👏Wonderful voice, great pacing that moves back and forth in time to show Joan and Joan in the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of a marriage, a literary career and an examination of men and women and the creative process. Great book 👏

Page turner. Perhaps better than Dark Matter. Crouch twists and turns the story back upon itself all while making some pretty astute observations about human nature.

Read once & Listened to the Audiobook - Anne Dowd is Brilliant as Aunt Lydia! Another great novel with the expected wit and dry humor, word play and skewering look at those who hold power. Probably will read again soon to savor more. now it sits on my Atwood shelf and 1/2

Cinfhen Yes, there was a good deal of subtle sarcasm which was highly entertaining. 4w

Thoroughly entertaining. While it fell short of the bar set by Pullman's original trilogy, His Dark Materials, still left me looking forward to more. A prequel revealing how Lyra (one of the great characters of lit) came to Jordan College, it also feels anticlimactic because we know Lyra will become the heroine in 10 yrs. Pullman peoples his book with new villains, mysterious characters, shadowy organizations, and some familiar faces. Bk#49

hgrimes I loved His Dark Materials and equally loved this book, it was beautiful. I read it last summer and couldn‘t put it down. I can‘t wait for the next one. 3mo

McEwan‘s prose is as beautiful as ever, and I had trouble sustaining a willing disbelief of his narrator‘s situation. There were brilliant moments and deft plays on Hamlet (and other Shakespeare plays) and some insight into issues of modern man, but the story was unoriginal in any way and left me wondering why I bothered. Best allegorical fantasy I‘ve read in ages. I‘d use this in the classroom paired with a classic of allegorical fiction to help young people understand the genre. While not perfect (I found the occasional overlap of relating the same event from two POVs annoying and a flaw of the editor more than the author) it is an immersive experience in a unique world that stands in for some timely current issues.

Ubookquitous The Audiobook was narrated by the amazing Bahni Turpin who also did the standout debut “The Hate U Give” 12mo

As we start on book three I figured I should comment on finishing this. I enjoyed this one more than Pale Horse - in part because it was a bit more humorous- especially Anthony poking fun at all the tropes of SFF. BEMs ala Stormship Troopers! The sexism is still there but a bit less too. It has been years but I‘m starting to remember the threads that connect the characters. thoughts on the authors notes of either book? #incarnationsChapterADay?

CSeydel Ok I‘m going to just put in my bio that I am The Worst Buddy Read Partner Ever. I finally got my library situation sorted out (😡) and I‘m reading On A Pale Horse *now*. I read the first half today and I‘m a little disappointed ... it‘s not living up to my memory ... then again Death wasn‘t my favorite of the series even then. 12mo
Ubookquitous Lol yeah, I think the series improves as it goes, particularly around the interweaving of plot. No worries on timing. Life happens 🤷🏼‍♀️ 12mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel Yep, I finished up my other book last night (for my other buddy read), so hopeful can finish a short story I have going tonight, so catching up with this one is next for me too. Excellent history, connecting the numerous attempts on Victoria's life and the way in cemented the love of her people. The details were excellent and it moved quickly while managing to fold in the political with the personal. I read for #readharder and #popsugarchallenge (both had a true-crime task)

Final thoughts? I think Zane grew and that the nature of the manipulation to put him in the position became clear... and hints about the elaborate plot the incarnations are engaged in against Satan is hinted at. The sexism is annoying but I rolled my eyes and moved on... and the philosophical ideas around the nature of evil and religion were interesting. #incarnationsChapterADay

Day 6, Chapter 6. Zane is growing into the job, but it is clear that others have conspired to place him in the position. We also are seeing Zane grow a bit, reconsider some of the less than admirable uses of magic

#incarnationsChapterADay

mcipher I caught back up! This was a quick chapter and I did like what happened here - Death stopping the suffering of the people in the hospital and the concert bringing together the different groups. Despite his preachiness and some sexism and racism going on here, I think the message was a good one. 14mo
TheSpineView I like that Zane is developing a moral compass. The irony here, Death with a sense of morals! 😆 Maybe it has always been there and he is rediscovering it. 14mo
Guildedearlobe I didn‘t like Zane at first and am still unsure about him as a character. He seemed hapless at first but I‘m glad to see he‘s starting to make his own choices and not just be pulled around by other players. 14mo
