The Paperboy | Dav Pilkey, Pilkey

Pickpick

The Paperboy written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey is a fiction picture book that won the silver Caldecott Honor. This book talks about a paper boy and his dogs morning routine from not wanting to wake up, to delivering the papers before the sun comes up, to coming home and going back to bed. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP After reading the book I would have the students get into small groups and have them write about a scene in the book and question what the paper boy might be doing, thinking, and feeling. After they finish writing I would have them as a group write and act out the scene. An E.D strategy to go with this lesson would be to “offer ways of customizing the display of information” for example while acting out I may suggest one student being a narrator. 1mo
DeannaP An ESOL strategy to go with this would be to “use student pairs for team learning”. Lesson: http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/face/pdf/literacy-events/LiteracyEvent_Sa... 1mo
Macker11 I love the activity that you have the students doing after they read this book! They get to be creative and write about the scene in the book, then act it out! Acting it out, is definitely a good strategy for the ESOL learners! 1mo
Dylanburgett I‘ve never heard of this book before but since it‘s a Caldecott award winner I‘ll definitely have to check it out! 1mo
DrSpalding Quality resource however you are not being explicit about how you would use it in the classroom… RA for read aloud for example. 2w

Undoubtedly my favourite Jane Yolen read so far! I loved the “roll of your tongue” wording, and the colorful illustrations were to die for. This would make a perfect “Please just one more” book to read since it‘s so quick and enjoyable. I‘d love a copy for my personal #picturebook shelf. #BBRC #A2Z

LibrarianRyan It‘s books like these that I love Jane Yolen. I know her dinosaurs are more popular but no where near my favorite. 1mo

This book is an exciting and sweet read about a paperboy and his dog. I found it very touching and it would be an amazing read for any animal lover. It had a dream like feel to it and I could imagine it to be a great bedtime story.

I love how the author tells the readers that the little boy and his dog knows their route by heart, even in the pitch black dark.

Genre: Caldecott
A short and sweet read. Before anyone else around is awake, the paperboy has already gotten up, delivered all of the neighborhood‘s papers, and gone back to sleep. I love the “starry night” illustrations in this book.
