Finished this one well ahead of our #LiteraryCrew schedule. I was enjoying too much to put it down. Great characters, and I loved how it brings to life a period and place in history (6th century Scotland) that almost never features in historical fiction. I think the next two books in the trilogy will feature more about the Merlin legend, and I‘m very much looking forward to them! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pickpick

I‘m afraid I have to disagree with Mr. King‘s assessment that this book is “one hell of a suspense novel.” The book is definitely entertaining, and I enjoyed reading it, but it was too predictable to be suspenseful. That said, I liked the characters and the interconnecting storylines. For these reasons it‘s a pick ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Bailedbailed

I‘m going against the grain with this one. I‘ve been picking this one up before bed for the last week and a bit. But I never feel like reading more than a few pages. Nothing about the book holds my attention. The book feels like it‘s trying too hard, and rather than find things amusing I‘m rolling my eyes. Lots of people love this one, so I think my bailing is simply a reflection that I don‘t do ‘cute‘ books. They just aren‘t my thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

TrishB Not mine either! 3w
Melissa_J @TrishB I‘m glad to hear that. I like the idea of ‘cutesy‘ books, but I find they rarely resonate with me. I can almost never relate to the characters, and found this to be true even when I was in my early 20s and starting out in my career. 2w

I‘m having a bit of a reading issue. I‘ve started all of these books recently (plus the tagged book on my Kobo), and I like what I‘ve read. But even though I feel like spending the evening reading, I don‘t feel like reading any of the books I have on the go right now. This has been happening to me a lot lately.

Does this happen to anyone else?

JacqMac Yes. I have given up on 6 Library books in the past couple of weeks. I returned them and put them back on hold. I just wasn‘t in the right mood. 1mo
Prairiegirl_reading All. The. Time. 😒 1mo
LauraAndTaraAndBooks Yes! I'm very much a "one book at a time" girl, so sometimes I'll start and give up on 4 or 5 consecutively and it'll be months/years before I pick them up again and invariably fall in love and find myself unable to put them down!! I usually end up breaking the reading-block with a thriller or a romance...or just a week of Netflix! 1mo
See All 10 Comments
Tamra Yes! Sometimes the current read isn‘t the kind you can‘t wait to get back to. I wish they all were. 1mo
LauraBeth This happens to me every now and again. Usually when it does, I take a mini-break from reading altogether for a week or two and do other things. 1mo
Eyelit So often. Thats when I usually binge a show on Netflix. And then try reading again 😄 1mo
Graywacke hate when that happens, and it happens to me a lot too. Sometimes there is a clear cause (like when a lunatic president gets elected and sends my mental state into a whirlwind) and sometimes there's no cause I can figure out. Stinks. 1mo
LeahBergen That‘s usually when I pick one that I‘ve read the most of and force myself back into it. 😆 1mo
CarolynM I get restless sometimes and find it hard to settle to anything. I try not to worry about and just keep trying different books until one sticks. And, like @LauraBeth said, spend some time doing something else. 1mo
Melissa_J @JacqMac @Prairiegirl_reading @LauraAndTaraAndBooks @tamra @LauraBeth @Eyelit @Graywacke @LeahBergen @CarolynM Thanks all! I‘m glad I‘m not the only one that this happens to. I haven‘t done much reading this week, so I‘ll just let myself fall back into it naturally. Other than adding a buddy read book I‘m due to start today, I‘ll just pick one of the many books I have going and read it until it‘s finished, even if it takes longer than usual. 1mo

This is one of the most thought provoking novels I‘ve read this year. The story revolves around a 16-year old girl with facial deformities who accuses 4 Muslim classmates of rape. The main character, Zara, is a lawyer turned sexual assault councilor, who also happens to be Muslim, who wants to ensure that justice is served. The narrative deals not only with sexual assault (warning), but also with religion, culture and gender. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This novel tells the story of the Trojan War largely from the perspective of Briseis, Achilles‘ war ‘prize‘. This is not a romantic retelling, it details the harsh realities faced by women captives. My only qualm with the novel? While Briseis‘s story fills most of the pages, there are some chapters told from the perspective of Achilles. They weren‘t needed. Achilles has received enough ink throughout history. He doesn‘t need more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Books full of descriptions of battle aren‘t usually my thing, but Cornwell does such a good job of them that I can‘t help but appreciate them. What makes this series, however, is the characters. It‘s hard not to like Sharpe. The book is rather violent though, although it would be hard not to be when the story centres around the Battle of Assaye. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Crazeedi I have had this series in my sight for some time. I just haven't read any yet. I need to borrow the first one and see if I like! 2mo
Melissa_J @Crazeedi have you read Patrick O‘Brian‘s Aubrey/Maturin books? If so, and you like it, you‘d enjoy this. It‘s set during the same time period only features a British Army main character instead of a Royal Navy officer. 2mo
LeahBergen My husband burned through this whole series so quickly. I‘m actually reading an O‘Brian right now. 👍🏻 2mo

Crazeedi @Melissa_J No I haven't! I will look for them, I love series, and both these sound good, and I think my husband would like too 2mo
Melissa_J @LeahBergen oh, which one are you reading? I think I‘ll pick one up myself in the not so distant future. I still have four or five to go. 2mo
LeahBergen @Melissa_J I‘m only on book 7! I haven‘t picked one up in ages but I needn‘t have worried; I was sucked right in again! 2mo
Andrew65 I spent a few years collecting the whole series from charity shops, now own them all but only read the first 3 that take place in India. @Crazeedi @LeahBergen @Melissa_J 2mo
Crazeedi @Andrew65 you'll get back to them! 2mo
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Really need to start planning them in. 2mo

Being a lover of all things Green Gables I had high hopes for this novel. While the story in and of itself was fine, as a homage to a beloved character and place it failed to live up to expectations. McCoy‘s Marilla is not consistent with Montgomery‘s, as this Marilla would never have thought of sending Anne back to the orphanage. PEI is one of the loveliest places on earth, but this book could have been set anywhere. 👇🏻

Melissa_J Furthermore, while a work of fiction, much of the historical context is wrong. This may not matter to some readers, but it does to me. 2mo
megnews How disappointing! This has been on & off my tbr because I always worry these types of books won‘t live up to expectations. Some do. Some don‘t. Too bad this doesn‘t. 2mo
Melissa_J @megnews you might enjoy it. My views are definitely in the minority. 2mo
LeahBergen I‘ll be passing on this one. 😐 2mo

I‘m liking the tagged book well enough. That said, the history included in the novel isn‘t right 🙄 The pictured passage is but one example. PEI was never part of Lower Canada. The Durham Report united Upper (Ontario) and Lower (Quebec) Canada into the Province of Canada. PEI (nor the other maritime colonies) wasn‘t part of this.

I don‘t care that this is fiction, if you‘re going to write about an actual place get your basic history right!

ulrichyumiodd I‘m quite sure Wikipedia has the right info available with a click - not to talk about any history book. That‘s such a clear lack of research! 2mo
Melissa_J @ulrichyumiodd the whole historical context of the novel is wrong - the author has situated the story as if was taking place in Upper or Lower Canada. I know a lot of readers who don‘t care if the historical component of historical fiction is accurate or not, but I‘m not one of them. It‘s ruined an otherwise ok read for me. 2mo
ulrichyumiodd @Melissa_J I might forgive some inaccuracy, but that seems pretty big to me! I don‘t understand how you can know about Upper/Lower Canada, yet not what it actually meant. (edited) 2mo

Melissa_J @ulrichyumiodd and the author kept going on about the Upper and Lower Canadian rebellions of 1837-38! They didn‘t happen in the maritimes!! Completely different places! While she may have just been trying to simplify things - let‘s face it, the large majority of this book‘s readers won‘t be at all familiar with 19th century Canadian history - I know enough that it bothered me. 2mo
rabbitprincess Ugh! Not cool. 2mo
ulrichyumiodd @Melissa_J It would bother me too! As it probably would most Canadians. 2mo
janeycanuck How did an editor not catch the errors?! 2mo
Melissa_J @janeycanuck American publisher, American author so I assume an American editor. Didn‘t know enough to even question it was wrong. 2mo

Ellie tells me it‘s high time I read this one ☝🏻

#dogsoflitsy

twohectobooks Curious how you end up liking this one! I don‘t tend to like expanded universe stuff like this but I‘m always very intrigued by it! Haha 2mo
Tamra I really enjoyed the audio. 😁 2mo

Melissa_J @twohectobooks it didn‘t live up to my expectations 😢 2mo
Melissa_J @mabell hi Mabell 🐶🐾 2mo
Melissa_J @Tamra sadly, it turns out this one wasn‘t for me. 2mo
twohectobooks @Melissa_J just went and read your review, too bad it was disappointing. 🙁 after reading some of the other reviews I feel like I might be in the mood for an Anne reread sooner rather than later though. 2mo
Melissa_J @twohectobooks I know what you mean! I kept thinking it‘s high time I revisited the actual books as I was reading this one. 2mo

Conclave | Robert Harris

Pickpick

Who knew a book about a Papal Conclave could be so interesting? As always, Harris is the master of slow burning suspense, taking the reader through a papal conclave from the point of view of the cardinal responsible for presiding over it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Crazeedi I totally enjoyed this book!! 2mo
Andrew65 I loved this one, but enjoy all his books. I read Munich earlier this month and really enjoyed it. 2mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 I have not read that one! On to the list it goes. 2mo
Andrew65 @Melissa_J It is a quick and enjoyable read, and taught me a lot about the war that almost broke out in September 1938. Hitler said in 1945 he should have gone to war in 1938. 2mo

Pickpick

The Death of Mrs. Westaway has mixed reviews, but I really liked this Gothic tale featuring an unexpected inheritance, a decaying old stately home, and family secrets. The story even features a surly old housekeeper in the mold of Mrs. Danvers. I am a fan of Ware‘s novels, but this one is a little different from her others, and if I had to pick I‘d name this book as my favourite. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cathythoughts Sounds really good 👍🏻I may just have to get it ... 😊 2mo
Tamra I liked it too! 2mo
Ashley_Nicoletto I tried to listen to the audio, but had trouble with the narrator. It‘s on my list in print. What I did listen to was good! 2mo

Here‘s hoping this Ruth Ware book is as quick to read as her previous novels!

Also pictured is my newest mug, purchased last week at Strand Bookstore during a trip to NYC with my daughter. Believe it or not, I made it out of Strand without purchasing a single book. I did, however, leave with a bunch of other bookish things.

erzascarletbookgasm Love the mug! 👍 2mo

Cross Her Heart: A Novel | Sarah Pinborough

Mehso-so

While this was a quick read, it wasn‘t as thrilling or suspenseful as I‘d hoped it would be. I found Pinborough‘s Behind Her Eyes much more memorable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
