Night Shift | Stephen King

Pickpick

I love Stephen king. There‘s nothing more cozy than a rainy/snowy day and sitting on the couch reading a King novel. While I‘ve read a couple of these stories before, most of them I never have. And these are OG King!

Like any short story compilation, there are hits and misses. It was fun reading the ones that‘ve been made into movies (Lawnmower Man I had to look up, because that movie‘s only similarity is the title. Apparently King…

Lauranahe sued them to have his name removed from the title because of that!). And, like any old school King, there are some slurs and offensive language we don‘t use any more. I just take a breath, cringe, and move on.

They‘re good, classic Stephen King. Understand the time it was written, navigate the offensive stuff, and buckle in for the ride. And if you‘re chonky like me, try not to be offended at his clear disdain of fat people.

The Book of Swords | Gardner Dozois

101/100 It took me over a year to finish this, not because it wasn't good, just enjoyed it more in pieces instead all at once. Like all anthologies by various authors, some stories were great, some were just okay, and only one clunker. Surprisingly, the George RR Martin Game of Thrones story was one of the weaker ones. My favorites were "Her Father's Sword" by Robin Hobbs, "Hrunting" by C.J. Cherryh, "When I Was A Highway Man" by Ellen Kushner,

RamsFan1963 "The Smoke of Gold is Glory" by Scott Lynch and "The Colgrid Conundrum" by Rich Larson. 4.5/5 ⭐ #Read2025 14h

#Read2025

My last book of November, completed tonight for #ChildrensClassicRead2025 Its age (published in 1901) shows it the storytelling & some of the 8 stories were not that great, but I liked a few & it was mildly enjoyable so I‘ll give it a soft pick for nostalgia. 🐉💚

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

Spending my #HyggeHour on the couch finishing up my last book of November for #ChildrensClassicRead2025 🐉

I‘m (sadly) starting my last bag of stuffing popcorn🍿😢 & drinking a spiced pear Hint water (one of their holiday flavors).🍐

Mood is really not at all ready for Monday & a new busy workweek. 😵‍💫

AllDebooks Oooh, I love the sound of your book. I hope you find some peaceful moments in your busy week. X 13h

Different Seasons | Stephen King

I still like this book, but I noticed some issues that didn‘t bother me when I first read it. In The Body, the use of Gordie‘s short stories is completely unnecessary; it just makes the story longer than it needs to be. The Breathing Method, about pregnancy and birth, is just odd. I‘m not sure it needed the framing with old men telling stories in a creepy club — what exactly that club is is left hanging. #audiowalk

It‘s time for our #ChristiesCapers discussion! There are questions posted as spoilers that can be found on my feed, the book‘s feed, or by searching the group‘s hashtags.

Next month, we learn about The Mysterious Mr. Quin! Official post tomorrow (hopefully). #AgathaChristieClubR3

BarbaraJean Yay! I‘m hoping to maybe finish the book this afternoon… I‘ll pop into the discussion when I do! 2d

5. Let's now turn our attention to the mysteries themselves. Did you have a favorite mystery from the collection? A least favorite? Any aspects of the mysteries that stood out for you that you wish to discuss? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

kspenmoll Let me think & get back to you. Hard to choose! 2d
MallenNC I really liked the one at the beginning when Tuppence conspired with the “missing” woman. And The Man in Mist was actually kind of creepy, which was a change from some of the other stories. 1d
kelli7990 I don‘t have a favorite. 1d
willaful The masquerade story always seemed very sad to me and I thought Christie did a nice job with the “Father Brown“ story. The failed melodrama of the one with the arctic explorer was pretty funny. (Though I doubt that poor woman will be happy!) 1d

I've two more short stories to read in New Suns, the one I've just read being my favourite so far: One Easy Trick by Hiromi Goto which includes an encounter with a spirit bear. Synchronistically, reading on in Sharon Olds collection was a poem, A Song Near the End of the World, which is also about a bear encounter and its meaningfulness. I love when readings resonate and reinforce each other 🐻😌

Bookwomble Not bear-related, but I was listening to the Cocteau Twins track, Seekers Who Are Lovers, while reading these texts, and the lush, ethereal sounds really caught my mood.
