Best allegorical fantasy I‘ve read in ages. I‘d use this in the classroom paired with a classic of allegorical fiction to help young people understand the genre. While not perfect (I found the occasional overlap of relating the same event from two POVs annoying and a flaw of the editor more than the author) it is an immersive experience in a unique world that stands in for some timely current issues.

Ubookquitous The Audiobook was narrated by the amazing Bahni Turpin who also did the standout debut “The Hate U Give” 8mo

As we start on book three I figured I should comment on finishing this. I enjoyed this one more than Pale Horse - in part because it was a bit more humorous- especially Anthony poking fun at all the tropes of SFF. BEMs ala Stormship Troopers! The sexism is still there but a bit less too. It has been years but I‘m starting to remember the threads that connect the characters. thoughts on the authors notes of either book? #incarnationsChapterADay?

CSeydel Ok I‘m going to just put in my bio that I am The Worst Buddy Read Partner Ever. I finally got my library situation sorted out (😡) and I‘m reading On A Pale Horse *now*. I read the first half today and I‘m a little disappointed ... it‘s not living up to my memory ... then again Death wasn‘t my favorite of the series even then. 8mo
Ubookquitous Lol yeah, I think the series improves as it goes, particularly around the interweaving of plot. No worries on timing. Life happens 🤷🏼‍♀️ 8mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel Yep, I finished up my other book last night (for my other buddy read), so hopeful can finish a short story I have going tonight, so catching up with this one is next for me too. I‘ll join you on being late and we can read Bearing the Hourglass together! I too apologize @Ubookquitous we‘re still with you. I am just apparently a horrible judge of my reading commitments, I #BlameLitsy 8mo

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Ok, sounds good. I‘m hoping to try and catch up here this next week, before the end of Oct 🤞. How about you @CSeydel ? 8mo
CSeydel @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Oof. Maybe. I just got back from a conference and I acquired 2 new clients, plus courting two others. Plus a new assignment from an existing client. I‘m trying, but no promises 8mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel 👍that works too, no pressure. 8mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CSeydel OMG...sorry, I just realized there were only 5 days left on Oct! 😂. For some reason I was thinking we had over a week left, with 2 weekends. 😂. Wishful thinking I guess. 8mo
CSeydel Yeah it‘s coming up fast!!! I‘m hoping to finish Pale Horse & Hourglass by Oct 31, and Tangled Skein & Red Sword by Nov 15? Buuuuuut I also have to finish Pachinko for my in-person book club by Nov 14 so let‘s call it a maybe 😬 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa (edited) 8mo

Excellent history, connecting the numerous attempts on Victoria's life and the way in cemented the love of her people. The details were excellent and it moved quickly while managing to fold in the political with the personal. I read for #readharder and #popsugarchallenge (both had a true-crime task)

Final thoughts? I think Zane grew and that the nature of the manipulation to put him in the position became clear... and hints about the elaborate plot the incarnations are engaged in against Satan is hinted at. The sexism is annoying but I rolled my eyes and moved on... and the philosophical ideas around the nature of evil and religion were interesting. #incarnationsChapterADay

Day 6, Chapter 6. Zane is growing into the job, but it is clear that others have conspired to place him in the position. We also are seeing Zane grow a bit, reconsider some of the less than admirable uses of magic

#incarnationsChapterADay

mcipher I caught back up! This was a quick chapter and I did like what happened here - Death stopping the suffering of the people in the hospital and the concert bringing together the different groups. Despite his preachiness and some sexism and racism going on here, I think the message was a good one. 9mo
TheSpineView I like that Zane is developing a moral compass. The irony here, Death with a sense of morals! 😆 Maybe it has always been there and he is rediscovering it. 9mo
Guildedearlobe I didn‘t like Zane at first and am still unsure about him as a character. He seemed hapless at first but I‘m glad to see he‘s starting to make his own choices and not just be pulled around by other players. 9mo
Ubookquitous Yes - agreed that Zane is becoming more like ale and that he is bucking the system. 9mo

Ubookquitous @mcipher Yes the puns and humor like the different models of flying carpets 9mo
mcipher Yes! The carpets are great, and the magic stones. 9mo
Guildedearlobe This is my first time reading Anthony. Was a bit hesitant at first because I found Zane a bit whiney and annoying but Chapter 2 has been great and I especially like the car, MORTIS. 9mo

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/books/2018/aug/20/hugo-awards-w... BAM! First author to ever win three years in a row and first trilogy ever to win a Hugo for each Book. So much for the traditionalist who argue that women can‘t write SFF and that if it doesn‘t fit the mold of classic SFF it won‘t sell.

MicheleinPhilly I don‘t read sci-fi or fantasy but I‘ve always found the “controversy” surrounding the Hugo Awards to be the most perfect example of toxic masculinity. 10mo
Ubookquitous @MicheleinPhilly agreed - there were attempts a block voting and securing votes for only those books that a segment of voters thought should be considered ‘award worthy‘ SFF (edited) 10mo
