Drunken Fireworks | Stephen King

I‘ve read enough of King to realize he doesn‘t always write in “typical” Stephen King style, and this was one of those. Definitely not my favorite of his. Fortunately, it was one of his short stories, so not too much time was wasted.

This was a nice little story. Not my favorite of his, but I am more into his long novels.

Anyway, happy belated 4th everyone!

I saw in an online Stephen King Fan group that several of the members read/listen to this story every 4th. (surprising I have never read this one).

So excited to delve into this one. Its a quick listen :)

Cranberry Summer | Wende Devlin, Harry Devlin
post image

An entertaining entry in Wende and Harry Devlin's Cranberryport picture-book series, which follows the adventures of Maggie, Mr. Whiskers and Grandmother. In this installment, we have an abandoned donkey named Eliza, and the small New England town's 4th of July celebration. The artwork in this series is rather cartoon-like in style, and usually quite colorful, but the nighttime scenes seen here made use of some lovely black silhouettes as well.

Churnin's narrative here is engaging, involving, and perfectly captures the intellectual and emotional significance of Bates' best-known literary creation, the poem that would go on to become the song, America the Beautiful. The accompanying artwork of Olga Baumert, an expatriate Polish illustrator now living in the UK, is beautifully matched to the text, with a folk-art sensibility that I greatly enjoyed.

A beautifully illustrated, poetically told picture-book about the 4th of July in small town America. Happy Birthday, America!
