This #chunkster is my current book before bed. Since it‘s 1000 pages long, and I only read for a short time before falling asleep (I‘m not a stay up all night and read type of gal - I need my sleep!), I‘ll probably be reading this for a good long time.

I‘m sticking with fantasy for the time being, but this book isn‘t dark like my previous read. This series is great fun, and I highly recommend it. The first book is Traitor‘s Blade.

Not sure how much I‘ll get read tonight. It‘s Victoria Day (Canadian holiday honouring Queen Victoria‘s Birthday), and the fireworks have begun 🎇

TrishB I‘ve read 3 of these and I think I have another one on the pike! Fantasy 3 musketeers 😁 4d
Melissa_J @TrishB he has another series that came out last year? The books are being released pretty quickly. I think this is the first book 3d
TrishB I‘ve seen those and am thinking I need to finish this one first! I‘ve not been in the mood for fantasy lately - it comes and goes and then I‘ll read it for months! 3d

This book is dark. It is full of violence. The main character, Prince Jorg, and his band of brothers, a motley collection of violent men, have not one redeeming quality among them. Nevertheless, I found myself strangely attached to them - probably because the world they inhabit is just as brutal and unforgiving as they are. This book won‘t be for every fantasy fan, but I‘m looking forward to the next installment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TrishB Phew.....that‘s exactly how I felt! I don‘t often recommend this to anyone because of the reasons you‘ve said. 4d

I should not be starting another book. I should be finishing those I‘m already in the middle of. The problem is that none of my in progress reads are fantasy novels, and that is the genre I‘m currently in the mood for. I believe Lawrence has several fans among Litsy folk (I think @TrishB is one of them, right?), so I have pretty high expectations for this book.

Ashley_Nicoletto This has been on my shelf for years. 5d
TrishB This is one of my fav trilogies and Jorg is a brilliant anti-hero. (I always feel I have to say it can be violent...it didn‘t bother me but I‘ve seen reviews where it did bother people). 5d
Melissa_J @Ashley_Nicoletto mine too 😊 5d
Melissa_J @TrishB thanks for the warning. I don‘t usually have issues reading violent things (although watching violent shows or movies does bother me). 5d

Kill The Father is an excellent thriller that contains memorable characters (Dante!), and a storyline that featured a mystery I wasn‘t able to suss out. The subject matter was serious, but the novel does feature some moments of levity, and I enjoyed the banter between the various characters. The translation was excellent. I am looking forward to finding out what‘s next for Colomba and Dante. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Just settling in for the evening with my book. Has anyone read this? It‘s the first in a series. I‘m enjoying it so far, and there have been a few instances where I‘ve laughed out loud at the banter between the main characters - it‘s a serious mystery/thriller so I wasn‘t expecting any humour!

Bailedbailed

Just call me The Bailer. I have no qualms about bailing on books I‘m not enjoying, even if they are the final book in a series. With respect to this series, it really should have been a trilogy. By this fourth book, which is a major #chunkster, I was beyond bored! The characters are all annoying as heck, and I care not one bit about how their stories turn out 🤷🏻‍♀️

twohectobooks I wish I could be a ruthless book quitter like this! Always by the time I reach the end of the series I feel like I have to get to the end. On the other hand, I‘m very quick to decide whether I‘ll continue a series or not, so maybe that‘s the trade off! 2w
TrishB I have become ruthless recently, no point if you‘re not enjoying! 2w
Crazeedi Too many books to waste time on ones that dont interest you! I've learned that!! 2w
See All 11 Comments
Melissa_J @twohectobooks in hindsight, I should have bailed on the third book. Oh well. There seem to be several YA fantasy series that I enjoy the first book or two of, them get bored. 2w
Melissa_J @TrishB @Crazeedi Exactly! There are too many other books out there to enjoy (and many are already on my shelves waiting 😂). 2w
Crazeedi @Melissa_J I'm with you, they're on my shelves too! Lol😉 2w
StephanieMarie I finished this book for Evangeline only, I didn't care about any of the other perspectives so I totally get it! 2w
britt_brooke I struggled through this one. God, the writing grated on me. I don‘t recall the previous books being so annoying. 2w
AlaMich It‘s like TV series that go on too long because they still draw high ratings. People will buy it, so they will write it. 1w
Melissa_J @britt_brooke I don‘t remember the previous books being this bad either. And Mare? I got so tired of her! 1w

Bailedbailed

I don‘t want to bail on this book, but after 135 pages I‘m not curious enough about the story to carry on. On paper, this should be a book I enjoy, so this might not be a forever bail. It could simply be a case of right book, wrong time.

LeahBergen I‘ve been hearing some ‘not so enthusiastic‘ reviews of this one. 😬 2w
Melissa_J @LeahBergen I just went and looked at some reviews. I think this will be a forever bail after all 😂 2w

Went to the bookstore and bought a couple of new books, but my main purpose in going was to upgrade my Plum Rewards membership to the new Plum Plus. The upgrade is currently only available at stores in Ottawa and Edmonton, but I‘m sure it will be available at all Chapters/Indigo stores soon. I think this new program is only going to further encourage my already out of control book buying habit 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 #IndigoLovesMe #BestCustomer

janeycanuck Very intrigued by the Plum Plus! I hope it rolls out everywhere soon. 3w

Plum Plus gives you all the benefits of Plum (the points), plus free shipping all the time, and 10% of everything in store and online. It‘s $35 annually. Hopefully it rolls out elsewhere soon. It‘s a much better program than iRewards or Plum by themselves. 2w

I managed to finish this #chunkster - the last book in Follett‘s Century Trilogy - earlier today. Although the book is 1100 pages, it reads relatively quickly. Follett covers an awful lot of ground here, tackling the watershed events of the 1960s to 1980s in the US, Germany and the Soviet Union. I was already familiar with the history, having studied the Cold War-era extensively in school, but I enjoyed Follett‘s take on it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Huge GoT fan here, however, I feel like I may be the only fan that doesn‘t watch the show (hello, anyone else out there?). I read the books long before the show aired, and am now worried that my whole reading experience will be spoiled because the show is being talked about EVERYWHERE! I don‘t expect people not to talk about it, but on Litsy at least, I respectfully ask that we try to be cognizant that some of us don‘t want our reading spoiled👇🏻

Melissa_J Although at this point I fully expect everything will be spoiled, and I‘ve sort of given up on the final two books anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Andrew65 I also am not watching the TV shows. What‘s the betting after the tv programme is finished those last books start to come out. I find it deeply deeply disappointing that what started out as books and the preference has been given to the tv studios and the series. Anytime someone starts to talk about the series I start to shut them down quickly. 1mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 I agree 100%. My concern is that with the show finishing they‘ll no longer be a need for the books to be published. I have no idea how many fans of the books don‘t watch the series. It seems a low number, but I might be wrong. (edited) 1mo

My daughter and I are partaking in our annual weekend in downtown Ottawa (20kms from our house 😂) for her birthday. I got here and realized that my supposedly fully charged Kobo was in need of a charge instead. Since I will have time to relax and read this weekend I had to make an emergency trip to Chapters, which is thankfully only one minute from our hotel. Picked up two books, a bookmark, and this cute tote bag 😊

AmyG Sounds lovely! Pretty bag. 1mo
Tamra What a wonderful kink in your plan! 👍🏾🙃 1mo
LeahBergen I think that Kobo was uncharged on purpose. 😂 Have fun!! 1mo

I‘m quite enthralled by this brick of a book, which is a good thing since it is almost 1100 pages! Tonight my goal is to get to the halfway mark.

Have you read this @Andrew65

Aswenson What were your thoughts on the first 2 of this trilogy? I loved pillars, and liked Fall of Giants but didn‘t get drawn into #2 of these books. 1mo
MelissaSue81 I LOVE that mug. 1mo
Melissa_J @Aswenson I really liked the first book, although it took me awhile to get into. I liked the second well enough, but felt some parts really dragged, so I can see why you had trouble with it. I think I like this one best, which surprises me a little because I don‘t usually like to read historical fiction post-WWII. The second is the weakest imho. 1mo
See All 16 Comments
Andrew65 Yes I love love love this trilogy. I didn‘t think I‘d enjoy the third book as thought not particularly interested in post war history. How wrong was I, I was totally enthralled. The bits around civil rights in the US, Martin Luther King And his I have a dream speech were truly captivating even if the racism annoyed me so much . Also really enjoyed the Kennedy parts. Funnily enough started one of his thrillers tonight on a drive 1mo
Andrew65 @Aswenson @melissa_J Loved Fall of Giants most of this trilogy, but at first took me two attempts to get into it. Third one I liked better than the second one. (edited) 1mo
Leftcoastzen These #chunksters still on my TBR .All this great commentary makes me want to move them up. 1mo
Andrew65 @Leftcoastzen You must 👍😊 1mo
Melissa_J @Leftcoastzen they are a time commitment but I find they are quick reads despite their length. 1mo
Melissa_J @MelissaSue81 thank you. It was a gift from @FantasyChick 😊 1mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 I knew I could count on you to have read it 😊 My thoughts on this final book are essentially the same as yours - I didn‘t expect to like it that much since I‘m not much into post-WWII historical fiction, but I have no idea why LOL I studied most of the political stuff (Cold War) in university and loved it — hence my degree focusing in international politics — but I rarely want to read about it in fiction 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Andrew65 @Melissa_J You know me so well! This month I‘m finally reading 1mo
Andrew65 @Melissa_J That sounds an interesting degree. 1mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 I hope you like it 🤞🏻 1mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 it was! A lot of my courses dealt with foreign policy and national/international security so there was a big historical component to them. Actually, most of the politics course I took in general had tons of history to them, which is probably why I enjoyed them so much! 1mo
Crazeedi Love follett 1mo

Set in the early 20th century, Mrs. Mike tells the story of a young woman from Boston who marries a Canadian Mountie and moves to the Canadian wilderness. Unless you‘re in Siberia, there is no winter like a good old Canadian winter so I‘m sure #ShesSoCold throughout the entire book 😂

Amiable Oh my goodness, that was one of my favorite books when I was a kid! I read it over and over again. Have you read the sequel? 1mo

It took me well over a decade to take this book off my shelves and read it. It was worth the wait! An excellent historical mystery set during the reign of Henry VIII. Matthew Shardlake is an interesting character; I will definitely continue on with this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Andrew65 A great book, and a great series. So glad you enjoyed it. I think the series only gets better. My personal favourite is Book 3 2mo
Andrew65 Also loved the latest one 2mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 I‘ve already added the next three books to my wish list. Hard to believe I don‘t already own them! 2mo

Okay @FantasyChick your #SFFS is in the mail. 🤞🏻 there isn‘t an issue - it‘s overweight (with all your goodies!) and the Post Office wouldn‘t let me add to the shipping cause it‘s a flat rate box. It‘s not overweight by a significant amount, so the Post Office thinks it will go through - they just can‘t guarantee. I‘ll track and keep you posted.

FantasyChick Yay!!! I have yours all ready to go too. I'm just trying to figure out the packing. There "might" be 2 boxes......? 2mo
