Just finished this work of art today—loved it! Loved John Green‘s treatment of health (especially mental health in this one), and grief. Loved how I had to look up some art and music to see what the characters were seeing and that I wanted to do that. Characters ring true to life and are believable. Will be looking for anything else John Green publishes!

TrishB Hi 👋 long time no post! I enjoyed this book too. 5y

I enjoyed this audiobook and the author‘s premise that we are a society tearing itself apart from the inside because we don‘t act like a unified tribe...like a real community that soldiers-now-veterans had (when they were in war) and like traditional native and indigenous communities have. And the result is our violence and national PTSD. Without community and compassion to see our common humanity and struggle, we are all just dead inside.

Wbabdullah I enjoyed this comparison between soldier‘s units and tribal societies. Makes you think about why people are so depressed when we AREN‘T going through tough stuff together that erases the divisive lines we‘ve drawn... 6y

So this is a book for people who need discipline with themselves and others in order to get stuff accomplished... and live the life they want like not being spread too thin, and being on time, and not feeling manipulated or abused. A good wake up call with a heavy Christian current running through it but beneficial therapy for me at this particular point in my life. I‘ve learned to be more responsible for my own life and things are getting done!

Wbabdullah Additionally, I‘d just like to say to anyone else who has issues setting limits with themselves or others, when you say “yes” to something, you say “no” to something else, and when you say “no” to something, you are saying “yes” to something else. We choose which doors open and close—and need to take ownership for it. 6y

OMG. How did I not read this until now? I just spent 5-6 hours between last night and today devouring this perfect little book. I mean I gobbled it up, cried, sniffed, captured a lot of quotes. It was just perfect. I don‘t give a 5/5 easily, but this author...I mean, he just seems to understand humanity, emotion, anxiety, teenagers...the writing was so real and exquisite, completely human and humane. Tell me, would I like Turtles All the Way Down?

britt_brooke I liked Turtles All the Way Down. I wasn‘t so sure about the mystery aspect, but I liked the characters a lot. 6y
youneverarrived I preferred this to Turtles All the Way Down but I still liked it a lot. Another one you‘ll probably fly through. It‘s a great book. 6y

@Bookworm83 @tpixie I feel so dense. This is what my home screen looks like. I don‘t see any messages...or hashtags! How do I get to the messages on this platform. It is only giving me customization settings links.

tpixie Hmm what happens if you clink on the lines top left? 6y
tpixie Have you downloaded the app on your phone? 6y
Wbabdullah I‘ve tried to download the app several times, but it won‘t download. So I‘ve been trying to use it through the browser on my phone but it is only allowing me to see settings not messages. tpixie Snap. Do you have e an android? I know people were having a hard time downloading the Litsy app with android through Google play so they went through Amazon to do it. I don‘t know why it won‘t download on your phone?! Maybe your phone is full? 6y
tpixie I tried logging in using the web browser but couldn‘t figure it out even how to get in! 6y
tpixie @Wbabdullah I bet if you can‘t even download the app, it means that your storage space on your phone is maxed out. You might see if there‘s two or three apps that you could get rid of for the long weekend and then put them back on when we‘re done with the festival. Probably should be apps that you remember your password for although a lot of them have password recovery options 6y
Bookworm83 @Wbabdullah I wish I could help, but all I can think of is @tpixie suggestions above 👆🏻 Maybe email customer service? 6y
Wbabdullah Thanks @tpixie! I have an iPhone, and the app said if needed to send a code through my PayPal or something and it never did. And I downloaded apps afterwards (Netflix) to make sure I had space—something fishy is going on! But I appreciate your help—I‘m planning on camping out near the children‘s stages anyway. Most of the authors I want to see will be there and since I‘ll have my kids, I probably won‘t have time to meet up with you co-Littens :/. 6y
tpixie @Wbabdullah well how weird and frustrating!! @bookworm83 I think may also spend time at the kids stage. I‘ve never been but there are so many neat activities for kids and such great authors for the kids I think you will have fun!! 6y
tpixie @Wbabdullah oh!! Try this. With the link that @Bookworm83 sent, there are some numbers at the end of the link maybe try those numbers! If worse comes to worse we could just communicate through Litsy! Have fun!!! 6y
Bookworm83 @Wbabdullah I will be near the kids area, too! I really want to see Chris Grabenstein. 6y
Wbabdullah @Bookworm83 I didn‘t realize the author of the limoncello series would be there! I‘m still trying to buddy read that with my 9 year old. I‘m looking forward to seeing Matt de la Peña, Jacqueline Woodson, and Jewell Parker Rhodes. 6y

Just finished this one. Feel good rom com...mode my lips turn up at the corners a bit! Now I‘m off to see the Netflix version! I think I‘ll like the text better though than seeing grown folks trying to play high schoolers navigating their feelings of what love is...🧐

Parable of the Talents | Octavia E. Butler
Mehso-so

So I finally finished. I found the different voices between estranged mother, child, and father to be interesting at first. In the end, I just felt sad and sorry for the messy situation that happened to the family that created those estranged voices. What makes this book so-so for me is that it just ended abruptly and haltingly. I didn‘t appreciate that after investing substantial energy into living these characters‘ lives 😂.

Wbabdullah I liked Parable of the Sower more than this sequel. It seemed to have more life, energy and passion—perhaps because Lauren was so young then. Parable of the Talents seemed to dry out, writing-wise, just like most adults do-getting fixated on certain dreams and cycles that never really reconcile themselves, such as the age-old problem of using religion to manipulate people and situations. Toxicity alert! 6y
Wbabdullah What Butler has going for her is that the problems in The Earthseed series are commentary on how we as people actually live life and I know she is urging us toward CHANGE (I mean that‘s the whole Earthseed doctrine right there), but it‘s gonna take some head scratching to figure out how. I thought I would‘ve loved this more 😩 6y

Beautiful book championing girls' education and indentured servitude in Pakistan. I enjoyed this much more than Written in the Stars. The plot was easy to digest and "easy" on the heart. Women seem bound to have a Cinderella narrative as a part of their lives whether in the "1stworld" or "3rdworld". There‘s always some evil plot to get us to do the cleaning, cooking, and maid work when we are not only capable but also driven to do so much more.

Wbabdullah A book that champions hard-working, driven, go-getting girls who don't take anything off of anybody. I can‘t wait to add this to our home library shelves for the children to read. Good, clean social justice YA. 6y

This is gonna be a long one so brave yourselves as I have a monologue replying to myself to give you everything this book has got. WOW. What a voice this anthology has...as a group of different, diverse voices! It's a symphony of solos that touch each other, and it's worth your time...just like the best acapella.

Wbabdullah The whole book is about acceptance vs. tolerance, and coming to grips with reality. The stories are majorly accessible and relatable even if you can‘t quite fit into the shoes of the main character. This anthology, at its essence, is, more than anything, about LOVE, especially love of self (in a totally non-conceited way). It‘s about embracing all of what makes you you even with all of your quirks—so important in YA—identity struggles are real! (edited) 6y
Wbabdullah There were only two stories I didn‘t really enjoy, giving them 2/5 because they were hard on the reader to relate to...and the style of writing. You can read my 4-star review of Fresh Ink: An Anthology by Lamar Giles on Goodreads:

Just finished this in 4 days after being on my TBR forever. A bit dark, but highly probable and believable. It‘s pretty depressing and I thought I‘d like it more as a major fan of dystopia and Octavia, but it‘s only 3/5 for me. I liked the preview of Parable of the Talents that came at the end more...I think hearing more voices and narratives than just Lauren‘s point of view is more intriguing. We shall see!

Teenage angst & curiosity. Questions whether love is worth the pain it causes. To care can be a gift and curse. Yeah, this one has YA stamped all over it. Not bad-the creativity of each chapter‘s design held my interest-but so predictable unlike The Sun is Also a Star, which I liked SO much more. I can‘t bring myself to watch the movie. But I will check out the MC‘s reading list and pick up a copy of The Little Prince and The Bluest Eye. 😉

Finished this last Saturday 4/28/18 and enjoyed it. Makes me want to write a prayer journal myself. I could relate to a lot of her sentiments..I wonder if Flannery ever read Rumi? Her words resound those of the mystics...we would have def been friends and gone to dinner parties together had we crossed paths in this life. It‘s nice that we are crossing paths through literature. Picked this up because Flannery is mentioned in Saints & Misfits.

Wbabdullah I find myself curiously finding my next TBRs in books and authors given shouts outs to in my current reads. Looks like The Little Prince and The Bluest Eye are next from Nicola Yoon‘s Everything, Everything. 6y

Beautiful, inspirational and a literary delight to the senses! I just can‘t get over the fact of how much she accomplished given deafness and blindness. She lived stubbornly to pave her own path to joy. A lesson in gratitude and vulnerability and bravery to anyone who‘s game to listen. I wish she wrote more...do you know she loved to crochet and knit, too?!?

“Literature is my utopia.”

Just finished an audiobook of Helen Keller‘s autobiography with my kids and Helen Keller and I totally would have been friends. She speaks of book friends, tree friends, and overcoming adversity. She was a reader before she was even able to talk or write and loved the friendship of books...they never looked down at her or discriminated against her. How many lives we can live through literature!

noush I just was about to read this book! Wow! What a beautiful description. I would have been friends with Helen Keller too! :) 6y

I went on a little adventure today with my mom for her bday. We found this place in B‘more where the books are COMPLETELY and TOTALLY FREE! A keeper! I read this book with my 8 y.o. to discuss and compare/contrast with the new movie remake of it. I enjoyed the movie and finished the book after the movie. I felt in awe with both. I love the themes in this book on equity vs. equality, on light vs. dark, on the power of love and pure essence...I was surprised at how deeply spiritual this book was and can‘t wait to read more from the Quintet. I hope the succeeding books don‘t disappoint!

Wbabdullah I also loved how real our main protagonist is...flawed and fearful, a rebellious girl who stands up for what she believes in! Positive strong messages in this book for the world we live in and I think it was even more important for Disney to make the movie multicultural! There‘s an emphasis on blue eyes in the book...and there are so many other colors of eyes in the world... 6y

Confession#2: I dislike meal photos on social media.
After reading about Korean culture in this novel (esp. food), I saw kimchi at the grocery store and couldn‘t resist. It probably doesn‘t taste as good as it would in a restaurant but I just yearned to be closer to the characters! It‘s not so bad! Spicy, sour, and would go well w/ some bread and hummus in my book! Hmmm...I considered giving 2 reviews, one non-spoiler, one def spoiler cuz I wanted to vent about what was happening in the book so bad. Wanted to punch and curse out a few folks & say WTF or WTH?? But I‘m gonna take a step back and say, if I have emotions like these surrounding a fictional character about what does happen to some in real life, then I guess that‘s pretty good writing. While there was nothing spectacular about the writing style👇🏽

Wbabdullah It was a book that needed to be written and needs to be read...for #ownvoices, for authentic voices, for diversity, for #social justice, for #womensrights, for #humanrights. And I guess that‘s about all I can without wanting to go beat someone up...as for the triggers, I‘m a sensitive reader and viewer and I could take this one. The author laid it on low and with subtlety so that the reader doesn‘t hurt as much as the protagonist does. 6y
Wbabdullah The book would actually probably be better and more poignant if she did make the reader feel more like the protagonist, but then again, I probably wouldn‘t have been able to read it then 😬. Some folks are really messed up. Some parents are really selfish, thinking they are doing what‘s best for their children when it‘s really in their own self-interest. 6y
Wbabdullah And duh! The obvious solution to the whole darn dilemma was to make her love connection halal and legal by helping her marry Saif in the first place, not trying to marry her to some darn stranger in Pakistan. But her parents were really selfish fools and I guess there are some of those in the world too. So happy Saif and his folks weren‘t. I‘m just shaking my head now. 6y

Written in the Stars | Aisha Saeed
post image

Just started Written in the Stars, then will follow it up with The Bloodprint. Two books by Muslim female authors with ethnic origins in the Indian subcontinent. One of my resolutions this year is to get over my debilitating fears, anxieties, and grief from the past so I can move onward and upward—forward march! Saeed is talking about fears and control issues I know all too well. Loving it so far but anxious as to what I‘ll be hit with.

Cinfhen 💕💕 6y
ZoeyPeacock I‘m trying to do the same. ❤️ 6y
DGRachel I love Ausma Zehanat Khan! I hope you enjoy The Bloodprint as much as I did. 6y

Wbabdullah @ZoeyPeacock ❤️❤️❤️ maybe we can work on it together through recommended reads! If I come across some great reads on fear, grief, and anxiety, I‘ll recommend them to you! For instance, have you read/listened to 6y
Wbabdullah @DGRachel I hope I love it too! Have you read her mysteries yet? The Omar Khattak series? I briefly cracked open the first one but couldn‘t get into it then.:: 6y
ZoeyPeacock I haven‘t but I do have it on audio. And I would love that. 6y
DGRachel Yes, I‘ve read them all and have the 4th on preordered. I‘m a huge fan of hers and she‘s wonderfully engaging and sweet on Twitter. 6y
Wbabdullah @ZoeyPeacock I‘ve started it on Audio but haven‘t finished it yet. I think I probably have 2-3 more hours to go, just have to push through! I‘m more of a visual kinesthetic learner than an audio one but I do enjoy the read!! 6y
Wbabdullah @DGRachel I didn‘t even know there was a fourth! 6y

When I Was the Greatest | Jason Reynolds
Pickpick

It was so nice to wake up this morning and finish this—Jason Reynold‘s first book. If you are a knitter, into diverse reads, social justice, spectrum disorders, urban black studies, esp. regarding youth, you‘ll appreciate this. I‘ve read a few of his works but now am committed to reading all of the author‘s works. I now know why the title is as it is, but why does the cover clearly feature a crocheted gun rather than a knitted one?! 🤦🏽‍♀️🤣😂☺️

I‘ve never been to The Last Bookstore in LA but will now have to put it on my bucket list...Wow! Now this is how decorating with books should look! ❤️👌🏽👍🏽😍 I‘m learning a lot from IG today.

readordierachel Swoon! 6y
GondorGirl It's not the best bookstore for shopping, but you can't beat it for awesome decor and photo ops. That store is literally the only thing I miss about doubt shows in LA. 6y

Decorated To Death | Dean James

Someone posted this photo on IG today...it‘s supposed to be an upcycled chandelier I guess and it‘s in a nearby mall. But I‘m a bit hurt by it. I know it‘s upcycling...but it looks like a bad way to treat books. What do you think? I was taught that books had feelings too as a child...I don‘t write, underline, or highlight in them...let alone string them up by their covers!!😭😡🤬

Wbabdullah Maybe it wouldn‘t be so bad if they were all closed...but the ones that are a bit open..that just looks painful for the books! 6y
theresidentromantic There's classy book chandelier and then there's a thing that looks like they're being tortured :( 6y

BEST OF RAY BRADBURY | Ray Bradbury
post image

The picture cut off Farewell Summer. Looks like I need to add quite a few to my TBR. I‘ve only read Fahrenheit 451, but it remains one of my fave novels to this day. Just sayin‘. #dystopianblues

britt_brooke I need more Bradbury in my life, too! I‘ve only read Fahrenheit 451 as well; planning to reread it this year. 6y
Wbabdullah You and I are on the exact same page! :) pun intended!! @britt_brooke 6y

Dear Martin | Nic Stone
Pickpick

Just finished Dear Martin in time for MLK‘s bday! Yaaaaaaas! Goal achieved! Quick read for me. And good. Liked the characters and made me smile...but if I were to put it up against The Hate U Give, I think The Hate U Give is a much stronger heavyweight and more fascinating read though they both deal with similar subject matter. The Hate U Give inspired me to action and awoke an activist spirit within me whereas Dead Martin preached to the choir.

EllieDottie This is on my to read shelf! I loved The Hate U Give! 6y

Hey fellow Littens! One of my main goals of 2018 is to finish writing one of the few stories that tell themselves to me in my head. There is a question I‘ve been asking myself for quite a while now...and I need help! Though I‘m a big reader of dystopia, I have no idea what I‘d bring if my reality turned into the above and I had limited time to leave home. Will you help me out? #dystopianblues Thanks!!

EchoLogical Food and water. 😅 6y
EchoLogical It's completely unoriginal but it's what I'd bring. My husband said: his rucksack filled with alcohol, peroxide, socks, a machete, clothes, his multi-tool and Camel back, gloves, and something to start a fire, a poncho, and cans of food (or MREs) and maybe his sleeping bag. Depending on the weight. 🤣🤣🤣 6y
julesG My beloved sturdy rucksack filled with my Swiss Army knife, a solar charger, my kindle (loaded with survival guides), a few packets of bandaids, gauze/muslin bandages, medical charcoal and ibuprofen, at least one roll of duct tape, several packets of matches, and as much bottled water as I could carry. Plus, several layers of clothes and the best pair of boots I own (by best I mean sturdy yet not too clunky). 6y

Wbabdullah Wow @EchoLogical And @julesG! Thank you! Some food for thought—I need to check the bug out bags...gonna have to give y‘all a shout out if I 1)finish the book 2)get it published 😍☺️🤣 (edited) 6y
EchoLogical @Wbabdullah Of course my husband had a million questions about the circumstances but I told him to answer in general terms. 😂 6y
Wbabdullah @EchoLogical 🤣😂 I know my main character won‘t really know where she‘s going...so perfect answer! 6y
Bklover Food, books, bug spray, and duct tape. 6y
DebbieGrillo I'm diabetic... So meds for sure. 6y
Velvetfur I would have a ready-packed survival rucksack for just such an occasion, but I would also take sentimental stuff like old family photos and letters/notes from them. 6y
CouronneDhiver A bag with a knife, duct tape, alcohol wipes, water, a tarp and a rope. Should be able to get by... 6y
Wbabdullah @Bklover @DebbieGrillo @Velvetfur @CouronneDhiver wow such great answers! I like where you are going with this! I‘m going to have to add rope, tarp, and duct tape to my list! @Velvetfur I was feeling that sentimental items might be good for sanity...and history...which reminds me, I have a lot of albums to make for my family. Thanks so much for answering my question ladies!! 6y
Velvetfur Aaww you're so cute! You're welcome 👍 6y
SpeculativeFemale I don't think I could list everything we have in our family bug out bags, but some basics include extensive emergency medical supply kits, water containers and filtration with extra filters, solar chargers for devices and independent batteries, reflective emergency blankets, simple rations, bandanas, gloves, hats, breathing masks with extra filters, simple sewing/repair kits, and too much more to fit in the character limit, LOL. 6y
Wbabdullah @SpeculativeFemale thank you! We have family bug out bags too! But I wonder what the average person would just pack up on a whim...the first things that come to mind and all, you know?! We should talk @SpeculativeFemale ! R u on GR? 6y
SpeculativeFemale @Wbabdullah Goodreads? I think I have an account from ages ago, but I never really used it much. 6y
Wbabdullah Yep Goodreads. I‘m just getting reacquainted with my account-I much prefer Litsy! Are you participating in #dystopianblues @SpeculativeFemale ? 6y
SpeculativeFemale @Wbabdullah No, I hadn't heard about it. I might have to check it out, but honestly, I'm in a rereading spell right now while I'm adjusting to a new job. I've been coming home each day a little too brain-fried to read anything new at the moment. 😂 6y
Wbabdullah Aw it‘s ok! Maybe u can catch it next time around—it‘s a swap for dystopian books! Congrats on the new job @SpeculativeFemale ! Enjoy your rereads! 6y

MidnightBookGirl Ready Player One is an all ti.e favorite! 6y
Wbabdullah @MidnightBookGirl yes it is! I can‘t wait for the movie to come out!! 6y
ElishaLovesBooks Wow! That‘s a lot of languages!😊 6y
Wbabdullah @ElishaLovesBooks I secretly want more! Like Japanese, Chinese, or Indonesian, maybe Turkish?...🤭🤫but for now, I‘m just gonna try to keep my head on straight. And keep the languages and sanity I‘ve got!!🤣😂 There‘s always room for improvement, too!! 6y
tricours How good is your Arabic and Russian? Mine are Swedish, Norwegian, French and Russian, and I can read in Polish and somewhat in German, and Old Russian and Old Church Slavonic! 6y
Wbabdullah Amazing!!! My Arabic is the weakest but I can read and write in both Arabic and Russian, so that‘s a plus. And I can get around and get things done in strange countries :). Go shopping, you know, the important things. It‘s nice how knowing a few languages opens you up to others in the same family—I def can understand a good bit of French, Portuguese, and Italian but I only know a few phrases in each of those! @tricours 6y

Blade So Black | L L McKinney
post image

I‘m not big on the fantasy genre, but this book is too tempting to pass up! It‘s not out yet—not until September—but write it down—A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney. Folks are calling it Alice in Wonderland meets Buffy Vampire Slayer. Here‘s the sneak peek of the cover and opening pages: http://ew.com/books/2018/01/10/ll-mckinney-a-blade-so-black-sneak-peek/

Awkward | Svetlana Chmakova
Pickpick

Oh my goodness. If you work with children, especially in the middle grade age range, you need this book. Checked out this book from the library and totally adding it to the “to buy” list. The way the author approaches diversity and bullying in the subject matter is enough to win me over but the prose was great too! You‘re missing out if you haven‘t read it! I haven‘t read Brave but my 8 y.o. says Awkward is more about being brave than Brave is!

Wbabdullah Also..I finished this in under 2 hours. It was that good. 6y
Wbabdullah And all the pictures I would‘ve shown you of pages in this book would totally be spoilers so get your own copy and crack it open...and read it in under 2 hours. Ready? Set. Go! 6y
