This was my #ReadAroundTheWorld challenge book for July - #Lebanon. It‘s a book lover‘s book, that‘s for sure- full of references across literature and a main character who comes fully to life here. The book is more of a character study in a lot of ways and I think would be perfect for book clubs or other discussion groups looking for a fresh voice. The audio version was great, too! The format worked really well- and not just for #AudioColoring!

This book is about contemporary Nativity - birth of the healing energy, and the story/allegory is dense packed with symbolism, magical realism, philosophy, metaphysical questions ... I liked the first part of the story where Maria and Joseph arrived in the village, but I was lost in the second part when strange things started ... too heavy in symbolism, and the writing in the second part is too experimental for my taste.

Simona Reading ahead for #ReadAroundTheWorld #Cyprus 🇨🇾 3d
Emilymdxn Sounds interesting! I often like experimental prose so might give it a go. I don‘t think I‘ve ever read anything from Cyprus at all 3d
Simona @Emilymdxn It was my first book from Cyprus author too, interesting, thoughtful premise, but too heavy execution for me ... I‘m almost sure that you will like it 😘 3d

This is nonfiction book (but with very strong fiction vibes), biography of author‘s mother, which was married at 14 against her will with her brother-in-law. The story is of course sad and heartbreaking, but unfortunately I can‘t say that I like it. I was missing something ...

#1001books #readaroundtheworld So I did a thing. I mostly cleaned up the nationalities from the complete GR list of authors in the tagged book. Then I got a complete list of countries/sovereign states. Then I combined the two. It should be viewable here: https://bit.ly/30y0xg7. Might add column for #readwomen later.

Read harder AND smarter, Littens. I don't know if I'll ever real all 1200+ books, but I want to read as diversely as possible.

Lucy_Anywhere Wow - awesome goal! Good luck 👏 6d

Started this one last night for #readaroundtheworld #lebanon - think I‘m going to enjoy this story of an older lady living alone with her books. Opening line:

“You could say I was thinking of other things when I shampooed my hair blue, and two glasses of red wine didn‘t help my concentration”

TorieStorieS I just got the audio version to listen to in July! 3w
Theaelizabet This sounds really good! 3w
Nute You reminded me that I had a high interest in this book. Keep me posted on your thoughts.🙂 3w

#ReadAroundtheWorld #Swaziland

3 Stars

Not the best book in the world but it does give an insight into a specific time and place in Swaziland and it is by a Swazi author.

Full review here https://thereadersroom.org/2019/06/23/read-around-the-world-swaziland/

RachelO I read your review with interest. I actually deleted my post about the Swazi book I was reading on the basis ‘if I didn‘t have anything nice to say‘ - would‘ve got along with it a lot better had she set it in Eswatini with characters her own age 🙁. But I did read one!! 3w
BookwormM @RachelO this was a hard month to find a book for looking forward to Lebanon. What was so bad about your book choice? 3w

I don‘t like when the narrator of the story is child, and after reading this book set in Eswatini (former Swaziland) I didn‘t changed my mind. I liked descriptions of the nature and brief glimpse into the dynamics of life in Eswatini, but everything else in this book was too sweet for me - from story, characters to prose ... but I did get some serious craving for eating cakes 😁

Search for a lost city in the middle of the desert is a very interesting and exciting content, even more interesting than just a physical search was for me the author‘s research of myths, legends, traditions ... and how he linked them with the reality. This nonfiction book is a nice story about human curiosity, archeology, anthropology and interesting window to the unknown (for me) Arabian ancient history. Between 3 and 4 ⭐️

Cathythoughts Sounds good ! I‘m stacking for my husband.. a future birthday present.. I think he would love this 2mo
Simona @Cathythoughts If he likes adventure/history nonfiction this is a good gift, but I have to warn you that the first part of the book, Myths, is quite ‘heavy‘ and detailed. 2mo

BookwormM Sounds interesting have you got anything lined up for Swaziland 2mo
Simona @BookwormM Yes, When Hoopoes Go to Heaven by Gaile Parkin and Teaching English in Swaziland by Sarah Mkhonza. I found both of them on Scribd. When I was searching for some Swaziland authors I also found this https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-43821512 2mo
