The Angel's Game
The Angel's Game | Carlos Ruiz Zafon
From the author of the international phenomenon The Shadow of the Wind, comes a riveting new masterpiece about love, literature, and betrayal. In this powerful, labyrinthian thriller, David Martn is a pulp fiction writer struggling to stay afloat. Holed up in a haunting abandoned mansion in the heart of Barcelona, he furiously taps out story after story, becoming increasingly desperate and frustrated. Thus, when he is approached by a mysterious publisher offering a book deal that seems almost too good to be real, David leaps at the chance. But as he begins the work, and after a visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, he realizes that there is a connection between his book and the shadows that surround his dilapidated home and that the publisher may be hiding a few troubling secrets of his own. Once again, Ruiz Zafn takes us into a dark, gothic Barcelona and creates a breathtaking tale of intrigue, romance, and tragedy From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pulp fiction writer David Martín is struggling to stay afloat. When he is approached by a mysterious publisher offering a book deal that seems almost too good to be real, David leaps at the chance…after that the plot becomes intricate and mind-boggling. David has a brain tumor, then he doesn‘t. He becomes an unreliable narrator. I think I need to go back and read Shadow of the Wind in hopes it will all make sense.

I didn't like this one nearly as much as the other books in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series. I thought it got very wordy in places, and could have been a much shorter book.

Another #AuthorAMonth book completed during the #NovelNovember Readathon!

Andrew65 Well done on finishing 👏👏👏 2w
Soubhiville What a gorgeous photo! Is this a table? I love it. I find Zafron‘s writing a bit dense, and a bit more challenging to get through than I‘m often in the mood for. But so very quotable too. 2w

Next up for #NovelNovember Readathon.

Yes, I know I'm reading The Cemetary of Forgotten Books out of order of when they were written, but there are some that suggest this should be read after The Prisoner of Heaven, as it is referenced at the end of that book.

I may start reading it and realize I should have read it before The Prisoner of Heaven, but we'll see. 😂

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Be interesting to hear how it goes reading this one third. 3w
CoffeeNBooks @Andrew65 I might have made a terrible mistake, lol! 🤣 We'll see... 3w

This is a great story. The author basically creates all these lovely characters and then kills them off slowly and in unexpected ways. It's possible I am exaggerating. It's good that you don't seem to need to have read the previous book in the series because it's been a long time. And it'll probably be a long time before I adventure into another one.

Thanks to @Soubhiville and the #authoramonth challenge, I have finished my first Carlos Ruiz Zafón book, just in time! He is a fantastic storyteller! This story is for book lovers everywhere! Dan Steven‘s narration was perfect, but I know that I missed information not having it in print. I was moved by certain passages about books, and would have shared. Barcelona came alive for me! Struggling writer, bookshop haven, love triangle, demon, cinematic.

Once again the author creates a vivid 1920's Barcelona where the streets although dark come alive. The author is known for his world building and this book doesn't disappoint on that but I really wasn't into the plot or characters in this one. This book is a mix of gothic mystery with paranormal elements which on the whole didnt work for me, the pacing of mysteries are too slow to hold my attention and this is definitely a slow burn.

Coleen_Nieto @michellesibs I agree, of the books in the series, I liked this one the least but overall I love love love the series. It will make more sense when you get to the 3rd and 4th books. 12mo

Slightly unsatisfactory prequel-sequel to Shadow of the Wind, wherein a hack author is engaged by what I'm assuming is the Devil to create a new religion. Intriguing premise which never really develops and leaves this reader slightly baffled. Hopefully the subsequent installments make more sense.

I've tried to read this book multiple times throughout the years but I just couldn't see how it would be as great as Ruiz Zafón's first book, The Shadow of the Wind, one of my all time favorite books.
