Cindy, what great choices! Thank you so much! I totally have almost bought the tagged book no less than 5 different times, but it has just never quite made it home with me. I will probably be reading both books quite soon 🥰 #oldmeetsnewgiveaway @Cinfhen

Cinfhen The Preston book is awesome!!! I loved it - I took a chance on the Allende... thanks for playing #oldmeetsnew 2d

Pathogens have no boundaries; they are the ultimate travelers; they go wherever there‘s human fuel. We First Worlders have become far too complacent in the idea that disease, especially NTDs [neglected tropical diseases], can be quarantined to the Third World, and that we can live safely in our communities supposedly gated against pathogens, ignoring the suffering of the poor and sick in faraway lands.

I loved The Lost City of Z. And I‘m loving this. I think I have a thing for reading about people who are brave enough to walk into jungles and rainforests that are literally designed to kill anything foreign that happens to tread on their grounds.

I was having a hard time waking my brain up today, so my husband and I each read a bit while waiting for our #brunch (it was delicious!). I don't drink coffee and IHOP doesn't serve chai, so hot chocolate was a welcome substitute.

My Blind Date book from Indie Book Day is so good so far! A nonfiction chronicle of the search for a lost city in Honduras with an Indiana Jones meets Jon Krakauer vibe. Fascinating! (Though jungle snakes are scary!)

hermyknee Oooh that book sounds good and your hot chocolate looks delicious! 1mo

Reading partially like a history book and part like a expedition journal, The Lost City of the Monkey God was able to keep my interest throughout. I found myself looking up photos of fer-de-lances and leishmaniasis, imagining what it was like in the jungle. To celebrate finishing the book and to keep the sense of adventure going, I went paddleboarding this morning down the river.

It is amazing that with all of the achievements of the human race, there are still ancient civilisations that are a mystery to us. Whose cultures are forgotten, and whose cities are hidden in thick expanses of impenetrable jungle, untouched by humans in hundreds of years.

This was an interesting and decade spanning journey, and I loved how easy it was to follow. Douglas does an amazing job of describing the work that went into...cont👇🏻

Bookworm54 ...researching potential sites, the use of lidar in the initial scans, and the ground truthing of one of the sites found by lidar. He also delves into the hardships and perils of jungle living, deforestation, and looting of sites of archaeological importance.

We still know so little of the people who once populated the large cities in the Mosquitia Jungle, neighbouring the Mayan cities, and I hope that one day we are able to find out more!

I don‘t think I enjoyed this as much as y‘all did @cinfhen @GlassAsDiamonds I didn‘t enjoy the audiobook at all. (The narrator wasn‘t that great.) And when I switched back to print, I had kind of lost my enthusiasm. It‘s still a pick, just not a superstar one.

Cinfhen Too bad, Meg. Still glad you shared the adventure with us. 4mo

My usual background blue chair is being reupholstered so I‘ve gone green!

Many many thanks to @Cinfhen and @Megabooks for prodding to me read this one, it was thoroughly worth falling behind my #Booked2019 list! Part narrative history, part archeology, part study of humanity, part epidemiology and part examination of Old World hubris, The Lost City of the Monkey God is an engrossing, wild ride that I highly recommend.

Cinfhen The green compliments the book cover! Great review 🙌🏻so glad you joined our little buddy-read😁 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen thanks for prodding me into it!!! So glad I finished that one before it spends time in a shopping container, SUCH a good book!! 😂😂😂 Reminded me a little of a book on Theodore Roosevelt‘s exploration of the Brazilian Rio Roosevelt/ Rio Teodoro which was also excellent. 😊 (My Booked Winter pile is however, now a tad dire !!! 😂😂😂😂) 4mo

I‘m going to make the next anti-vaxer I meet read this chapter (& if you‘re indeed anti vaccine, I challenge you to spend a month working with polio survivors in subcontinental India where the disease still claims lives, then get back to me). Less facetiously, I‘d read something similar on disease effects on Indigenous populations in North America but it‘s still staggering each time.

Bookcation74 I highlighted this portion too, for the same reason! 4mo
CarolynM Preach🙌 The Indigenous population of Australia too. 4mo
Cinfhen I too, was stunned. 4mo

Weaponxgirl This book talks about it in a great way too. I want any anti Vaxer to read it and still tell me it‘s healthier at the end 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM I was wondering about that actually - has anyone (surely someone had?) done an epidemiological study on the effects of Old World diseases on Australia‘s indigenous populations? I‘d guess it would be similar but maybe not because of our proximity to Indonesia? 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen The tagged also touches on the effect of epidemics in North America, noting mounds of cities that are very little excavated and the fallacy of the majority of Indigenous peoples being mainly nomadic tribes.... those just happened to be the people who survived the longest. 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl I have a sneaking suspicion you may also enjoy my current impulse buy 4mo
Weaponxgirl @GlassAsDiamonds I have that on my tbr! 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl I‘m reading it now and.... wow. Humanity... 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4mo
Weaponxgirl @GlassAsDiamonds we are....unique? 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl we‘re such short memoried MORONS!!! (Having passed the “he helped 3 billion people live but invented some of the worst chemical weapons ever used without conscience or mercy” chapter, I‘m now on the Eugenics chapter which reads like certain political tweets only we know that these led to mass sterilisation and ultimately the Holocaust..... 🤯🤯🤯) (edited) 4mo
Weaponxgirl @GlassAsDiamonds eugenics is terrifying! 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl I tell you what, on one hand, this book is a fast read. On the other, it is so clinically horrifying that I‘m having to stop after certain chapters to decompress. The banality of evil is an apt description for so many of these. 4mo
trigeekgirl And this is why I research and get every potentially useful immunization before I travel. It is also the reason I am on my second yellow vaccination record book. 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @trigeekgirl smart!!!!! As an aside, have you had the rabies vaccine? Many people say not to get it because you need shots once bitten but if you‘ve had the first ones, you only need days 0,3 and 7 of the course which is MUCH easier when travelling than having to stick around for 28 days for the full five injections. 4mo
trigeekgirl @GlassAsDiamonds Weirdly, yes, but not due to travelling. I was bitten by a feral kitten once. Doctors get quite twitchy about that. :) 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @trigeekgirl 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂 That‘ll do it!!! (Mine was an unvaccinated stray Labrador 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️) 4mo

This true account of Douglas Preston‘s spectacular quest into the Honduran rain forest has a crazy Indiana Jones feel to it, yet this was a serious scientific expedition. The lure of an ancient treasure & curse only adds to the adventure, proving there are still places on Earth that are uncharted and contain multitudes of history waiting to be unearthed. And it‘s a super fascinating story🐲🌴🐒 Highly recommend

“By invading the valley, we were like clueless civilians wandering onto a battlefield and getting shot to pieces in the crossfire.” Preston explaining what happens when man enters regions of the planet where they are not meant to be. I‘m LOVING this book @Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds ( not so much my green detox smoothie 🤢) I thought this passage was pretty ominous. “It amazes me that a valley so primeval and unspoiled could still exist in the twenty-first century. It was truly a lost world, a place that did not want us and where we did not belong.” #FamousLastWords #11

AmyG Mmmmmmm 😳 4mo
Cinfhen It looked so delicious before I blended it @AmyG but the consistency and flavors didn‘t work for me. I think it was the parsley or maybe the cilantro that made it kind of gross 🥴 4mo

AmyG Ha....I was being sarcastic when I said mmmm. 🤣 4mo
Cinfhen This was 2 kale leaves, 2 romaine lettuce leaves, cup spinach leaves, 2 green apples, 1 small cucumber, 1 lime and 1/4 cup fresh parsley & 1/4 cup of fresh cilantro @AJBowers I think it was the parsley & cilantro that killed the smoothie for me @erzascarletbookgasm 4mo
saresmoore Could you not just toss it all together as a salad? Maybe sans parsley? It sounds like it‘d be a tasty salad! 4mo
Melissa_J I started reading this book last night! Won‘t likely get through it quickly because of all the other books I have on the go at the moment, but I liked what I‘ve read so far. PS - that smoothie does not look appetizing. 4mo
LibrarianJen I agree with @saresmoore it would be a delicious salad! I‘m not a fan of smoothies though. 4mo
Cortg Maybe through some homemade dressing on it and go salad style instead 😉 4mo
Cinfhen I‘m using a book not in the Litsy database @saresmoore @LibrarianJen @Cortg It‘s titled Your Personal 7 Day Raw Food & Drink Detox Guide by Tyler Buckhouse. So I‘m trying to stick to his plan. It‘s 70% liquid 30% food approach, but I agree chewing the fruits & veggies is much more satisfying and tastier than drinking them 😝 4mo
Cinfhen Book is soooo good @melissa_j I thought it would take me awhile to read through it but it‘s easy reading and so captivating. I‘m just pissed I‘m not an archeologist or anthropologist, so cool to be a modern day IndianaJones. 4mo
julesG Smoothies, my least favourite food group. I prefer to chew my veggies and fruit. Burns more calories. 😜 4mo
julesG Also, you said modern day Indiana Jones, so I'm stacking this. 4mo
Megabooks I finished another book last night rather than reading this. #moodreader I think the cilantro in the smoothie sounds like a bit much, but I don‘t really like cucumbers either 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds That sounds VILE (I thought from the photo, and because I‘ve been in India too long ???‍♀️?, that it had jalapeño in it. Almost think it may have been better WITH the heat!). 4mo
Cinfhen Today‘s smoothie was delicious @GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks 1 celery stick, 1 kiwi, 1 green apple & 2 mint leaves 😋😋😋and I added 1/2 cup crushed ice 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen that sounds suspiciously like a green juice I also drank today!!! It was the sizeable amount of parsley and cilantro that would do me in! Was there an actual reason for them? 4mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen Nom nom nom! 😋😋 That sounds fantastic! I love celery in juice! 4mo
Cinfhen It probably had to do with some sort of food breakdown or vitamin source @GlassAsDiamonds IDK but I‘m no longer adding cilantro or parsley to my smoothies!!! It was really nasty 😝 4mo

Huh? The author was discussing Honduras being called the “Banana Republic” and the relationship between United Fruit and the government. I‘m kind of surprised that banana is that big a seller at Walmart. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cinfhen I loved all of the banana background- so fascinating, it‘s literally 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌 and the fact that Honduras is laden with banana groves makes sense that a Monkey God would dwell in the region 🙈🙊right?!?!?!?!!? 4mo

GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen I‘m finding it a really fast read too and wouldn‘t be opposed (although I‘ve got toddler amusement in my near future - apparently kids in a near empty apartment need stuff to do? Who knew 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂). @Megabooks - funnily I wondered about the monkeys and bananas thing!! Mumbai in some suburbs has wild monkeys but I suspect they don‘t eat bananas as a staple (brats do know how to steal and open water bottles though!). 4mo
Cinfhen Oh God, a toddler and an empty apartment might spell TROUBLE ~ good luck 🍀 @GlassAsDiamonds 4mo
Megabooks I‘m not opposed to us each reading at a rate we‘re comfortable with @Cinfhen @GlassAsDiamonds I‘m reading three books at once since I‘m such a mood reader. Plus my dad‘s 70th bday is Sunday, so there are festivities. It sounds like we‘ll all be reading in fits and starts this weekend!! Good luck with the toddler time! That‘s actually my favorite age, but they are super demanding at times!! 👍🏻 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen I will take it!! (I raise cats!!! I‘m a novice at this whole toddler thing!!) Also, they alternate “toddler”, Hindi, Marathi, Polish and English, with the Hindi and Marathi being odd words picked up from daycare, so actual understanding ... not so much! 😭😭😭😭 @Megabooks : these are high octane toddlers ... 4mo
Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds Sounds like it!! I worked as a nanny to two toddlers then preschoolers after I graduated college before I went to vet school. I wonder @Cinfhen & @Megabooks , if we should have a drinking game: a shot every time someone does exactly one of these things Woody‘s warning them not to do? We‘d probably better use chocolate though, I suspect we‘d be drunk too quickly!

Megabooks I‘ll do a bite of ice cream!! From what I‘ve read about creatures lurking in the Australian bush, I wouldn‘t screw around there! 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks 😊😊😊 Or ah... the yard. A learning from living in the outer reaches of Sydney: don‘t bring loosely rolled newspapers inside on a cold rainy evening. Leads to funnel webs under the sink... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ These guys are screwed! Love the ice cream 😂 Something tells me it won‘t have a chance to melt! 😂😂😂 I might do popcorn. Suspect I‘d run out of chocolate too fast! 4mo
Cinfhen Ha!! See my previous post!! I highlighted the same line 😂😂😂 4mo

CarolynM @Megabooks Just to reinforce GAD's point - our cat has been bitten by a tiger snake in our back yard -TWICE! We live approximately 6km from the centre of Melbourne! 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM omg - do you live near the golf course? Mr GaD‘s Melbourne based aunt golfs *around* the tiger snakes. I am personally not so enamoured of golf that I‘d bother...! 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM also - how‘s the kitty??? 😱😱😱 I hope okay. 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen great minds!!!!! 😂😂😂😂 4mo
Megabooks @CarolynM Wow! I couldn‘t imagine having snakes that venomous so close by! A vet I was working with ran into a copperhead basking in the town-circling greenway when she was out biking. As a vet, I‘ve never treated a venomous snake bite, but that would probably be different if I were an Aussie vet. 4mo
CarolynM The cat is fine, but owes us thousands😂😂😂. We live about 500m from Merri Creek 4mo
CarolynM @Megabooks They kill dogs very quickly, but cats can process the venom. The vets support their systems while they're doing it and dose them on pain killers. It took about a week the first time and nearly three the second time. I felt terrible about putting him through it the second time, but he returned to full quality of life and it's been a few years now. I wouldn't do it again. 4mo
Megabooks @CarolynM Oh wow! That‘s a long time to be in ICU! Cats sure are tough. 😻 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM you know, I think I‘d probably prefer the funnel webs!!! It dawns on me that a sensible country wouldn‘t build around deadly snake habitat ... we worry me some times!! (The idiocy of saying this while also living somewhere where they fish cobras out from office stairs while in the process of moving somewhere else with cobras is not lost on me!! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂). Does it change your mind the longer 🐈 lives or just too traumatic all around? 4mo
CarolynM We all need the water so we have to find a way to live together. Cats are just too conceited to acknowledge that anything that looks like prey can hurt them.😂 Apparently it gets harder for the cat to do the processing the more times it happens, also it's less likely to be successful and takes longer. So it could cost a fortune, make the cat suffer for weeks and he doesn't survive it. 4mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM water 🤦🏻‍♀️ One of the next books on my TBR is about India‘s struggles with it. Suspect it does not, however, include tiger snakes!! Interesting that the bite affects them like that (Puff learns but Dini would totally be a multiple bite contender, mainly because he thinks everything wants to play with him ♥️😊♥️). Hopefully yours will avoid the slithering things 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 4mo

Only on page 7 and I‘m freaking out!!!! Journalist Douglas Preston has just been briefed on all the deadly insects and snakes that live in the Honduran Rainforest, where he will be covering an expedition. After listening to the horrors that await him, his reply “We would be fine.” Ummm, something tells me that‘s not how it‘s gonna go. #FamousLastWords #LostTogether @Megabooks

Cinfhen I‘m already hooked @Megabooks but I have so much to do today 🙈I‘m not going to have much reading time 😩😫 4mo
Hooked_on_books I really enjoyed this one! I felt like Preston did a great job of being a regular person, revealing what this would be like, creepy-crawly horrors and all. 4mo

I enjoyed this book! I was saddened by the controversy in the archaeological community over the site at the end, and I hope that the team was as ethical about the excavation as Preston presented it here. LIDAR is an astonishing tool, if you‘re interested in learning about it check out some of the work that has been done on WWI battlefields. Photo is from an excavation I participated in, in Mexico, not nearly as dangerous as the one described here!

#NoFemmeber Sorry I‘ve been knocked out all day by a killer migraine. Since the days of explorer Hernan Cortes, rumors have circulated about an ancient #lost city of immense wealth. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 2009 Doug Preston joined a group of scientist in a quest to uncover The #Lost City of the Monkey God.

Redwritinghood Hope you feel better soon! 8mo
Cinfhen Thanks @Redwritinghood I think it finally subsided 🤞🏼How‘s your daughter?? 8mo

I‘m a sucker for adventure stories, this one being no exception. I was hooked from beginning to end. I loved all of the drama, science, and personalities. Large amounts of history are provided, from Honduran history and culture to Old World diseases to archaeology. I enjoyed it all. Any recommendations for similar reads?

What a fun book! Preston tells the story of exploration into the Honduran jungle, first by lidar, then on foot, and it‘s aftermath in a NF book that reads like an adventure novel. He includes pre-Columbian Central American history and the disease which befalls many expedition members afterward. It‘s a fascinating book.

Not my normal genre of book, but it turned out to be an absolute page turner. The combination of new age technology and old school archeology practices made for not only an interesting read, but added to the adventure and truly made the book unique.

#13 of #13Books13Weeks!!! I may have inadvertently saved one of the best for last! This ARC has been on my TBR pile for almost 2 years. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this true story about the exploration of this ancient city & the quest to learn more about the civilization that populated it! Absolutely fascinating, reminiscent of the lost city of Z which I also loved. From informational to fascinating to gripping, this book will not disappoint!

First half was quick moving and exciting, giving historical background and first hand accounts of finding and working a major archeology site. Second half mainly concentrated on leish and other diseases, and their effects on people and culture. A lot of info on how diseases decimated indigenous peoples. Not as exciting and much more sobering than the first half. Overall I'm glad I read it and would recommend it.

This book was absolutely fascinating! Like some readers on here, I thought the focus in the latter half on infectious diseases was a bit strange, but once you get to the end of the book, you understand why he spent so much time on those topics. Definitely worth the read!

The first half or so was awesome- I loved hearing about the expedition and myths about the city. I also liked learning about the area in the rainforest. The second half was eh. It went way too into the diseases the people on the expedition got. While interesting, it took away from the main topic of the city quite a bit. #audiobook #nonfiction
