Already onto 8th April & this Saturday sees the start of the monthly choose your own goals Readathon, which we have now been doing for a year. This month it‘s #AwesomeApril.

Feel free to set your own goals and just join in. Very informal & loads of fun. All you need to do is choose your own goals & let everyone know what those are - books read, pages read, library books, NetGalley reviews, chapters read. Anything goes😊Be creative.

Please share.

CocoReads I cannot believe it‘s April already! I‘m in. Modest goals: 4 books done and at least start the book group book since it was my pick. 3y

Rule Britannia | Daphne Du Maurier

Pickpick

With a setting in 1972, this novel is beyond brilliant❣️Emma wakes up one morning in her Cornwall home to no phone service, no electricity, and American fighter planes are in the harbor to implement a melding of US and UK: USUK! Reminiscent of Nazi rule, the homeowners resist—great story/characters! I think du Maurier was a proponent of liberty, small government, & 1st amendment. #bookspinbingo #AAM2021

rachaich It's worth reading her early memoirs if you haven't. 3y
BookwormM I loved this one 3y
TheAromaofBooks I don't think I've even heard of this one!! I'm definitely going to check it out. 3y

The King's General | Daphne Du Maurier

This really is HF—17th century English Civil War. Not my favorite duMaurier by far. Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel have, as a whole, more engaging storylines. The writing is beautiful, but the novel seemed long and dragged for me in the middle.

Day 7: 1 audiobook, 1 ebook

1* Fascinating memoir from childhood through her marriage to husband Tom Browning, her first books, family and travels. Told primarily through diary entries. What a life she had!!

Posting my first few reviews for #AAM2021 @Soubhiville and for #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks This was a rather short audio production of this story but entertaining. I knew what to expect bc I‘ve seen the Hitchcock film several times.

TheAromaofBooks I've never read this one OR seen the film, but it's on my list for this month!!! 3y

The City We Became | N.K. Jemisin
post image
Mehso-so

The City We Became takes place in New York City, in a version of the world in which great cities become sentient through human avatars.
After the avatar of New York falls into a supernatural coma and vanishes, a group of five new avatars representing the five boroughs come together to fight their common Enemy. -Wikipedia
Love the premise and was engaged for the first 1/3, but enthusiasm dropped after that. Tough keeping track of ⬇️ #AAM2021

Eggs ➡️ characters-many sound alike. If I have to make visual aids to understand, I lose enthusiasm. Also “mother-f_____” gets old when it‘s in nearly every sentence. My last point is that for over 50% of novel, too much talking and not enough showing. #bookspinbingo #authoramonth2021 3y
Weisubei Great review!! 3y
Eggs Thanks @Weisubei 🌺 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yes, I'm reading this author's Broken Earth trilogy and it's just relentlessly depressing with way too many f-bombs for my taste. (Thankfully it's a made-up world where they also have their own words for swearing which helps cut back a bit... but apparently 'f***' is universal 🙄) 3y
Eggs @TheAromaofBooks Agreed. Last year I read one of her short stories-Amazon original-loved it, but this one not so much 3y
