The Angel's Game
The Angel's Game | Carlos Ruiz Zafon
From the author of the international phenomenon The Shadow of the Wind, comes a riveting new masterpiece about love, literature, and betrayal. In this powerful, labyrinthian thriller, David Martn is a pulp fiction writer struggling to stay afloat. Holed up in a haunting abandoned mansion in the heart of Barcelona, he furiously taps out story after story, becoming increasingly desperate and frustrated. Thus, when he is approached by a mysterious publisher offering a book deal that seems almost too good to be real, David leaps at the chance. But as he begins the work, and after a visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, he realizes that there is a connection between his book and the shadows that surround his dilapidated home and that the publisher may be hiding a few troubling secrets of his own. Once again, Ruiz Zafn takes us into a dark, gothic Barcelona and creates a breathtaking tale of intrigue, romance, and tragedy From the Trade Paperback edition.

This was a bit of a disappointment after The shafow of the wind. David Martin slightly annoyed me and I just couldn't care what happened to him. The ending was exciting though.

I've tried to read this book multiple times throughout the years but I just couldn't see how it would be as great as Ruiz Zafón's first book, The Shadow of the Wind, one of my all time favorite books. For whatever reason, this go around I'm really intrigued by this follow up. Half way through and it's in no danger of being put aside again. Looks like there are 2 more in this series.

1. The above. Read number one in the series about 8 years ago. Had this one for the same amount of years. Have started before, but didn't finish then. I do love books about books.
2. 'Go away, far away. This city is damned. Damned.'
3. English tea with milk, mostly. Babytea, we call it here. But it's nice and warm. Especially after working in the garden all afternoon.

OMG, Zafón has done it again! The Angel's Game, the second in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, was just as phenomenal as Shadow of the Wind. 5 star read! I'm so glad I bit the bullet & bought the rest of the books.

perfectsinner I finally bit the bullet & ordered them all from Amazon. I got really, really lucky finding Shadow of the Wind at a used book sale, and knew my odds of finding the rest of the series would be even more of a struggle against odds, so I finally just did it lol 2mo

I think that I read this book at entirely the wrong time. It was an extremely busy time and I couldn't focus on the storyline enough to enjoy this to the fullest. The language was beautiful and I will definitely consider rereading this when my mind is a little less preoccupied.

Buses are replacing my train today so my usual hour travel time is now two hours. And this particular bus is full of elderly people eating ice cream cones! Strange! Good thing I‘ve got caffeine and my Kindle.

Smrloomis 🤔 What could cause more than one elderly person to eat ice cream on a bus? Are they together? Separate? And why didn‘t they just eat it wherever they bought it? I have so many questions! 😂 Also sorry your travel time just doubled. 5mo

Even though this book has no crossover from the first book other than the Cemetary of Forgotten Books, I enjoyed it. They fixed the problem of the first audiobook with its overloud and distracting music over the narration. I heard the third book returns to some of the original characters so I‘m excited to move forward. #labsoundtrack

Today‘s #labsoundtrack - thankfully they‘ve learned to not play the godawful elevator music over the narration. I think that‘s why I did not enjoy the audio of TSOTW, even though when I read the physical copy years ago, I loved it.

AMAZING novel!!! Such an incredible story that took me on an emotional roller coaster. I‘ve felt hopeless and hopeful for David. I‘ve rooted for him and been mad at him for his grumpiness and rudeness to the people he loved. And the mystery and intrigue was out of this world! 5🌟 (I think this is my favorite book cover ever!) #MountTBR #LitsyAtoZ LetterZ

I read this when it was first released in translation, almost 10 years ago. I remembered almost nothing from that first read. Just recently finished it for the 2nd time and still have virtually no memory of anything from that first go-around. It‘s the 2nd installment in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, and though it‘s a dark tale and full of unanswered questions, the writing is still beautiful.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoyed the characters and the setting descriptions, as well as the colorful language. The plot moved along, but in the end, I don‘t know. It didn‘t seem to hang together all that well. Lots of suspense, and that kept me reading, but then the resolution was creepy (not good-shivery-creepy, more like, ‘what was the author thinking?‘ icky-creepy).

Still, a pick. Thank you @Gissy who sent me this in my Easter basket!

#BookMail Pt3 I was gifted the first book in this “forgotten books”series, The Shadow Of The Wind, in a #LitsySwap last year I think, and I‘d preordered a signed copy of the new one, The Labyrinth Of Spirits, before realising there‘s two more books before that one! This is the 2nd book but is actually a prequel set back in the 40s. Can‘t wait to get started on this series, I‘ve only heard great things.👍

After finishing The Labyrinth of Spirits I had to go back and reread this one again. I love the way all of the stories are tied together and each new addition reveals more connections.

I am very curious about one piece of the puzzle which isn‘t syncing up for me. If anyone has read Labyrinth and this one I‘d love to compare notes about something.

“A writer...will never forget the sweet poison of vanity in his blood and the belief that, if he succeeds in not letting anyone discover his lack of talent, the dream of literature will provide...what he covets the most: his name printed on a miserable piece of paper that will surely outlive him.
