and money. 3y
julesG It was too Scandinavian for my taste. I somehow pick up books written by Scandinavians at a nearly regular interval, just to dismiss them halfway through; at first I like the prose and then I'm suddenly annoyed by it. So it's the style of writing that I struggle with, not the content. Just saying. 3y
Foxyfictionista Are you able to find it at your library? That's what I do if I'm not sure. 3y
scripturient @Foxyfictionista The 'problem' is that I'm in Germany so pretty much all of the books at the library are German translations and I prefer English. :) But yes, that might be an option. 😊 3y

tricours I've got it in English, but I only got a couple of pages in before a poor translation started annoying me, and I didn't get any further... I do plan on reading it though, but I'd prefer to find it in Danish or Norwegian! 3y
scripturient @tricours 😳 Oh wow, thanks for the warning. Maybe the German translation might be better after all. 🤔 I don't speak Danish unfortunately. Well, I understand the basic gist when I read it but not enough to read a 700 page novel. 🙂 3y
Sapphire My great grandmother used to say if you are compelled to return to an item three times, you should get it. 3y
Soubhiville @Sapphire that is very good advice! 3y

This Danish seafaring epic is great to read if you want to really commit to something huge. It's long and its story spans 4 generations over a hundred years, all revolving around a tiny coastal village. The characters, who really drive the narrative, are thrown into all sorts of dire circumstances and the ending brings it all full circle in a really satisfying way. And Jensen can tell a beautiful story.

After Moby Dick, I have sworn off books set primarily at sea. My love of Simon Vance and my trust in @Dogearedcopy prompted me to give this audiobook a try. I'm so thankful. I enjoyed this saga narrated by the voice of the community of a shipping town in Denmark.

I started listening to this before #ArmchairAudies. I didn't finish it, but I've been listening to it when my current nominee is a CD copy. I'm really drawn to Albert's story especially and the way Jensen is telling the tale. Sneaking time in with Simon Vance this time of year is also very nice.
