Kindle sale on one of the GREAT intelligent mystery/thriller by an amazing Spanish author. Steeped in history, culture, politics, etc.
Huge tome, great female characters, complex plot.... and Dragons! Get now
Zariel loves dragons and we‘ve been eagerly awaiting this book. #catsoflitsy
Best allegorical fantasy I‘ve read in ages. I‘d use this in the classroom paired with a classic of allegorical fiction to help young people understand the genre. While not perfect (I found the occasional overlap of relating the same event from two POVs annoying and a flaw of the editor more than the author) it is an immersive experience in a unique world that stands in for some timely current issues.
Just started this and I‘m in love with it 45 pages in - okay probably 10. The world building and character voice are brilliant. Callie here is saying “Don‘t touch my amazing book!”
Book 3 - and the first female MCs. Looking forward to this one. #incarnationsChapterADay
As we start on book three I figured I should comment on finishing this. I enjoyed this one more than Pale Horse - in part because it was a bit more humorous- especially Anthony poking fun at all the tropes of SFF. BEMs ala Stormship Troopers! The sexism is still there but a bit less too. It has been years but I‘m starting to remember the threads that connect the characters. thoughts on the authors notes of either book? #incarnationsChapterADay?
#incarnationsChapterADay book3 starts Thursday
Excellent history, connecting the numerous attempts on Victoria's life and the way in cemented the love of her people. The details were excellent and it moved quickly while managing to fold in the political with the personal. I read for #readharder and #popsugarchallenge (both had a true-crime task)
Love or hate the selections, she got American‘s to read more, highlighted lesser know authors, and helped make bookclubs cool 😎
Today‘s Daily Deal at Audible - $2.95 for this classic. Bonus because it is narrated the great Richard Armitage and Emilia Fox
Final thoughts? I think Zane grew and that the nature of the manipulation to put him in the position became clear... and hints about the elaborate plot the incarnations are engaged in against Satan is hinted at. The sexism is annoying but I rolled my eyes and moved on... and the philosophical ideas around the nature of evil and religion were interesting. #incarnationsChapterADay
Ugh - no suspense, “twists” so predictable I knew the ending a few chapters in, and the characters where one-dimensional. I stuck with it when the narration changed POV hoping for a surprise al a Sarah Waters The Fingersmith but ... NOPE Hours I won‘t get back
Day 6, Chapter 6. Zane is growing into the job, but it is clear that others have conspired to place him in the position. We also are seeing Zane grow a bit, reconsider some of the less than admirable uses of magic
We meet another of the Incarnations and learn how not only the technical aspects of Zane's new job works, but also the moral or philosophical aspects from Zane's perspective. We also meet Mortis - the coolest Pale Horse ever!
OAPH contains one of the best inciting incidents of a novel ending with the last line of the first chapter. The image is from the Innovations Comics version of book one.

While I gave it a pick, I didn‘t enjoy this as much as what I‘ve read of him so far. That said, the writing is beautiful despite the grim tale. You can see much of What will be McCarthy‘s trademark spare style and his unique, frightening characters.
How to describe? Political machinations abound - a complex world where sex is not shameful, nor are prostitutes... while the main character is marked by Kushiel and enjoys pain, the sex isn‘t the focus- it IS however important to the story and treated respectfully and more-or-less tastefully
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/books/2018/aug/20/hugo-awards-w... BAM! First author to ever win three years in a row and first trilogy ever to win a Hugo for each Book. So much for the traditionalist who argue that women can‘t write SFF and that if it doesn‘t fit the mold of classic SFF it won‘t sell.
Here is the schedule for book one. I believe the first book is available on Kindle for $2.99 if you don't have it or you can't get a library copy. Two weeks until the start date 😀📚📖📚
