Leniverse Good luck on the election, @JenP But, uh, gentle reminder to draw a May number for the 1001 TBR? We're waiting with baited breath and chewing our fingernails to the quick over there. If we have to wait until the 8th we might come to blows or start laying down bets to pass the time. 😂😅 6y
JenP @Leniverse ha ha. Thanks@for the reminder. I did draw the book but forgot to post it this morning. Will head over now to post 6y
batsy Good luck with committee elections! I'll be reading this, hopefully. Something happened in April, feel like my time is being sucked into a mysterious portal and I'm reading in slow mo 😂 6y

Been thinking a lot about this #aroundtheworld #challenge. Why should I be reading books about the US. What are they reading in Finland? Or Japan? What are their books about everyday life about?
Thank you @knittedgnome for making me think.

Swe_Eva I've been working on my own read-around-the-world-type challenge for a while now - it's very rewarding. 6y
ManyWordsLater @Swe_Eva this list is from #oneworldbooks. I would also love to know what some of your favorites have been! 6y
Swe_Eva @ManyWordsLater There are loads, but I think my top picks would be The Maias (tagged) or anything by Saramago for Portugal, Things Fall Apart (Achebe) for Nigeria, The Twin (Bakker) for Netherlands, Cutting for Stone (Verghese) for Ethiopia, A Suitable Boy (Vikram Seth) for India, and Past Continuous (Shabtai) for Israel, but that one is quite a difficult read, so perhaps go with something by David Grossman instead. 6y
knittedgnome I really am enjoying all the places this challenge is taking me! I feel like I am learning so much! 6y

knittedgnome @TheWordJar thanks for the suggestion! Put it on hold with my library. 6y

Cathy12 Takes place in India and the main character is Australian. 6y
Cathy12 Oh sorry, I missed the nonfiction part of your post, I was so excited about your coloring a reading map in a bullet journal... the only way I could be more drawn to this is if you were also eating ice cream in the bath tub when you colored it. 6y

I‘ll be posting a February recap on the blog so make sure you‘ve tagged me in any Turkey posts so that I mention your review in our blog post.

rockpools I really struggle finding South American authors here, so I currently have a choice of Mario Vargas Llosa or Mario Vargas Llosa. I've picked up this for now: 6y

JenP @mhillis I don‘t think there are many. I couldn‘t find much either. Allende was technically born in Peru but that‘s probably cheating 😬 6y

Like @Jerdencon I kept track of where the books I read this year were set. These were the most visited places.

Also visited: the North Pole, Middle Earth, Fairyland, Los Lagos, and various planets.

Jerdencon Very nice! Must be that there are a lot of books written taking place in NY and England or we have similar tastes in books since those were my 2 top places too! 6y
Susanita @Jerdencon They were all in NYC! Actually, it was the three books set in Sweden that surprised me most. 6y

So this year I kept a list of all the countries and states I read books about. It's not all that surprising to me that the most common ones were England and New York even though I didn't purposely set out to read about specific places. Might do it again this year to try to expand to more countries and states.

Kristyngansen What a fun idea! I love this and think I will do it next year. 🙂 6y

BarbaraBB Yay, there it is. Looking forward to the South American, South Korean and Russian months. And to January: I have my Iceland read ready 😘 6y
JenP @BarbaraBB what are you reading for Iceland? 6y
See All 34 Comments
Currey For Iceland, I am reading The Blue Fox by Sjon but it is only a hundred pages so I will try and read something else by him also ...maybe The Whispering Muse. I am looking forward to Turkey 🇹🇷. A friend‘s husband has promised to recommend some good authors ( he is from Turkey) 6y
BarbaraBB It is the second book by Jon Kalman Stefansson. His first was very good, I can recommend that if you haven‘t read him. It‘s called 6y
JenP @BarbaraBB thanks! I stacked it. 6y
BarbaraBB @Currey I find Turkey very difficult. I read Pamuk and know no other Turkish writers. 6y
JenP @BarbaraBB @Currey I too find Turkey hard. I look forward to seeing what books he recommends to you! 6y
BarbaraBB I am sure you‘ll like it. 6y
JenP @BarbaraBB it does sound like the sort of book I will like! 6y
BarbaraBB @JenP I know you haha 6y
batsy I'm thinking of Laxness' Independent People for Iceland. That can also be my "I" entry for #litsyclassics ? For Turkey, Pamuk seems to be the natural choice since I have a book (or two) by him, but this is supposed to be one of Pamuk's favourite authors and it does sound good 6y
JenP @batsy I liked Independent People although it was very gloomy. I haven‘t loved Pamuk but maybe I should give his books another shot 6y
Andrew65 I‘m going for Fire and Ice Series For Iceland, and will Read 6y
JenP @Andrew65 👍 sounds good! 6y
rockpools Yay! Looking forward to ALL OF THEM! (Sad, I know.) For Iceland I have a Sarah Moss book, and a book of short stories written by an Icelandic friend's Dad (which I'll only review if I like 😐)! For Turkey, I have loads of Elif Shafak on my tbr - I might read 6y
jhod I have just bought Moonstone by Sjon and looking forward to joining in! 6y
whimsy Awyis, Phil lit! I'm excited what people will do for July! 😃 (Fiction Recommendations: Carlos Bulosan, Luis Katigbak, F. H. Batacan, Gregorio Brillantes, Jose Dalisay, Lysley Tenorio, Miguel Syjuco, Rin Chupeco, Marivi Soliven, Mia Alvar). 6y
mabell This sounds like a terrific idea! 6y
JenP @mabell 😊 hope you can join us! 6y
JenP @RachelO I‘m looking forward to all of them too 😁 6y
readinginthedark Fun! I‘m doing something like this but won‘t be sticking to a certain order or one per month. I‘ll post with this if our timelines match up! 6y
TheAnitaAlvarez I‘m so in! Going to check out Icelandic authors (if anyone has a recommendation, I‘m game, especially if it‘s a female writer) 6y
Liz_M I am terrible at playing along but I will see if I can get my to tears to live up for a month here and there. 6y
JenP @Jinjer ooh, that sounds good! 6y
JenP @TheAnitaAlvarez yay! Can‘t wait to see what you pick 6y
JenP @Liz_M good luck! I always start strong then get sidetracked 6y
NicoleR1 @JenP how do I repost this so I can easily find it?! 6y
JenP @NicoleR1 you have to screenshot it then post it yourself. I also repost it at the beginning of each month. I can actually text you the photo if that‘s easier 6y
JenP @NicoleR1 also to post, you need to hit the little plus sign at bottom of screen. You can post “quotes” “reviews” or “blurbs” and you always have to attach it to a book. I some times just use a book title that matches my post topic or you can use “untitled.” 6y

Fellow #readaroundtheworld readers. I‘m trying to plan for 2018 and would like to redo this schedule so we run from Jan-Dec.

So please submit your nominations for countries to visit. Those new to the challenge - we pick books to read for each country/month and post reviews, quotes, thoughts, photos of food, etc that match the country.

I will post a revised 2018 list for Jan-December so need nominations for May-dec.

rockpools Yes to Slovenia @Simona! We need to go to Africa again (Botswana was my favourite book-journey this year). Ethiopia? 6y
JenP @RachelO we definitely need more African countries nominated! 6y
Peddler410 I‘m interested in participating for 2018! Are YA and KidsLit titles allowed? 6y
JenP @Peddler410 of course! Feel free to read any genre, format, etc. 6y
Currey I agree about Africa - Uganda and South Africa would be good and Russia 6y
JenP @Currey 👍 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes Have you done South Korea recently? I've got that on my TBR already... 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes And I think another south or Central American country would be cool. I have a book from Argentina on my list, but there are many others I'm sure I could find something cool for. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes Of course I second the calls for African countries, I don't have a preference which until I do some research. 🤓 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes I have Stay with Me on my list for next year so Nigeria would be good, but it's likely people have read more books from there than other nearby counties so I don't know. 6y
JenP @Natasha.C.Barnes do@you have a preference in country? I think I have enough spaces for each person to nominate one that will make it onto the actual list. I‘m going to post today or tomorrow 6y

BarbaraBB I am planning to read the tagged book unless @Marchpane has a good alternative (you are Australian, right, Maggie?) 6y
Marchpane @BarbaraBB guilty as charged! I haven't read that one but I've heard good things! A lot of people stacked The Trauma Cleaner from my recent post - it's fantastic but I'm not sure how easy it is to get overseas just yet. 6y
BarbaraBB @Marchpane I‘ve stacked that one after reading your review but indeed I can‘t order it right now. Book Depository says March 2018... 6y

JenP @mhillis thanks! 7y
JenP @Sue it does look good but only gets 40% picks. Did you like it? 7y
Sue @JenP I did like it! Some of the content is difficult (it's semi-autobiographical and some of the content is tough) but I really learned a lot from it. (edited) 7y
JenP @Sue thanks! 7y
batsy I've ordered this and am waiting for it to arrive! 7y
JenP @batsy 👍. This also looks good. I‘m thinking the hardest part will be deciding which one I will be reading. 7y
Wbabdullah A beautiful children's book that really highlights the plight of refugees is 7y
JenP @Wbabdullah thanks! 7y
Currey I am reading A Women in the Crossfire by Samar Yazbek. She also wrote The Crossing which has gotten good reviews but my library did not have it. If time, I also want to readThe Morning They Came For Us by Janine Di Giovanni which has gotten good reviews. 7y

Cinfhen Great @Andrew65 can't wait to see your itinerary 💕 7y
Andrew65 @cinfhen I went for 12 countries, thought I do one for every month of the year. 7y
Cinfhen I wasn't feeling that brave @Andrew65 I definitely took on too many reading challenges this year so I'm being more cautious in 2018😬 7y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen I sometimes make this mistake but thought one a month should 😬 be doable. 7y
Cinfhen You can do it!!! @Andrew65 7y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen The past 2-3 years I have lead a Round the World Challenge on Shelfari before it's demise and subsequently on Librarything but this will be the first time I have HAD to visit specific named countries. 7y

I just got my itinerary for #passportlitsy and I have to say I am feeling excited and overwhelmed A couple of these I haven‘t even heard of. Sounds like a great learning experience. Any suggestions WELCOME 😳

Notafraidofwords Esmeralda Santiago is one of my favorite Puerto Rican authors. You can start here: 7y
Bklover @Notafraidofwords Thank you!!!😊😊😊 7y
Sweettartlaura It's been a long time since I read it but I think Kazakhstan is featured in 7y
See All 18 Comments
swishandflick That's a serious list! Nothing immediately comes to mind for anything but Germany, which is probably the easiest one you've got there. If it helps, I feel like I remember a discussion on Goodreads called "Around the World in 80 books" and there are suggestions from all over. 7y
WarpedSweetness Awesome! Welcome! I got Saint Barthelemy also. 7y
Bklover @Sweettartlaura I‘ll check it out- thank you! 7y
Bklover @swishandflick I just found that group- should be a huge help, thanks!!!! 7y
Bklover 😊Now we just have to find books! Always a fun challenge! 7y
Susanita I chose this one for Qatar: 7y
Bklover @Susanita Thanks! I‘ll add it to my list! 7y
BarbaraBB For Bosnia you could read 7y
batsy I got Saint Barthélemy too and the choices I've researched are mainly romance, so far. I prefer mysteries so might go with this 7y
batsy Also next month's #readaroundtheworld is Syria and I was researching books for that and found this list that might be of help https://www.google.com/amp/s/englishatwaterloo.wordpress.com/2015/12/04/11-novel... 7y
Wbabdullah @Bklover I am also traveling to Germany for #passportlitsy. and @Notafraidofwords is right on point! I loved Esmeralda Santiago's books when I was a teen--got to meet her too! She paints the island perfectly...mi patria. A quote from that book became my fave quote to this day! "La verdad, aunque severa, es amiga verdadera." "The truth, although harsh, is a true friend." 7y
Bklover @BarbaraBB Thank you! Added it to my list! 7y
Bklover @batsy I like mysteries better too so I‘m going to use your choice as well for St Bart‘s. Thanks! Also thanks for the Syria link! 7y
Bklover @Wbabdullah That‘s great!! I‘m starting to look forward to this. This is one of the reasons I love Litsy. Makes me read outside my box! 7y
Wbabdullah @Bklover me too!! 7y

Spent the afternoon picking out and ordering books for #LitsyPassport. If you can make out my tiny writing, you'll see the treasures making their way to me.

My post master will either thank me or curse me for the Book Depository and ThriftBooks packages that will start arriving.

Natasha.C.Barnes YESSSSS I love cutting for stone! The audiobook version is so good though... 7y
ValerieAndBooks Wow! Looks interesting. Is your plan to read one per month or...?? 7y
Librarybelle @ValerieAndBooks One per month, that way I can definitely fit each book into my reading time! 7y
Librarybelle @Natasha.C.Barnes Cutting for Stone has been on my to read list for awhile. When I saw it fit one of my countries, I was thrilled! I've only heard good things about the book, so definitely looking forward to reading it. 7y

Excited for this! I started the around the world read but didn't get very far🙄 If anyone has recommendations for any of these countries let me know!

drokka I got Tokelau as well and am struggling to find anything. There seem to be a couple of professors who have written a couple of things together, but getting a copy of it seems daring. I'd have to prefer the one from the University of Auckland Press, and the other is near impossible to find for purchase. (And I can't do ebooks). 😂 7y

I got my itinerary for #PassportLitsy!

If anyone has any recommended books by authors from the places listed above, I'd love to hear them! Or for books set in those places (I'm going to try for authors, but will settle for setting if I can't find anything)

Who else is travelling with #PassportLitsy in 2018? Anyone joining me at any of these destinations and want to make it a #buddyread?

jenniferw88 Faroe islands - it's cheap on Kindle at the moment 7y

Librarybelle @TheKidUpstairs Check out @steverogers profile! There is a Google form to fill out, then she matches you with your desired number of countries. For those of you who don't know, I'm hosting a 2018 reading challenge called #PassportLitsy . You sign up and let me know how many countries you'd like to travel to next year and I email you a personalized itinerary of countries you travel to. You then pick a book that takes place in the country to read next year.

You also get access to a private GoodReads group for fellow travelers with book recs.

If you‘re interested in participating in the challenge we would love to have you 7y

Coming up for July: Spain. This should be one of our easiest counties to complete! Tomorrow I will link to our blog post for Thailand and will highlight some of the books you all read. Not gonna lie, I struggled this month with finding books (liking my current book though).

Loving the food posts so keep those coming!

July 1st we'll open it up for Spanish book recommendations #readaroundtheworld

Wbabdullah @RestlessFickleBookSlut I wish we caught July for the Spanish-language books! This is a different challenge but the same idea! I picked 11 books for my challenge via @steverogers and that seems perfect for reading one book a month from around the world! 7y
