From one of Koreas literary stars, a novel about two orphans from the streets of Seoul: one becomes the head of a powerful motorcycle gang, and the other follows him at all costs In South Korea, underground motorcycle gangs attract societys castoffs. They form groups of hundreds and speed wildly through cities at night. For Jae and Dongyu, two orphans, their motorcycles are a way of survival. Jae is born in a bathroom stall at the Seoul Express Bus Terminal. And Dongyu is born muteunable to communicate with anyone except Jae. Both boys grow up on the streets of Seoul among runaway teenagers, con men, prostitutes, religious fanatics, and thieves. After years navigating the streets, Jae becomes an icon for uprooted teenagers, bringing an urgent message to them and making his way to the top of the gang. Under his leadership, the group grows more aggressive and violentand soon becomes the polices central target. A novel of friendshipworship and betrayal, love and loathingand a searing portrait of what it means to come of age with nothing to call your own, I Hear Your Voice resonates with mythic power. Here is acclaimed author Young-ha Kims most daring novel to date.

Pickpick

This was my #SouthKorea pick for #ReadAroundTheWorld and it‘s definitely a unique read that displays a side of Seoul that I knew nothing about! The characters are vividly drawn and the different perspectives bring together an unusual whole. While not my favorite read for the challenge, it‘s one that I‘m glad to have read!

JenP Sounds interesting. 6y

Pickpick

This is a south korean story about growing up in poverty. Really 3 distinct parts, youth of the 2 main characters, their teenage years growing apart due to class differences and the ways they each find to make their way. This is bleak in many ways and if you have triggers for violence against children and sexual assault and violence against women avoid this book. Well written with empathy towards disaffected youth who band together in violence.4⭐️

daena Is this the next book? I am behind on my book tube videos. 6y
Booksnchill @daena it is, it is February. I am listening to it at 1.5 speed on Hoopla app and it is great- the narrator is very slow so that is working for me! I am 3 hour in and it is a 7ish hour book- good so far! 6y

I‘m currently “supposed to be” catching up on my Research Methods class reading. I am so dang behind from the kids being out all last week from ATL‘s unexpected snow. But then the first of my Book Depository order was delivered today...so you know I need to fully inspect my books 😉

cathysaid You're in #ATL as well? There are several of us here! 6y
