With a wavering timeline and shifting points of view, this was a dark nightmare of Peruvian storytelling. It was somewhat difficult to follow but the claustrophobic terror felt real.

This is an interesting novel, which gave me insight into the complex world of modern Peru. Llosa skilfully demonstrates its social conflicts and diversity, in a novel where the environment is almost presented as a character itself. While I was intrigued and informed by the novel, the pace and at times muddled narrative style hampered my engagement with the narrative somewhat. Llosa writes well, but there is some unrealised potential here.
